[Q] Rooting my Galaxy S3, need some guidance. - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I need to make sure that I have instructions ahead ahead of time, because currently I am having to tether for internet access.
Model: SGH-T999
Baseband Version: T999UVDMD5
My phone is currently running stock. However after finding out about Carrier IQ, I would like to root my device so I can remove it. FOREVER!
I am mostly just paranoid that Carrier IQ includes information about me using PDANet+ and I really dont want Tmobile to find out. I have performed the TTL=64 Registry trick, and Mask Tethering in PDANet is set to Level 1. I am also using a User Agent Switcher to force Chrome into appearing to be an Android browser, but I am still nervous that Tmobile might find a way throught Carrier IQ
Rooting would provide some great benefits. If at all I would like a manner that allows me to root without losing everything and just being able to continue using it as if nothing happened, besides being rooted. I have a decent number of apps and I would like to not have to reconfigure them all.
If anyone can assist me on this, that would be great.

You will not loose any music, pictures or videos and google will automatically import your contacts.
The only things you will loose if you don't back them up are your apps that you got from the playstore.
Follow instructions exactly.
Easy and sure way to get your phone rooted - Here is s step by step guide:
Download the newest pre-rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 Jellybean Touchwiz v4.1.2 rom: T999_UVDMD5
After downloading make a folder on your computer's desktop and unzip the
file using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file
Here is the link for Odin: http://d-h.st/Q14
Download ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware (a windows app)
Download the Odin Flash firmware for T999 Tmobile then copy it to the same folder as Odin
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the same folder as the TAR file you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up,
then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the Firmware you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache!
(It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)
Good Luck!

For sure lol, it has been posted so many times I have it memorized now. Seen it other sites as well even lol. All good in the hood.

Thanks muchly, I will copy down all of this and go from here.
Now regarding updates, I do not want to OTA update with this correct.
And Aerowinder, your solution is for CWM. I might want to go with that, CWM has been bat**** useful for me in the past with an older phone (Which was much much harder and used a completely different routine just to do this. However I cant rely on that Youtube video to guide me as my phone is the only form of internet I get as of the moment(loltethering)

Root access and tethering but stock?

Hello,
I know nothing about rooting so I may be using the wrong terms. I've read a number of people are having issues with their phones after they've rooted or changed to rom or something. I've also read you can run stock(?) but be rooted (or something like that) so you won't have any issues.
Is there a way to give root access without really changing anything about your phone other than enabling tethering? I really only want to enabling tethering. Oh and the sonicwall client says the phone must be rooted or have root access or something before I can run it.
Yeah that can be done, but once you're rooted, you'll end up flashing roms lol

Instructions on how to get root with stock kernel here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1273730
I followed the instructions to the tee and it worked perfectly. I have wifi tethering working now.
Thanks. If anyone has been flashing or rooting on Samsung Androids for a while, what do you think the chance is that I'll be able to do the over the air update for this phone when it comes out if I do root it?

Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. To be honest I really don't know what you said though. I'm sure it is simple and obvious but I don't know squat about modifying my android phone so I'm not sure what you said really means.
Anyone know if there are any videos I can follow along to get to where I need to be. I think if someone tries to explain it to me in text I'll get lost and people will get frustrated with my lack of android knowledge.

Here's what you will be doing:
1) Use "Odin" method to flash kernel+cwm recovery (.tar file) from your computer to the phone.
2) Use recovery to flash su.zip from the phone itself.
3) Same as 1 but stock kernel+recovery.
Here's how to do it:
1) Install Samsung Kies software on your computer. It installs usb drivers necessary to communicate to the phone.
2) Install odin software on your computer. Download .tar file for kernel+cwm.
3) Open odin, follow directions in the first thread to point to the .tar file you download from the same thread.
4) Shut down phone. Use key combination to reboot the phone into "download mode". Connect phone to computer with usb cable. Use odin on computer to commence flash of .tar file. Phone will reboot.
5) Download su.zip from the first thread. Place it on usb storage of the phone.
6) Shut down phone again. Hold down Volume Up and power buttons until you see orange menu. That's CWM recovery.
5) Choose install .zip from sdcard (it really installs from usb storage, not from sdcard). Choose select zip on sd card. Navigate to su.zip, confirm.
Then use the menus to go back and reboot the phone.
6) Download stock kernel+recovery from second thread. Start from step 3 above to flash the stock .tar file.
EDIT: Oh yeah, there's a video in the first thread. Not sure how useful it is though.
EDIT2: The video is old. It has conflicting information with the stuff in the first thread. Use it very cautiously, use the links to download from the first thread. You also don't need .pit file. Only .tar files.
EDIT3: these are the file links:
Kies: link
odin: http://forums.acsyndicate.net/ACS/Odin3 v1.85.zip
CWM+kernel .tar: http://forums.acsyndicate.net/ACS/acs-eb30-clockwork-epic-touch-4g-sep-20-4-00-pm.tar
su.zip: http://www.multiupload.com/TD3X6TM9O1
stock .tar: http://www.inspiringandroid.com/mirrors/devices/epic4gtouch/kernels/acs-eg30-stock-kernel-pulled.tar
Thanks! I'll give it a try.
I installed KIES it says "reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies. I'm not sure how to connect it in Samsung Kies mode.
Odin 1.85 shows it connected as ID0 (com5)
I only have auto reboot selected and the check for PDA as well as the acs-eb30 ewm file.
The phone says downloading but the first box in odin says fail.
Not sure if it is safe to reboot phone.
To answer a question you asked earlier, if you root and take an OTA update the chances are very good you'll lose root. If you're rooted and want to stay that way, wait until devs work with the update and come up with a "root-safe" version.

You don't need to run kies to use Odin. Kies is only installed for usb drivers.
I'm not sure what would happen if you had both running at the same time.
If you want to use Kies later, you would need to uncheck USB Debugging on the phone in Settings/Applications/Development.
The phone says "downloading" regardless of whether it is flashing the kernel or not. Did you follow the instructions from the first thread?
4. Open Odin3 V1.85 and on the left side ONLY have AUTO reboot checked (VERY IMPORTANT)
6. Check the PDA slot and then press the PDA button and navigate to the Tar file and select it
7. Now power off your Epic Touch.
8. Once fully powered off, press and hold volume down, home key, and power button at the SAME time.*This will take you into Odin mode.
9. Plug your phone into your PC.
10. You should see COM# (the number doesn't matter) in the ID:COM box
11. Press start and let it run through the process!*

There's a step missing, but I suppose they didn't mention it since it's fairly obvious. I don't know if it matters...
The step is 8a) When you see odin prompt to continue, confirm to enter odin mode.
Also make sure that those .tar files downloaded correctly.
Thanks - you nailed it. If you have kies running you can't get odin to update the phone. My phone is all updated - ran all the steps.
Do I use a built in app on it for tethering or add an app?

My sonicwall client works great with root access. I haven't been able to get the wifi tether to work yet. I can't find the device if I enable security. I can't seem to find the right BT drivers when my computer finds it via BT. If I disable security I can findi it via wifi but with our without acccess control disabled I can't actually complete the wifi connection.
Update - I did get it to connect via tether after all. I hadn't ever had an issue connecting to about 20 wireless networks with my laptop but I did notice a 5002 event churning away in the event viewer when I tried to connect. I updated my wireless drivers and I'm all set!
Thanks for all the help and patience!!!

"[ROOT] Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE (SGH-i957) *updated 2/10/2012*"

People have requested that the initial thread from the general section be cleaned up into a step by step, so here goes. This is ONLY FOR HONEYCOMB 3.2 for the SGH-i957.
NEXT WARNING: USE OF ODIN CAN DAMAGE YOUR PHONE IF USED INCORRECTLY. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DUE TO FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
Method 1
This is for people who want to keep the stock kernel. This will not trip the flash counter.
1. Download and Install the Samsung Drivers for your device. Install Kies, or the latest mobile drivers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
2. Download CWM Recovery (courtesy of utkanos)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9459955/recovery/testing/SGHI957/v2/CWMR5x_i957_recovery.tar.md5
2. Download Odin 1.85
http://www.mediafire.com/?cghfk06lcfiwi29
3. Open Odin 1.85 as administrator
4. Place the CWMR.tar file in the PDA slot. (Make sure you do not have any boxes in the options panel checked besides the ones that were checked when opening the program - should only be auto reboot and f.reset time)
5. Place the tablet in download mode. Hold vol up + vol down and hold power until the device powers on into download mode. Hit volume up to proceed after the warning screen
6. Plug the tablet into the computer on a main usb slot and it will be detected by Odin in one of the ID:COM slots (will appear as yellow)
7. Hit Start - cwm recovery should will be flashed to the tablet. Tablet will restart.
8. Download superuser.zip from the skyrocket forums (courtesy Copperhed)
http://www.mediafire.com/?4h8cmh287mcxuf8
9. Copy superuser.zip to the tablet
10. Reboot into recovery (Power + Volume Up)
11. Navigate to 'Install zip from SD card' and select 'superuser.zip'. You will get an SD Card error when it is done installing, this is normal.
You are now rooted with stock kernel.
Method 2
This is Da_G's work. This will trip your flash counter.
Steps:
1. Download and Install the Samsung Drivers for your device. Install Kies, or the latest mobile drivers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
2. Download Da_G's modded kernel

Thanks Orlando we needed do that as there have been an increasing amount of people asking "how do I ". By the way if you type Odin 1.85 into Google it will come up with the first result being a link to a direct download from XDA. This makes it easier and faster to download because you get an instant file save dialog.
I am working on a ROM/Recovery for you guys now, need some testers with adb knowledge in irc.irondust.net #skyrocket

Then I can try to do the Hulu hack... Wish me luck with that...

Shame I didn't back up my Bell ROM. Bell doesn't disable the built in hotspot functionality.
Good news is, there are several international versions of the Tab 8.9 LTE about to hit the ground in Asia and Europe (along with another Canadian carrier). That means that the chances of getting a good "generic" ROM leaked are looking pretty good. Check with Samfirmware on a regular basis.

Hi guys!
Is it possible to reset the Flash counter in this Tab using a JIG ?
I have a microUSB JIG I bought for my SGS2.
Can I use it also for the Tab...?
I guess I can buy a standard USB to microUSB converter,
and connect it to the Tab's original USB cable.
The question is if those are the same pins in the Tab's connector as on the USB JIG,
Or the Tab needs different pins to be connected (with the 300 Kohm resistor)...
Newer bootloaders from Samsung are jig-proof. No resetting the counter at the moment.
Does Root remove the Bell SIM lock?
Or another way of asking, is there a way to remove the SIM lock without getting an unlock code?

You'll need to get a code the conventional way.
So far it looks like Samsung finally caught on (or rather, finally cared, or rather the carriers made them care) that it was stupid easy for the end user to unlock a Galaxy device.

Back to root
I am assuming that you want to go back to stock without root for warranty, and you already flashed a custom rom with root. That means your firmware counter will be greater than zero and will tip them off that you did it. The following instructions are for a PC. Mac is going to be different.
First thing, download the Triangle Away App. I am linking to the pay version on the App store, because it is cheap and the dev is awesome and deserves a buck or two for helping you. There is a free version that you can find in an XDA forum post, just search triangle away. This requires root, so you have to do it first. Run the app, read the warnings, and go ahead with resetting the counter. The warnings sound dire, but I have not had any trouble (neither has anyone else that I have heard of).
Then, download and install the Toolkit. This will install Odin and a whole bunch of other useful stuff. Make sure you thank the developer. I recommend installing it to C:\, but wherever you put it make sure you can find the folder. Run the toolkit, type "no" to check for update, hit enter, type "3" for model, hit enter, type "1" to install SGS3 drivers, hit enter. Close the toolkit for now.
You can find all of the firmware versions HERE. Make sure you thank the dev, they are providing a super valuable resource. If you want to get rid of root you are going to need one of the stock firmwares. The newest is UVDLJA from the section marked "Official SGH-T999 Firmware (for use with Odin)". Download it. It is a .zip file, and you will need to extract it using winzip, 7zip, winrar or whatever. The file you get out will be named something like "T999UVDLJA_T999TMBDLJA_T999UVDLJA_HOME.tar.md5". Remember where you put the extracted file.
Enable USB debugging under developer options in the settings menu of your phone. Follow the directions HERE to put your phone into download mode. Plug your phone into the computer.
In the toolkit folder find "Odin3_V3.07.exe" and run it. "At this point please make sure that ONLY TWO OPTIONS TICKED are "Auto Reboot" and "F.Reset Time" (otherwise you could end up with a very expensive paperweight)". Click the PDA button to open the firmware file that you extracted (that's why you need to remember where it is). Hit start and wait for a bit.
The phone is now back to stock with the flash counter set to 0, no root, and the latest firmware/rom.

Then again, you might only have the radio set to receive only edge.
Have you tried the *#*#4636#*#* option?
or even easier, Phone info app from market
set preferred network type and selecting WCDMA preferred
that just might be your only problem. (I strongly suspect that!)

Hit thanks if this helped.

[Q] Kies closes on GB27 update

I'm trying to update my old phone which is now my sister in law's. It's stock unrooted ICS FL24.
When I try to use Kies to update, it gets through the first step of dowlnoading firmware upgrade components, but when it reaches 100% the window hangs for 30 seconds or so and then disappears and Kies closes.
It's the most recent version of Kies, I even uninstalled and reinstalled it, but it's still doing it. Has anyone come across this and a way to fix it? My sister in law wants the update but I can't seem to do it for her.

Use that link to download an Odin One-Click tool that will make your life easy. Whether you're looking to root her phone or keep it un-rooted, there is a tool for you on that page. Download whichever one of the tools you need whether or not you need to root her phone or keep it un-rooted. RESTORE versions will WIPE all user data from the phone. NODATA versions will NOT wipe user data from the phone. After downloading the one-click tool you need, simply turn off her phone and once it's fully powered down, press and hold volume down and the power key at the same time until you see the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo. You can let go now. It will boot into something called "Download mode" and that's what we need.
I'm going to assume you've already installed the samsung drivers since you're using KIES. If not, get them from here and install.
Make sure the phone is FULLY CHARGED at this point.
After the drivers are installed, launch the Odin One-Click program and wait for it to appear. Once it's loaded go ahead and connect your phone to the computer. Make sure your phone is still in download mode before you connect to the computer! The top left box in that Odin window should light up with a yellow box with "0:COM#" in it, once that's lighted up, go ahead and click start at the bottom.
If you do not see a yellow "0:COM#" light up in the top left set of boxes, you may need to run the ODIN One-Click as an administrator.
DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE AND DO NOT TURN IT OFF WHILE ODIN IS WORKING! Once it's done, it will change the bigger box on the left of the "0:COM#" to a green box with the word "PASS!" in it. Once this happens, the phone will reboot on its own. Once the phone reboots, it's safe to disconnect from the computer.
And that's it. You've skipped trying to use the crappy KIES software and you've successfully installed GB27 (JB 4.1.2)! I'd say it's time to celebrate!
Hope this helps you. Cheers!
(alternatively you could just follow the instructions from the page where you download your ODIN tool from... Thanks to "Admin" from that website for the post, garwynn from here for leading me there, and QBKing77 for instructions that taught me how to do this back when ICS just released for this phone. )

I've heard about a lot of people having problems with the no data version of gb27. I don't really wanna do the full restore one. Is there any other options out there?

No. Use a NODATA rooted FL24, install Titanium (PRO highly recommended), and backup all your apps, call log, sms inbox, etc.
Then put the Titanium Backup folder from your SDcard on a PC (or somewhere else safe, off the internal storage. External SD card is ok too).
Then run the RESTORE ROOTED GB27, which will repartition your internal storage, likely wiping everything. This is why you moved your backups. Install Titanium and restore your backup. Reboot.
Then reboot to recovery and do a nandroid backup. Copy this backup to your PC for futureproofing.
Now, if you want to be unrooted, you can Odin a NODATA UNROOTED GB27, and you should have all your apps and such intact, without root access.

[FACTORY STOCK] GS4 Stock Firmware Odin Package- Original Factory ROM

This will only work for Windows!

mirror: http://www.135.a.hostable.me/public/I337UCUAMDB_I337ATTAMDB_ATT.zip
Instructions
extract I337UCUAMDB_I337ATTAMDB_ATT.zip in your downloads folder
Open Odin
Click PDA
Navigate to where you extracted the firmware and select it
Hold Volume Down + Home + Power until your device enters Download(Odin) Mode, then press volume up.
Connect the device to the computer and hit Start in Odin.
Stand back from the device and the computer until its complete.
Flashing Tips
Always use a GOOD USB cable, preferably stock.
Always use a good USB port in the back of the computer.
Always set the device in a good position where it will not become disconnected or disturbed.
Above all, Always use Heimdall over Odin when it becomes available. It's not available yet.
How to make a firmware like this
I was actually uploading a copy from my own computer obtained via exploit from bfielding's device, and I decided to try kies. The official package is a much better idea. Samsung Kies requires that you put in your model and serial, then it downloads the firmware in an encrypted package, extracts it, flashes it and deletes it. There's a short window where you can get in and grab the firmware.
Kies downloads to a temporary file called (in my case) C:\Users\Adam\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp####.tmp (where # is an integer less than 10). When the firmware is extracted, it goes into a new folder called C:\Users\Adam\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp####\. Yank that and put it on hotfile .
Nice work as always sir!

There was alot going on and I had multiple windows up. I created one in Linux from bfielding's device, was uploading it to hotfile, uploading one from Kies, and was sent this link too somewhere in the mix. I guess I lost my upload link. Oh well, looks like we're using the Sammobile version.

@AdamOutler, based on your video on the other thread, the motherboard of the ATT and the TMo version of the S4 are the same, does it mean that if flash the TMo version of the ROM on the ATT it may unlock the bootloader or are those two distinctive matters ?

NO! the signatures are different. You'll brick your device, but I'm not sure to what extent.

I was just talking to my friend who works at Koodo (Canada). They receive their S4s tomorrow, and I had make sure he places a hold on one of them for me!
Using the steps you provided in your OP, I'll upload Koodo's ROM tomorrow!
THANK YOU!!

Thanks but let's take an stupid case scenario:
ATT device
TMo odin ROM
try to flash 2 onto 1
Fail or succeed
if succeeds -> bootloader unlocked ?
if fails -> can we flash back ATT odin rom now we have it?
If it flashed, which it wont, then you would now uave bootloaders with the wrong signature and would need to jtag it
You the man Adam!

ok, so basically the signature is check before the flash of the rom. so if my understanding is correct the solutions would be to
disable the check of the signature
have the TMo rom with the ATT signature to flash the unlocked bootloader
change the bootloader with a non-signed version
Please correct me if I am wrong, I am new at this and I am trying to understand what Adam explains in the other thread but I am sometime very confused (and not knowledgeable enough)
