Hello,
I attempted to download a file last night and was told I has insufficient space. As I checked settings and storage it did show I had used all my internal space but none of the numbers added up. About 8gb was missing. I have 16 gb internal and all of my apps media photos and such only took up about 8. Also it said my total space was only 12 gb.
I did a factory reset flushed cache and dalvik cache even wiped my entire internal SD and did a fresh install of Rom gapps and kernel. Now after all that I still have 12gb total, I know have 7 gb available. But what I have on the phone does not add up to 5 gb of data. I have attached a screenshot of what it currently says and it is still not adding up to me.
Any help would be appreciated.

remember, your OS and all it's necessary files will take up a portion, typically leaving you with this 12gb amount.
also, if you transitioned from 4.1. to 4.2 (or one 4.2 rom to another 4.2 rom) then you need to perform the below wipe functions in order to eliminate the storage issue:
-wipe data
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik
-format /system
-format /data
-flash rom/gapps
i keep my rom/gapps, backups, etc on a micro sd card so that i can perform the necessary wipes while still retaining everything i need to flash on the micro sd.
Thanks I'll add the storage wipes as well and give it a try.

Okay, I'm not quite fully understanding the internal memory on the S3. I used to own the OGEvo (as I've stated several times) and it didn't have 'usable' internal memory like the S3 does. For instance if I were to flash a new ROM (wiping data, cache, dalvik) then everything internally would be wiped. For the S3 I think it's a little different right? http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/confused.gif As we all know it's 12GB of free usable internal memory where I can put vids, pics, and music (and other crap) there for immediate access w/o having to use my SD card. My question is that when you flash a new ROM (wiping data, cache, dalvik) is the 4GB that's (apparently off limits) the only thing that gets touched? the reason why I ask is because I decided to move a large chunk of files from my SD card to my internal memory so I could use the SD card for something else. I just want to know that all my stuff internally won't be erased (even though I have back ups of most of it anyway, it's just bothersome if I would have to re-sync everything again)
When u wipe data in cwm it doesn't touch your files on your internal memory (SD card). It only wipes your ROMs data. Its like a factory reset. So all your files are safe.

So you're saying it would erase my music, videos, and pictures if stored on internal memory and I did a factory reset to flash a new rom??

No. Flashing a new rom deletes files in /system. Wiping data deletes files in /data. Files in your "internal memory card" are in /sdcard so its fine. You can flash all you want.

I just flashed LiquidSmooth v2.5 with the following steps:
CWM backup onto internal sd card
Move Rom and Google apps to internal sd card
Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache
Format /system, Format /data
Install Rom, Google apps
Boot
However, now when I look at the internal storage of my phone through settings, there is 12.05GB available, but only 1.68GB free space. I have not downloaded any apps, and I have no media on the device (pictures, music, videos, etc). When I connect the phone to my computer and explore the internal storage, there is nothing there as well. I think there is a lot of stuff taking up room that I can't see. How do I get to those files to delete them and make more room? Is the problem that I am not using an external sd card?
Thanks in advance.
Get disk usage from the market. It will show you what's using your space.

I just downloaded and used it. It says that 9.3GB is system data? Is that possible? How can I get rid of that?
Go to the root required section and choose /data. That should give you better results.

I am starting to get insufficient storage alerts on my M919 GS4. I have more than 4GB free on the main, and 50+GB free on the SD.
Is there a hidden partition that isn't listed that is getting filled up? Could Cache be filled, and preventing new apps from being downloaded, or some such nonsense?
Should I just do a dalvik wipe, or clear the play store?

What app are you trying to download?
I have noticed this behavior as well. Help?

Hmmm... You have 4GB remaining on Internal. I'm not sure, but below are some possibilities of what may be occurring:
But first wipe cache and dalvik cache as you suggested. If that doesn't resolve your issues:.
Can you post a screenshot shot from Settings:
Device
More
Storage
If the numbers add up, possible files taking up Internal SD/Device storage are:
ROM downloads
Nandroid backups
TiBu backups.
If the gb numbers don't add up in internal SD/Device storage:
Internal storage likely corrupt.
Move files from internal to extSdCard and/or pc
Boot into Recovery -
Data Format internal SD storage, Not extSdCard.
Reboot
Check internal/Device storage to make sure the numbers add up
Move any files back to internal that you moved before doing Data Format
Because you have 4GB internalSSD storage remaining, and even if the above 2 scenariosddon't pertain to you exactly, you may just want to Data Format Internal SD and see if that resolves your issues.
I mentioned a few scenarios in one post because I'll be off line for awhile .

using root explorer or any equivalent file explorer,
look in Data/Media/clockworkmod/backup
If you have used CWM to backup you phone it's probably going in there and when you make another backup, it's included in the next, and so forth compounding the size of each backup and eating all that space. you could move all the backups to the external SD card and have CWM create your backups on the External SD card instead, IF that is the problem.
I had that experience and could not for the life of me find what was EATING my memory space! just the backups and it's compounding took over 3/4 the entire space on the internal memory! Good Luck!
Aloha
Should have replied earlier, and could have sworn that I did.
The problem was that I restored a backup of rom toolbox. That had app2sd turned on. Since the gs4tmo does support app2sd the redirection was seeing zero space on device.
Turning off app2sd in toolbox fixed my problem right up.

I'm going to install a new ROM for the first time, planning to install Wicked.
For installing a ROM, I understand you are free to do it from the internal or external storage - you just need to find the file from the recovery's file manager. No problem.
HOWEVER, instructions for this (and many ROMs I've read about) tell you to do a "full wipe" (data, cache and dalvik).
Does this mean I can't (shouldn't) install from internal storage? Or, what are the consequences of not wiping the data partition? Can it be wiped after somehow loading the ROM file?

A "full" wipe isn't exactly a full wipe. You wipe system, data, and cache. While it's true that your internal SD card is on the /data partition, it is untouched by the wipe data function. As far as consequences to not wiping data... all sorts of problems can crop up if you don't wipe it; especially if you're moving between different ROMs (i.e. going from stock TouchWiz to an AOSP variant) or different versions of Android like 4.2.2 to 4.3, etc. If you're going from, say Wicked V9 to Wicked V10, it shouldn't be a problem to leave data intact because it's still Android 4.3. Wicked V8 to Wicked V9 would likely require a data wipe because it's going from 4.2.2 to 4.3.

Thanks. So the internal sdcard is not wiped by the data wipe? Is it possible to ask for the details of what the data wipe does in exact terms? Sounds like it doesn't do any formatting, so it must do a delete (rm -rf) of certain directories? Any idea which ones and which ones it leaves alone?

It wipes the userdata partition, and others, there's like 30 different partitions. This partition is where your apps and app data is stored. It does not wipe the sdcard partition which is your internal sdcard.

I see. So what data is stored on the internal sdcard partition? Is this the file system that you see by default when you connect to a computer via USB (MTC)? Where pics are stored and whatnot...

Hey everyone I rooted my device last night, was on LP. Went to make a backup of my current setup but noticed my data backup size was gigantic, after some testing I figured out it was adding my whole internal storage as part of the backup.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Using latest twrp for our device
I'm trying to figure it out also 10 gigs for a backup compared to 1.5 or 2 gigs on my g3
Well I don't know if you wanna do this, but I formatted data in recovery (formats all of your/data ext including internal sd). Then used SD Maid Pro to clean up system app cache and user app cache. Then before making my next back up I wiped dalvik and cache. My data partition size dropped from 6.5gb from my 1st backup to 880mb, so I'd assume formatting data worked for me
But I hear you I had a G3 too, backups were never over 2 gbs lol
I don't think twrp backups stuff from your SD card or internal storage. I think it's from the size of the ROM plus apps and app data.
