Maybe this will help.

Yup I can say if u have any chance of getting your stuff back it'll be with the method linked above. I've used it several times and depending on the circumstances theres a significant chance of recovery

[Q] How do I do a complete back up of my phone before rooting?

On Mac OS X 10.7.4
I've found a lot on making backups with the clockworkmod and such once you're rooted, but what about before that? I want to back up everything and my S3 won't mount on my Mac using Android file transfer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Right, but should my phone get bricked or even if I don't root at all and my phone got stolen, I want to find a way to completely back up all my data.
I gave up trying to get my s3 to mount on my MBP and just used airdroid. There's also titanium backup.
What are you afraid of losing exactly?

Anything...if my phone gets stolen i would want to be able to just do a restore with as little time wasted as possible.
If you want to completely back up your phone, you need to root it.
The only backup you have now is the simple backup from Google - contacts, apps (not data).
If you mess up while trying to root, you're screwed. If you mess up after root and you've backed up, if you can reach recovery, then you can restore. Those are your options.
Just read the guides, rooting is pretty safe. Then use titanium backup.
I rooted immediately but I'm assuming you can just copy all the files onto your computer through usb. Not pretty but should work.

[Q] Any way to restore a backup of a non rooted HOX

Does anyone know of any way to restore a backup of a non-rooted HTC One X?
I had to send my cursed HOX off for it's third repair, so once again I'm back to an annoyingly factory clean phone. Before sending the phone off I backed up all external storage and used ADB to make a full backup.ab, also my phone is set to sync with Google.
On receiving my phone back, I get no option from Google Play to restore my previously installed apps and the backup.ab seems to be entirely useless, possibly due to a sense bug I've heard mentioned. It seems that I could potentially restore from the backup.ab using Titanium if I rooted but I really don't want to risk my warranty on a phone I've already had to send back three times.
Any help would be much appreciated...
Why is it useless? What's wrong with:
adb restore backups.ab
I try to restore with 'adb restore backup.ab' my phone asks me to confirm, it says backup restoring then about 2 hours later I get prompted to send a crash report to HTC. Nothing has changed and I get nothing in the way of even slightly useful output on either the PC or Android side to figure out what's going wrong.

[Q] Urgent help recovering my data...

Hi everyone,
I'm at a loss at the moment as I do not know which way to turn, any help would be greatly appreciated.
so the last 2 years have been pretty eventful for me. I had a number of close relatives pass away and various other important family events take place and all my pictures and videos surround them seem to have disappeared from my HTC One X.
I had the phone connected to a laptop and was in the process of backing up the entire collection when the phone got incredibly hot, froze and restarted on me, to my shock all my videos and pictures where gone once the phone booted back up. I have removed the battery and have not used the phone since, in fear that it may delete/write over any data structures, or remove any chance I have at recovering my files.
Now I am of course a newbie to the HTC one X when it comes to rooting etc but I have done this sorta thing with previous phones in the past so I can work through a guide/root/update if needed.
Having tried many of these generic "recover your data" type software they all seem to require USB Mass Storage Mode. from what I have found and and experienced I can not do this as my android version is 4.1.1 and the option was removed in an update. MTP connection type is how it connects to a PC ( i hope im making sense here as im not sure if im saying that right).
I've spent the last week trying to figure out a way to get the phone to work with mass storage mode but my understanding is a little sketchy.
Is there anyway to recover my data and if so what is the best course of action?
Should I root and upgrade to a custom firmware?
If i do this will this wipe the existing internal storage/ or perhaps remove any chance I have at recovery after the upgrade? I haven't used the phone since as ive read on several threads that the best chance of recovery is to ensure that very little data / no new data is written to the phones internal memory.
I've even considered paying professional data recovery services however they simply do not provide enough information as to what/how they do it and im scared that they may return the phone with no results and also wipe any chance I have at recovery.
any help at all would be greatly appreciated, as at this point i really don't know what else to do.
if someone has a tried and tested method or recovery service they have used please let me know. If it really is too difficult to attempt a recovery myself id be willing to pay for any assistance beyond that.
thanks for any assistance in advance.

If all you need to do to salvage your data is USB mount storage then I suggest flashing a custom recovery, CWM and TWRP both enable USB mount storage.

ok so I've used CWM a few years back and I have a rough idea of what to do (i can search around for a decent guide) but I just want to confirm that flashing a custom recovery will not force me to reformat or format the internal memory in its entirety before/during/after the installation itself?
Would this be the best way to recover data from the device as its not currently rooted or had any custom firmware flashed to it
ie: install CWM>enable mass storage mode>use generic software to scan the drive and attempt to recover
thank you

unlocking your bootloader will wipe all your data. I would try recovery software first, if your pc can see your phone I don't see why the software won't.

there are a number of reputable recovery software applications on the market, almost all of which require that you are using mass storage mode (when attempting to recover from a mobile device). I've used 14 different programs so far and none of them can recognize my HTC one x when its plugged into the PC.
my htc works fine and is showing up as "portable media device" in the windows browser however none of the programs ive tried can locate the storage with there respective disk/file browsers.

doesn't really like you have much of a choice now then. You should prepare yourself for the possibility that, because data is missing, the sdcard may be corrupted and not recoverable at all. having said that, I have recovered data from hard drives and sdcards that have been formatted multiple times, with minimal loss. I would wait till tomorrow night before you decide anything, give more people a chance to see the post through tomorrow

I think if i understand it correctly now if i root and install CWM recovery now it actually reformats/wipes the storage.

Ok. Currently I'm on the way home from work but I guess I will need aprox. 1 hour.
1. DO NOT install a custom ROM
2. You need to install CWR Recovery for this Action
3. Don't care if the device will boot or not - you need only CWR Recovery installed on it
4. Do not try to do stupid things like using public bull**** recovery crap Tools
It will take up to two hours and your data will be back. Ok. lets say most of them.
To do:
1. Unlock your device bootloader
2. Install CWM Recovery
3. Let me know when it's done
And most important - leave the device as it is. Do not restart or boot the device to much times

thanks for your help!
Im at work at the moment too so I will try to do this as soon as I get home.
just a quick question though, does unlocking the bootloader and installing CWM recovery format the storage? nogotaclue said unlocking the bootloader would wipe/reformat the memory again. (I am trying to avoid this as it could potentially write over the data im trying to recover)

Don't care about if the SDCard will be formated or not.
On the one Hand it seems you have already formated or lost the partion on it and on the other Hand there is no other way to get the data back.
I promise to you that this is OK even when the unlock procedure Format your SDCard This is not the first time that I recover some data. And I do this Job since more than 15 years.
It's up to you to decide.
Sorry I didn't mean to offend you. Just worried that's all. I was called away for work so I'm back this weekend. Will root and install the recovery as soon I can.
Thanks again for your help.

Then i have a question to you Mr T, what software is "best" or at least very good to use to recover lost/formatted data ?
As you seem to know much about that

Re: Recover deleted pictures and videos
It is very good that you did not use your phone after deletion of photos and videos so there will be no matter of overwriting. You said that you have tried many Recovery Tools but I think they might be free of cost. I have also tried so many free data recovery tools to recover my photos but all are of no use. Then my friend suggested me Remo recover Android tool after employing the tool I successfully recovered all my data from my HTC one.

[Q] Encryption and Nandroid Backup/Restore

Hey guys,
If I encrypt my M8, then do a full Nandroid backup to the SDcard, can this backup be restored to any device or is it device-specific?
Also, am I right in assuming that a backup of an encrypted handset can even be restored? If so, how is unencryption performed after the restore?
Just want to clarify as I'm unsure of 'best practice' when making a full backup.
I'd prefer to make encrypted backups and then store the SDcard safely, but if an encrypted backup is in fact device-specific, it almost seems counterproductive.
Anyone?
Just want to know an encrypted phone can be backed up and then restored before actually encrypting my M8!
I don't think you can make a backup if you encrypt your phone. Or even flash any files from recovery. The data will be encrypted and CWM can't access them AFAIK..at least not the HTC encryption.
And backups are not tied to the device as such.
You could make a nand backup with a tool that makes backups while you're booted into Android. Such as Online Nandroid Backup.
Thank you :good:
As mentioned in the initial post I'm using Nandroid Online Backup, so I kind of assumed that as the phone is effectively 'decrypted' whilst I'm booted into the Android, the Nandroid backup would be fully restorable.
But even if that is indeed the case, would the actual backup on the SDCard itself be encrypted data .. or unencrypted due to the decryption which is performed once booted into Android?
My ideal scenario is to have an encrypted M8 + an encrypted SDCard backup. But I assume there would be no way to restore an encrypted SDCard backup .. other than to the original handset/Device ID on which it was first created.
Unless I'm missing something?

The backup would be unencrypted if you save it to the SD card. Unless you encrypt the SD card also, which is done separately. Not sure how that would work out though..never tried it You might wanna check the support for the Online Nandroid tool for that info.
As for the restoring backup to devices, since the backup is unencrypted and it's not tied to any device, it would be possible to restore it to other phones or just simply unpack it.
Thanks WarCow :good:
I guess the safest thing is to encrypt, reboot/decrypt, then backup and then bury my SDCard somewhere safe!

Except that decryption will require factory resetting your phone It's such a hassle. Also keep in mind that encryption will slow the phone down a bit compared to being unencrypted.

Yes, I have noticed the difference: my personal phone is unencrypted and my work phone is encrypted. Both are M8s and there is a noticeable bootup lag. Performance wise, the difference is minimal and therefore tolerable.
But sadly I don't have a choice with the work phone.
Really just wanted to make sure that any encrypted device can be backup and subsequently restored. Now I'm confident it can, I have no trouble with resetting.
I can upgrade AndroidHD from 10.1 to 10.2 while I'm at it! :victory:

HELP! Factory reset while rebooting into recovery!

Hey guys,
I really need help. I was about to update my brother op3 from 3.2.4 to 3.2.8. When I was done I wanted to continue to flash to 4.0 but when I use the advanced reboot to boot into recovery it suddenly said "factory reset"!!!! Everything is gone even from the storage! I cant even backup from the backup file from twrp because it is gone! Can anyone please help me out? There are software to recovery this but I have to pay for all of them and they are not cheap!
Thank you in advance!
After a factory reset, even paid recovery tools aren't able to fully restore your data to their original state. At best, you'll get back a majority of the individual files you had on your phone prior to the wipe. The more you use the phone after wiping it, the more the old data is overwritten. At this point, I would just make the best out of this unfortunate event and clean flash whatever OS you were trying to update to. At least the phone will be de-cluttered at this point. You may even notice that the phone feels a little faster afterwards, and may even improve your battery life slightly.
If you had something really important on your phone that wasn't backed up, data recovery tools may be able to restore it, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Additionally, TWRP backups do not backup media files such as music, photos, personal documents, etc. Even if you were able to find a nandroid backup, you would only get back your OS, apps, and app data. Most of this can be restored by just downloading everything again.
In the future, I would recommend saving nandroid backups directly to a USB flash drive through USB OTG. Music and photos can also be backed up to the cloud through various free or paid services (Google Photos for example).

Chance to recover your files are verry slim. Use the TWRP provided by Bluspark, it's on his main thread, stock twrp seems to have many issues.
