I've flashed my epic 4g to boost mobile and I'm running CM10.0, one of the older nightly builds. After I smashed my screen I fired up my donor phone and it's been getting decent reception in my house, and I remember it doing the same before I switched to the epic (which I've been dealing with it only working in one corner of the house for a long time). Now that I've replaced the screen I miss the good reception that I'm used to now haha. My donor phone is the sanyo incognito, does anyone know if there is a way to get the same reception as my donor? I've flashed the latest PRL's, but haven't tried any other modems. I use linux and not sure I want to give odin another shot, heimdall has worked pretty good so far for flashing new recovery but odin gave me a lot of trouble and I ended up using heimdall to fix it. Any pointers? Maybe just try random modems? I really need better reception.. or maybe switch to metro? Thanks guys love the work being done here and all the good info.
First off, questions go in Q&A.
Second, the epics radio sucks. Try some of the other modems out and see how they work for you. Might be better, but they could also be worse.

A lot of people (myself included) stopped using the Epic's radios/modems and started using the radios/modems from the Nexus S 4G. Most of us have had far better signal strength with them.

So I constantly stay up to date with all the ics modems. My only question is are they really that different? It seems to me no matter which one I have speeds are the same, cell connection is the same does it really matter if I just use one and let it go at that?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
if you see no difference, than why do you keep flashing them?
If you don't see a difference go back or stay doesn't matter. For some the modems are night and day. I stay at fc15 because it works the best so far in my area. The later ones were giving me scratchy calls.

For me, the signal for data up/down improved sometimes, but not consistently enough to say.
But most definitely, without doubt, the GPS was a night and day improvement, after FC18.
Yea I must admit I am not the jump on it because its new type of guy. I mean I was on UnNamed Rom which is EL13 until I flashed Gummy rom, so to me its a what works well for you type of thing. That being said I have only tried 3 of the ICS modems and must admit FC22 got a GPS lock right away. To date its the fastest in that respects so I will stick with it.
I change them in hopes that one will be awesome and my internet goes faster. I don't have 4g in my area. And to everyone else thanks for the input.

I had the Evo 4g for about 1.5 years and it was a great phone. It started having problems so I decided to upgrade to the Samsung S2 on Sprint. Ever since I got it I have low signal most everywhere, can't connect to 4g unless I'm out under open sky, and my phone flips to roaming a lot. I have updated everything but still no fix. I'm rooted but on stock ATM. Please I need some suggestions for fixing this with tweaks or a better rom. Specs below.

2.3.6
EL29
All I can suggest is try all the modems,at most I get 4 bars,4g cuts out alot for me

Ignore the low signal stuff. Our phone is just really accurate. Nothing wrong with our radios. You'll still be fine if its low signal usually

A lot of times when I am roaming or have really low bars I can't make or receive calls at all. I seem to remember having similar problems with a Samsung device on T-Mobile. Is the hardware side of Samsung's weaker than HTC? If it was just low signal but I could still use the device as a phone I wouldn't care, but it is just an expensive toy a decent portion of my day as it is right now.
Try clearing your nvram and reactivating.

Yeah I ignore my signal bar as well.. Even when it's low, my calls data sms are just fine.. But then again I'm in a area where sprint works great

How do you clear your nvram?
Part of my point in all this is that I am in an area that has good Sprint coverage, the only difference between my usage is the phone. I was consistently on 4G with my Evo now I very rarely can connect or stay connected, I always had cell service on my Evo, now lots of dropped calls and static and unable to send/recieve texts unless under open sky.

Your best bet might be to try a bunch of different modems. [modems here = radios on other devices like HTC]
You'll have to root and add CWM to flash them. Modems are build 'independant'. Meaing you could be on EL29 and use an FG20 modem if you'd like. By far the best reception (both 3g an 4g) has been on the FG20.
If you want to keep your phone on EL29 stock use sfhub's 'Autoroot' and add EL29+CWM-Rogue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Hit up the 'Modem repository by rwilco12 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
After each modem flash I suggest updating the PRL and Profile too.
Find one that gives you the best signal for your area.
There are also '3g/4g speed tweak' posts in this forum That will work on GB and ICS builds.
Good luck.

You would think they would've mellowed this out of the all the phones by now, but you may be experiencing the infamous Loss of Service (LOS) issue this phone wrought when it was first released.

You can either use odin or a dialer code + your MSL.
There are new PRL out and I get a better signal now and better 3g speeds. Update prl and profile first. Next try different modems, I like FE22
Thank you everyone. I just updated the PRL and Profile again. I'll see if that makes any difference and if not I will start running through the modems. If I find something that works I'll post back.
Hey guys,
I'm still hanging on to my Epic 4G. I was running CM9 for the past few months until it started getting very laggy and I couldn't get MMS to work to save my life.
I went back to a plain old Deodexed FC09 (the one in qbking77's youtube video on how to root on FC09). I was tolerating the lackluster 2.3 software in favor of everything working properly. As of the past month, Sprint has been working on towers in the Chicago area and coverage has suffered. I was no longer able to get 3G, I had to turn on 4G or wifi to use facebook or any data. I then took a look at my wifes HTC EVO 4G LTE and as of yesterday, she is running 3G data without any problem. I reflashed mine with a fresh FC09 yesterday, and still no change.
As of this point everything is backed up and I have nothing to lose. Should I try out CM10? Is there anything special about flashing a kang? I've never done it before. What all is not working on the CM10 kangs? I'm nowhere near an expert when it comes to the android platform, but I can handle rooting and flashing roms just fine. Am I getting in over my head?
Thanks!
Matt

Thanks dude. Care to chime in on the question? I'm quite a fan of your work and value your opinion.
Thanks.
In my opinion, not yet. It's a bit too unstable and laggy for daily use at this point. I'd wait.
The instability is not worth it for an OS not that different from ICS
Exactly what xboxfanj said. Wait a little longer. It is good for a taste now but needs a little more work.

cool, thanks!
My story begins when i got my new shiny D710 over a year ago. I loved the stock ROM that it came with (i wish i knew what version it was). Battery life was great! Signal was good inside my basement apt. i mean, i had 2 to 3+ voice bars and call quality was good in NYC.
updates kept coming through and then came the dreaded ICS update nightmare. every call was a dropped call or just no signal at all (stop sign). i gave the updates another month or two to see if anything got better, and it did not. i made a bold decision to wipe my entire phone completely and go back to GB EL29 stock, which came rooted. I was lucky enough to move into another decent apt. on an upper floor but STILL had really bad voice signal strength on EL29, 1 bar or no signal at all. it takes about 10 minutes for roaming to kick in, then it disappears after my call is completed. is it my phone or my ROM? Can anyone suggest a ROM that enhances the voice signal? it doesnt have to be GB, but i do enjoy it's battery life without having to install/tweak crazy battery saver apps. 4G data gets a full strength signal so i dont know what i am doing wrong.
My emergency flip phone from virgin mobile prepaid has full bars compared to this thing! both are CMDA!
I myself live in NYC and for me I was using Stock Rooted FL16. That gave me pretty decent battery life as well as pretty good signal. But battery life is different for everybody and every device. Hope that helps..

Try different modems. There is a sticky in the development section.
funny how i am getting full bars inside my apt. while voice roaming. is sprint limiting my call capabilities on purpose? roaming on another carrier is a no brainer. it doesnt seem like the phone is the issue. i might just give FL16 a shot. is there no way to keep voice roaming ON all the time?
There's an app called "Roam Control" by MrGreg for rooted phones where you can force roam. "Not roam control" is in Google Play Store, you can get Roam Control at the developer's website

Try changing your prl. If concerned about battery life try a diff GB modem.
Pp.

I absolutely agree with this. It sounds like your problem started when you received an OTA update that changed your modem.
If you flashed a rom zip file, it did not change the modem. The modem must be flashed separately. Try flashing a GB modem.
If you want to use a GB rom, I suggest Caukulin's v3.0. Everything works perfect and the battery life is the best I have ever had on this phone.
I was never able to get a good signal at home. I can go about 1/4 mile in any direction and get a good signal. I got tired of dropping nearly every call so I solved the problem by using a custom prl that uses Verizon's towers. Haven't had a dropped call since.

Thank you so much! I didnt realize that the modem would have not changed! You are awesome!!! If I use a custom prl, would that mean that my data is also roaming or just the voice?

I haven't been able to connect to 4G at home since I got this phone. I haven't tested it outside of my household area but I know 4G service is here because the rest of my family has GS4 and GS2 phones and they get 4G service in the house. Every time I try to connect I get "initializing..." then "connecting" then "disconnected" with a "Authentication Failed" popup afterwards. I've updated the PRL and profile but still a no-go.
My current setup is:
ROM: Stock FC09 Odex BML (Rooted)
Kernel: ShadowKernel BML v1.01
Modem: DK28 (I tried all 16 modems available here and none gave me 4G service)
Recovery: CWM 5.0.2.7
Anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong?
Your problem is the piss poor radio in the Epic. That coupled with the horrendous building penatration of Wimax make for a bad indoor 4g experience.

Don't mistake my criticism for dislike. For all of it's faults, the OG Epic is probably the best thing to hit smartphones since the original Blackberry.
Go check out some of the other 2+ year old devices and see how many of them still have new ROMs being put out and the number of former owners who drop by the forums to help out the noobs.
You have much more than a physical keyboard to be thankful for, my friend.
