Some days I just get frustrated about this particular debatable issue and needed to rant..so...lucky you (all).
I have this glorious, beautiful, mint condition blue galaxy s3. It's lightweight, beautiful screen, etc. But how many of us really get to enjoy the phone as it was designed - I would guess few to none. Why? I don't know about you guys, but, as soon as I get my beautiful new phone, it is immediately enshrouded (is that a word?) in a screen protector and some sort of case (TPU, otterbox) etc. And there it stays. I mean, I have to keep my phone in mint condition, don't I ?(rhetorical). This so when I want another phone, I can sell it on ebay or swappa as mint and get the most money - and brag about how I take care of my equipment and how it has been protected the entire time I owned it.
Every once in a while I have to do a battery pull or something and I get to hold my baby in my hand, as God - wait, I mean Samsung, intended and enjoy it. And then, something happens. I get kinda mad.
Why am I so determined to protect it? To not enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed? Why can't I just let it be free?!!!!!!!
The answer: I don't know. I'm a geek. I'm anal retentive. I don't want it to get any dings in it if I accidentally drop it, or my two year old does.
But dammit - I want my phone to be naked!! (I silently scream to myself).
Do you, good reader, silently scream to yourself? Am I alone in this quandary? Please, share.

Did your wife set you on hold ?
If so, take a snickers.
You could always use a full-body protector in place of a case. Not quite as protective, but allows the beauty to come through.
BTW, I suffer the same over-protective condition.
Better yet OEM's could just make it so that the back and side bezel is one piece so that we could just replace the entire phone back easily... There is one phone I can think of like this and I was so happy to see the design just wish more oem's would do it

OP, you've expressed pretty much exactly why I was scanning the accessories sub-forum: trying to see how many people make it without a screen protector and/or case. Actually, I really don't mind the thin Diztronic TPU case I have, but I am really itching to remove the screen protector. I sold older phones (Hero, Evo, Photon, Rezound) as "mint" without using a screen protector, but since I got this GS3 last fall, I've read so many posts about how much easier this screen scratches that I haven't been able to bring myself to remove it. But I'm so very tempted...

Well I'm glad I'm not alone. I, too, have a diztronic TPU which is fine - but, as I'm sure you know, holding the phone in your hand without it is so nice! Regarding the screen - I have used the tech armor HD and one's that resist fingerprint via Amazon. They are fine - and so inexpensive PLUS they offer lifetime guarantee and great customer service that I'm relatively happy. I've also used the Zagg HD which is fair. And I *E$*$**#*# HATE Zagg as a company and I could do an entire separate post on how little I think of them.
Despite the rant, my phone remains protected.
On a side note, despite the TPU - there are two bizarre little stellate / starburst defects on the back cover. It's hard to call them scratches or cracks.
Anyway, what usually happens is that I have the phone long enough that eventually I say screw it and enjoy it for some time. That's what I did with my DINC.

I'll give the tech armor HD a try, seems reasonable at $6.95 -- I'm still rocking the one that came with the Diztronic case (maybe that's part of my problem).
That sucks about your back cover, but luckily those can be replaced fairly cheaply, especially if you have that Samsung 50% discount.
And yeah, I did the same thing with the Evo, ripped the screen protector off after about a month and never looked back; but I always have a TPU, I need that lip over the screen because of incurable clumsiness.
I, too, have the Diztronic Matte Blue TPU and applied the screen protector it came with it. I, too, scanned through this subforum and googled whether I could do without the case. Several times. Even looked for excuses to do so.
I finally decided I need to have it on.
I use a beautiful luxury 'suncase' leather pouch, fits beautifully, very thick meaning it a protected but I still get to hold it as samsung intended. Just be careful not to drop it (which I haven't for the last 3 phones) Can't see the point in covering the phone up unless you work in a hostile environment.

I may ditch my diztronic in lieu of a full body film protection like bestskinsever or zagg. For me, the biggest concern with using the phone naked is the fact that it's really slippery in my hand, so these films would provide much better grip. I think that's the closest I'll get to being able to use my phone naked.
They only way i use my phone naked is with the spigen back cover, its matte black. Looks gray with the flash

If you want a semi-naked phone get the Ultra Slim Covers by Samsung.
I have the translucent one on my marble white S3 and when you hold the phone it's almost like it has nothing on it
My OCD probably kicks in, I just cant handle a brand new phone with my bare hands. I even use a microfiber cloth to cover it till I get a scratch guard and a case, which is the very 2nd day I get the phone.
I usually spend a lot on cases.
Just got a S3 and this is the cover I got for it.

Oh man, good luck! Please keep us updated, I will be following your progress carefully.
I used to have an otterbox on my s3 but then it became too hard to change the battery when it dies (I have spares) so I picked up one of those soft rubber cases. Works like a charm, and does protect the phone and makes it so it doesnt slide over the table. I also went from the really good flexible screen protectors to the more solid matte ones that dont use the solvent. What a difference a matte protector makes, cant live without it!
i use the phone without any protectors. no screen protect nor case.
everything is ok its still like on its first day :laugh:
I honestly trusted the " unscratchable gorilla glass " scheme.. :banghead: I'm using an otterbox commuter case without a screen protector and I have had my GS3 since April... there is about 3 GOOD scratches that are obviously visible when the screen isn't clean.. when I clean the screen though, it just makes me cringe to see the scratches.. Possibly from my nails unknowingly running across the screen and I do have dry hands/fingers so maybe that could also be a culprit to this conflict.. but really? I didn't expect scratches to show up this soon on this phone.. Especially knowing how much I paid for it. Other than that though, I love my GS3.

This is the regular gloss ghost armor, the stuff they stock at their mall kiosks. As you can see from the photos it makes the rear of the device very glossy, and also makes the blacks look deeper. I just got this put on a couple hours ago so there's still a bit of haze visible on the screen. I like the way the screen feels better naked, so I might strip off the ghost armor there but I'll give it a couple days. The "orange peel" look visible in the photo of the back has a lot to do with it being so new. Ghost Armor has much less orange peel than the Zagg invisibleShield product, and it's also much less sticky.
On top of the obvious scratch protection for the plastic, ghost armor makes it grippy enough that you don't worry about it slipping out of your hands while holding it. Since I live in a city and spend lots of time walking places or on the bus, I'm usually surrounded by very dangerous hard surfaces, so I've been paranoid about dropping it since purchase a couple days ago.
Fitment in the charging dock is fine, just requiring the slightest press to engage. My dock is still pretty tight so that might be part of it. If anyone is interested I can go venture down to the parking garage to see how it fits in the car dock.
If any of you haven't heard of Ghost Armor before, I'm told they have professional installers at some Best Buy locations. They're based in Phoenix AZ, where I was living the last few years, so I grew accustomed to going to any local mall to get new gadgets protected. They offer matte finish armor as well as some carbon fiber skins (for certain devices). The matte armor is perfect for MacBook Pros, the backs of iPads, and any other metals. It looks quite striking on white iPhones as well. Here in Seattle there's only one location I can recommend, at Northgate Mall (a quick bus trip north from downtown). They do a great job with the installations. It's quite sad, I've only lived here two months and I'm on a first name basis with the staff.
Very interesting. Thanks for your insight.
Cool man. I've got a ZaggSkin in my Atrix, some rocker squeleton
Thanks anyway, it's good to know there's some alternatives to Zagg stuff

I didn't clean it up before taking photos, so that is with handling. Due to the fake carbon fibre print on the back of the Atrix, you wouldn't really notice smudges if they were there. Fingerprints on the screen, well of course. I haven't seen anything that fingerprints less than my Palm Pre 2 oddly enough, but it's not bad. Wipe the screen on your pants (no need to worry about scratching) and it's good as new.
I have BodyGuardz on my atrix.
BodyGuardz is thinner than InvisibleShield, and feel more smooth.
Personally, I still prefer InvisibleShield, which is thicker, and have more grip on it.
I have used other kind before, so I cannot tell the feeling about others.

extremely difficult to get it anywhere near as perfect as in my photos. That was installed by a professional. They do dozens of installs daily, and if they screw up they have lots of pre-cut film in stock to try again.
If it's not perfect, aside from looking like junk you'll have edges that peel and that sort of thing so it won't last long.
Thanks _kansei_ for the post and the photos. The reason I bought Zagg/Skinomi Is because of the whole "same military technology used on helicopter blades" thing, and the video where they take a dremel to the iPad. I just checked GA website and they are do use the same "military technology" as Zagg and Skinomi. So the protection should be the same, its almost the same product just slightly tweaked by a different company. Truthfully I can barely tell a difference between my Zagg & Skinomi. But now that we know there is a third manufacturer, it would be awesome to have a thread gauging the slight differences between these 3 similar products like "orange peal", ease of installation, thickness, grip/slide, etc..
I've seen firsthand "phantom skinz" as well. Seemed like a slightly thinner material, with virtually no orange peel.
There's dozens of companies selling what is basically the same product. When they say "military tech", I think they just mean "well the military puts a film on helicopter blades, so we can call our plastic film military grade too".
I already removed the film from the screen, as I thought i probably would. I'm not worried about dropping the atrix now that the body is more grippy, and my primary worry was scratching up the plastic back since i leave it sitting on my desk at work a lot.
An objective comparison of all the films would be very tough, you'd have to get a bunch of people together with the same device with all the different films. Photos could show the differences in orange peel look, but thickness would be tough to measure with the skin on.
Yes a comparison would be tough, but probably not as tough as some of the battery comparisons I have seen floating around here. Truthfully, the main thing I care about is protection, after watching the Zagg dremel video I was hooked, I want that level of protection in all my screen protectors. Maybe I am taking a leap here, but thats what I associate with the phrase "military tech". My train of thought is: 'This is the same military tech that will withstand a dremel on your screen.' Haha. Maybe thats just Zagg, I dunno..
These look awesome. Has anyone had success installing any of these by themselves? It seems like the type of thing my spastic self would not be able to do. I barely got a normal screen protector on...
Definitely tempted to order it and try it out though.

I would suggest watching someone do it at least once so you know what to expect. The first time I tried I failed miserably, I ended up having it done at Best Buy (by a "professional"). After I saw it done once and seen the tools used and how, it wasn't that hard. I have done two myself since (front screen only). I suggest soaking your fingers in the "solution" (its water I think), the more solution you use on your hands the better imo. I would say be generous with the solution on the screen protector itself during installation as well. I even aply a thin layer on the screen. Make sure you have a rag and be fast to dab up the excess solution immediately. Get the bubbles out. Leave it sit for at least an hour to dry. Those are my tips how I do it, everybody may not agree with the excess solution and I will be the first to say water and electronics dont mix so be careful!

It is not that hard as you think, to prevent dust, you could creat a humidy environment, such as turn on hot water in your bath, and let the steam build up. I did mine this way, and look pretty good.

Ghost armor is the same way with the warranty. Replacement film is always free, you just pay the installation. So if you have to get the phone replaced under warranty you just peel the film off and bring them the film and the new device.

That's why I had to get out of the southwest, even living downtown in a "big city" (Phoenix) everything was so far away. Hardly anything was within walking distance, cycling was an unsafe mess, it was all cars cars cars. I had to take the bus all the way to the nearest Best Buy (ghost armor was right by it), because there isn't one downtown. They put it all the way up by a mall north of the city. Just checked gmaps, it was 7 miles. <3 it here for that.
3.5 hours is totally not worth it though. If you have a Best Buy close to you, they may have a ghost armor installer in the store.
This is a review of a case made by TPU-cases.com of their Matte back black case.
TPU-cases.com: http://tpu-cases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=36&products_id=147
1st impression:
I received the case prior to getting my Epic 4G Touch, and after opening it up and taking a brief look, I was rather impressed by the case. The materials used are good quality and it looks well made. Initially I did notice that the surface of the case is a little slippery, but its nothing too bad. Overall I had a very good 1st impression of the case.
There was a screen protector included but I fail pretty badly trying to put those on. I normally don't use a screen protector on my phones, but I wanted to give it a try for the sake of review purposes and I was unable to get it installed correctly. This may be user error, but it looks like it may be a combo of an error of mine and the screen protector... it was addressed here by the owner of TPU-cases, OneStepAhead.
After I got the phone:
I received my Epic 4G Touch at 10am on the 16th, launch day. After getting everything set up and activated through Sprint, I installed the case before leaving the store. I was very impressed at how well the case fit, it was a perfect fit. Installation was very easy as well, I had zero trouble getting the case on properly.
One thing I noticed about the phone is that the camera on the back was going to come in contact with whatever surface you lay the phone on. I noticed that right away and was instantly hoping the case would solve that issue, and it did. When you install the case, it sets the camera back in a little so that the lens of the camera doesn't make contact with the surface, which I loved. Also on the front of the phone, the case provides a small lip around the whole phone, which provides a little protection for your screen if you were to set it on a table with the screen down. Overall this helps protect your phone and TPU-cases did a good job.
When I was trying to decide on getting a case for this phone, I was worried about the case taking away the benefit of the thinness of the device, which was a main selling point of the phone for me. I was pleasantly surprised that this case doesn't add much thickness at all, its only very minor and it still preserves the overall slim profile of the device, which is great.
I was also wondering about use of the ports and buttons on the phone with the case being there. The headphone jack, power button, micro usb port, and microphone are all easily accessible and unaffected. I did plug a Samsung headphone into the 3.5mm headphone jack without a problem. The power button is easy to press and is uncovered. There is no problem plugging the micro usb in to charge... the speaker and microphone is uncovered as well.
The only small downside to this case is the volume rocker. When I press the volume rocker to adjust the volume, you definitely have to press it a little harder than normal, and there is a cover over top of the buttons. You can still control the volume, it just is not as easy as I would like it to be. This is not anything that is going to stop me from purchasing the case, and as a whole it's pretty minor to me.
Pictures:
I took 4 pictures to hopefully show the points I've made in this review for you all. I apologize is the quality of the pictures isn't great, it was taken with another cell phone camera as I was taking pictures of the new phone. If anyone would like additional pictures of the case I'd be happy to take them.

Conclusion:
As a whole, this case I got from TPU-cases.com is great, and I'd highly recommend taking a look. The value you get for a very small price is awesome and I will be buying more cases from them (I like to change cases from time to time). Thank you TPU-cases for providing a great product. I give TPU-cases a 9/10 and the only point taken away is for the volume rocker.
If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer.

ordered one today
i just ordered one these today and am looking forward to receiving the case soon.
I ordered the smoke matte translucent model. Can't wait!
That looks great! My smoke case is in the mail. Can't wait to get it, my phone is nakey lol. From your review, ill definitely be buying more colors
Yeah I am very happy with the case, hope you all enjoy yours
I like the TPU case too and I will get one first as soon as I get my phone from letstalk, grrrrrr.
Eventually I want a casemate barely-there cause I prefer hard shell...but these are excellent cases, especially for the money.
I have one for my Evo and I too can't wait for an ET4G version

I haven't dropped it yet, but just going off the case itself, I think it would survive a normal drop. I'm not sure about a 10 foot drop onto concrete or worse, but I'd imagine it would stand up ok for most drops. The material used to make it is very flexible but sturdy on the phone. My only concern for drops would be the screen, and if it was dropped on an angle like a curb.
Yeah, that's my biggest concern. I guess it's better than going naked. I dropped my Evo and cracked it corner to corner. That was a bad day.

Yeah I saw that, must be pretty popular choice. Hope they get more in soon for ya.
Thanks for this! Glad to hear you are happy with the case. I don't know if anyone mentioned it in this thread, but the screen protectors we included are not cut properly. They are cut to the exact size of the glass which makes them near if not impossible to install without the edges peeling up. I'll be sending replacement screen protectors to those that request them once I receive the fixed ones. It's disappointing, it's the first time we included screen protectors with our cases and the first time using this screen protector supplier. Live and learn I guess. Please don't send me messages about the screen protector yet, I'll post something about it here and on our website closer to the time I'll have replacements. For the time being I've just removed any mention of the cases coming with screen protectors so future customers wont have any expectations of receiving one with their case (although they still will receive one).

This is the 2nd time making the matte cases, the first time we did it for the Evo 3D after receiving a ton of requests for. They ended up not selling very well though. I think I had 500 of the matte black made for Evo 3D and I still have 1/2 of them 6 weeks later. The Epic 4G Touch on the other hand I sold out of 500 before the phone was even released! I'm telling people 9/23 but I actually think they will be in on Tuesday or Wednesday. Sorry for the inconvenience.
The 3D just was a bad draw. If you had made some for the OG evo you probably would have seen better numbers. I am going to guess the ones for the ET4G will fly off the shelves and I can't wait to get my case
Edit: Some of your products have Prime shipping while others don't. Just curious on why that is because I have a Prime account hahaha
i ordered the high gloss black from amazon. anyone have opinions on high gloss? or should i cancel and get matte black or the high gloss translucent

That screen protector thing had me puzzled for a while, it all makes sense now.
So I've just placed an order for a Ghost Armor full body skin for my Tmo SGS2 Hercules and this thread is to post a review once I get it!
For those not aware of Ghost Armor, its a wet application screen/body protector that in my opinion is one of the best. I had it on my Nexus S which at one point was in a sweatshirt pocket when I happened to slip on some ice and as phones seem wont to do, it flew out of my pocket and landed screen down on the pavement about 10 feet in front of me. There was not a scratch on the screen nor a crack. Later, while sitting in a recliner my phone slipped out of my pocket and into the mechanics of the chair (without my knowledge). When I put down the foot stool and realized my phone was no longer in my pocket I lifted up the chair and the phone fell out. This time there was damage...to the screen protector; a MASSIVE gash from where one of the mechanisms in the chair had scraped against it. To my amazement the screen was undamaged.
Now that my own little Ghost Armor history is up I'll post a few pictures from the website to give you an idea.

The available finishes for the full body protectors are Black Carbon, Gun Metal Carbon, and White Carbon (the website says you can get a matte one as well but the guy at the kiosk I went to said that the matte ones don't adhere very well to battery covers like ours so he wouldn't apply one). I ordered the White Carbon and will be getting it applied on Friday morning.
For reference, you can buy the screen only protector for $14.99+s/h&tax on the website and the full body kit for $24.99+s/h&tax on the website but if you go to a kiosk to get it installed by someone who knows what they're doing the full body kit'll run you a hefty $42.
~~~~~~~~~~What a long week its been! Jeez! This morning I finally went and got my Ghost Armor applied and DAMN does it look sexy. Below are a few pictures:
Review
So to start with, I got the White Carbon skin which I find to be massively smexy. The first thing I noticed is that unlike on my Nexus S, the edges of the protector along the sides are not very sharp and are actually pretty comfortable to hold in your hand. The second thing I noticed was that the claim that this will improve grip isn't necessarily true; don't get me wrong, this doesn't make the phone slippery or anything of the sort. The back just isn't quite as sticky as the soft-touch back, however, the sides are much more grippy than the standard chrome bezel.
The biggest issue people have with screen protectors though is not how it looks on the back of the phone or how grippy they are: its the screen, so lets get to that. First off, without even turning the phone on it is MASSIVELY hard to tell there is even a protector on. You can see a feint outline that extends very nearly from the top bezel to the bottom bezel. There is a cutout at the top for the speak and thats really it. Even the capacitive buttons are covered (they do not however seem any less responsive to me). Aside from the outline, the first you'll notice the screen protector is on is when you touch the screen; it doesn't feel as … glass-like. I have very calloused fingers (having been a guitar-player for over ten years) so its hard for me to quantify what it feels like but it doesn't have that slippery glass-like feeling of the new screen.
It doesn't feel cheap either though, and thats nice. Really thats all there is to say. The screen still looks down right beautiful and remains very responsive. I'm super stoked about this protector and I think it was well worth the money.
Suspenseful for you?! I'm the one waiting to get the damn stuff on my phone!
Seriously though, I noticed that no one had brought up ghost armor and I wanted to get awareness out. I'm about 99.99999999999999999% my review will be "Zoh EM GEE GUIZ! DIS STUFFS IS SCHWEET!" because of my past experience but mostly its going to be about the pictures I take of the stuff on my phone
are you talking about the one that has the stand? Those are made out of really cheap material. They crack and chip easily. I put one on my phone and when I tried to take it off, it chip the corner then later on I decided to return it so I take it off the phone again and it chip on the other corner. I was very care when I tried to remove it but it still chip.
Had my SG2 for less than a week and while walking across a parking lot, it slipped from my hand and fell about three feet and landed face down. Long story short, screen shattered. I had the Ghost Armor on my Vibrant and the screen never shattered when it fell from higher distances. Needless to say, got my replacement phone and it's going to get the Armor screen this weekend.
Had ghost armour on my nexus s also only on the screen though was running for a bus flew out my pocket onto concrete pavement. Crack wasnt to bad was still usable thank god because I was on vacation. It kept everything intact
Ive had ghost Armour on every phone in the last year and screen protectors are really good and the carbon fiber added a nice black look to my sensation rather than the ugly brown. I really want to see the white one waiting for the kiosk at my mall to get one so I can get one for free. benefits of being an employee for cell phone stores lol
Can someone link the site info? Id like more pictures and literature.
I have ghost armor on my ipad and love it. I was gonna go with the white carbon this time around for my s2. But I chose the phantomskin chromatics in pearl white instead. One I get it I'll try to write a review. I kinda wanted an extra battery door like they had for my vibrant. So I don't lose the galaxy s II.
Ok that was a fail. lol. lets try again...
I got mine done at a mall kiosk... Payed $22, looks like its not even on the screen... I'm really happy with it
I got mine ghost armored a the mall, but the kid working there was obviously new and botxched the whole job. I just got the sides and screen done in clear. The sides were overlapping on the button and the screen was cut off early at the bottom. I refused to pay for it. Can someone that has applied it themselves post if it is the actual product that is disproportionate or if the guy that applied it was just a moron?
That's weird i got $5 dollars off. Oh well money off is always a good thing. Your welcome
Heading to the mall today to get the screen protector done at the kiosk. I called ahed to confirm they had them for the GSII as well that they have done the installs on this phone and good to go on all accounts. I'm just hoping this screen protector doesn't raise up at all once the D30 case is put back on like it does with my current T-Mobile pos screen protector
I'll try to post some pictures once it's on as well as any comments. I've always used Zagg before so we'll see how the Ghost Armor sp stacks up.
After having tried several different screen protectors and cases here's what I've discovered.
Most of the gel cases turn rather yellowish (though there are a few that don't). Obviously the grippy feel will be there. The downside to that feel in my opinion would be when sliding your phone in and out of your pocket. I personally hate having to 'force' it down my pocket. I'm a heavy multi tasker so I'd have my iPod in my other hand with perhaps a book/newspaper (with headphones cable tangled all around) and my phone in the other. So keeping that in mind I love to whip out the phone and also likewise slide it out of sight rather quickly. The grippy feel is beneficial to prevent me from dropping the phone but I simply don't like it.
Following the above, my thoughts on 'full body protectors' are similar. They all have that tacky feel to them. From back in the day with my HTC myTouch 4G & LG Nitro I've tried Zagg, BestSkinsEver, BodyGuardz (my favourite), and Skinomi and I'd say they all simply peel. I cannot stress that enough. Regardless of the matte effect or absence of the tacky feel these protectors simply peel after lots of use around the corners. They do save the phone from drops because they do absorb the dents in a way. But nonetheless, they are 'temporary' in my opinion.
As for screen protectors I've found myself to prefer the Skinomi & BodyGuardz. It's because I found that these ones are missing the 'orange peel effect' and also the matte BodyGuardz is nice to the touch. The Skinomi was a little tacky and had a few streaks/lines but these disappear.
And back to the cases. The one I fell in love with was the one I got on eBay from smokeydiscount (mentioned elsewhere). I bought that case since it was cheap and so that I could use it temporarily until I got a better case. But just as several other members have said, it's actually quite nice.. It grips the phone well and taking it off is an absolute b*tch. It has a frosted aspect to it and isn't fully see through. But from a feet away you'd swear the phone didn't have a case on it. It's really minimalistic.
As per the screen protector that I decided on I went with the Spigen Glas.tr and it DOES work with the buttons as long as you're running the latest firmware. Even if you weren't (like I did initially) DON'T rip it off immediately. You can still download a ROM to your SD card, boot into Recovery and you'll notice the Recovery works fine under the glass. Then proceed to install the ROM and bam, all is perfect and fine.
The red skin I have was a little addition to give it a little flare and personality. It was also to follow with the red Beats branding (even though I hate Beats). But coupled with a red system theme and I'm in love with my current setup. I didn't use all the included skins and only used the top and bottom pieces. It was the red leather skin off eBay (I'll add the links later).
I attached pictures of my phone so you can have a look at what I've finally decided on.
EDIT:
I have added the following links for the accessories I'm using that are available for purchase. I have also added bigger images so the case can be seen more clearly. The thumbnails on XDA were resized and a lot of clarity was lost since I used PNG. It appears using JPEG doesn't fall under the max width and height restrictions so I uploaded JPEG instead to XDA.
Spigen GLAS.tR Screen Protector: http://www.spigen.com/cell-phone/ht...ctor-glas-tr-slim-premium-tempered-glass.html
I also bought some NFC cads that work really well. They are Mifare cards and are quite cheap (the cheapest I could find). Here's a linky: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/121113649220
Hahah yeah go for it! I'm still not satisfied with the front and may cut out the small speaker line. Or I may even take the front skin off. But yeah, for the back the top and bottom could be customized and so retain the middle metal plate. The color variance is subtle and nice. Glad you liked the back
yer i think it will look better cutting the middle bit out!
Im going to try putting the back skins on in abit, but i also have a invisible shield so might put that over the back then put my bumper
on over the top, see how it looks first!
Yeah, it's exactly what I did. I've been contemplating it for ages hahah. I guess you were motivation enough xD. I'll upload pics soon enough. Also good luck with yours, though I think if you put it on top of the cover it may peel. At least for mine I know the adhesive isn't the best and lots of pocket removal may cause peeling. Though that being said the front stickers are still holding up. Be sure to share pics of yours once you do it
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium HD app
I just uploaded new pictures of the new front with the sticker lines removed. I also uploaded more clear and brighter pictures of the back. The older ones were done under crappy lighting though the new ones are missing the 'Audio' part of the Beats branding simply because the case is slightly frosted and the camera I used is not the best (pictures taken with my old LG Nitro rear camera).
I also added the links to whatever I purchased and used.
I noticed many users thinking about purchasing the GLAS.tR and asking whether it will fit with the case or not. Well, as mentioned in the OP you can see I talked of how the current case grips onto the phone rather tightly. The case also curves onto the front, holding the phone nicely. And with the glass protector, there's still around a millimetre or more between the protector and the case. So I'd say it would work with if not all, most cases out there on the market. It's also not too thick. If you're going to get the GLAS.t then opt for the GLAS.tR . If it's not to your liking, switch to the GLAS.t . The beveled edges are nice, since pulling down on the menu won't bring the edge to your finger.
So I've seen a few people talking about bumper cases for the Moto X, but few people seemed to jump at them, and as far as I've seen, no pictures have been posted of the case actually ON the phone. Well, I wanted to explore some alternatives to a full case, and this would give people who use MotoMaker an alternative.
First, I purchased the case off of Amazon for $6.99 shipped. It comes in a few colors. I chose black on black. The case shipped quickly and arrived quickly via USPS.
http://www.amazon.com/Slick-Shell-P...&qid=1381544095&sr=8-3&keywords=moto+x+bumper
Please note, I only just received my Moto X and bumper case today. I haven't had a chance to activate the phone, and won't be doing so since I'm heading out shortly. Still, I need to nerd out a bit with this phone, so I'm writing a short case review. Note, however, that I can't say say if the case affects the function of the phone at all, but I highly doubt it. I will update with my thoughts once I get the thing activated.
Overall impressions: The case is quite nice. Minimal, provides protection for the corners, face, and back, and looks pretty good. It appears to be matte TPU with a thin piece of hard, glossy plastic to help hold it together. Here are a few pictures of the case itself:
This first photo is just the front of the bumper case, followed by a picture from the back. As you can see, it does have a little tab. I'm not sure what this is for.
And here we have all the ports cut out of the sides of the bumper case.
The buttons on the side of the case. I've never really cared for buttons on my cases and have cut them off of every TPU case I've had. We'll see how these fair shortly...
As far as I know, the following is the first picture of a Moto X actually sitting in this case. The case slips on pretty easily but sits snugly enough that I have no concerns of it sliding off.
Here's the back. You can see the tab once more. Again, I don't know why it's there, but it, surprisingly, doesn't bother me. I also quite like the "stairstep" that the case does. Just ads a nice flow to it.
The top cutouts align as expected.
As does the bottom cutout.
A picture of the buttons. They're actually VERY well done. I'm surprised at how pleasant they are to press and how solid they feel. You'll notice that they also stick out from the rest of the case just slightly. The recess around them also helps give a nice overall feel.
Here's the phone sitting screen down. The front of the case provides protection for the entire face of the phone.
And the phone sitting on its back to give you an idea of how far the case extends above the screen.
Finally, here's a picture from the side of the phone sitting on its back. From what I can tell, the back of the phone just BARELY sits above the table. I believe (although I can't tell for certain) that the case is the only thing making contact with the table. This seems like it should protect the back of the phone from scratches if it's sitting with the back down, but I can't be completely certain. I'd still do my best to avoid sliding the phone on its back just to be safe.
Conclusion: The case fits very well with properly aligned cutouts, looks quite nice, and seems to provide all of the protection that I wanted. It extends past the screen to protect it if the phone is face down, covers all sides and corners to help protect against drops, and seems to elevate the back JUST above whatever surface it's sitting on (I am not positive on this last statement though). It looks good, feels good, and allows you to enjoy the feel of the back of the phone and that Moto X dimple. If you have a MotoMaker version, this is probably the best way to show it off and keep it protected in my opinion.
As I said, I haven't actually USED the phone with the case on since I haven't had the time to activate it yet. I will be doing so tomorrow or Sunday (tomorrow's a busy day), and I will come back with any important updates.
If anybody wants to know anything more about the case or see different pictures, please ask and I'll see what I can do to provide what you're looking for. It just might take me a day or two, so check back.
Great review and thanks
wow thank you so much for this! I've been trying to find a good bumper case since I have a motomaker-made X, and this post has a ton of great info! A few requests:
Do you plan on removing the covers for the buttons? I would really like my purple ones to shine through, but I'm not sure how it'd work with a case like this...
once you've used the phone a bunch, do you think you could comment on how it feels with vs without the case? I really like the way this phone feels naked, but it's also very smooth and prone to slipping... does the case help with that?
thanks so much and welcome to the X-Zone! Enjoy your new phone!
Thanks OP for this much needed information!
The last picture seems to suggest that the curved back makes the bumper less protective...from what I can see, the phone sits on the table, not the bumper. Nevertheless, the bumper does provide some needed protection.
I also ordered one after days of hesitation. Mainly I ordered a gold skin from DBrand and really wanted to show-off will remember to post the pictures once I have both of them on the phone.
Here is the blue one on white moto x.
I have this case and while I really like it, I have gone back to another because the buttons stick out so much that I keep bumping them. I have to really pay attention when i put it in my pocket that i don't turn it on. This may be silly, but it is a change from the other cases I've had.
I wonder how well it would fit if I cut out the buttons.......hmmmm
I really do like the fact that you can see the back and feel it. Especially the moto bump
Having used the phone for a day and a half now with the case, I don't see myself removing the buttons. They have a great feel in my opinion, and I actually really like that they're slightly raised. I haven't had the issue that chrisomnia1 mentioned of accidentally turning the screen on when putting it in my pocket. If they were removed, I don't know how well this case would work given how flat the buttons are. That said, I had a TPU case for my Galaxy Nexus for which I cut out the volume buttons. They were recessed relative to the rest of the case, but I had no problems using them. It's basically a question of whether you want to spend $7 to find out.
I won't be using it much without the case, so I can't really comment on this in the long term. Although I'm cautious, I've dropped phones a few times and don't want to risk it naked. As for a quick opinion, as with all phones, it feels better without the case. I like that I can still feel the back of the phone though, as it feels much nicer than TPU cases. However, it is NOT a grippy case. I wouldn't say it's slippery, but I don't think it provides any increase in grip. If you're looking to increase the grippiness of the phone, this is not the case to do that.
thanks so much and welcome to the X-Zone! Enjoy your new phone!
You're welcome, and I definitely am enjoying it!
The bumper cases scare me to some degree.
1. With a white Moto X - the back gets dirty quickly. Looks like a put pine tar on my phone.
2. In the first few days I went naked, I picked up several chips/scrapes in the soft plastic on the back - this after having babied it waiting for my TPU case to arrive.
Gnex or S3 without a case (covering the back) - sure thing, replacement backs are a dime a dozen. Moto X without a case - not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent.
just got my black/red one and i love it! really great because it shows off the black in the front and the white in the back (developers edition)
real zaebis !
I like the MotoX naked, but my hands are kinda big, and coming from a GNexus--this phone is pretty small. I was looking for a way to slightly increase the size, mainly the width. Does this bumper fulfill that need?
Yes. I like it. In not a fan of cases, but this gives a decent amount of protection without compromising the design.
There's a new case listed on the motomaker website, AirJacket Grip case (made by PowerSupport). Comes in a variety of moto maker colors. Anyone tried that yet? All accessories on sale @30% off through Motorola site as well
I ordered one. $30 shipped. A bit pricey, but I have been needing a case, and hoping this is the case I've been waiting for.
It increases the width of the moto x by about like 0.25 in
Yes, I saw that and was interested in it at first glance, but, in the spirit of the topic at hand (bumper cases), it sadly isn't what I would consider to be a true bumper due to the clear back. But it's great it exists and that we have the equivalent of a Ringke Hybrid Fusion case for the X!
It's sad but it looks like the Moto G is going to be getting real bumper treatment (Motorola Grip Shells). I really hope they make some for the X too:
Pulled the trigger on this case... I like the Moto X naked but just want the screen raise so I can set it screen down with out scratching... ya I already have one in the dead center of the screen that I hope I can buff out. I HATE screen protectors.
I think you should try some glass ones, they provide protection and you can barely tell that they're actually there.
I ordered the bumper from the op and I love it. I did cut off the tab on the back. Not sure what purpose it served but its gone now and looks better
