I just updated to a Froyo stock ROM yesterday, and don't like the way the screen now rotates in 3 planes.
Does anyone know how to change the rotation to 2 planes only, the way it was in 2.1?
In other words it should show in portrait mode, and counter-clockwise landscape, only.
With 2.2 it also does clockwise landscape.
With CyanogenMod you can just edit in the settings menu.
Unfortunately, I think TheBiles is correct. You will have to flash a ROM that has the functionality (or lack there of, as the case may be) in order to disable the functionality.

phooey.
Well, I will see if I can get used to it. Luckily I am rooted, so if it drives me as crazy as I think it will, I will follow your suggestion.
Thanks for the reply
I've tried Google without any luck..so I'm guessing this is a no..but I'm trying to find an app that disables tilt in certain situations only. I know I can disable tilt thru the settings..but that disables tilt EVERYWHERE. I'm just looking to disable tilt on my homescreen..while still being able to tilt while browsing Interwebz and whatnot. Seems like it should be an easy enough function..considering BB's have an app for it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok 1 - Android is not BlackBerry. Not even on the same level as one another, so just get that out of your head.
Second off, wtf do you mean on your homescreen? Sense doesn't turn landscape unless you changed the Skin to one built with landscape. Just switch it to the stock HTC skin, problem solved, it never goes landscape unless you open the keyboard.
If you're not using Sense (CM 6.1 or something) check the settings, as it usually has a way to disable homescreen rotation in their own personal settings.
Try CM6. It has the option for a custom power control widget to be embedded into the statusbar. You can put a toggle for rotation too. You loose the sense home and widgets though, but imo stock > sense. Or you could try quickdesk and put a rotation toggle widget on it.

Orly? Android isn't Blackberry? Good to know.
So lets begin...in order to "hide" all the bunk apps because I wasn't rooted, flashed, s-offed etc yet (all the things necessary to remove said apps) I had to download Launcher Pro (which was highly recommended). As soon as this was done..then yes..I was no longer able to use stock Sense. So now..my homescreen always tilts on me..which bugs the **** outta me. Could I just go back to stock Sense? Sure I could..but I'd rather have what should be a basic app to allow me to pick and choose where and when I'd like my screen to tilt. And I've grown to like how my homescreen looks over the stock look. Yes..I can disable autotilt in the settings..but then I can't even tilt the screen into landscape for the browser. So maybe I'm missing something here that someone else can point out..

I am on a stock ROM myself still, but I know that Cyanogen has a lot of customisation options. I wonder if it's worth asking in the CM thread over on the G2 side (because the DZ one is dead) out whether that has options that might help you ?
You want to disable "rotation" all over your phone AND to be able to use the browser in Landscape mode.
If that is the only thing you want, you can set your browser to "landscape mode only"
Now if you have a longer list of requirements on what apps get permisions to rotate the screen etc, I think you may bigger problems

there was nothing offensive or said with an attitude in this post. it was only til you noobs came on here with misplaced android pride. he didnt compare berrys to droids. he simply said they have an app for it.
this is a great question. the tilt function seems almost too sensitive. it would be great to maybe tweak it somehow to make it so you really have to hold the phone sideways....instead of slightly tilt the phone. an app to block it in certain situations is good but i feel that id have to micro manage too much to specify every single situaiton id want tilt or not.
for the record... i'm am a die hard android user and his post did not push my buttons at all. this post is very useful.
ADW launcher has an option in system preferences for home screen orientation.
Just change it from auto to portrait, that's what I did.

Wow no one answered your question. Well here it is, when you are on the home screen hit the Menu - Behavior Settings and uncheck Enable Auto-Rotation.
That will disable auto rotation on the home screen. Now go into Settings - Display and make sure Auto-rotate screen is checked. This way you will be able to but your screen into landscape mode when surfing the web or using apps that auto rotate. Now if you want to be able to choose specific apps, that I have no knowledge of doing. Hope this helps.

Tasker (on the Market) can be set up to enable/disable auto-rotation on many different triggers, like when a certain app is launched. Plus it can do a lot more that that! Check it out I think it's well worth the money.

Awesome! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks to you sir. And btw..It wasn't as simple as just setting my browser settings to landscape because I also like to view texts and im's in landscape mode. It never even occurred to me to check the Launcher Pro settings..so thanks again for that

Excellent.
Glad I could help. I know I was having the same issue at one point in time and it was very annoying. I didn't want to give up on Launcher Pro because the widgets are awesome and it gave me "sense" on my stock android! If you haven't played with Launcher Pro Plus, you should give it a whirl. The widgets that are unlocked with it are definitely top notch.

This is the correct answer if using Launcher Pro, I'd assume it would be pretty similar for adw launcher too.

The crazy thing is I actually NEVER played with ADW, yet I keep hearing how really good it is. So good in fact, that some custom ROMS have it built in. Would you recommend it?

Not only those but what about the Friendstream widget? It is damn near an exact replica of the sense widget. I also like how when you use the picture frame widget, you can resize it. That feature is only available on LPP not LP.

Every time I try ADW I am always disappointed with the jerkiness/lack of smooth scrolling. I try it once every few months but never stuck with it.
Definitely Launcher Pro for me, smooth, customisable, practical,... who could ask for more?

Hey, I wanted to check if anyone else had luck locking rotation in landscape? Seems I cannot do it. Every time I do disable rotation it changes to portrait and sticks with that - any ideas?
Yes, same here. I just used the widget, rotation lock from google play and it works. Don't use the LG one. Just put the widget on your homescreen and you can lock the rotation in portrait or landscape.

What specific widget do you use? None of the ones I've tried works, they just return it to portrait mode and lock it in that orientation.
You can enable rotation in the lock screen by going to settings -> Display -> Rotation -> And checking enable auto-rotation and rotate the lock screen.

This only locks it in portrait mode for whatever reason, even if you hit the toggle while in landscape, it will just return to portrait and then lock.

Thanks, this works, although not flawlessly as it kinda freaks out and switches back and forth between the orientations before locking.

When disabled it will lock it into portrait because that is the default orientation of the tablet. That is a feature that is to be expected. But when enabled you can freely rotate the lock screen any way that you have the main screen set to be able to rotate to.

I understand that, but this leads to a problem when I am laying on my side in bed and watching something in landscape, mainly with the YouTube app, as it thinks I'm using the tablet in portrait mode.
+1
To be honest I have just bought my G Pad so it s not on it yet.
But I have used the same program on phones and tablets before without problems.
It locked my homescreen in portrait whenever i wanted it too.
Hi all,
Normally I never use my tablet in landscape mode (seeing how websites mostly are longer than they are wide) but recently I bought a bluetooth keyboard (if anyone is wondering a logitech k810, which is amazing).
One thing which I can't seem to figure out is the use of the landscape mode at the homescreen and app drawer (all other applications don't make a problem out of it).
The what's what:
- Nexus 7, 2013 edition
- stock, rooted
- Nova launcher prime
Anyone an idea whether this is just not possible or whether I am forgetting a check box somewhere?
Thanks!

seems your nova settings. Try to go into nova settings, then look and feel, and then set screen orientation to auto.
Has to be Nova. My stock 4.4 rotate works fine like always.

Once I changed the "default" to autorotate it is rotating like a champ!

I don't have any mods or ROM's or not even rooted or unlocked but since day 1 I have not had my screen rotation lock icon or cant find it AT ALL in settings on my Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge. All previous Android phones I have had there has been no problem locating this setting. It is usually just in the swipe-down from top settings menu.
Please see attached picture. I found this picture on the web. My phone does not have that icon at all and cant even find it anywhere in settings to turn it on.
My goal is to have this icon or find the setting so I can LOCK my auto-screen rotation when I want to such as when I am in the grocery store using my Google Keep to check off my grocery list. It becomes a major issue.
If my phone is just buggin out and for whatever reason doesn't have it in its OS install for whatever reason is there a third party app for screen orientation lock?
Thanks!

I wish it was that easy. That is no a screen shot of my phone. I am attaching pictures of my phone now.
OK when you have your phone on the home screen you remember how you would swipe down the top and you would get some icons look for the one that says portraits and you should see it has a little lock on it touch that button and your auto rotate should appear hopefully this helps it did on my galaxys7 lmk if it did
