Hey guys,
I was having trouble with a previous ROM that I was using (Paranoid Android 4.2) after several months I decided to reflash...
With a pretty full internal SD so I decided to delete some of my old files etc. I picked a new ROM (JediMindTricks 4.2), updated my CWM/Rom Manager, wiped with SuperWipe, Installed the rom, and now I am stuck in a real jam....
Of course I am boot looping and as a result of that I am trying to revert to a backup, however CWM freezes almost instantly when trying to do anything. Whether it's wiping, reinstalling, or restoring a back-up it freezes. So with a similar previous issue I decided at this point I need to revert to stock ICS using ODIN. Inside ODIN (which I have never had any issues with) when I put the phone in download mode ODIN never recognizes it and will not allow me to revert to stock...
At this point I seem to be out of options.... What do you guys think?

Did you try to boot in recovery and install CWM from internal SD? Wipe data / factory reset and wipe cache in recovery mode... I'm not an expert but it won't hurt to try!

Unfortunately it is completely unresponsive when attempting to install any version of CWM.zip that I try to install in recovery.

Yesterday I had trouble with a bad upgrade through Kies and my cell kept telling me to plug it with Kies and do an emergency recovery. Nothing worked as the emergency recover didn't work with my cellphone and I wasn't able to boot in recovery nor download mode. I had to plug it in another computer and re-ODIN an earlier version of my stock rom... Not sure if it will helps you...
Plug in your phone to your computer, open kies, select "emergency firmware recovery", enter serial number from phone (write down beforehand) then cross your fingers and hope for the best. Good luck.
Also, be careful with those wiping scripts.

After literally wrestling with this for the last 7 hours ODIN has finally recognized it...
You DONT super wipe with the latest cmw recoveries. Superwipe was made for the early 5.0.x.x version, it breaks the new recoveries.

Good evening,
before I start:
HTC Desire HD
Orange Branded
Clockwordmod Recovery
I was out and about today when I recieved a nice message telling me there was a system update to download and install. I got within WiFi signal and downloaded it. when I tried to run it, it kept hanging on the ClockwordMod (CWM) Recovery page. First it told me that it couldn't mount the SD card where the update was stored. So I mounted the SD card through CWM and tried again. This time it told me that it couldn't be verified. So I turned that off too. Then it told me something else didn't work so I disabled that (sorry, I can't remember but it begins with 'A'). I tried a final time to install the update but it wouldn't work still.
Then the phone wouldn't load. It just hung on the HTC white screen for about ten mins with no movement.
I removed the battery, reloaded by pressing Vol Down + On. I have tried every menu item but the loader tells me that an image (beginning with P****.zip) is missing. It lets me load the clockworkmod recovery page so I have tried to restore a backup that I made about a week ago. It restored it, (or so it said) but when I then told it to reload it still hangs on the HTC white screen.
It's now been hanging for ten mins and I'm just leaving it.
Does it just need to be left for a long time to reload from the HTC white screen?
If it does not reload, how can I get it to?
Many thanks for your impending help!
You havent bricked your phone, a bricked phone wont power on! For future reference, remember, you cannot flash an ota update with a custom recovery installed. As you have found out it messes your device up. Ok you have 2 options.
1. Try a full wipe from the mounts and storage menu. Then try to restore your backup.
2. Flash a custom rom from recovery.

I really thought restoring my backup would have done it.
I now need to try a custom rom.

Would you happen to know where I can get the Orange ACE Rom from?
I've tried to install the Cyanogen Mod but that has got me no further.
I downloaded the most uptodate build of Cyanogen Mod (7) and copied it to my SD Card.
Through ClockworkMod Recovery I installed Cyanogen Mod and it told me that it had been successful. I restarted the phone and it got past the HTC white screen.....
I was very excited until it is not sat here on the Cyanogen Mod screen which just loads over and over again repeatedly.
Any other ideas please? I suspect I need the Orange ACE Stock Rom....is it available?
did you wipe your phone before trying to flash the new roms as AndroHero suggested?
if not try that first (you can do it via clockwork recovery or via easy full wipe from mero01 -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868720)

yes, the only thing I didn't wipe was the SD card because that's where the rom / backup is stored. Do i need to completely wipe that then put the backup back on there?
as far as i know, it shouldn't be necessary. but i'm not really sure, sorry.
you could try formatting your sd card, wouldn't hurt, but maybe it would be better to wait for someone with more knowledge about android than me.

Thanks for your help so far. I am trying everything. If I could find the actual Orange Stock Rom (Ace) then I might get somewhere. I don't want to install a custom rom if not necessary.
EDIT: I have found an Orange Stock Rom (RUU). How do i install it?
I can only get to the bootloader screen so do I plug the USB cable in at this point and run the RUU from the PC once the drivers have installed? Do I put the RUU on the SD card and somehow run it from there?
i think this is the newest stock rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969374&highlight=orange+rom
but as AndroHero already mentioned, i think you can't flash stock RUUs with cwm recovery.
p.s. did you give easy wipe from the link from my previous post a try ?

I must admit that i've not yet tried the Easy Wipe. At the moment I am downloading an older stock Rom (the one that was on there before this happened) and am following some other instructions to extract the PD98IMG.ZIP which appears to be missing.
I DID go through CWM to competely wipe everything with the exception of the SD card and i managed to almost get CyanogenMod working....it would work for about 20seconds before reloading again....very strange. It has given me hope though. I tried wiping everything before doing the restore of my original backup but still nothing.
the download is taking ages so I'll give easy wipe a go.....wait....
SOLVED
thank you for all who helped.
I solved this problem by downloading an older Orange Stock Rom from the link above. After that, I followed instructions in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890 and reinstalled the rom.zip that it mentions. Sure enough, I am back to where I started about 3 weeks ago but because everything was backed up to the cloud I really don't mind at all. Sure, I have to root it with VISIONary again to remove all the apps that Orange have stuffed in but I can cope with that.
In fact, the worst thing is that I completed Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons and now i have no proof!!
Thanks again all.
glad that you could finally solved it!
i, too just lost all my angry birds saves because i just downgraded so that i could root my dhd
Prior to receiving my GS2 from T-Mobile I did research on how to Root, Flash ROMs, you know, all the cool things Android phones can do, and I mean A LOT of research. When I finally did recieve my phone the first thing I did was root it, which worked flawlessly - at which point I thought "Hey, this isn't so hard I won't have any problems at all!" OH BOY WAS I WRONG.
Here's where everything went wrong: The first ROM I thought I'd install was AOKP Milestone and then I'd try CM10, so I put both .Zip files into my SD card. I backed up to Titanium Backup and to my External SD card through Clockwork mod then I installed AOKP Milestone and made it to the home screen with some force close messages. It was running, but didn't look very stable to me and the whole "Swagger" thing turned me off to it. I went back to Clockwork Mod and the website that I got CM10 from also told me to run DarkSide Wipe before installing the ROM so I did just that. Ran Darkside, installed CM10, then installed Gapps. I then rebooted my phone and CM10 started to load up, but after 10 minutes of just the splash screen I assumed it was stuck in a bootloop. I then restored the backup I made before installing Milestone, but I remember there being an error and it not being successful. It was at this point that Clockwork Mod started being buggy. Starting to panic, I tried a factory reset through CWM. It formatted data no problem, but it would hang at "formatting /cache" until I turned off the phone. So I panicked some more and formatted system, emmc, data. (Not a smart idea, I know.) but it would hang when I tried formatting the cache again. And its been stuck in a bootloop ever since.
I read somewhere that you could use Odin to revert your phone to make it completely stock by flashing a kernel. I thought my prayers were answered! I was finally going to just start over and forget this ever happened! No. My computer won't even recognize my phone is plugged into it. (Yes, I have all drivers up to date. Yes, I am using Samsung Micro USB, and Yes, I have Keis installed.) Since my computer won't recognize my Phone, Odin won't.
* I can access Clockwork mod, and Download mode, but my computer won't recognize my phone when plugged in.*
I know it's a lot to read but I have tried so many things I'm just so discouraged about this whole thing. I know I'm a noob so please explain your answers like I'm 5. I don't understand most Android modding slang.
Thank you.

If you have an external sd card, load a rom on to it from your computer and then get your phone into recovery mode and choose to install from external sd card. See if that works. Also sometimes a cache wipe can take a while. Also don't panic and start doing things you know nothing about. I would recommend and ice based rom then figure how to get twrp recovery then move on to cm10. . If you can get past this, I can help you. Pm me

EDIT: The funny thing is, when my phone is in CWM my computer recognizes it and I can mount USB storage, but won't recognize it while in download mode. Weird.
don't use superwipe with cwm 6+. it will break your recovery and cause a bootloop.
also it seems that a lot of people have problems with cwm 6.0.1.9 and it seems like it doesn't wipe properly so i would recommend latest twrp or sk8terwitskil's cwm. i think that's what happened with aokp and why you were having so much fcs.

Battery pull didn't work either. :/
UPDATE: I've tried installing 3 different ICS ROMs from the external SD via CWM but they all seem to freeze 3/4 through the install. After about 5 mins of being frozen the phone reboots and the bootloop just comes back. Once again I have nowhere to go. I'm lost.
If anyone has more suggestions, please share!
i don't know where i read it but i just remember now that someone said kies and odin are incompatible. so maybe that's why odin couldn't detect your phone? kies might have been running in the bg.
so i would uninstall kies and driver. restart comp. then download and install just the driver from samsung website. then put the phone into download mode and connect to pc. see if that will help.
if not, i don't know lol. usually i would suggest flashing to twrp but i don't know how well that's gonna go over a broken recovery.
I would suggest flashing TWRP recovery 2.3.3 and try and flash a ROM again after....CWM has gone downhill in my opinion.
Here is the TWRP thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768742
Or download GooManager app and install that way
And do not use any cache wipe scripts with this.

You need to have computer install odin driver while you're in download mode before odin works. Try this wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data/factory reset, format system, format cache and format system. Then flash new rom in recovery.

RESOLVED!
Funny thing is, I just plugged in my phone to a computer running Windows 7 and Odin recognized it! I guess my XP at home doesn't like phones. From there I flashed a stock kernel and VIOLA! Phone is out of the box new! Now I'm very weary about installing a ROM again.. I don't want to go through that ever again. Maybe i'll do some more research before I molest the software's insides.
Thank you everyone for your contributions!
Try recovery from sk8erwitskil, it's the only one that seems to work w/ my Hercules. I had similar problems to what you were experiencing and it's the only recovery that worked for some reason. I am on a GNex now so take that for what it's worth. I'll pull out the Herc. tonight when I get home to update to the CM10 latest nightly, it's been a while.
Hi i've come here many times before for any hiccups that came up for me with my phone but this time I believe I need help. I'll start it off with me earlier this week I was running CyanogenMod 10.1 and felt like I wanted to change it up leading me to isntall synergy onto my S3 (completed two nights ago). Today I decided it just wasnt doing it for me. Picked a new ROM ( Paranoid ).
This is where the problem comes in, I started the usual to flash a new ROM, put it into recovery and then started the factory/data reset. it froze waited half an hour for it to complete but it did'nt. Rebooted it into recovery as now I cant boot back into the software anyways. tried the same thing but wiped the cache and dalvik cache first. same thing happened froze on the factory reset. At this time I decided to reset it completley and get rid of the root, flashing the stock firmware. Odin also froze everytime, I cant even reinstall the stock firmware after failing everytime around the Nand area. I found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030) with I think a similar problem im really not sure as I cant do anything but the thing is, is that its for Verizon Galaxy S3 ( im on Rogers Canada). I'm sure I can fix this somehow as I can put it into download mode still but any help from the community would be greatly appreciated.
How far does Odin get during the stock ROM flash, before it freezes up on you?
I would try to Odin a stock recovery. Not the ROM & everything, just the recovery. Then go into the stock recovery and wipe everything.
Then Odin the stock ROM. Maybe try an ICS one if you were failing on the JB one.

It says Nand write start, and then complete (write) operation failed. On the phone in download mode it says Secure check Fail : aboot . CMW works for me still ? is that what you mean ? if so the data/factory reset freezes. I do have a RecoveryGalaxyS3USCanada.tar file in my Root folder, if I should flash that.... but its been so long I forget what its for. Thank you for the feedback ive been searching all day and wasnt able to find anything useful so far. Right now im downloading older stock firmwares to attempt to flash them, hopefully they pan out.
The utility in this thread offers an option to flash the stock recovery. I'd try it out and see what happens!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
Flash stock recovery and then boot to the stock recovery and restore to defaults. Then flash a stock ROM.
Stock recovery = Samsung recovery, not TWRP or Clockwork.
I had 2 soft bricks with cm this week. Had to Odin back to rooted stock for one. The other back to rooted stock and had to factory reset with Samsun 3e recovery before the phone would boot.

Thank you so much! I doubted it at first just because of the other roms and stock ones also never worked but this one has it up and running smoothy. I want to play it safe just so I dont screw up again so I'm gonna ask you guys one more thing.. Would it be safe to try and flash the Paranoid ROM now? ( I dont believe it was the problem earlier since I never actually got to installing it). The problem was something around the lines of not being able to write things onto the device. ex Data/Factory reset freezing everytime on CMW, while Odin also failed everytime it made to the step of flashing/writing in the stock ROM.
Thanks everyone, your're all very helpful !
If it were me, I'd Odin a stock/rooted JellyBean ROM first. Just to get to get all the correct files & structure on there. THEN I would flash whatever you want.
First, sorrt to speak french, but thatnll be more easy for me to tell it.
A partir du moment ou tu peux passer en mode download, tout va bien ^_^
Il m'est deja arrive sur mon teos de corrompre ma partition systeme et de repartir comme si de rien n'etait avec un flash.

i agree with coming from stock firmware when flashing. i would also make sure my cwm was up-to-date while i was at it. i would also boot into recovery and make a nandroid now so you'll have one. with that being said, here ya go:

step 1: take the time to backup your imei if you havent already
step 2: this is stock with root already injected
step 3: if you dont have rom manager, download it and update your recovery if you're not running 6.0.2.3 or higher
step 4 & 5 are self explanatory

The only thing so far (that I have noticed) is that the data/factory reset still does not work, I'm going to continue like you said earlier and flash stock recovery and my own stock firmware for Rogers now that I have turned debugging mode on. my cmw currently is 6.+ and my previous Nandroid backups would also get stuck when I tried to restore to them, I'm assuming that since I still can't factory reset that I wont be able to restore back to them but I will see. Should I make another nandroid even when its still in a semi-messed up state ?
Right now I seriously just want to get rid of the stupid data reset problem.

where are you saying the data/factory reset isnt working? cwm or in android settings?
i would download rom manager and update cwm to latest (6.0.3.0), boot into cwm recovery and try making a nandroid.
and i dont think you're as messed up as you think you are right now. you're rooted, with stock firmware and a custom recovery.
when i was ready, i would update recovery, in recovery make a backup, (still in recovery) wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik, flash rom

boot into cwm and flash gapps again. flash twice to be sure. reboot. lemme know
I believe everything is working perfectly now, installed Rom manager from the web and updated cmw. Once more tried to data wipe from cmw and it froze again this time crashing by itself, I then went back into it went and formatted my data and then tried the wipe data, this time it worked for me and I proceeded to wipe the cach and dalvik, installed paranoid and everthing is working fine, ill post an update if i notice anything else happens but so far it looks perfect. Thank you so aton, I appreciate it guys especially you "Beer". Now I can relax on my birthday and stop tinkering around on my phone haha.
( Not sure why Gapps wer'nt working earlie,r but i'm done )
Same problem here
The same thing happened to me while trying to Odin to ATT stock rom. Flash stopped half way and Odin showed failed. Tried to reboot into download mode to repeat procedure and would not go into download mode. Phone will reboot but into android recovery mode. When I try to run an update from sd card I get a "file verification error" and the process aborts. I'm going to try this process to see if I have any better results.
Hello. First post because I'm usually pretty good at finding solutions to my problems just searching. I can't find the solution to my current issue and I hope you fine folks can give me some advice.
Issue arose while clean flashing my d2att to the most recent Task650 AOKP build using the latest TWRP. Did my nandroid to internal sd like usual, factory reset, and format system. Done this 100 times with no issues. This time, TWRP crashed while formatting system and phone vibrates, reboots, hangs on the new kernel splash screen for Task650s Rom. Pull the battery, replace, then boot recovery with the volume home power method. TWRP splash screen shows, screen goes black, vibrates twice, then reboots back into previously mentioned kernel splash and hangs.
So I can't boot recovery and I can't boot my phone. I enter download mode and try to Odin the most recent twrp tar. Same. I try a previous twrp tar. Same.
I think I can use a rooted stock image to get back up and running, but I don't want to lose the contents of my internal sd.
How can I fix this with minimal data loss? Thanks for the help.

Ugh.
AFAIK, you're stuck and will have to Odin back to stock JB just to get running properly again.
Maybe try to Odin stock recovery? I'm pretty sure it's out there somewhere to flash. Then use it to wipe cache/dalvik and then Odin TWRP again. Or try to Odin CWM?
You can use ADB to copy all the files from your phone over to your computer so you don't lose anything. The commands to do this are out there somewhere. I don't know them off the top of my head.

Thanks for the feedback CZ. I didn't want to mess around with ADB so I just used Odin to flash rooted stock and expected to lose some data. Much to my surprise, once the phone was back up and running, my data was still on the internal SD. So everything is good now and I shall go back to lurking!

Odin won't delete /data only a factory reset in stock recovery will
So i reset my GS3 yesterday. I am running a stock rooted phone.. My phone has always been fine but after a reset through the phone the phone never loaded back up. It was stuck on the samsung screen. I tried pulling the battery out a few times. I went into my CWM recovery and tried wiping both caches with no luck. I tried restoring the phone and that didn't work. I finally tried wiping all data and now the phone won't boot at all. It says phone can not boot and will go into odin mode. Odin will recognize my phone though. What should i do? Should I try to restore my phone to factory through odin? I can't find the stock sprint version tar file. I could only find the verizon one. Can someone help me and tell me what is the best step for me? I can get into CWM but the phone won't boot.

If you can get into recovery mode, you can just restore a nandroid backup (if you have one made). If you don't have one, you can wipe /system, /data, and the caches and reflash your Rom (provided you have it saved on your SD card).
If none of the above work, download mode is your best friend.
You can get into Download (Odin) Mode. That's a good thing. Sextape has the md4 TAR file for your over in their thread (warning, outside link). They have the stock unrooted as well as stock rooted file. Since you have already wiped your data, you might as well flash the "Restore" version:
"Restore" Versions - Wipes your user data
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Stock_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]

If you know how to use Odin, you can just downlaod the TAR file, but I recommend using their auto-extractor (the exe file), since it's well tested and there's less chance of user error.
All that being said, I'm curious to how your phone became "softbricked." Did you install any apps or mods recently that could've caused it? Custom Kernel?
It sounds like you eventually ended up wiping /system, which would be why you can't boot up now. I haven't heard of it automatically going into download mode because of that, but I haven't tested it on my phone, either.
try rwilco 12's android file repository. he has everything you will need

You can also take the sd card out plug into a computer download a rom zip put it on the sd card pop it back into the phone and flash through the custom recovery which should be there.

Thanks for the help everyone. I guess I didn't soft brick the phone I just wiped it and there was no rom on it.
