[Q] Bricked stock phone while using gmail. Advice? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was emailing myself about 8 pictures last night and managed to somehow brick my phone. I created the gmail message to myself with 8 photos attached. I pressed send, then launched the camera to snap a photo of something else. As soon as I took the photo, the phone said, "the application gmail process com.google.android.gm has stopped." I pressed okay then relaunched the gmail app to see if my message send.
This is when things got weird. The gmail app opened to an empty window. The window looked like the gmail app, just with no text or icons anywhere. Then whole phone became unresponsive. I could not pull down the status bar or go to the home screen. Since my power button is broken, I pulled the battery to reboot. When I put it back in, all I got was a solid blue light.
I did some research, but it seems everyone else gets the blue light of death from doing something stupid like pulling the battery midflash. I did try some of the suggestions I found, such as using a fresh battery or holding the volume button when the phone turns on. Nothing worked.
I was running the stock rom, probably GB27 or whatever was released in early march. If it makes a difference, I was running a stock rooted rom for a bit. Early last month, I needed to take the phone into sprint so I unrooted the phone and did an ota update. It ran fine like this until today.
What are my options to revive my galaxy, and how the hell did gmail brick my phone?
Thank you.

I would imagine that something was updating in the background, perhaps one of google hidden services and conflicted with your email. I would try using the one clicks to flash in the whole package again myself (maybe a bit drastic, but you can try one of the no data wipe versions if you like).

Are you able to get into Odin mode? I'm curious as to how you turn your phone on after battery pull without a power button? I'm not being smart, just sincerely curious. If you can't get into Odin mode, you can't do a one click. If you can't get anything to come on, I would suggest trying a dongle jig to get you into Odin mode so you can flash a one click and bring your phone back to life. They are like 4 bucks on Amazon. Google dongle jig sph-d710 epic 4g touch. Simply plugging it in will bring up Odin(if you're not completely bricked, which I don't believe you are) no power button needed. Good luck!

I've seen a blue light brick first hand and if I remember right the light does turn on with a battery in the phone. It's been a year now so I'm not sure.

This sounds similar to my issue here and another post here, neither of which appear to have any resolution yet. What is bricking our phones?!

I can turn it on without the power button by simply inserting the battery. It automatically boots up when the battery is inserted.
The device is completely bricked. I can not get into Odin or recovery mode. When I insert the battery I get a solid blue light for about 5 seconds. Then it shuts off for 1 second and comes back on again. Holding volume down while it is powering up does nothing.
Thanks for the dongle suggestion, I will check it out.

if it remains solid blue after that single flash then something triggered the brick bug. the usb jig is very unlikely to boot to odin for you. however should you buy one or make one please update good or bad. thats a hell of a weird brick though.

If the blue light is blinking on and off you need to try a fully charged battery or charging it in an external charger or 2nd device. The battery is below the minimum voltage threshold. If it's bricked the light stays on and doesn't turn off at all

Check for corrosion near the charger port on the logic board. The voltage regulator may have corrosion on it or cracked solder. The typical super brick lights up blue and stays lit up. Usually the pulse is an indication of incorrect voltage at the voltage regulator/charging circuit. Also check the connector pins in the battery bay to see if any are bent, broken, dirty or corroded.

Okay, I'll take the back casing off and have a look inside. I will report back soon. Thanks!
Edit: I checked the batteries with my multimeter. One read 4.2v. The others read about 3.7v. There is not much corrosion on the battery contacts. I have yet to find the regulator circuit on the board.

That 4.2 is way too high. It probably fried something on the mobo. The voltage should never peak above 3.8. I am betting that the one that reads 4.2 is the battery that was in the phone at the time. Too much voltage=broke device. So it is likely that the voltage regulator could not handle the higher volts and it fried.

Thank you very much for your response. I do not think it is the issue, however. Both of their batteries read 4.2 when full. I always charge them on the provided wall charger. The batteries say on the back not to charge above 4.2V. When charging batteries, you always charge with a voltage slightly higher than what is expected of the battery. (e.g. 12V car batteries charge at aprox. 14.4V). I do not think 500mV would fry a voltage regulator. I know the LM7805's are good for up to 35V on the input lead. Furthermore, this is the voltage with no load. It should be slightly less when the device is running.
However, I could be wrong. Perhaps the phone does have an extremely sensitive power management circuit. I will research this further and email Anker when I get the chance.

4.2 is a full charge... precisely 4255mV or 4.2V is a full charge ans 3421mV or 3.4V is a dead battery.

My battery has always read
3.7 to 3.8 volts. Even at a full charge. I have never seen it at a higher voltage. The output of the battery is 3.7, so why would that change depending on charge level?

My wife got anker batteries and had nothing but problems, if you have a different brand or oem yet those after full charge. Ffr the anker external chargers are notorious for killing any battery put in them. They're sub par, cheap crap.

Why does my phone act like it's plugged in all the time...

Just got my phone yesterday. Running Calk's 2.7 and ICS theme, set dpi to 160, looks and runs awesome. However, it always thinks it's either charging or plugged into USB. the red LED never wants to turn off. how can I remedy this problem?
Possibly try turning it off, booting to recovery, clearing cache/dalvik-cache, and then clear battery stats
Was it like this prior to rooting and custom rom?
Apk, that didn't do it.
yes, it did the same thing beforehand. Except takng out the battery solved the problem once.
Get it exchanged ASAP. This is a defect with the USB port. Has NOTHING to do with software. I was outside of my 14 day return and Sprint made me send it to Samsung to get fixed. $7 jig and two weeks later it was fixed.
With my tech background I would say check the charging port. Could be a metal shaving or *gasp* corrosion!

Shouldn't matter. The phone has a one year warranty from Samsung. I bought my wife an Epic on craigslist last year and had it repaired under warranty.

Yup. I had the same problem. I think it is related to the USB port (from reading a few SGS2 threads). I took it to the Sprint Store and they said the USB port looks good. They reset it and it still acted that way. However, 2 hours later the problem is gone. They ordered me a replacement so I'm still going to take it because who knows why the problem starts. I did have Calk's rom and also have the battering monitoring widget by 3C and I had cleared the battery stats multiple times prior to the symptoms starting. Just proving as many clues as possible...
What do you mean by reset?
Funny I see you have this problem (not really funny) because I noticed the same thing last night and just figured it was Rom related.
It sucks... can you give more details about the reset process? Soft reset?

I had the same problem.
The red light was on all the time, only went out when I got a text. If I pulled the battery the phone would show like it was charging as soon as I put it back in. It would show the battery animation on the screen not plugged in.
After a battery pull the phone would also not boot using the power button, had to boot to recovery and boot from there.
Took it to sprint, they gave me a new battery. Solved the problem only until phone was plugged in to charge. Then started all over again.
Turned out to be a problem with the USB port and they ordered me a replacement.
got it fixed! looks like the pcb on the port was sitting too close to the lower edge of the phone. pushed it up gently and now it seems to be working. thanks for the direction, nivron.
my other concern is that battery life sucks ass. drains really quick (at the rate of ~6%/hr!). again, running calk 2.7 + ics theme. also, taking out the battery seems to reduce the life 20%. what's the deal...
Hmm, now the USB cable needs to be at a certain angle for the phone to charge. Is there any way a Sprint store could furnish a replacement for me?

[Q] Phone says that it's always charging?

I don't know how to go about this, because, to my knowledge, its not effecting the phone in any way. Maybe a little drain, but that could be 4.2's problem. But regardless, my phone is always "on charge" no matter where I am. On any ROM this happens, so I know its a physical thing. I've been told that you can use a knife to push the contact up a little, but that only works until I plug it back in the next day. So...... Any thoughts on how to fix this without replacing the charging port? (To my knowledge, that involves soldering very small parts.)

Well if it worked by bending the contacts up but goes back when you plug it in. Have you tried a different cable? Also have you cleaned out your charging port?

Agreed. At this point you could be having issues where you can't see it, such as where the port is connected to the board.
Had to take port completely off before i noticed... Sprayed with acid (not recommended) and cleaned it, rinsed it, soldered back in place = good to go..... For now

Hi jeep, i have a similar problem but i'm not sure it's the same, i happened a few days ago when myi changed the battery and pugged in the charger, i noticed there was something strange, the phone's screen showed the battery was charging before i pugged in back (just when i placed the new battery). Now it behaves as it's always plugged in charging just when placing the battery in, the phones is turned off and the screen shows charging battery icon (i've tried 2 more batteries), and also there's no usb connection to the PC either.
It's a very bothering problem, the phons won't go into deep sleep, and the screen goes to the screensaver all the time (as it where pugged in charging)...
I always repair my own electronics, months ago i replaced the power button, do you think it could be a bootloader issue or just the micro-usb port?; when you fixed yours, do you think i should take it completely off and resolder?
Any advice will be really appreciated!!
Thanks

[Q] Galaxy S3 died..?

The other day I noticed my S3 was not charging correctly.
When I plugged it in it would make all the correct noises and signs, but the battery was dropping.
Changed out the charger, still the same thing.
Changed out the cable...still no go.
Finally I turned it off, removed the cover and battery, placed it back and and it charged just fine when powered down.
Proceed to the next day and it's still doing the same thing.
So once again I power it down, plug it and let it charge.
I get up this morning and notice that it did not charge, no red led or charging screen was active either.
So now I have nothing.
It will not turn on. The only thing it does is show me a red led when I plug it in, but goes no further.
Nothing major has been done recently.
I do have a stock rom that's been rooted and flashed onto it via Odin, but I did that months ago when JB came out for TMo.
Any ideas or am I SOL?
I think I'm also out of luck with the warranty as it's rooted, and it once took a drop and hit a corner (the one time I took it out of the case!)
I would try another battery.

Okay so luckily my S3 isn't dead or bricked.
However, it will no longer charge batteries.
It reports that it's plugged in and charging, but if anything it's actually discharging quicker.
I swapped out batteries and it turns back on, but will not charge.
Other S3 will charge my battery no issue though, so that's not it.
I have tried 4 different chargers and 5 different cables.
All produce the same result.
I don't know if the S3 is compatible with them, but I've tried two current monitors.
One reports no amperage going into the phone, the other will show a -5mah load when charging.
I cleaned out the bottom connector with some contact cleaner, still no go.
Since the phone will also die while off, I feel it's not an Android issue.

So I flashed the latest 4.1.2 JB with Odin (stock but already rooted via root66 rom)
Still nothing, battery does not charge when plugged in.
When I was booting into download mode, it would keep restarting when it was plugged in.
I had to boot into download mode, then plug in the usb (to my laptop)
This really sucks. I've really had no issues with this phone but this incident is leaving a bad taste in my mouth Samsung. :crying:

Just so you know, when it is plugged in, it will not power on into system, recovery or download mode. That is normal. As for it not charging, All I can guess is either a shorted or broken pin inside the phones usb port. If this is the case, and you dont have insurance for it, you may need to get a spare battery. Ive seen some that come with a desktop charger where you plug the battery into the charger itself.

I just found it odd I could boot up to the point and it would shut back down, so figured it was worth mentioning.
The outer port is not the issue from what I can see.
For now I ended up buying external batteries I have to swap out,
Really sucks having to swap out a couple a day. My next phone has to have a wireless charger at this point.

You could have gotten a wireless charger for the S3, I had one but ended up selling it because I never really used it.
Sounds like it's the S3 itself. You could order the part online and watch a step by step tutorial on YouTube if you feel confident enough to do it yourself.

Phone all of a sudden not charging

So suddenly my note 2 running tweaked has started charging real slow then all off a sudden will not charge at all. Ive tried several chargers and now have noticed with or without the battery i can enter only download mode and it will show up on odin but not charge the battery. as soon as i try to restart instead of entering download mode it will try and start but just shut down. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas or has seen this issue? thanks. so considering it will enter odin is it possibly a battery issue, although it will only go into download mode nothing else? thanks again
The issue is not the ROM, I can tell you that much.
I would suggest flashing the stock kernel. If that does not help the issue, you need a new battery. 100% positive. I say that because you claim you have tried other chargers.

awesome i am currently only 6500 miles from home in south korea.......seems like samsung is pretty popular here. lol everyone has a note2 here i swear. gonna find a battery and hopefully it solves the issue.
I'm having a sort of similar issue.
This is a brand new issue for me. I've been rooted running Jedi X-14 for about 2 months or so now. I went on vacation to Guatemala and that's when the issues started arising. I brought along the same charger I used here back in the states, and it worked fine the first day or two, then new things started happening. It started taking about 5-10 seconds for the Note to realize the charger was plugged in. Then when the charger was plugged in the bottom of the screen (actual touch screen) started becoming a bit unresponsive and laggy. The phone no longer charged as fast as it used to. Then sometimes I would plug it in, and it wouldn't actually charge...it would make the noise recognizing something has been plugged in, but would say "Please Connect charger". If the phone completely died this was almost a guarantee and I would need to plug/unplug/plug until the dead battery icon changed into the charging battery icon.
I'm back in the states now, haven't had a chance to reset/install a new rom or anything, and my phone earlier tonight went dead. Spent a good 2 minutes fiddling with it, it eventually turned on, said no charger was inserted, and turned off. Since then I have not been able to get it on. As soon as I plug it in it shows dead battery, and very rarely it will start to boot up the battery charging symbols (battery symbol with green bar moving), but even if it did, it would do it for 1-3 seconds and shut off.
I'm able to get into Recovery Mode/Download Mode, and the phone will actually stay on as long as it's on the charger (wall outlet).
It's not the battery, as I have another official Note 2 battery (at work currently, and I switched them the other day, to see if the other battery was the issue). Also I have different USB cords/chargers, and they all give the same issue.
From CWM Recovery I was able to wipe Cache/Factory reset the phone, but it still does not boot up. Any advice is appreciated. I can probably get it on when I get my other battery which is near fully charged at work, but I won't be at work for another 2 days or so, so I'm looking for a fix so I can have a working phone in the meantime. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I was able to charge the phone while in recovery mode to about 10%...It then turned on...after a few minutes however the charger just stopped charging the phone. Tried another charger same thing. Tried both chargers with an s3 I have, and they work perfectly fine. Even going back to recovery mode won't charge it anymore.
I was on vacation in Central America and the same thing happened to me. It works fine in the states now.

Maybe its the oversea power grid? If you are using just a wall converter (US to Wherever) and still using your american AC adapter, you have to realize the power grids arent as clean or as constant as they are here in the states and can actually ruin an AC charger. Can you charge it via your PC using the USB cable? I know the stock Kernel has a near trickle charge though but still, it might be enough to charge it for use.
Something to keep in mind, the S3 has a lower power draw than the note 2. The screen alone on the note2 can draw more than 600Mah which is more than a standard USB adapter can output. Thats not counting the draw on the battery from cpu frequency or radios.
Also I can also assure you that bad power grounds cause a touchscreen to act up. I have an iconia a500 that acts up in the same way with a generic charger, yet, with the stock charger it works fine. It has less power filtering in its charging circuitry. I still have ungrounded outlets in my house which cause the issue. Too much interference.
Just a guess as both you and ryan are experiencing similar issues and are both away from home.

I figured maybe my charger from the US I had brought to Guatemala had broken...when I got back to the States, I bought a Micro USB charger from one of those vending machines in the airport (says it's a 5V2 1A wall charger- 2.1A output)... Having tried different chargers, batteries and outlets, I can only assume it's something with the Hardware no? I was able to reset the phone, and installed Jedi Master 14 to replace Jedi X14, to see maybe if something with the ROM was faulty, and that didn't help.
Phone no longer charges in CWM Recovery like it did last night. Phone turns off, and has that dead battery symbol on the screen (empty battery with a loading circular icon on it). It will no longer go any further.
Tried charging thru my computer to the same effect... worst case scenario I have to do a warranty exchange, however I'd like to avoid it as I believe T-Mobile no longer offers the White Note 2 and I don't like the titanium colored one, I'd have to un-root/stock rom/Triangle Away, and then re-root new phone (I'm a complete N00b at this stuff so it's time consuming for me to do), and honestly I'd just to avoid it if at all possible.

Well, its tough to say without using a multimeter and checking a few points, but, a power spike could fry the charging circuit in the phone. Thats the worst case scenario. Only thing you could do if thats the case would be to get a second battery and external charger.

Luckily both can be gotten from eBay for under usd $20. Its probably worth checking asurion to see if they have white ones in Stock. You just have to weigh the cost of a warranty replacement the hassle of changing batteries every day.

I just experienced the same problem with my N2 over the weekend. Went to Bestbuy and got the $50 battery charger and extra battery (Check local availability) price matched to Amazon.com for $30 (with free shipping under more buying choices), brought it home to charge my completely wasted original battery and used the one in the box. Sure enough, it is the charging port. The new battery did the same thing as the old one, it showed it was being charged by the little lightning "icon" over the battery, but the battery was still draining. Although the lightning icon was there, there was no "bing-bing" tone (in the stock rom w/ root) to indicate the cable was ACTUALLY connected.
What is interesting is I think the battery icon shows up as "processing" if the USB pins are connected, but if just the +/- terminals are used in the cord (like the one that comes with the battery dock, not a MicroUSB cable -> USB port -> power adapter that comes with the phone, but power adapter -> MicroUSB) nothing registers on the phone even if it's completely powered down.
Called Tmo today and they are shipping a warranty replacement to me for free, I just have to wait for Ground shipping (didn't pay the $20 for "overnight"). Hopefully it'll come by next Wednesday, as I'm leaving on vacation then. With all this drama on the phone, I actually ended up ordering a Nokia 521 (give old WinMo a try again) from HSN over the weekend as a backup phone for $100. I felt like I was going to die not having a phone for 2 solid days.
Normally they send one out , then you return yours. The battery on this phone is phenomenal, so using an external battery charger and swapping them out would be viable while waiting for the new one to come in the mail id think.
Im hoping these phones dont get usb charging problems often. I might just mod mine to take wireless charging. My s2's microusb port died on me.

I'm actually quite disappointed that Tmo told Samsung to not wire up the wireless charging leads on this phone. I would be totally on-board for wireless charging a'la Nexus or my Touchpad. My Microusb connector wouldn't even see any use other than when to flash a rooted update.
I'm OK with a soldering iron, but I don't want to tear the thing apart to hook them up myself. Seems like it would be a great way to void the warranty, OR disable my Squaretrade warranty.
Just wanted to drop back by since I was about to send back my N2 to Tmo... I unrooted, triangle awayed and finally flashed "clean" firmware directly from Samsung via ODIN.... both batteries are now charging via both USB and Power adapter.
WTF

Unresponsive Phone

I bought my Mom a used Inc2 on eBay. Rooted/S-OFF running SlimRom 4.2.2 on Page Plus.
My Mom messages me on Facebook to tell me she thinks the phone is broken. I have to agree. I don't know what she did, but she seems to think she had somehow got the phone into fastboot/bootloader/recovery and was trying to pull the battery to get it back to normal. She thinks she selected something before the battery pull, but doesn't know what.
Phone won't turn on (no splash screen, no boot animation, no nothing).
No LED when phone is plugged in.
Tried several charging cables.
Tried switching with a battery known to work and be charged.
Nothing.
Anyone else ever have a similar issue? Is there any way to repair this (taking apart phone and replacing parts)? Or should I just buy her a new phone?
Pull the battery completely..wait a sec with your finger on the power to completely discharge it ...pop battery back in volumedown +power to get into recovery check to see if she formated anything fix w.e profit perhaps ?

Battery is my guess
My guess was the battery too. Your mom may not have put it back in correctly (My mom sometimes can't see the little gold connectors without her glasses.) Make sure the connectors match up.
If that wasn't the problem, try using a (cell phone) universal battery charger.
(Amazon.com has them for cheap, and they save your life if your usb port ever dies until you can replace the charging port.)
Once you know the battery is charged, and put in correctly, you can tell if it's the phone or not.
If she wiped the system cache, you won't boot. But, you can always try placing a new ROM on the SD card (easiest way is using a desktop computer with an SD card reader,) and re-install the phone's operating system (rom).
Even if the phone is somehow bricked: you can still get her data and pictures off the SD card with any SD card reader connected to a computer.

Thanks for the responses. But alas, it is not a simple matter of battery wrong way. My gf has the same phone and hers works. I tried switching batteries and the one from my Mom's phone works and has about 40% juice in it.
But her phone won't respond at all. When you plug in the USB charger, the LED should come on to signify that the phone is receiving power from the wall/computer/etc... There's nothing.
The phone doesn't turn on at all. I can't get into recovery because it won't power on at all.
She said the phone booted a couple times before I got it, but got stuck on the boot animation and never made it into the actual ROM. Now it won't come on at all. I guess the phone is bricked completely (by no fault of the software - I think this is some sort of hardward issue but I just don't know what)
I guess I'll activate her old phone. Thanks for trying to help.
(I really thought holding the power button without battery in might work because I had used that trick once before, but alas, nothing)
Maybe the power button is dirty try to clean it there's I tear down guide...you won't need to go far into it tho verrrry simple...voids warranty for sure

I thought about that, too... But why wouldn't the LED turn on when connected to USB?
Warranty isn't an issue lol. I bought this thing refurbished on eBay.
Who knows maybe it dropped busting the led and power button...dinc forensics
O yea if not then its hardware software wouldn't make the phone not charge

I have same problem
I have same problem and when i got maintenance center they told me must change the IC flash for phone :crying:
Check the USB port
These phones came out so long ago I imagine original warranty is long gone. I that's the case, might as well open it up and check or fix the power button like chilly suggests.
There are little ribbon cables everywhere inside, for things like the USB port, screen digitizer...and if the phone was dropped, it could have squished the power button, and easily, jarred a ribbon loose. Checking them all out and inspecting the power button might be all you need to do for a fix. At the end of it all, even if nothing is solved, you can sell the phone for parts on ebay and make at least $45.
I thought about doing that once, but I'm glad I inspected mine before I hit the "sell button." I watched some tear-down videos on youtube and decided to give it a go. Now I'm much more comfortable with tinkering with phones. It can be a nice learning experience.
It started when I once tried to plug in my phone in the dark, and I actually managed to cram the USB charger into the phone upside-down!
What this did was make the phone un-chargable, even though the usb cable would still fit in there just fine.
Same symptoms you are having: cord goes in, no light comes on. Yet, the cord charges other phones just fine.
On ebay you can buy new USB ports for about $6-9. I purchased one, found a how-to video on youtube, and repaired mine myself with just a cheap torc x screwdriver set that I purchased for $8.
Fix worked 100%. Don't give up just yet.
