[Q] weak coverage killing my battery Help? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I direct a summer camp in the summer and now that I've moved out to my summer location I have absolutely the worst data coverage at my camp. All throughout my campground my phone data switches from 4g to edge to no data depending on where I'm literally standing. I think that has been plummeting my battery life so I'm trying to find some best solutions. I'm currently running Intergalactic Rom which has giving me great battery life before I moved out here to camp.
1. Should I consider another rom such as a asop/aokp or does it matter?
2. I already tried locking my band selection to just edge but I can't receive phone calls when I do that. Is that a matter of having the right APN's? Right now my APN only shows the ATT Phone settings?
3. Does having the right combination of kernel settings, modems, etc.. make a difference too?
I would appreciate any help or feedback
Thanks

Turn off your data and see if that makes a difference. There are several apps out there that will let you switch it on off through a widget. I think one was something like aon on off, just a toggle.

will this affect whether i receive text messages or not?

No. Phone calls and texts will not be affected. MMS require data, though.

My 2g speed or edge is pretty sufficient. But I tested it out and I was able to place phone calls but not receive them. Is that a matter of configuring the right apn's and if i do stay on edge does that affect test messaging or mms?
Thanks again

How to turn 3G off & only be on Edge??

I love 3g, but after one week on Edge only, and therefore with great battery life, I get off the plane in London and 4hrs later my battery is rub down.
I really do not need 3G, the speed difference for push email is irrelevant...
So any clues how to do this for those of us happy with good old gprs?
The search system is your friend... Check the main Hermes forum.

You can change the band the phone uses, its in phone>options>network(tab)
(i think)
just choose the appropriate band for GSM .

Wow. You get four hours? I'm lucky to get three in 3G mode with instant push enabled. I finally decided that I can live with getting email every 15 minutes and having my battery last 10 hours.

Search Google or the forums for "Hermes BandSwitch" -- click on the link for Comm Mgr Pro, then the link for BandSwitch (but check out Comm Mgr Pro, too).
BandSwitch is the easiest tool for switching between 3G and GSM. Some OS versions have a "Band" tab in the Phone Options screen, but most do not (a lot of operators don't want people screwing with that because they can charge more for 3G). If you have a Band tab, you can force it to GSM -- but only if you don't have an open data connection (it's kind of tricky to kill the connection and get into the options to change the settings -- and it won't let you change them while your radio is off).
What I did was to get the phone in an area where it gets no signal, then go into the phone, options, band, and take it off 3G or auto, and put it to GSM, should work.
AM
Bandswitch
For me, Bandswitch is an absolute no-brainer app to install on your phone. Very quick and easy switching your phone from GMS to 3G to Auto Select .. all from the today screen. It is always the first app install after every re-flash or hard reset of my phone ... as I tend to keep my phone on GSM most of the time to save battery life, and only if I am in a 3G area and know I will need to make tons of calls do I switch back to 3G (so I can send/receive email and chat at the same time).
If you have not checked out this app (see link above) I highly recommend it.

[HOW-TO] Get a Data Signal While Roaming

Background:
Ever since I've had this phone I couldn't get a data signal while roaming in areas where I knew one was available. Old phones would get data while roaming without a problem.
The Epic Touch would just give a notification saying "you have lost data connectivity" or something.
I understand certain Sprint roaming areas just plain don't have data available. This howto can not fix that.
What this howto does help you do is get a data signal while roaming in areas where a roaming data signal is available.
Credit:
This was apparently discovered by someone on the sprint forums, and I found a reference to it on the Android Central forums, so I do not know who credit goes to for discovering this.
What to Do:
It's best if you are in a roaming-only area to test this, or if you can force roaming. You'll also need to be on the stock kernel (rooted is fine) so you have the ability to update your Profile.
Let's do that now. Go to the Settings menu and tap About Phone - system updates - update profile and wait for it to complete, then tap ok.
From the home screen, tap Menu - Settings - Wireless and Networks - Roaming - Roaming Settings.
Un-check all options here (voice and data for both domestic and international)
With no boxes checked, tap the "Data" box under domestic roaming. Tap only this one, not voice.
You will get a box asking you to confirm. Click yes. This will then automatically enable voice as well.
Another pop up with a red box will ask if you really want to use data while roaming. At this point you can tell it to never ask again and click Roam.
Now you can use data while roaming where it's available!
Update:
after trying this multiple times to verify it works, occasionally the final pop-up with the red box disappears before you can read it. I was able to long press the home button to show recent apps, then tap the "Data Roaming Guard" app. Then I could tap Roam.
This is critical for me as sometimes I am in roaming areas for work and I need internet and this phone is the only access I have. Now I can use it!
Report back with any corrections or feedback. Mileage may vary.
I don't know if it's necessary to update the profile. I have that step in there because that is the sequence I used. If you try it without updating the profile, let me know. This would allow people on a custom kernel to do this too.
I spent an hour and a half with Sprint yesterday on the phone trying to resolve this. They turned me over to new reps three times (including to the international support department) each one not aware of my issue so I'd have to explain everything again.
Finally I started digging on the web and found the tip on AC. Took me 2 minutes.
DOH! Stupid Tapatalk.
Mods, please move to General. Didn't mean to start this in development.
Thanks for sharing this. I will try this out.

I have the same issues. My girlfriend has an EVO and she will have data while roaming, and I wont. Even if were right next to each other.
Thanks, this worked great for me & did not have to update profile. I am on stock rooted deodexed rom.
Worked for me! Thanks, that was very annoying!
thanks! now i can play wwf at work lol
I did this awhile back when I saw it on the AC forums. I also read this phone cannot roam on PCS networks because of a limitation in the radio so there still may be times it won't roam when other phones will.
Greetings All!
I was able to make roaming calls before; but I followed these instructions and now I can use roaming data as well. Fortunately Atlanta is a pretty good 4G metro area so I rarely need to use roaming data. Usually either 3G or 4G is available. Nonetheless it's nice to have the option.
FYI I forced roaming by using the Roam Control app and have verified that for the first time with this phone I have a nonzero "Sprint 3G Data Roaming" entry in the detailed usage screen on the Sprint website.
Many thanks!
Cheers, Henri
Ok, glad this is working for people! I know it was the biggest gripe I had about the phone by far.

[Q]Force gsm nexus to automatically switch to 2G sooner in low reception area?

i noticed that i get much better 2g reception in my house than 3g so would it be possible to set the galaxy nexus to make the switch to 2g sooner and automatic? im using a toggle right now but it would be nice to be able to set the point at which the phone will make the jump to 2g.
The 3g signal is so weak in certain areas that i dont lose the signal but i wont be able to receive calls and goes straight to voicemail but the annoying thing is that sometimes the phone doesnt make the jump to 2g. Im using the mod in aokp to see my signal in dBm instead of the bars and have found the difference is -111 to -113dBm for 3G and under -100dBm for 2G in the same spot. i would like to be able to set the phone to make to jump to 2G when the 3G signal is weaker than -110dBm for example.
anyone? do we know how the phone decides when to switch to 2g?
Why don't you just keep manually toggling it as needed? Problem solved. That said goto YouTube and watch the everything is amazing but nobody is happy video.
And remember kids. Your smartphone is not a pacifier.

cause it would be easier if it did it automatically like its suppose to. if i forget to toggle the 2g everytime i home then i miss a call in the house? this is a phone we're talking about im not asking for anything special just for it to work like its suppose to.

Exactly. Couldn't have said it better myself. Now I need to go start a thread asking how come my phone won't clean my room. Ç'mon it's a smartphone.
iphone. helping computer illiteracy become popular since 2007.
receiving calls and making calls is not something special for a 700 dollar phone. this is the first phone i got that has this kind of trouble switching between 2g and 3g. go troll somehwere else if you have nothing helpful to add.
Seriously what is so hard about manually toggling your phone to 2g at home? I have to do it occasionally still even though 3g isn't the juice sucker it used to be a few years ago. Another alternative is to get a micro cell but I an sure you don't want to pay ~$200 and $20 a month. There are apps that will do the 2g toggle when you're on your home wifi. Nfc tag might be able to do it too. It seems you want somebody to write an app specifically for your "problem".
iphone. helping computer illiteracy become popular since 2007.
you're really not getting it, its not about a toggle and im not asking anyone to make an app so i dont have to use the toggle. im not talking about switching to 2g to save battery or data but when the 3g is weak or isnt there and there is a stronger 2g signal available. i am using a toggle right now but thats not a solution. this is a phone, i shouldnt have to toggle anything to make calls. All my previous android phones stayed in 2g 90% of the time in my house all by themselves.
Phones are suppose to be able to switch between 2g and 3g when 3g is not available or is too weak, the galaxy nexus is not doing that properly it hangs at 3g even to the point where it drops the signal and there's always is a good 2g signal that it should be going to. i have no 2g deadspots in my house but a few for 3g.
i've tried all the radios and they all have this problem some worst than others. i was just thinking if there is a way to mod the phone so that it will switch to 2g sooner or faster
And I am telling you to do it manually to solve your issue. You still want it done faster automatically and nobody here is going to be able to mod a radio for you. Aside from aaaaaaaall the barriers prohibiting devs from doing so, there is just plain and simple the issue of it actually transferring from 2 to 3 and 3 to 2, handshaking with the tower which is not instaneous. Like I said watch that video and get a grip and laugh. The best and fastest solution is manually. I have to do it myself occasionally for different reasons. If you don't like having to do something manually because you have a $700 smartphone then all I can tell you is good luck with the rest of your life.

i looked into this some more and it turns out there is a setting that can do exactly what i want but is disabled in the new 4.0.4 update. in the *#*#4636*#*# menu you can set network preferred type to gsm auto prl which will only switch to 3g if there is a strong signal and will favor 2g. With the new update(4.0.4) the setting cannot be changed and is stuck on wcdma preferred which is the opposite of gsm auto prl, favors 3g over 2g. hopefully this can be fixed somehow so that the network settings can be changed.

I'd stay out of that menu on nexus. It has caused many a problem for gnex owners, one which is it automatically goes back to default setting no matter what you select and erasing smsc number randomly. Toggling 2g in settings or getting a 2g/3g toggle in power control is fastest and easiest solution still.

[Q] Bell Canada i747m losing connection

hey gang i'm running the latest aokp task650 build on my S3 I747m. Everything works awesome, except i occasionally lose my data connection. I'll notice my connection status bars are gray, and typically a reboot will fix it. I'm sure going into airplane mode and back out from that would re-establish the connection too.
my APN is set correctly, i compared it to a friends nexus which is not rooted.
Right now i'm set as pda.bell.ca
I've flashed the latest bell modem file (that i'm aware of).
Anyone have any suggestions? i'm pretty new to all of this.. not sure what to do to troubleshoot.

I've been having problems lately when I have poor 4G (LTE) signal. My phone would rather hang around on the LTE network with little to no signal before it switches over to 3G. It's been doing this for a while on the Rogers network for me. I can see when I check the battery stats just how much time is spent without signal which is a lot. At work I get full bars 3G when at my desk but very poor 4G. The only thing causing me to loose signal is the poor transition back and forth between the two networks. Changing modems has absolutely no affect on this matter and I've put the APN's and network modes through the ringer with no change either. I've tried it all and nothing improved it. When I walk outside I immediately hit full bars 4G. Just when I'm inside my work and at home, I get poor lingering 4G. I wish the thresholds for when it switches over were better. I usually just turn off LTE all together which sucks but oh well.
I don't think we are the only people with this either. I've read grumblings about others noticing the same thing.
If curious, I'm running the latest CM10.1 nightly with Ktoonsez kernel on the Rogers network in Ottawa.
Interesting, that could very well cooincide with what i'm seeing. I tend to bounce from 4G to H+ or 3G, i wonder if it's trying to hang onto 4G.
Is there a way to force it to stay on 3G? that might be a good test
I was getting the same issue.
I did a factory reset and reinstalled my ROM plus GAPPs and the issue resolved itself.
I am using the latest modern right now and not my bell one. I think it's from a south American carrier, but bit 100% sure of the top of my head. But it is in the current modern thread

[Q] M919 help with LTE

Hi guys, I just received my M919 and flashed it with Stock tmobile 4.4.2 FNB4
I have not rooted this device yet and not planning to do it until next month.
I am with Straighttalk BYOP running on ATT network.
What I notice is the LTE internet connection is always on which drains my battery very quickly.
Is there a way to make it idle when the screen is off?
Thanks
Always on as in showing activity? I think tasker may have data restriction options, so you could give that a try

You can always go to settings->more networks->mobile networks->mobile data-off (a bit tedious if you have to keep turning it off and on =/)

Yes I know that. I don't understand why tmobile burried it there, while on my i9505, you can easily select it on the pulldown list when you swipe your finger from the top of the screen. They removed it along with the wifi tethering. Is there any mod to put those back in there? Maybe I will just look for a toggle switch from play store just like on the old modaco toggle switch.

Yeah there is a mod to enable it. But are you certain that LTE is your issue? I have LTE on all day and don't experience noticeable battery drain

I will test again tonight side by side with my i9505... will update thread tomorrow...
My conclusion is that when LTE is on, it sucks up more juice than when my phone is on H+ .... the solution I am thinking is to turn LTE off, and this negates my reason for buying a Tmobile S4... looks like I am going to return it and just stick with my i9505...
You don't need multiple threads for this. I leave LTE on all the time and I lose 0.7% battery per hour due to idle drain. LTE does use more power than HSPA+ but it isn't nearly as bad on battery life as letting Google, Facebook etc wake up your phone thousands of times per day.
