[Q] Want to root and install R800a, very lost. - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, as the title said, I want to root my new Xperia Play R800a, and I am very lost right now. Ultimately, my goal is to install Xperia NXT 2r1. I think that since I have the r800a version, I am not able unlock the bootloader, so I am ok with not having a custom kernel.
But the problem is, I'm totally lost right now. Could anyone show me a guide or something to what I'm supposed to do to start? That's all I'm asking.
What I HAVE done is downloaded everything they asked for me to download in the post, and have installed flashtools, but whenever I try flashing the firmware 4.0.2 enhanced, I am not able to do so. It is just stuck on a screen where it tells me to go to fastboot mode, but I go to fastboot mode, and for some reason it isn't recognized. (I know it's fastboot because the power button is glowing blue.) I think a driver might be installed incorrectly, but I'm not sure how to install it correctly after.
I'm sorry if my post isn't that helpful, I'll add any more information if you guys want me too.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the late response -
I flashed Firmware 4.0.2.A.0.58 Enhanced, the one that they told me to flash in the guide.
I did notice however, that it said that it was for r800i. I just assumed it was universal. Is there a specific firmware I should be flashing for r800a?

Thanks for the response!
I went to that link and downloaded and flashed R800a_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftfwith vendor partition NEWEST FTF, but the same thing happens when I try to root. It's like the button is unresponsive. Is there a specific ftf I was supposed to flash?

Alright found out the problem. Apparently there are two versions of flashtool. One version doesn't work while the other does. I honestly don't know what the difference is. But for other people who might be facing the same problem, if your flashtool has only three icons, Flash, Root, and check for SU permissions I think (it looks like a key), then you have the wrong version. Your flashtool should have 7 icons.

Doesn't Matter

Oh yes, I found that out a bit later. The problem was lying in the flashtools I was using. Once I got the right flashtools, I reflashed the previous firmware rooted it, installed the rom, and it all worked perfectly.

[Q] How to boot to recovery?

Hey peeps - another annoying n00b question (sorry)
I have the Doom v3 kernel and stock 2.3.3
Just want to know how I can boot into recovery so I can install a ROM zip?
I have tried every combination of buttons on startup including Power then tapping and holding Back and I cant get into recovery mode.
Please help i really want to try the GingerStation rom
Turn device off. When off press the power button once, then start tapping any hardware button untill device boots into recovery. You can also try doomlords xCharge app from the market.
Sorry i havent been very active in the forums recently. I will be updating rom soon with some cool features and a new name

AFAIK you have to boot into recovery the standard way. Like the person above described. Once you do that CWM creates a directory in /cache called "recovery" then xCharge works fine

Are you rooted?
If not, do you know how to do that?
No, it's completely stock, I've read I have to flash a file in recovery, I've got it, but I don't know how to reboot in recovery with button combination.
To get cwm, root using doomlords easy toolkit, search development
Then install this app and click install: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pvy.CWMinstaler
After you have installed that, boot on your phone, and when you see the sony ericsson screen, repeatedly tap volume down until you get into cwm
WOW! It's very easy this way, thanks a lot
Another quick question, now bootloader is unlocked?
Can I flash any custom roms like any other device? (flash in recovery mode)
Thanks again.
That way i showed is to install CWM with a LOCKED bootloader.
This will allow you to flash STOCK based roms, no others
This is not unlocking bootloader, just getting CWM
If you want to unlock your bootloader, you have to go to the sony website or pay to unlock it
Oh, so I can't flash CM roms, but I can with stock based, right?
I knew about Sony website, but I though there was other ways to have the bootloader unlocked.
Well, thank you a lot, now I have to find a good stock based rom.

Wait if you are just rooting you don't need to do that. What model is your phone?
Check if your bootloader isn't locked and you have unlock it first.

What I would do is flash back but at first check if your fastboot is actually not working.
Turn off the device and check it, take out the battery and put it back in then hold search button and plug in usb if you have a blue light then fastboot is ok.
You also need Android ADB drivers which you need to have the Android SDK to get them or if you have flashtool there is a drivers folder which is the simplest method to install ADB bridge.
Then using flashtool (if it worked) flashed the DoomLord Kernel, if it says you have no permission to do so then you need to unlock your bootloader.

I also need the link to the doom kernel which I might have and instructions on how to flash it.

You should first download flashtool. Then use flashtool to flash the verizon firmware. I will provide a link. Then enter flashmode by turning your phone off completely. Hold the back button, and plug the usb in the computer and then into the phone while still holding the back button. A green light should appear on the top. Then flash the firmware and there. Then use superoneclick to root

Luckily you have flashtool so you do not need the Android Sdk. There should be a drivers folder in your flashtool and an executable inside that will install like a normal program. This contains all the drivers you will ever need.
On every time it installs one it will prompt you to install or not install jusf click install and you will be asked this about 20 times for each driver.

If I remember correctly, the xperia play 4g was R800at and not R800x. Well anyway you have to download the firmware for your phone. Then place it in the firmware folder inside the flashtool folder. you cant relock a bootloader with a rom.. you need help fro this thread. download a ftf firmware and flash t using flashtool so that the phone boots p and then check the bootloader status .....later depending on it, flash a custom kernel and rom (optional though recommended)

[Q] Xperia Acro S 6.2.b.1.96 Rooting Issue

Device info:
Acro S running stock 6.2.b.1.96 with locked bootloader
This is what I believe is the process in short:
Flash 6.2.B.0.211 Kernel
Use DoomLord's one click root .bat
Flash 6.2.b.1.96 Kernel
I am getting stuck on the second step. The batch file says "LT26w (6.2.B.1.96) is not supported". My question is, shouldn't flashing a kernel change the build number? Am I goofing up somewhere? Feels stupid when the same thing works for everyone else so there are no similar posts.
Thank you for your time.

I'll be damned. Was using v16 instead of v18 of his easy rooting toolkit. Solved. Thanks man for pointing it out.
Great to hear you're sorted. I'm looking to get my Acro S rooted over the next week or two and I wondered if I could ask you a couple of quick questions please?
Did you back up your apps and data before rooting?
How did you get to flash the earlier FW? Flashtool seems to say disconnect usb, turn off, then press and hold the back button , the reconnect the usb lead and turn back on - I have tried this but nothing seems to happen
I have installed Flashtool and the adb drivers.
Any pointers you can give would be great.
Cheers,
John

Flashing .211 FW issue
Hi guys. I'm encountering an issue with my acro S that has .96 firmware. I've been trying to flash the .211 FW for a couple of times but still stuck with the .96. As per the threads abt flashing, it takes minutes but mine just takes a couple of seconds. As of the moment I deleted the flashtool and currently dloading it again. Just not sure that could be the problem. Any help?
First of all you flash the whole .96 firmware, then .211 kernel and then root (make sure unkown resources and usb debuggin checked) and watch on ur phone and accept superuser permission... then flash back .96 kernel....

Did you back up your apps and data before rooting?

Nope. No need. Since you are just flashing the kernel, you dont lose any data. If you are really new to this, it wouldnt hurt to take a backup, in case things go south.
In any case, the link ronin1728 posted looks great and hassle free.

Even if you flash the .211 kernel (NOT the whole firmware), the build number will still show as .96 but the easy rooting toolkit will read it as .211.
Check out ronin1728's link for an easier alternative.
Belated thanks for the advice folks,
I followed Ronins link to vroot and it worked like a charm
Now to start getting rid of some bloatware......
