[Q] SIM contacts...on a Sprint phone???? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I just had something weird happen today...all my google contacts on my phone were now "SIM" contacts (Sprint phones don't have a SIM card). No matter what I did, what contacts I chose to view, only these would show, and I couldn't edit or delete them. I couldn't sync any new ones on Google either. Luckily a 2 week old Nandroid backup (10 May) saved my bacon. Anyone else experience anything like this? I still don't know what caused it. MD4 Stock Rooted.

I have never experienced that before.. but I will say sprint does use sim cards, they just aren't accessible. But that is indeed weird. Good thing you had a backup. Root for the win!

Look it up.

Sprint does offer contact backup through their system, but as Whiplashh said, its weird that its acting like a GSM phone. I've never encountered that issue before.

Did you ever flash a GSM ported ROM?

Export your contacts as a CSV (Menu > export) then go to Settings > Applications > Swipe over to all > Contacts storage > clear data
Then import the CSV that you exported

No, I only flashed the stock prerooted MD4 update. Maybe it just corrupted. I'm still watching to see if it happens again.

[Q] Help?! 50 contacts limit cant save more then that.

I just noticed that people/contacts can only export 50 contacts from my phone. I noticed this because i saved the same number many times an upon exporting it gives me the 1/50 until it reaches 50/50 contacts exported to sd card, i also created dummy contacts to see if they get saved but they didn't, they showed on phone but trying to export they never show up. Ive lost several numbers that way thinking i was saving them then resetting my phone then importing them back in only to find out never got saved besides the original 50.
I have no clue right now where to start to fix this any one had similar problem that can help?
It may not be the answer or resolution you are looking for but I would highly recommend just syncing your contacts with google. Then you don't even have to worry about it because once you sync them, google will save and restore them with no need for interaction. Automagically if you will

Thats what the sprint rep told me. Rather save personal things offline to do myself. Really thats just a cop out with the price of the phone and its stature of a super phone.
Imagine the 1st landline phone people used and it gives you problems, you write to the company and they write back saying hey at lest you can scream out your window and they will be able to hear you.
he also told me to take it into a sprint store for them to trouble shoot. Now i have to root the phone back and put stock. major hassle. Unless there is a solution i can take to avoid all that. After that most likely i'll get new phone with stock 2.2 that cant be rooted as of yet.
I can tell you that i have never seen your problem before. I'm a tech at Sprint and i have done many contact export and imports, sometimes several hundred contacts and never had a problem unless it was the sd card.
You said that you might take to a Sprint store but will have to unroot and flash to stock first. Before taking it into Sprint, try going back to stock and see if that fixes the issue. Could be a rom issue that no one else is noticing or not reporting with whatever rom you might be running.
Also, thats not really a cop out when people suggest using google to backup your contacts. Thats how the phone was designed to work. If you must have that physical backup, then just backup your contacts to google, then import to outlook. Not the solution you wanted to hear I'm sure, but it's another alternative.

Also, if you just sync with Google, you can export straight from Google into a couple different formats.
thx

Yeah. Google recently changed their whole contacts page, but just go to contacts > More actions > Export... and then just choose all contacts, and the format:
Code:
Google CSV format (for importing into a Google account)
Outlook CSV format (for importing into Outlook or another application)
vCard format (for importing into Apple Address Book or another application)

Galaxy S3 Contacts DISAPPEARED...

So basically my SIM contacts which I manually entered one by one disappeared once again today... (The reason I manually entered my contacts is because I changed my SIM to a microSIM and my carrier ROGERs refuses to transfer it for me...)
Running all stock Rogers ICS, no root no nothing..
This disappearing issue was present on all my other Galaxy S3s from Rogers which I exchanged due to flimsy battery cover (hairline cracks) and WiFi random disconnecting issues...
(**Note: ticking display only SIM contacts do not work, ticking another display option and switching it back to only display SIM do not work, rebooting the phone do not work, removing the battery do not work, and syncing option turn on and syncing do not work..)
The issue will be solved if I remove the SIM card and reinsert it, or factory reset the phone. By doing this, it is a temporary fix, I realized that all my SIM contacts will disappear again after a few days.
The only way I can prevent this is to save all my contacts in my Phone Memory or in the cloud Google Sync (I don't trust my privacy with Google though)...
What is happening.... Is this a known ICS bug?? (I used Froyo and Gingerbread on my Galaxy S Captivate and Galaxy S2 Skyrocket LTE....
I have used android since the first Galaxy S (captivate) and I never had this issue before..
Check if it helps
Try and see if you can make a backup of you contact with a google account. Therefore all your contact will be backup there instead of your sim. That way you will never lose them.
Also you can check, while in contact hit menu and see if there is a option: Contact to Display". click it & see if it give you an option to select sim or phone. if it does. select either of them to see if your numbers are there.
Maybe this might solve your problem.
Hope this helps.
Don't trust your privacy with Google?
May I ask why? You're using a Google phone. Syncing a phone to Google servers so you can use your branded Google os phone.
And in terms of someone using mischevious ways to illegally access your contacts. Id be more concerned with your internet provider than Google.
But anyway. Hope you get it fixed mate. May I offer a solution? Have you asked your provider for maybe just a brand new sim? And why have they said no to transferring your contacts? To my knowledge they can't really refuse you, or the store you went to is just a bunch of dicks.
Also. If you have best buy near you. Ask them for some help. Mobile guy here. At my store we would do it no questions asked no charge just to help a fellow out.

As I mentioned in the OP, I ticked the contacts display to SIM only...
@ThatJawn
I know I am using a Google Phone, but the only thing I would ever sync with them is my GMail account and my Google Play Apps...
I do not sync any personal contacts/appointments and of course contact numbers and addresses with them ever since I started using my Galaxy S1 Captivate...
Yes, the store I went to was a bunch of dicks... I don't know if you know the Canadian carrier Rogers Wireless, they are shady people and some of them are just straight up dumb....
Basically my microSIM is a new card.. But for some reason Rogers' new LTE microSIMs do not have the normal SIM cutout adapter... So it makes it difficult to transfer my old contacts from my GS2 Skyrocket LTE to my GS3. The store has a freakin' multiSIM reader, but the teenage chick at that Rogers store in Downtown Toronto did not know how to operate.
Hmm try to catch a different person?
Or go to best buy? Or say like a Walmart or anywhere else they sell mobile phones. I'm sure they wouldn't have any issues doing it for you.

I too don't trust Google with contacts n such. So here is what I do:
Installed "Go Contacts" app.
Always keep it frozen and use only when I need to backup.
This app has option to export contacts. In case of any issue, you could import from the exported file.
You could create as many backups as you want since the exported file gets created with the timestamp as name.

Switched to CM10, can't restore contacts

Ok so I've made the jump to CM10 after running Calk's ROMs since GB 1.1, then ICS since 1.0..
For some reason, every time I wipe, I have issues with my contacts. The numbers disappear from Google, and all that syncs is about 500 useless email addresses of everyone I've ever sent an email to. I have always been able to get the numbers back by restoring the "Contact Storage" data on TiBu. But for some reason it isn't working now.
I have tried three different backups, from three different versions with no luck. The very first time I tried it (with Contacts 4.0.3), the numbers showed up, I immediately tried to sync it, and the phone crashed and rebooted. When it restarted it did the "Android is upgrading" routine, and when I looked again the list is back empty. Nothing actually synced back to Google either. The phone list shows zero. I have tried all combinations of restoring the backups, Data only, App+Data, App only then data only, I even tried restoring the other Contacts app+data/etc.
I did at one point (during a prior wipe) export a vcf, but it turns out that only contained the same list of email addresses and no numbers. I never checked it because I didn't need it - I was always able to restore from TiBu.
Anyone have any ideas?
Yes, start storing ur numbers in Google instead of your phone. No matter what is flashed ur contacts will go with you when you enter your Google account info during setup.

While Titanium backup has recently introduced a feature to backup to xml. I have been using Super Backup to backup and restore my contacts, messages and call logs since I clean wipe and flash roms up to twice a day testing things.
Backing up the data for a system application and restoring it to another version is a nono. If I understand it correctly that seems to be what your doing? You mentioned trying VCF i think that is the format that Super Backup uses for one of the three things.

Assuming you have a nandroid backup, have you tried pulling them out of it using something like appextractor? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300311
I cna vouch for storing the contacts on the google account.

It does work if you do it correctly....otherwise it wouldn't have been suggested. Anytime you store a number ur phone always asks if it should be stored in Google or you r phone....just pick Google and make sure your sync settings are correct. I have never lost a contact since my old HTC Hero days, thanks to that feature.

Well it was a good thought, but it did not work. Always made the backups, but never knew what you could do with them.. It still exhibits the same behavior - once it reboots it says 'contacts are updating', then all I get are the email addresses. I tried with several backups (BTW, any clue why two of the Nandroid folders are tagged Dec 31, 1999?) but it seems that it's a lost cause. Jellybean must have something different in the database than GB/ICS. I'm gonna have to hand key them all.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

I don't recall ever being prompted with that choice at any time during a ROM setup, or even when I first got the phone. It might've had to do with the fact that all my contacts were originally sent by bluetooth from my old phone. But I do have it set to sync with my Google account, and I made sure it sync'd before any wipe, so why are the numbers not in Google?

Hand key them all as in you have lost the ability to restore these on the android rom you backed them up on? Go back export them and then flash CM10 again. Its a lot quicker than typing even a small contact list. Unless Super Backup doesn't work on this CM10 rom.

Haha with all the time I've spent effing with it already I could've hand keyed the whole thing several times over.
In order to go to CM10 from Calk's ICS, I had to ODIN back to EL26 and flash CM from there.. So basically in order to go back to Calk's ICS I have to ODIN back and then flash to ICS, right? And then after I do the restore (assuming it works) and sync, back to EL26 again then flash to CM? (If I do that, I'll probably go with CM9 for now because 10 is a bit too buggy to be my daily driver, plus it's missing bluetooth music/AVRCP which is a must for me)
And do you have any idea why I can't get the damn numbers to sync with Google? Like I said before, I have sync turned on and have manually done it countless times, but it wont keep the numbers.

are these duplicate contacts that you're trying to erase? you can try to use contact remover from Play store.
Are Y0u Running A Custom Rom? Is S0 Go Back T0 Stock And See If's Still Happening..

All contacts disappear; reboot, and come back

My wife and I both are occasionally having all contacts disappear. Wife's phone is a stock Note II. My SGS III is stock/rooted ROM, with custom kernel.
Quite frustrating; contacts all gone and need to reboot, and all reappear.
Anyone else seeing this? Any solutions that you know of?

how do you have your contacts setup? by vcard, sim, gmail, etc?
do you 2 share similar apps on your devices? it could be an app causing this error that you both use. how long ago did this start?

Our contacts are via Gmail Synchronization. We do not create contacts on the SIM card.
It started for me a month or two ago. It is infrequent. In fact, I had decided it was something going screwy wiht Gmail due to some update or something, as it had not happend to me for a few weeks. But it happened again to me today.
In my wife's case, what she has been noticeing, more than me actually, is the contacts disappearing from her widget, not from contacts. But yesterday, all the contacts disappeared for here, but remained on her widget
Regarding programs, I have a lot installed; she has a few things installed. I am rooted and using Go LAuncher and associated widgets, etc. She is standard JB, no root, and using default Touchwiz stuff.

when you go into contacts, are all of them gone or just most? to see if they're all their and your phone is simply not displaying them all, try this:
go into contacts > settings and chose Import/Export. export the list to the SD card. go back to the contacts list > settings > import, all from SD card. if they're in there, go ahead and make sure your contacts are set to display just the gmail ones (in contact settings) and then sync your contacts with gmail (in settings > accounts). maybe even turn contact sync off at that point
