MD5 mismatch on Gingerbread ROMs - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I am not new to flashing ROMs, but everytime I nandroid calks 3.0 or Blazer 4.1 it says everything backed up fine. Then when i'm on an ICS, aosp, or tw jellybean ROM, I will want better battery or smoothness of either two roms so I mobile Odin (pro) back to el29 direct boot then try to restore and I get a MD5 mismatch everytime. This never happened back in the gingerbread days, only when spaces were left during renaming but I don't do the noob mistakes of old. I name the ROM as I do my other nandroids and the gingerbread versions fail for md5 mismatch. I noticed both Calks and blazer 4.1 use the rogue kernel so I even went to that recovery to see if that would work, still no good... Any insight would be appreciated. All the other ics, aosp, and jellybean tw restore fine. Thanks for any assistance

Are you gb backups done with el29 direct boot kernel? Not to insult your intelligence, but I have that issue sometimes when the kernel I try to do recovery with isn't the same one I did backup with. If you haven't, try backup with el29(I'd try el26 too), and then restore using the same one safe kernel. Good luck

I tried restoring with EL29 direct boot, and even flashed the ROM and then went to its recovery (rogue, which was used to make the backup) and still failed. I haven't tried making the backup with EL26/29 though.

Try that. Then restore with el29/26 as well. See how that works

If you've been on jb you'll need to flash a one click of older versions to repartition the device correctly, the backup wont restore it properly to gb or ics. I'm not sure this would cause an md5 mismatch, but I know when I restored back to fi27 from early jb leaks I had to one click before it would boot:beer:

That makes sense that because you have to partition to go from gb/ics to jb you have to partition, you would have to in order to go back. Good point

Yeah, restoring data through an ICS Recovery is highly un-recommended. So Odin back to GB, flash a Custom Recovery then restore.
Can I go from ICS to ICS or do i have to go back to GB before going to another ICS rom?

You'd have to do the same thing. Restore both GB and ICS from GB.
Yeah. If you're on an ICS ROM. I wouldn't recommend flashing anything without Odining back to stock first. I also would never wipe data while on ICS. That is what caused mine to brick was wiping data while on an ICS ROM. I haven't done either since and so far I have had good luck and no problems. Plus, going back to pure stock first ensures you have a good flash and minimal issues.

I don't want to sound like I'm over-riding what these guys are saying, because I'm sure they are correct, but I have been going back and forth between sfhub's one click CL29 and calkulin's ICS FD02 ROM without any problems using my nandroids with CWM. But maybe I've been getting lucky, as I was doing it before reading what they posted above. But I've also not experienced any of the other issues everyone else has been having on the ICS ROM's.

Is it possible?

To do a nandroid advanced restore of data from a gb rom to a ics rom? Currently on calks ics fd24 and i have a nandroid of blazer rom. Would doing an advanced restore of data be ok or do you think it might mess something up?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I'd use sfhubs autoroot EL26+StockCWM. Safest bet for sure.
Im not trying to go back to gb, i want to restore my data from a gb rom to the ics rom im on now.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Oh I wouldn't do that yet. But, you can try it an let us all know. For maximum safety I've just been using Odin to flash then going back to the stock EL26+CWM to then flash to ICS builds. And then I have to reinstall all my apps and do the configuration of everthing again - real pain in the anus. Main reason I haven't been flashing as much. I have kept coming back to my Blazer Rom. After messing with ICS I'll do the above (Oding stock EL26, add stock CWM - both from sfhub) then restore my last nandroid. It gets me back to completely working phone. I'm hoping to get some answers to using the 'preserve data' option to update/upgrade so I can save a crap load of time and effort.
Ill try and see what happens. Also, i thought the ics kernels were only giving problems for flashing roms? Whenever im on a ics rom and i want to go back to blazer, i just wipe and restore, no issues.

Going from Blazer ICS Rom to AOKP ICS Rom

I have my rooted E4GT and the Blazer ICS Rom is installed on it at the moment. I kinda want to try and switch to AOKP's latest build and try it out, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that since they clearly stated not to flash from ICS to ICS.
Could anyone point me in the right direction as to what I should do in order to make the switch to AOKP?
Links to both ROM's respective threads:
AOKP Build 40
Phantom's Blazer Rom
Thanks for your time.
You can just Odin the el26 cwm (sorry don't have the link to it on my phone) and flash AOKP from there.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
This is my method, it is 99.9% safe. You can also re-use it to go from other ROMs to any other ics ROM.
Download these drivers
Download this: OC ODIN File for EL26 and this: E4GT Root Utility
Using Titanium Backup, make a backup of all your stuff, or use your preferred back-upper, just not nandroid. I recommend buying the Pro version, because it will save you so many times, and the dev is great. It's a little expensive though for an app.
OC Odin back to EL26. The good thing about this is, the process is straight forward, and doesn't add to your flash counter, and does not yellow triangle either.
Open up e4gtauto-sfx.exe, option C, then I. This gives you CWM, And just in case, I do not recommend using other than standard CWM to flash ICS roms. but that's me.
When your phone reboots, it should have CWM, and be rooted, just load up the AOKP files, do a data wipe, and flash.
Thank you both for the replies
Would I be able to use calkulins format all to do the wipes? Or does that only work for certain ROMS? It seemed pretty fool proof when I used it, so I was wondering if I could just use that again and it would work just the same? I don't want to forget something and brick my phone as a result
And I'll look into titanium backup, thanks for the suggestion.

For ICS ROMs, I recommend to not use it, just do 1 system data wipe and you'll be fine.

Alright, but all I should need to do is install the EL26 + CWM and I can flash AOKP? I don't need to go back to a stock gingerbread ROM or anything, or will the OC EL26 CWM do that for me?
And you said you don't recommend calkulin's format all for ICS roms, but that's what I was told to use for the Phantom Blazer ICS rom when I was flashing it?
Also, one more question; what is "flash count" and is it a bad thing? I'll do some googling on it myself, but I'd like to hear your explanation because I don't always understand people's ways of describing things and usually take weird explanations to understand so yours would still be much appreciated just in case, thanks. ^_^

You just need to be on a safe recovery.... if you wipe data in an unconfirmed recovery you can cause a brick. Either use the el26 that all use or the el29-reboot kernel. Both will work no matter what you install regardless of you install (granted you flash a working rom). I prefer the el29 because you install via mobile Odin and it boots straight to safe CWM recovery.

EL29 Will Not Flash

I have an Epic 4G Touch that is rooted and running Gingerbread 2.3.4. I have been trying to flash EL29 through CWM and it seems to flash. But when my phone re-boots and I check the build number, it always says Gingerbread EG30. I noticed in the kernel and baseband version numbers it has the letters EL29, but the build number never changes. I'm looking to do the proper sequence of events to install ICS without wiping all my apps and data (if that is possible). Maybe I'm just not downloading the proper zip files. Any help is appreciated.

Use sfhub's one click to install EL26, then you should be able to flash an ICS ROM.
I would try to download the zip again and then try a different one if it doesn't work. On a side note I went from el29 to stock Deodexed FF18 and Team rejects universe 1.3 without wiping data and it was fine. Just remember to make a backup first just in case.

[HOW TO]How To Perform a Successful Nandroid Back Up and Restore On Twiz Jelly Bean

How To Perform a Successful Nandroid Back Up and Restore Using Mobile Odin And Agats FK23 CWM repack on these Jelly Bean LeaksI've had a LOT of confusion as to how to do this and several people saying they will wait to get in on this jelly goodness cause they're nervous about a backup. I've done this SUCCESSFULLY over 50 times and no problems yet... not a single bootloop and kept all my mods. So, This is how you can perform a successful nandroid back up and restore to your Jelly Bean Rom.. This is ONLY for Jelly Bean and Not if you are running ICS or GB.
To Create a Nandroid Back Up on Jelly Bean
1.WHILE YOU ARE RUNNING JELLY BEAN... Mobile odin Agat's Repacked FK23 kernel to obtain a JB recovery.
2.Select Back UP/ and Restore. - Back up
3. Let it run the back up and reboot. Rename to something that lets you know that its a JB back-up.
To Create a Restore Back to Your JellyBean Setup
After making a Jelly Bean Backup, Lets say you want to go back to ICS or you want to flash another Jelly Bean Leak, But you're just LOVIN the way you have it set up on this JB Black Bean and kinda leary about flashing something else without a back up of this sweet set up? Here's how to do it...
1. Get to a ICS or GB kernel with either Mobile Odin, PC Odin, or CWM zip.
2. After Wiping everthing, flash your ROM or flash your ICS restore point. Reboot phone as normal. Run your Rom..now back to JELLYBEAN.
3. WHILE YOU ARE RUNNING ICS...TO RESTORE..
a)boot into ICS recovery
b) wipe cashe, dalvik cashe, Factory Data Reset..
c) flash Either STOCK JB or THEMED .. JB Black Bean with Jelly ROM
d) when ROM finishes flashing reboot.. but no need to sign into Google.. we're about to do a restore.. Just click No to all of Google's questions, give them your name.. and hit finish. Now go to your "my files" in the app drawer, select ext. sd... navigate to where you have the Mobile Odin and Mobile Odin Flash kernel and install both. Then go back to the app drawer and open Mobile Odin. Select Kernel and navigate to where you have Agats FK23.tar or zip and flash it with Mobile Odin. reboot.
e)boot into JB recovery. go to backup/restore. -restore - select your JB restore point - yes ... let the restore run.... reboot.
You Just did a Successful Back Up and Restore on Jelly Bean without losing recovery ... for very long. Now if you feel the need but its not necessary, you can re flash the STOCK JB FK23 kernel.
While you are on JB..
Make SURE you are on the same CWM Agat FK23 JB kernel that you made the BackUp and do your Restore.

Thats correct. Just lik on a AOSP/CM kernel and ROM if you were to make a back up on CM for example you would restore with that same CM kernel. The same is true with JB to /ICS/GB. You have to be running a JB kernel. Since Agats Kernel is the only repack we have... even tho the JB kernel may have a couple issues being repacked, its the same recovery. We've all trusted this same recovery on ICS for some time now and its a good recovery on JB too
After reading that whole thing (yes, people still read the whole thing), these replies look so tiny, lol. Good work, man!

Naw that especially won't work with jb. It has to be a jb repack running jb. If you have an error and you are running a JB repack on JB, make sure that you
A) have a mounted sd card preferably external
B) enough memory on the sd to do the back up. I would keep 2gb at least. JB is much bigger than ics or gb.
B) the repack kernel is JB.
If it still gives you the error try rebooting back into JB recovery while running JB and try the backup again. Lemme know if you're v still having issues. I just did a back up and restore to and from ics yesterday.
