T999V VLDLL1 Bootloader + Modem (Flashable .zip) - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

UPDATED 2013-06-13: Released v3 with an improved updater script. If you've already installed VLDLL1 firmware update, there's no need to re-flash this.
This is for Canadian SGH-T999V devices. For SGH-T999 UVDMD5 firmware, please see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282603
I've made a flashable .zip to update the T999V to VLDLL1 bootloader, resources and power manager, etc. It's based on my T999 UVDMD5 updater except it has the firmware blobs from the official T999V VLDLL1 Odin download and updated the SHA1 sums in the script. This does NOT include modem firmware as there are several different VLDLL1 modems for T999V. You will have to update that yourself -- please see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987
This is the latest firmware update for Canadian Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999V) that flashes the VLDLL1 radio and bootloader with a convenient update.zip. Flashing it on anything other than the Canadian SGH-T999V is strongly not advisable. It will likely brick your phone. It CANNOT be used on the US SGH-T999. Do NOT ever mix up Canadian and US firmwares. Doing so will result in a hard brick.
@jason27131 (and, since, many others) has successfuly guinea pigged this on a T999V!
T999V VLDLL1 Bootloader / FW Update (w/o Modem): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/173554095/T999 Devel/T999V_VLDLL1_noradio_v3.zip (md5: 79f976220f86ce457803c0baee5e1fd2)
What are these firmware files?
rpm.mbn - Resources and Power Manager
sbl2.mbn - Part of Secondary Bootloader
sbl3.mbn - Part of Secondary Bootloader
aboot.mbn - AP Bootloader
tz.mbn - Trust Zone
NON-HLOS.bin - Modem -- This is not flashed in the VLDLL1 updater as the VLDLL1 firmware is used by multiple providers with different modems.
Why do I want this?
If your phone has old enough firmware, newer CM10.1 builds will no longer install on it. It is unknown if updating to VLDLL1 from earlier supported versions has any noticeable positive effects. No known negative effects have been reported and the Odin method ends up upgrading all this stuff anyway.
Instructions:
(1) Put this .zip file on the root of your sdcard.
(2) Reboot to recovery
(3) Choose .zip file from sdcard and select this file and flash it.
(4) Reboot and you're done. I didn't find any wiping of any kind necessary. If you plan to flash anything else, at least reboot recovery first to pick up the bootloader change.
Many thanks to whomever put together the original update.zip and to Khaytsus and invisiblek for pointing me in the right direction. Thanks to GenericAsianGuy for helping with the T999V script -- getting me the PIT file and firmware blobs. Thanks to jason27131 for being the first brave person to test this! Also many thanks to all who've tested it and provided feedback. There is no greater enjoyment than in helping people.
I've also hacked together a firmware backup script that works for both T999 and T999V: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283935
DISCLAIMER: I do not take any credit for this stuff, I just put it together. I am not liable for your device if you break it, etc etc.

*please ignore*

Did you try it? Curious about your results

In case anyone with the VLDLL1 firmware on their phone wants to check my work, they can run the backup script and run sha1sum on the generated files, they should match up:

Unfortunately I don't have a T999V so I can't guinea pig this myself or else I would.

Awesome! Thank you for testing it, good sir!

Does that mean I can flash the latest tmobile 4.1.2 firmware update and then flash this to make it work on my t999V (Videotron)?
That would be nice since Videotron is taking forever to release the 4.1.2 firmware update.

thanks for making this available to us canadians eh'. I'm lucky enough that my brand new phone is already updated

Well it's working on my Videotron phone here. No problem whatsoever.
Thanks alot

NOOO DO NOT FLASH THE TMO FW UPDATE!!!
Flash this for ALL CANADIAN MODELS. THE 4.1.2 is only for TMO MODELS.
If you want an expensive paper weight, just ask Polar.
Please people, if it says it it's compatible for Canadian models or Videotron or T999 V (that's with a "V" after the SGH-T999), by all means, try and flash it.
If IT DOES NOT, and the OP states it is of/for T-Mobile USA, or T999 (without the V), then why would you want to flash that to your Videotron S3????????????
Common Sense people.

Oh I see! The firmware includes everything already for the T999V. I could swear it was only the modem and bootloader.
I will try it and report back.

Specifically you don't want the US bootloader or modem on the Canadian device as it ends up in a hard brick, or vice versa. I've made an update.zip each for SGH-T999 and SGH-T999V that provides the latest bootloader and modem firmware. This thread is for the T999V and the other thread (linked to in the OP) is for T999.
If you flash the entire 600-700MB image from TMO or Videotron or whomever via Odin, it flashes the modem, bootloader stuff, boot (kernel), system, recovery, etc.

Thank you for making separate firmware threads for the T999 and T999V.
It should definitely avoid much more the confusion and raise more clarity on this matter.

Since the TMO bootloader version is newer, couldn't we simply flash their version without flashing the modem? Like only aboot, sbl2-3, tz and rpm?

Flashing other device roms

So a friend of mine told me i could flash roms from other carriers is this true? He has the gs3 from t mobile but i don't want to flash a rom from t mobile if it could possibly brick or cause problems.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
He's wrong. Unless a ROM is ported, it runs a risk of being incompatible and could potentially brick your phone. Even then, a ported ROM may come with certain bugs &/or stability issues.
This is especially true for ROMS intended for the International GS3.
ROM - OdexedBlue
Baseband - LJ7
Kernel - Stock LI3

.Not true. May come with bugs but flashing roms for another US variant of the S3 is safe just make sure there are no modems in it. As long as its for a US Gs3 than its safe. Open the zip and if all you see is META-INF,system and boot.img you will be fine flashing it. Bugs can be expected tho and your screen orientation in landscape mode will probably be flipped. The part about the intl version is true tho. Dont flash those.

So it will be ok to flash a ROM for a GSM phone in a CDMA phone?
Like Tmo or ATT on Sprint?

Here is a good example: there is a note 2 ROM that is said to be usable across all carriers posted in the dev section. However many users see a lot of bugs with flashing it (signal drops is a big one). Phone works, just not as expected or usefuly.

Not a good example as the note 2 has many differences and is alot harder to port(hence the instability). Theres alot to change like screen size, a different processor etc. This will at least run and data will probably work but its not guaranteed. It will not brick you though.

That's good to know. I knew about the baseband part already, but got the rest of my information from reading the sticky thread in Android Development about how not to brick your phone. I've flashed a tmo kernel (Morfic's Trinity) and experienced excellent results - right up until I tried taking ng a picture and discovered that the auto rotate was reversed and everything was upside down in landscape.
ROM - OdexedBlue
Baseband - LJ7
Kernel - Stock LI3

So if the auto rotation is backwards is there a way to fix that? Or is it something you would just have to deal with? I like some of the t mobile roms he uses but if its buggy i probably won't even bother. How can you tell if it is an international rom or us?

If there is a modem in the zip woukd it be safe to just remove it and flash a sprint modem after the initial rom flash or transfer a sprint modem into the zip file prior to a flash? Where would the "META INF" file be located to verify the flash would work?

META-INF is a folder at the base of the zip. If there is a modem you can remove it and replace with a sprint one to make it easier. You could also remove it but that might require a edit to the updater-script and that can be a pain in the ass if ur not real familiar with the process. If you choose to remove it then flashing another is not needed since itll be untouched. but as said probably easiest to just replace. I recommend 7zip if u need to do that

Telus Root? Custom ROM?

So Im looking into this rooting and custom firmware/ROM deal, and came across a couple questions id like answered if possible.
I'm on Telus, in Canada, and my baseband on my GS3 is I747MVLDLK4. Every thread i see about custom roms and rooting refers to a different baseband, and my question is, what baseband ROMs will work with mine? Or is it even safe to flash this phone with a custom ROM at all?
Ive seen different opinions in other threads and everything seems to conflict, so i need a definite answer as I'd love to get into this whole community and start doing awesome things with my S3, but i don't want to go through a period of not being able to use my phone because i flashed the wrong firmware.
THanks

Don't confuse baseband with a operating system update. There isn't a need to update the baseband. It's just if you are having reception issues.

All good and helpful points but I will clarify further just so nothing gets misunderstood.
Baseband = modem. OP needs to flash only Telus modems and not ATT ones. Specifically only use the I747M modems. If you flash the wrong modem you may screw up your device. Tread carefully here.
When KorGuy talks about flashing anything on these boards he is referring to ROMs only. ROMs almost never include a modem in the package so there is no need to worry.
Check out the threads by Tony Stark for good answers.
^ I hope all that makes sense.

I9505 FW on M919

I am seriously thinking of getting a M919 but I really hate the slow fw update from carrier.
Does anyone know if I9505 FW will work on M919?
Since the hardware is basically the same, I am thinking if I can just extract the system.img from I9505 and wrap it into the M919 FW. Thanks.
I'm wondering this as well, assuming that the modem and is not flashed.

Exactly. Don't flash the modem or you will end up with a baseband unknown/IMEI = 0.

IIRC Steve Kondik(Cyanogen)'s current personal phone is a M919 (jfltetmo), so there should be a LOT of interesting ROMs coming out shortly.

If you're only interested in official OTAs from Tmo, they will obviously take a while to trickle out.

I am interested in official international ROM but not the official carrier ROM as the international ROM always gets the most updates. So I am looking for a easy port of I9505 FW to M919 since most of the hardware of both devices are the same.

depends on how you're trying to go about this. are you trying to build an actual ROM for recovery or TAR for Odin? i'm assuming you're trying to make a ROM. you need just the system.img from that. then pull our cache.img for the csc stuff so you have a signal, etc. then pick a boot.img either from the i9505 FW or from the T-Mob FW. just remember to also grab the respective modules. this is all i've needed to build a full working ROM.

NON-HLOS is another modem file. i believe modem.bin is for standard GSM. NON-HLOS.bin i believe is for LTE. regardless, don't grab either of them from the i9505 FW as they are def modem (Baseband) parts. not sure what tz.mbn is nor aboot.mbn but you don't need them. again you just specifically need system.img components from i9505. you could essentially just pull that and use everything else from T-Mob FW and it will work.

Cool but my point is that all quadcore S4 are the same hardware not the octa cored.. You know samsung updates their international ship first ad there here we have to wait for the carrier.
in this case we dont no more because we can just grab an i9505 rom from their leak updates.
So this phone is really a worldwide phone same hardware. not the octa cored.
People have been saying that this phone is not really that much of an upgrade from the S3 in this case I think it is. It doesnt matter if tmobile takes a while on releasing the newest update you can still get it from any other quadcored phone thats have it..

I get where you're coming from. I've been flashing the different variants of ROMs since I got the phone. It is definitely beneficial to have so many phones with the same hardware in the development aspect.

Updating Radio/Modem

Hello guys, sorry if this is a noob question for you Sammy guys (I'm more used to Nexus devices), but I was wondering if it is possible to update the baseband version on this device? More specifically, I was wondering if I could update to an international radio/modem? If not, does anyone know where to find the latest radios for each device. I tried searching but only could come up with an older thread for the version I already have (MDL). On my Nexus One and HTC One S we could flash any baseband we wanted, international or carrier release. Thanks!

No.
Do not flash any radio other than the ones made for your device. At best it won't boot. At worst it won't let you Odin back to the correct radio and it will never boot.

Sucks we have to wait for T-Mobile to finally release an update. I knew I should have just went for the i9505 international variant lol. Never again buy from a carrier! Thanks tho, saved me some fun time tooling around in Odin and losing my files.

Yeah but a new modem update by itself will probably never be a super improvement. So you probably aren't missing out on much.
Its not like an updated modem will let you talk to the Moon or something.
Sent from your phone. You should be more careful where you leave that thing.

LOL. what he's trying to do (my guess) is to use the i9505 4.3 roms. Unfortunately you will LOSE data connection (with the screen off) without the newer radios.
No option unfortunately but wait.

Spot on. Apparently, T-Mo is supposed to release their 4.3 update early to mid November (consult General Section for source). Then and only then would we be able to use a 4.3 TW ROM without cell network wonking out like a drunk. Hopefully T-Mobile could be at least 1/3rd useful this time and actually push out an update for once.. (you can feel my hatred towards carriers...... =.=).
EDIT: SOURCE THREAD, towards the last few pages starts the talk of the rumored T-Mo Nov. release.

Yes... Scheduled for 11/18. And it wouldn't be coming either if they weren't forced to by Samsung. They've got lots of watches to sell!!!

There is no M919 Tmobile 4.3 dump.
That's the problem, the only dump and the flashable zipfile rom
available as of yet is for the international versions of the S4's.
Flashing an international version of the 4.3 rom into our M919
phones even if it worked properly we would be losing wifi calling
and most like the LTE feature plus who knows what else.
You are wrong there is a t mobile4.3 dump for very long posted in general section : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2478553

We CAN run the TW 4.3 ROMs and have full LTE as normal (except for Wi-Fi calling b/c that's a T-Mo specific feature), the only issue is that data randomly cuts in and out. I don't understand how I could run AOSP 4.3 with no issues but 4.3 TW gives problems...
The thing is, only us T-Mo users have data issues, not the international or any other carrier. So it MUST be the radio version that is the cause of the problems, which is why we must wait for T-Mo to finally release an update...
Has anyone dare to flash international MJ5, JM6 modem? I mean our bootloader is unlock right? If it don't work can we just flash back our old modem? Just a thought.

Not a full dump. Only partial dump as the OP of that thread didn't want to root for fear of triggering Knox, and he had to return the device to tmobile.

[Q] Roms for T999L T-Mobile

Im new to this part of XDA, I just recently purchased a Galaxy S3 T999L.
Purchasing this phone, I had no idea there was a non LTE Model which leads me in a bit of confusion when looking for a custom Rom
Im no rookie when it comes to flashing. If you look Below in my sig you can see the devices I currently have and have flashed different roms many times in the past. My question is what ROMs will work with my T999L? Ive looked and to my confusion have seen more for the T999 than anything since its been around much longer.. I've been looking and the forum here is a bit fragmented and its hard to see which ROM will go to which device. Please forgive me for my ignorance, Im just trying to play catch up, and perhaps contribute in the future in some way.
Edit: Im more familiar with flashing Tablets than phones, I dont have much experience with flashing radios and other phone related stuff...Is there a Difference with T999 and T999L other than the Radio?
edit 2: No comments? I guess either i said the wrong thing, or I posted in the wrong forum..
Thank you in advance
The t-999 ROMs will work with your t-999l, except the 4.3 touchwiz ROMs for the moment. 4.3 aosp/cm/aokp is fine.. There's really not much difference between the two, except the t-999l was updated to support lte.. Do not flash a t-999 modem to your t-999l, it won't brick but it won't pick up service at all. I suggest looking at the t-999l and t-999n q&a thread for further info

I did just that.... And u didn't have to be rude about it..
Thanks for your input
Don't mean to hi-jack this thread but it kind of pertains the the question. I have the T999L as well. I've read Doc's informational thread about the T999L and T999N.
In terms of this part:
"ONLY flash T999L firmware to a T999L and T999N firmware to a T999N!!!!
If it does not match your model EXACTLY, it will almost certainly brick your device!!!"
I keep reading I can safely flash T999 roms, kernels, etc. But it's the firmware process that confuses me. Should I only stick to 4.1.2 roms (can I even flash Jamison's 4.1.1 rom for example), or can I flash a 4.3 TW rom in the future, assuming the leaked builds get LTE support when the official update comes out?
Thanks in advance.

If that's true then how come the T999L wasn't updated to 4.3 alongside the T999? The 4.1.2 software wasn't even the same. No multi-window, no Note 2 photo gallery, still rockin the old "My Files" app on the T999L 4.1.2 software.....At first I thought it was just the "LTE Radio" difference but I guess there's more to it seeing the differences in software.

Firmware refers to the files used in Odin, so for those, make sure you use the ones for your device only. You can flash any ROM, even 4.1.1 I believe.. And yes once there's a leaked 4.3 firmware for the t999l you should be able to just flash the modem and then flash a 4.3 tw ROM, based on what we experienced with the t999

Thanks a lot for this. Been bugging me for a while now. I'll probably take the plunge soon and use "The Recovery Way." Rooted my first S3 using motochopper back in June or July when I first got it, but problems arose and exchanged it at Costco (just got it and WiFi wouldn't connect after a factory reset). Been scared since lol. Also scared me that I wouldn't receive official updates anymore as it said it was modified, but that doesn't bug me anymore reading all the complaints about the whole no turning back.
Thanks again!
I'm looking into flashing a custom ROM onto my T999L for the first time as well...have any of you guys taken the plunge yet, and have any feedback on specific ROMS? I think I will try with AOKP
