I was wondering if there was a way i can stop every folder that contains pictures or videos from showing up in my gallery. For example, if i wanted a folder of porn videos i wouldn't want this showing up in my gallery for anyone using the phone to have easy access to. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Ive tried putting the folders on both phone and sd card but nothing seems to keep it out of the gallery. Please help.

LOL @ porn folder !
#1. Make a folder with all content you wish to hide (pics, vids, etc.)
#2. Place all items into folder
#3. make a new file and name it .nomedia, that will stop them from showing up in the gallery and other programs.
#4. Hit thanks !
How did I know this was going to be about porn? LOL

I figured it out. Change name of folder by adding a period b4 and it doesnt show up.

Just download "hide it pro" free app, it will hide videos, pix, files, folders, apps and more, saves you from having to edit every single file. Straight forward and easy EASY to use.... whats even better, it is a disguised app too, for your spefic needs.
Hit the thanks button,..... lol

Props for honesty!
Usually, this question gets asked more like, "Uh, I have this friend... he has some... media on his phone he doesn't want people to see... so what do I... I mean, what does he do?"

I'm using the default music app. I just want to stop it from scanning and
adding directories from the microSD card that contain audio files that are
not music. (the system noises, content of phone calls, other data
that isn't intended for it to read). These are all in their own directories,
so filtering based on source of content should be fine.
If that's not possibly could someone suggest a music app that does support
where to read from?

you can make a new text file with nothing in it, but without the .txt (or watever) tag, rename it to .nomedia (AND NOTHING ELSE), and place it in the directories you do not want found. i am pretty sure this is the method as i dont have my phone with me
EDIT: confirmed this also works with images that you do not want to show up in your gallery... comes in handy ;D
ahh -- the .filename (so its invisable) and its a flag to the app to ignore that directory.
I follow.
Thanks

I always get folders of images that show up in the gallery app, full of cached map tiles. This should be helpful. Do you know if this works recursively? That is, if I put it in /system, would the app search deeper into /system/app or skip all directories below?
Either way, I really appreciate you mentioning this, I was curious about how the scanning was controlled.

sorry about the late post. i wouldve replied sooner, but my laptop broke down.
(using my schools internet xD)
but yes, the .nomedia file hides the main and sub directories
maybe clearing the gallary's cache from settings>applications>manage applications>gallery
Amazing, thank you!

All,
How to tell the ICS gallery app to look at just the Camera folder? I just installed GReader and everytime it downloads offline articles w/pics, the gallery adds it to the albums, so now I got a crap load of crap albums with article pics.
Thanks for any info.

Thanks for this. I thought about how to get rid of all those pics and stuff the other day
I was wondering if anyone could give any insight into a problem I'm having. I've asked around and nobody can give me an answer. But no matter what version of a jelly bean rom I flash, my gallery will not show my camera folder from my previous cm9 rom, or any pictures in my external sd.
Nobody else is having this problem so I'm thinking it has to be me. I always fully wipe everything before flashing. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.
So gallery is working but pictures aren't showing up? If that's the case sdrescan

I've downloaded a few apps that rescan the SD card. No dice.
Hi, i had the same problem in the past.
Connect your phone to the computer.
Look in the folder from your picture. Is there a file that calls "nomedia" or similar. Sometimes it is in the root of the SD.
Maybe you must change some settings in the Windows folder option to see the "hidden" file.
Is the file only in the camera or DCIM folder you cant see only the pictures and videos.
If the file is in the root of the SD, you cant see any pictures, videos and music.
Solution: delete the file "nomedia"
Really?i had the Anne problem before and "sdrescan" worked. I just ran the app and left it there for a good 15mins

Hi all, How are you?
I have a Galaxy Nexus with Android 4..2.2(JDQ39) unrooted.
I delete a picasa web album by mistake, but It was downloaded on the stock Gallery app (version 1.1.40001).
So I am trying to figure out where the stock Gallery app restore photos checked to be offline in order to restore my photos.
Please, Does someone know where stock Gallery app store the off line albums?
(I have already checked sdcard/Android/data/com.android.gallery3d/cache and /sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.plus/cache folders and both are empty)
Thanks in advance,
Roger
How did you delete the web album? I just tried and it didnt give me the option to delete. And I havent seen an option for offline viewing.
By the way, there is no need to post the same question in two different forums.

I have deleted the album using Picasa Web interface ( I am using the old interface as I deleted my google plus profile to prevent integration with google plus).
And I havent seen an option for offline viewing

On the stock gallery app, there is an option on the top right menu(three dots on top right) to "make available offline".
So the deleted album is stored somewhere in my phone because I made it available offline (I can still the the photos on my phone, although It was deleted from Picasa Web), but I don`t know where it is stored...

Thanks a lot,

That must be a stock thing. I'm using a custom ROM, which the stock gallery app is integrated with Picasa, and I dont have that option. Google is making it almost necessary to have a Google+ account. Even when you create a YouTube account, it automatically creates a Google+ account. I'm not a big fan of HAVING to have one, but its there and I dont use it other than to sync my photos between devices. To answer your question though, I have no idea where the offline folder is. Sorry.
And yes, the Q&A section is the right place for Questions and Answers.

No problem, I have searched about this issue on google, and I read somewhere that offline picasa photos should be stored on one of the following folders: sdcard/Android/data/com.android.gallery3d/cache or /sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.plus/cache
However, both folders are empty on my device =/
Please, Does someone know where stock gallery app store its offline photos?
Thanks
any clue?
nobody?any idea?

Your definitely not the first one to ask that question. The short answer is unfortunately, no. I don't know why, and can't give a good reason, it's just the way the P2XL is. Not that it bothers me, but I know what you mean. I use an app called QuickPic. I can make my own folders to manually separate, move, and organize my pics. Wish I had a better answer, but I don't.

After you save them you can select them in the folder that they got saved to and move them to a different folder. I havent figured out how to get them all saved to just 1 folder yet though.

Yep, that's exactly what I do. You just have to manually move them is all.
I use Tasker to move all my media into the folders I want, but if you don't use it, you will have to spend a couple bucks and be willing to go through a bit of a learning curve
