[Q] How to root and install custom roms? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Before you ask to search, I have. It's just that I'm a noob and new to Samsung devices as I previously have owned an HTC device. I've searched the thread for many ways to root but I've found around 3-4 different threads and I don't know which one to go by. Also, since I have the Canadian T989D version, does following a T989 root guide and flashing roms that state T989 differ from T989D? Also, how am I able to flash TWRP as the recovery? Thanks and sorry for my noobiness..

This guide is excellent

Will this work for the T989D version? and can I ask what are modems and where can I find them to flash?

Yes, it will work. The main difference to just root your phone from the T989, is the way to put it in recovery mode.

Rooting process the same for the T-Mobile T989 and Koodo T989D?

Hi everybody, I recently got a Koodo Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T9898D and I wanted to know if the rooting process for my device is the same as the rooting process for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989. I realize there is no section for Koodo's (or Telus') version of the phone on the website, so I had to post here.

You betcha! There is a forum here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514434
I used this method and it worked great! Just make sure you use the 3.0.7 efghi signed version of Superuser. I managed to use the other one, but i got the superuser app, but no root access until I used the correct version
Anyway, there you are. Enjoy your SII X!

thanks! I was going to use that guide or the galaxy 2 root "How to Root ICS/GB on T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989!"
but both should work though. The guide you sent me says it's for 4.0.3, will it work for 4.0.4? And you're with Koodo right?

I used the guide on Android forums, only because there were pics, but both work and are the same. And yes, same procees, just use the Superuser 3.0.7 efghi signed version. And yup! No issues with Koodo whatsoever.

Oh okay, so did you use the process from the link you sent? And it seems the main difference between the two guides is that one uses Superuser 3.0.7 efghi signed version and one uses CWM-SuperSU-v0.87.zip. While they both should work, I was wondering what the differences between the Superusers were; I think 0.87 is better because it is compatible with future firmware upgrades

Well, there was a link to this guide on that forum -
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...d-ultimate-root-optimization-guide-steps.html
I used this guide only because it had a few more details than the other, but they are essentially the same steps. Also had some pics.
And about the superusers, i don't know the difference. However I was able to install superSU from the Play Store and also update the superuser version I was using after I obtained root.
So to answer your question, I have no idea haha. Personally I think it would be best to follow the guide, and then try to upgrade after rooting, but it's your choice.
Hopefully this helps, but if not, search is your friend

I sure was. I'm still using it because a few of the ICS roms are a little buggy. I've heard Jedi Mind Trick is pretty good tho. I just wanted something stable and bug free Stock with root woo!
And a little question. I think you are using one too many 8's. Your phone an SGH-T989D correct?

Woop, yeah you're right. But you used the ClockworkMod Recovery in the original post right, Version 5.0.0.0?

Nice! And yeah, the only thing that was different was the superuser. Anyways, congrats, and enjoy your rooted phone!

Telus T989D here and flashed using the method in the 2nd post worked perfectly. Used TWRP instead of CWM, rooted easily, even flashed radios (so I could unlock my SIM) back and forth, and installed AOKP.

Hey. i now you are saying that the rooting proccess is the same but do you know if all of the roms and customizations are the same? i am wanting to put CyanogenMod 10.1 RC3 on my Koodo Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T9898D but everything i am seeing is for T-Mobile.
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version:4.1.2
any other details needed to find out which will work just let me know.
generally everything is mostly the same the only thing you might have issues with is your data you might have to find the APN settings for KODO and make sure to flash the newest radio MC6

stupid question i think, can i flash different modems/radios on stock?

please let me know if i can flash different radios on my rooted/stock rom uvlh2? I want to try and see if i can get better data speeds in my basement. Im using modem flasher 2.0 but dont want to screw up my phone, but i want to flash UVLI2 (the leaked ICS radio). Thanks again, i appreciate it

Umm... how? I don't think it's possible. Apparently you know a way but don't want to share? Also, iv wouldn't count on EVER getting good speeds in your basement. The bands TMo uses aren't meant for it.
I don't think you can
Of course you can flash radios. Why wouldn't you be able to?
Assuming, of course, you know what you're doing..
As long as you have a T999 model, you can flash any of the radios released in the dev section. Any radio on any rom. some work better than others but everyone has a different best one. Its up to you to test them all for yourself.

ddont know if this applies... but i used to flash radios, through my galaxy S (first generation), usually through odin, or a zip file and cwm... not sure how it would work for the gs3, but pretty sure itd still apply, if any method is best, probably through cwm as that shouldn't (in theory) affect your flash counter
Correct, though I personally recommend twrp. Just read the ops for any of the many released modems in dev section for more info.

Look up teshxx rom in development if your after stock rooted rom. This is the base stock rom I have used. I would also recommend wanamlite rom v1.2. Just make sure you know your model number ie GT-7105 LTE.

Q rooting

Hey guys I'm trying to root my friends Verizon galaxy nexus and I'm having some problems finding the right way to do it... He is running the newest version 4.2.2 and it seems all guides are outdated.. Can anyone link me to a forum on how to do so? Thanks in advance.

There is a stickies in this forum that are fine.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529058
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26328017&postcount=123 <-- that is in a different sticky (less in depth instructions). Although with that you probably should download a more up to date recovery, but it would get you root with the old recovery.
That said...I recommend letting your friend do the work. That way he/she can learn, and if there is a problem, he/she can possibly fix it. Rather than being stuck without a device until you can get around to potentially fixing it. Especially if you plan on flashing custom ROMs and kernels.

Questions about miui

Hello im about to flash this rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2331888
I downloaded it and noticed that it says d2att in the title, but the thread says for d2tmo. Is it safe to flash?
I have a t999v d2tmo and the bootloader is T999VVLDLL1. Thanks.

Yes. Just change the build.prop to reflect your device after you flash it. I don't advise doing this with any other ROMs. Only AT&T.

Is there any risk in flashing this rom? Or is it the same as flashing a rom for the d2tmo?
Does anyone know? I want to flash the rom, but i thought that flashing roms for other phones is really risky.
1. Its in the tmobile development forum.
2. Others in that thread have flashed onto their T999's.
3. Isn't that what the last two already answered for you?
4. Yes it is safe to flash on any T999 variant.
