I'm trying to root using Motochopper, but it's not working. It'll say the exploit has been completed, but I don't have SU when I use Root checker. I'm guessing this is because I keep connecting as "media device". Is this normal? Also, I have installed the latest drivers and I have enabled USB debugging. Is there a way to root without a computer or a way to fix this? Please help!

I had the same issue. I flashed the recovery below and it gave me root access. Then update SU and you're good to go

I'm trying to do it, but I think it needs to be recognized as USB Debugging mode to use ODIN. Any other ideas guys?
I could not get adb to recognize my rooted S4. I had usb debugging checked. I had set path to what I thought was the latest version of adb. Today I thought, let me check what version of adb I am using. The version I have is 1.2 no wonder adb doesn't see my phone. installed the newest version of adb problem solved.

Hello. I ave ordered a Motorola Defy which should arrive in a couple of days from now. I'm pretty sure that it will be running on Android 2.1. So in all preparedness for the rooting, I have installed the Motorola Drivers and SuperOneClick V1.9.5(with driver pack).
So my question is, is all of this as simple as checking the USB debugging option, unmounting the SD card and clicking the root button. Sorry, I'm new to this stuff. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
-restart your phone while keeping the volume-up button pressed. This will get your phone into bootloader mode.
-Connect your phone to your computer via USB. Its bootloader drivers will get automatically installed.
-Restart the computer again and also restart your phone normally into Android this time.
-Connect your phone to your computer and let its normal drivers get automatically installed.
-Make sure USB debugging is DISABLED on your phone in Settings > Applications > Development.
-Launch SuperOneClick on your computer by right-clicking on it and selecting ‘Run as Administrator’.
-Click ‘Root’. It will say ‘Waiting for device…’
-Now ENABLE USB debugging on your phone in Settings > Applications > Development.
-Wait patiently till you see a prompt on your computer saying ‘Device is rooted’.
-Reboot your phone and you’re done!
All the best
What about the new version of SuperOneClick i.e. 1.9.5
I've read the same instructions on addictive tips. And they suggested an older version of SuperOneClick since it was written sometime ago. I've heard that there is an easier way of doing it with the newer versions of SuperOneClick. That's what I wanted to know.
I could not root my Defy with the newest version of superoneclick I used version SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse the newest could not root my phone. You can try but if it does not work then use an older version.
You have to enable USB debugging and set usb connection to charge only, or else ADB cannot connect to your phone. Then press Root and wait till it says your phone is rooted.
Worked for me on my 2 Motorola android phones.
(owner of Milestone XT720 and Defy)
I use v1.7.0...and it works like a charm
Thanks
Thanks folks. I have a self of calmness in my mind now. I now have both the versions of SuperOneClick (1.7 and 1.9.5). I'll try it with 1.7 first. Can't wait to get my hands on the device tomorrow. Thanks again folks.
I've read that it is a must to unmount sd card. How do i do that?
Edit: Nevermind. Found it under settings>sd card

New rooting guide for for Defy
I can't post links so just go to tech journal com and search for root Motorola.
This just came out today, hope it helps. I'm going to try it and will report back.
Been looking for a while for something like this. It seems like there is nothing to it, at least going by other stuff I've seen.
Comments?

I rooted my device 3 days ago (thats when i recieved my Defy) in all the phones ive rooted and all the rooting i ever did, i never bricked a phone.
No ive used the newest version and i did not work and no brick either.
For Android v2.1 I used 'z4root' without any problems. In v2.2.2 z4root don't work, then I use SOC 1.9.1 (for root) & 1.9.5 (for 'non market apps')
Is there a way to root stock 2.2 that isn't unREVoked or z4root? I can't get unREVoked to work, just tells me to connect phone via usb and enable USB debugging. I have done this. Adb isn't working either, and z4root just sits at the screen for hours saying it's working. I just need a temp root for now, as I am having a usb problem where the phone reboots to 5 vibe whenever unplugged. I obviously want to get back to rooted, but just want to go one step at a time. Phone can read the SD, but my computer cannot recognize USB storage mode.
Is there a way to get this done?
Thanks,

Did you get the drivers for Windows and change USB connect to "charge only?" Not sure about how else to go about rooting to be honest.
Sent from my Droid Incredible running some random CM7 nightly.

This method worked for me but instead of changing to MTP try these:
When it asks to change to MTP: disconnect the USB cable, disable USB Debugging, then plug the phone back in.
OR
When it asks to change to MTP: disconnect the USB cable, disable USB debugging, re-enable it, then plug the phone back in.
ahhhhh worked like a charm thanks
I noticed that the screenshot for recovery mode (accessed by following steps here) has an option to "Update from ADB". I assume this would use ADB sideload. However, since the FTV doesn't have an accessible USB client port, I'm not sure how or if this would work (unless Amazon built network drivers into the recovery partition).
Has anyone tested this out? Basically, just seeing if you can get ADB access while in Recovery mode. If it is possible, this may be a viable route for downgrading from un-rootable firmware releases.

It's part of stock android recovery. No network drivers and no working ADB over USB.

If we theoretically got ADB over USB working, would that stock android recovery prompt install the update.bin files?
Since fastboot over USB works, it may not be too difficult to get ADB over USB to work if the device is already rooted. It wouldn't help anyone with rooting blocked or with a bricked device, but it would be a good downgrade method for anyone who accidentally updates (assuming the modifications made to achieve ADB over USB survive an update).
Thoughts?

Amazon has to have provided a way, if for no one but themselves, to access the device via recovery. And it seems like any solution that involved opening the case to get direct access would require an unnecessary amount of work for them.
Even AppleTV allowed DFU access via USB

Unfortunately with a locked bootloader there is no theoretically. I've spent many days screwing around with the kernel code trying to get it to go into USB client mode without much success. So if I can't do while updating the kernel, it's definitely not possible without changing code. I have no clue what's causing it to not work. It's just the stock CAF msm otg driver. I've tried forcing it into client mode and it just gets hung in the USB statemachine.

I would guess that they work with unlocked bootloaders, so they can use fastboot to flash updates all day long.

So I was finally able to get ADB over USB working. Unfortunately it requires tweaking the kernel, so it doesn't really help anyone right now.

Regardless, that's pretty cool. Any progress, even if not too useful right now, is great.
I am trying to root the LG G# running on 5.0.1. I have tried every [email protected]#$%^ way and I am pissed. I tried it this way ..... http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-method-lg-devices-t3129197 , one way script way.with the LGoneclickroottool or whatever the name is and it gets all the way to 100% but the Root checker app says its not rooted. I encountered a few errors first it was the PTP ,it would get stuck at 90% then I switched to MTP and it reached 100%.
I noticed that everytime I unplug the phone or switch between MTP or PTP the phone makes a sound and it says its installing drivers again. Could that be the problem?
I need some help with this , I have been trying for 3 fu$#@%^ hours and I cant get it to work.

Seems your in a pickle.. I used this site and it worked http://lgg3root.com/
Also plug it in and if you are PC savvy look in the device manager and see if its listed. If it is remove it (it may be listed as unknown device). then unplug the phone reinstall the driver then plug it back in and try the root method again. Hope this helps! sorry no one else is bothering to even give a helping hand.

I didnt run into an error or anything. i was able to follow step by step the lgg3root website with no problem. And when it says done and i take the battery off like the guy says and turn my phone on Supersu does not appear on my apps or root checker say that it has been rooted. Im about to throw this **** against the floor.
And yeah ,nobody else has given me any help either. [email protected]#$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
