I love my Galaxy Nexus, but what's driving me crazy is how it shuts down any app whenever I switch out of it, even if I use the -completely useless so far- multitasking soft key. So for instance I'm waiting for a YouTube video to load, so I temporarily switch out of it to do something else (this is a smartphone isn't it) and come back, and find it reopening the video as if I just did it. Same thing with the browsers. I have 2-3 tabs open, and decided to check out something on the homescreen. Big mistake. When I get back will have to wait for all the tabs to reload.
Anyway to keep apps running in the background?

I think YouTube just does that. It has been mentioned before. No problem with the browser.
My grandma beat me down and took my nexus. Sent from a jitterbug with beats by dre.
If your using a Verizon nexus, it partly has to do with Verizon's cdma network, not just android. Plus it would slow your phones operation down and you would see more force closes due to limited resources.
Edit— sorry everybody, did a little drunk forum trolling last night. Everything I posted was false. The other poster was correct and I deserve all the shame.

Most likely you have an app running thats killing processes. If you have any task manager/killer remove it immediately.
As far as youtube goes, youtube will NEVER keep a video paused or continue playing if you leave. It saves what you were on, but thats it. few reasons for that.
Now, my experience today and no issues.
Facebook, Browser (4 tabs), NFL'11, and twitter all running and they all saved what i was doing and none of them ever closed.
in fact, 3 hours after, the 4 tabs were still open. I've actually had tabs open for 3 days straight that i forgot to close and the browser just made new ones.
and these are not just text sites. I had the Battlefield 3 battlelog, nfl.com, battlefield wiki, and the verge mobile all on.
My browser will keep pages open for days if I wanted to...strange! You're using stock browser?

I can't find one fact in your entire statement. What could CDMA possibly have to do with it? Also, you wouldn't see more 'force closes'. When Android runs low on RAM it selects the oldest cached app and ends it, unless it's active.
once again, amateur thread. **** needs to be closed down

I have this exact same problem, with the browser and even with games.
I have no task manager. I have watchdog which i believe doesnt kill any processes itself and i have juice defender; could that be whats causing this problem?
I keep hearing about this, am I seriously the only one that can swipe apps away from the recent apps and they actually close?

possibly you are...
because for me and more than 5 of my friends using the same phone, those swiping aways only close the shortcut regardless of the app running in background or not.
DO THE FOLLOWING
1) go to settings, apps, running apps.
2) with that open, hit the multitask button that shows all apps running.
3) swipe away
4) watch it get killed off your running apps list.
5) grow up
Im not sure what all the *****iness is about but the problen I and i believe the OP were having was quite real and serious.
Any time you switched out of an app or game, even if only for a second, when you switched back it would restart the app or game and in the case of the browser reload the webpage.
Now, ive uninstalled watchdog and the problem seems to have gone away.
Is anybody else using watchdog having this problem?
People need to understand that devs put this code INTO THEIR APPS. Killswitches are hard coded into apps to let the system kill them if they have been in the background. A good example is Opera Mobile. It has a low priority that is coded in BY THE DEV.

Not possibly, I know I am. Home key keeps it running, back key caches/closes it. Certain apps perform differently as foreground tasks and some as background tasks. I think some can't be multi tasked like big games and stuff but as previously said that's on the dev side not androids.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Sorry for the vague title.
When apps that require additional data (GTA III, Spectral Souls, ect) are downloading, I find that I need to keep them running in the foreground.
If I open GTA III, let it start downloading data, switch to home and do other stuff, then switch back, the app immediately closes and I have to resume the download by relaunching the app.
I am not familiar with downloading data for apps so I am not sure if this is expected behavior or if there is some issue with my tablet.
Thank you in advance.
I have experienced the same issue.
Also even when I play a game and go to the home page to look at something and try and get back after a few minutes the game restarts.
Its as if multitasking does not work or the applications are being killed.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
One of new features in jelly-bean is closing non used apps automatically instead of keeping them in ram
like android does normally, to controll dfault system behaviour in this case go to setting/developer options/keep activities, this may be causing problems, from developer point of view every app should be killed when user quits is., and android activity life cycle was sometimes real pain in the ass, especially in case of porting apps from other platforms.

nope..i had the app a year ago..i deleted it solely because of the battery drain..sucks to hear that after all this time it hasnt improved
I have to confirm that the ebay app cause massive wakelocks that drain the battery very fast.
I think i will uninstall it until they resolve.
VIP
Famous developers that working in famous apps don't think to end user, their think only at their money, that's why little app developed by 1 devs sometimes are better than official app, this "big" developers think your phone is their, adding stupid things only for make "new feature list" ( facebook story with their "own" camera apps ), they don't think at battery or something that, because their don't use this.
Serious developer don't use at 4 wakelocks at minute for utility App
Serious developer don't use HTML5 instead java ( Facebook story )
Serious developer use app before release.
Uninstall it and use ebay from PC, More secure and more fast.

i had the same problem, just installed older version and it's back to normal, new version use new way to display notifications
Battery drain
I'm having the same experience with the app on my HTC One X+, if it makes you feel any better. I disabled all notification alterts and it seems a little better but I'm considering downgrading the app version instead if that doesn't work.
im using it on a SE arc S, I have to say iv noticed battery life has been worse since i installed it, its a shame because its actually a great functioning wee app, if only it would sleep more efficiently
just stopping by to report that the ebay app killed my battery yesterday within 20 minutes... 30% down..
If you use this app often uninstalling it is not an option of course. what you can do if you are on a rooted device is install Titanium Backup and freeze the app when your not using it. When you want to use the app simply unfreeze it and do your business. That will keep the app from killing you battery when it is not being used.
Use greenify, problem solved!

if you sign up before the end of june it will be 7.99 for life. there is a little pin on the artists, albums. its called "pin" thats basically making tracks/albums/artists available offline.
this thing works AMAZING. ive tried spotify, pandora, and loved rhapsody. but this is truly innovative.
if you swipe left from the right of the screen when your streaming a "radio" it lets you peek at the next song. and if you click on the top icon "a list with a music note" it lets you see the entire radio playlist ahead of you. you can delete songs you dont want, and even rearrange the order of songs. you can also replay, and rewind songs your listening to. pandora, rhapsody. bye bye
Really loving this app update. Play Music sucked hard before this; album art and the little progress circle would disappear anytime you closed out the app, crashed for me, just generally not something I'd expect from Google. Now we've got $7.99 a month unlimited streaming with no ads that works on my phone AND through any browser, very nice looking new UI (even if some people aren't feeling the orange), I'm very happy! Spotify Premium might soon be cancelled!
Now if I can get gapless playback to actually work, it'll get that five star rating.
A weird thing I've noticed a couple times is that I'll choose a song to stream, and it'll work, but the audio quality is pretty crappy. To fix, I choose another song and then back to the first one, and voila, good quality. Not sure if it's my gloriously slow Sprint connection or an issue with the app.
I'm on the trial too... Searched for different artist and built a playlist with around 65 songs and now All Access added around 20 more automatically to my queue based on the artist and songs I was listening to.
I was swtiching between Slacker, Spotify and Grooveshark (locked in $3mo introductory)... Can't compare paid services with the first two since the free one gave what I was looking for. But this is basically Grooveshark on steriods! It's a bit tricky to get used to the UI and add songs to queue, tap on the wrong area and it plays that song and deletes your current queue creating a new station based on that artist.
What I don't like so far is the "dancing" album art when in app "listening now", flips side to side although looking at better it seems that the album art is too big and its doing a scroll to show all of it. Find it a bit annoying, but it could be just me :silly: It's missing the Android share feature, apparently it only shares on Google+ and apparenlty you only have that feature if you have the G+ app installed. I don't and the share option is missing, a friend has G+ installed and the option appears for him. Might need further confirmation... I really don't use G+ so I haven't seen the need to install it, barely use FB anyhow.
Would be nice to have the ability to change the theme of the UI, have different options. The orange/white layout is ok, but it's a bit too shocking. Bet some themers are already decompiling this thing and seeing if its possible to change it around :fingers-crossed:
I tested it with my car radio, Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS, with BT and sound output is really good. The display shows artist and track but it didn't show the track time, maybe in the next update.
So far, this is a keeper and good for the $9.99 but even better for the $7.99 introductory fee
Edit - Widget should have dislike or thumbs down button, only has thumbs up...
But all in all this is a great for a new service launch!
Only downside so far is the lack of sd card ability. No problem on my GS3, bit on my kids' Conquers, not so great.

Okay, spoke a little too soon. The ui and functionality for one wanting music "pinned" for off-line listening is not very intuitive. The download speeds are atrocious, which I see has been a Play Music issue for a while. No way to cancel pinning/downloading, and apart from clearing app data, I don't see a way to remove tracks from the phone.
I love the sound quality and the equalizer over Rhapsody. I love having the ability to download to more than 3 devices. I hope that they do some improving during this trial phase, because I like the sound and the principle. Even Rhapsody responding to the competition and improving would be terrific.

I'm downloading a few pinned songs now, very slow indeed!
As for deleting them, there is a clear cache option in settings but my assumption is that it'll delete all the songs you've downloaded or cached during playback. There is an unpin option if you tap the bottom left of the song tile (horizontal ...), try that and see if it removed that particular track. I'll give all that a shot when it finishes downloading, at this rate it'll be tomorrow morning
Nothing but f/c's for me. And it's atrociously ugly. Google effed this app up. Back to the previous version for me... orange and white, what is google thinking? The new gtalk- hangouts is even worse...

Let me make this clear, this thread is not about getting rid of Google services but google play services....
Being a GNEX user we have cherished so many updates from 4.0.1 to 4.4.4, courtesy of some gr8 devs and teams. Every update gave us the courage to give a sarcastic look at some of the flagships still lagging behing, but deep down inside every power GNEX user knew that those updates aren't making the phone better simply bcoz its not designed for it.It all started with the arrival of brutal "Google Play Services".
TBH we all got scroogled however we are not ashamed of it coz if a service is good then there is no point in not using it, but the experience we get across different devices creates a different opinion about the entire service and thats what happened with play services..
Taking google play services out of ur phone gives u hell a lot of advantage but the right alternatives. I decided to take it out of my GNEX and now i am one of the Happiest men on the planet who uses open source apps wherever possible.
I am about to list the alternatives i used and the experience i got....
I am a LiquidSmooth or Vanir user combined with the dirtyness of DirtyV kernel, F2FS, ART, xlouder patch...
Market : Since i dont flash Gapps no Play Store but FDROID is gr8, clean and simple. For apps unavailable at FDROID i use APKLEECHER
Browser : Of course Firefox and Lightning browser both available in FDROID. I use firefox for some impt. stuffs like mobile banking, etc and lightning browser for daily browsing that includes social networks fb, g+.
Music Player : Ur choice but i am a huge lover of Noozy.
Video Player :VLC available at FDROID :highfive:
Office Apps : Office Mobile, Microsoft does a gr8 job there.
Email Client : AOSP or K-9 mail available at FDROID
Proxy : Obviously Orbot by Guardian Projects available at FDROID
IM Clients : It was easy for me since most of my friends dont use Hangouts but whatsapp...pls for the sweet love of god please try Telegram available at FDROID. It got encryption too and open source. I am working on migrating my friends to Telegram. Also i do use ChatSecure available at FDROID for my gtalk and facebook accounts chat... :fingers-crossed:
Now comes the most impt part,
Cloud,Contacts and Cal Syncs : This is the hardest part u can come across, i had my solution OWNCLOUD
i have a raspberry pi and i turned it to an OWNCLOUD server, easiest way is to Check out ARKOS if u have a rpi or beaglebone black. With that OWNCLOUD i can instantly upload photos, videos just like g+ and also using an app DAVDROID at FDROID u can sync ur calender and contacts to ur Mobile. :good:
Maps : I use OsmAnd which is an ON/Offline maps app where u can download data to ur phone. Its pretty decent for finding directions but dont expect the sophistications of GMAPS, btw i m happy with OSMAND but at some situations i do use maps.google.com at firefox. :victory:
Youtube : Viral Lite downloaded with apkleecher.com...much better than Youtube. :cyclops:
Search : DuckDuckGo available at FDROID. Google Now will be one huge feature u got to sacrifice
Any free apps can be downloaded from apkleecher.com.
Btw regarding the updates : FDROID apps can be updated easily but others, yeah i know thats pain in the ass but thats a sacrifice you got to make to get rid of play services.
After these things i got a fluid phone with extra 45mins of SOT on maguro..
THE DRAWBACKS : In the recently concluded GOOGLE I/O, google nailed the fragmentation issue by announcing that from now on all security patches will reach via Google play services which enables to secure even 2.3 devices.
However those updates will definitely added to the AOSP branch which our beloved DEVS will make use of
please comment if u have any ques and try getting rid of play services and have fun......
Thanks for sharing this info. I'm going to follow your instructions. I'd like to see a "new system" by replacing all the pieces

-background data updates
-push email on/off
-BT/Wi-Fi/NFC on/off
-brightness level/auto

Eg.

Nova homescreen weather/stock widgets auto update every 30 mins.
Auto app updates over data only, got unlimited plan so never use Wi-Fi.
Auto brightness on.
BT always on since it connects to car everyday streaming audio/calls for 30 mins.

Also, I've got a couple dedicated servers to my disposal. Can they be used to create my owncloud service?

honestly i dont play games at all in my gnex besides afaik Games dont depend upon google play services completely, they are just optional to store scores on cloud, i think games might work. Telegram is really fast and has no delay since it doesn't depend on Google cloud server. But on 1mobile there's a newer version of it. I guess that one drains more battery that the old one at fdroid. I really love it I think I'll tell my friends to migrate. But which version of it is better. It's kind of conflicting having fdroid and 1mobile at the same time

In terms of security overall? So updating one by one checking on apkleecher would be the only option? Because fdroid only detects some of the apps. My battery has improved though, so I think I might not go back to Google services maybe until I get a new phone with larger battery. And even then I'll give it a second thought

I am mostly trying to move to open source apps, also u can use the apps without updating as long as we want coz they will be stable and work well...nowadays most of the apps notify u when there is an update, spend a few mins in the weekend to update them...technically I felt 1mobile is just another Google play service coz they all work with Google analytics ads etc etc etc....choice is urs

I didn't know there were that many people who didn't like running gapps. I don't really have any issue using gapps and google play, but it's nice to know there are other options out there. Thanks for sharing this.
Is not that we don't like them. Is what they do to our battery what we don't like.
