Hello,
Device : Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (GT-N7100)
I am a new Android user and I tried installing a Custom ROM (KitKat 4.4) on my device which worked well.
I used TWRP to boot from in order to install it. Later I tried another ROM which seems to have bricked the device.
Now when I start my device, it doesn't progress pass the Boot Logo.
Is there a way to restore the device ? Any method using Odin ?
I don't have to worry about losing data because there's nothing to back up.
I would appreciate it if someone could point me a method to install a reliable (Stock) Jelly Bean 4.3 firmware.
I do not use it for making calls - only as a WiFi device. Would it be possible to use the recently released original 4.3 firmware
available for India, Hong Kong, China ?
You can get your stock rom from sammobile and flash with odin. You can also try booting to recovery factory resetting/flashing a different custom rom. I've had my share off boot loops

Thanks ! I've got it working now.
Guys,
!!!!! N00B Alert - I am not an expert in what I am doing. Just following instructions from experts like you. I will try to be as technically articulate as possible !!!
I had recently (about a month ago) rooted my phone to install CM 10.2. I love CM.
In an attempt to unlock my phone I wanted to get back to stock ROM. So I googled and bumped into a way to do it from Kies (not sure if it was a good idea). I followed the instructions and boom the firmware initialization failed half way through. Now when I turn my phone on I get this error "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". So I tried again multiple times but it won't work.
Then I thought may be there is another way and googled and found this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2186967
Followed the instructions to the word, but I see the dreaded FAIL message in ODIN.
Below is the log. (I tried twice in one stretch).

Another thing is I am not able to get to recovery mode. When I try I can only get to the Firmware error screen I mentioned above.
Any help to get out of this mess would be great!
did you make sure you had the LK3 bootloader before trying to flash stock? if so I also had Odin fail while flashing this firmware. only one that worked for me was root66 firmware. i never booted all the way in but i read that you have to uncheck "auto restart" before flashing, once it is done pull battery and boot into recovery and factory reset. if that doesn't work you can do what I did. Odin flash cwm and install a rom from your sdcard

Thanks for your response.
I didnt know I have to have the LK3 bootloader, may be I missed in the instructions.
Anyway, how do I flash Clockworkmod from Odin? if I can do that I can get back to CM 10.2 and then try paying for unlock code.

Make sure the bootloader that's currently on your phone is not from the 4.3 OTA update. If it is, you can't use Odin to restore a stock rom, you'll have to find a AT&T 4.3 ROM based on the leaked 4.3 AT&T ROM.

Yes I am on AT&T.
After I read your post about flashing CWM with ODIN I researched and found a method. I tried it and it PASSED!. Then my phone restarted and boom it booted directly into CM 10.2. Not sure how, felt a bit creepy. Then I updated to latest Nightly CM 11 build and brough back all my apps and my phone has LIFE right now. Thanks for the tip! :good:

May be it is, I updated to 4.3 thru OTA and after a few days rooted and installed CM 10.2. How do I check?
Then this should be the reason that ODIN didnt work for me. Which genuine source I should look at for a AT&T 4.3 ROM based on the leaked 4.3 AT&T ROM.

I believe if you were originally on 4.1 then you still have that bootloader. I dont think OTA updates the bootloader so you should be able to downgrade with the root66 if that is the case.

when you say "find" an AT&T 4.3 rom, I wish you could give me a link. I am working with a device that was handed to me that was on 4.3 then flashed to a t999 rom. Now I cannot get it to flash ANYTHING AT&T 4.3 (and I've looked all over), neither in odin, nor in recovery, except, oddly enough it will reflash the same t999 image. The radio (modem) also no longer works.

This is why your flash to stock failed, lucky for you. The MJB bootloader is not downgradable and if 'successful' is bad news...aka brick, requiring serious hacking if not JTAG service to repair. As far as ROM's go as long they do not attempt to change the bootloader (none i've seen do, but you never know) the worst that could happen is a 'status 7' fail in recovery and no change to your firmware, pertaining to the bootloader that is. There are any number of other reasons why something could go wrong during the process. MJB has been around long enough most customs ROM's have probably adapted their updater-script to include it. If not there are ways around this I (and several others) have documented elsewhere. My advice moving forward, make sure to educated yourself thoroughly before attempting anything that can brick your device and if you are not sure, ask first flash later.

I had tried to flash that via odin without success. What I was able to do to fix the issue was to flash a custom recovery via odin (TWRP). Then use the custom recovery to blind flash (no signature or md5 check) the ATT modem, and then I was able to flash the link you sent. After that it still didnt boot, so i had to reboot in TWRP, dump caches, reboot again, wait, literally like 5 minutes and it came back to life. Whew, what a day.
I need help recovering my GS3, i tried using CF auto root to root my phone and i guess it didnt work because my phone doesnt boot past the samsung screen. I didnt have any custom recovery installed so i dont believe and thing was backed up. I am able to get into download mode and recovery mode. I tried flashing stock firmware using kies but it encounters a error saying its a problem with my phone, I tried using odin but it also gives me an error when flashing firmware saying

Based on your Odin printout in the first post you were flashing a modified 4.1.1 kernel to install root. This should be fine if you were on either the 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 stock ROM. If you were on the 4.3 stock ROM your root attempt is probably the source of the problem.
IMPORTANT How to proceed from here depends on if you were on 4.3 or an earlier version of stock.
Also, since this forum is for AT&T and Canadian variants; I see the title of the first post says i747 - is this correct? It matters.

ok, not to jack his thread, but what if you are on the 4.3 bootloader? i didnt do what he did, but i am stuck in a similar situation. I am on the 4.3 bootloader, but i do have a custom recovery installed. problem is i get an error when i try to wipe. Ive tried flashing stock 4.3 rom via sideload in stock recovery, and modified rom though twrp. both roms install fine, but dont boot, but they do freeze in different points so i know something is being flashed. ive also tried wiping in cwm and stock. im bout ready to flash anything to this phone. oh and a nandroid restore fails after boot img flashes.

From your message, you likely were on stock 4.3. Since you are able to get into recovery and download modes, you may try a restore via custom recovery. Please see the thread below on how to install custom recovery and do a stock restore ...

Before doing anything else, boot into recovery. If you are on a stock recovery the very first line will tell you that the system recovery is 3e
If you have one of the custom recoveries it will be different. If you have one of the custom recoveries, TWRP or CWM, you can use the link Larry299 posted earlier in this thread to restore your phone. If you are on the stock recovery and the 4.3 bootloader I don't know what to suggest.

There is a chance that being rooted will prevent you from using the OTA official update. I've seen reports of people being able to update to the official 4.3 while rooted, but I've also seen reports of people not being able to update.
Before you make that update, bear in mind that the official 4.3 bootloader, its name ends in MJB, is the one that will prevent you from ever going back to an older bootloader. Some of the devs and the more experienced on here have no problem with that. Others do consider it an issue. An alternative is to install the leaked 4.3 bootloader, it's name ends in MJ2. That bootloader will allow you to downgrade to the 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 bootloaders, or so I have read. There is information about this in the development and the general forums for our device.
To muddy the waters more; if you intend to sim unlock your device without gettings codes from your carrier you need to do it from the 4.1.1 official ROM. A point you can not return to from the official 4.3 ROM, or so I've read.

I've not touched my phone in over a year (at least it seems that way)
I'm on an older version on Android (4.1.2) and baseband MD4
What do i need to flash one of these new roms? I haven't flashed or checked up on roms etc in a long time. So i'm kind of lost with all this new ND8 stuff.
Any help would be great, as to what i need to do in order to flash a newer rom.

Ignore the ND8 stuff, as that is indicitive of a newer modem and bootloader, and you would be getting yourself deep into Samsung KNOX territory. If you don't know what KNOX is, there's plenty of info on it here on XDA and on the web. All I can say is be careful with KNOX.
If you flash PhilZ recovery via ODIN and your ROM of choice and GAPPs via PhilZ, you shouls be good to go.
PhilZ DL link:

.MD5 files are for ODIN, .zip files are for later updating the recovery within the recovery.

There is a link where you should direct your questions regarding that ROM.
As for using ODIN, it's quite simple. Just download it and run the program from the folder directly (no installation required). Choose "PDA", find the recovery file (.MD5), and press start.
If the recovery doesn't stick, you may have to uncheck the "auto-reboot". Retry the flashing process. Once finished (should read "PASS" in green), unplug the USB remove the battery, re-insert the battery while holding Power+Vol UP+Home. That should take you into PhilZ.

What version of ODIN are you using? I got "Odin-v3-09" off google and there doesn't seem to be a "PDA" option.

Try ODIN 3.07 and use the PDA option. Not sure if that'll help, but give it a go.
The ND8 works great for some, and others dont like it. Personally id flash ND8 as i get better LTE signal with it. After ND8 boots flash philz recovery in odin 3.07 like he suggested.. go back to recovery and root with the philz option, under the "advanced" menu i believe, and install supersu on the stock rom. Run supersu and it will prompt you to disable knox, just hit yes. Then update to your rom of choice.

Thanks for the help. I ended up just flashing the stock ND8 run and reflashing using Auto-Root or w/e it's called. Then i flashed the "Tribute" rom and it seems to be working great.
Thanks again!
Hi everyone,
First, I am sorry that I am posting on a topic that I am sure is all over the forums. It is just I cannot find what I need and I need help.
Can the Galaxy S3 from Boost Mobile on a prepaid plan be rooted or not? This is the exact Model # "SPH-L710T". If not i get it, but if so would someone please give me a hand?
Can i get a step by step on the Tools I would need to do this and also advice on a custom ROM to load if that is possible? I am using Linux Mint 17 for a OS at the moment. I am technically inclined for the most part. I am a Network Technician and have rooted a handful of other phones in the past. Favorite being my first. Vibrant with Team Whiskey ROM few years ago.
I would use mobile ODIN if that is possible. I am all about doing everything I can directly from the phone.
Thank you in advance for any help i can get.

when did you buy the s3 from boost mobile? i work at selling and activating them and i have one my self and they all have the model # SPH-L710 with out the "T", now seeing as your with boost that would mean you're on Kit-Kat 4.4.2 aka NDC now if you can't manage to root it on NDC i would suggest PC Odin Flashing the Stock ND8 rom that will erase everything on your phone and then trying the same root methods you have tried on NDC on the ND8 4.4.2 rom
PS. Don't use Mobile Odin for flashing Stock.tar files and since your running Linux/Ubuntu i would say set up a virtual machine with Windows 7-8.1 then using Odin on the Virtual Windows on your Linux OS
I just bought this phone few days ago. 9/9/14

I have not attempted any flashing at all. Also there is an Odin I believe for Linux. I had thought I used something similar because I rooted the Galaxy S2 Tmobile Prepaid phone I had last.

here is a link to the specs
by the wording use in the Detailed review it seems to be a newer version of the S3 that boost have that comes with 4.3 instead of 4.1.2 and it turns out mine was also one of these "updated" models even though on the back of the Phone it doesn't show the "T" now i would suggest flashing Philz Recovery in Odin that has an Option to root the Stock Rom that your on....
and the SPH-L710 came out in July 2012 and the SPH-L710T came out on May of this year....
Can you give me links and a brief run down on what to do please? A little unsure about this since the model is so new and not many it seems like have done anything with it. Im thinking i just want to root but if a ROM that works is out i might go for it after a backup. I have ROM manager premium also just so you know to handle that.

well before when i had NDC i used TowelRoot to root it and that worked but there are some with even newer s3's from boost have reported it not to work mind you i got this one like 2-3 months after boost made it so the 4.4.2 that you have might be tighter locked up with Knox....but here is the link to Philz Recovery this one is made for all US s3 variants so this might work to get you root if anything it will work to help you flash a pre-rooted rom if that's what you'll want instead. and just read through the link that i posted to know what to do to flash it
Thank you ☺

uncheck reboot then click start and wait for it to finish you'll know by it saying pass or something similar now keep your phone connected via usb then press and hold the power button and let it turn off then just use the Power+Home+Volume up keys to boot into the recovery and Odin/Jodin will say that it was successful
It says i need a PIT file

No i dont. This is in Jodin. I put the tar md5 in PDA category as instructed and it asks for a PIT file

okay once your in Philz recovery touch where it says "PhilZ Settings" then touch Re-root System (SuperSU) and then it will root your stock rom.....but just flashing the recovery wont give you root
will flashing Philz modify the modem?
Question, I've done this before only shortly after messing up the radio. Will flashing Philz modify the modem? I don't mind tripping knox (educate me further if I lack precaution). would like to attempt this again as I plan on backing up completely per mount in the future + further modifying & building roms for this model. (There are people out there that are stuck with no radio from flashing incompatible roms backing up the modem & hosting it in a flashable zip will be my first task) thanks in advance :fingers-crossed:

flashing the recovery it self won't change or erase the modem at all....flashing a different modem on the other hand will.....now if you have stock NDC with stock kernel on your S3 but you flash the ND8 modem then you'll get bad signal and what not but if you have the custom kernel from Ktoonsez then all will be good; the same can be said for stock ND8 with stock kernel on your S3 and the NDC modem is here and can be flashed in the recovery but the ND8 modem can only be flashed through Odin in the stock rom.tar
Thanks, That's as I thought. I just wanted to cover my bases. Any tips for backing up the modem (triband)?

That is great news. Congratulations. Question please. Did it ask you for a PIT file? I am on Linux Mint so will be using Heimdall or Jodin(web based ODIN). I managed to connect Heimdall and download the PIT file from the device. I am assuming if it asks for a PIT file I give it the one I made from the phone and I am good to go. Does anyone else believe this to be true? I should be good?
Any preference for Jodin or Heimdall?
