[Q] HOX boots to recovery! Help? - HTC One X

I'm a bit of a dumbass, and powered off while using Saurik's new android app. Now my phone will only boot into TWRP recovery. I am rooted but was on stock android 4.2.1. Any idea what I can do?

When you choose reboot system from 'recovery'... you still get rebooted to twrp?

Yep, back into TWRP

Strange 0.o
Go to fastboot and flash the recovery again or try another one(CWM)... and don't forget to 'fastboot erase cache'...

How did you flash TWRP when you don't know how to use fastboot?
Download this : http://d-h.st/8Jr.. extract it somewhere in your pc.. and this http://htcfanboys.com/download/seadersn/?action=list&file=4944 (Non touch CWM)... rename it to recovery.img and put it in your fastboot folder...
Hold down your Power and vol down button till your phone gets into bootloader... Now select 'fastboot'... and then connect your phone to your PC... the mobile screen should read 'fastboot USB'
Now run the following commands by opening cmd window from fastboot folder:
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
This will install CWM recovery on your phone... now try rebooting your phone...

Hmmm ohk... it pretty much does the same thing which I have mentioned in my earlier post...
I don't depend on Toolkits... I do it manually... It is more pleasurable lol
PS: If you still want to use HOX toolkit.. download the recovery which I have mentioned in my earlier post... and transfer it to the recovery folder of the toolkit...

You have to open a command window there... not click on the fastboot exe file...
Open fastboot folder and right click anywhere in the window along with pressing the shift key... in the menu.. select "Open command window here"...
and then do the following commands... Make sure your phone is conned to your PC in fastboot mode..

Your talking about this app right? : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.saurik.substrate
From the app FAQs:
Users should keep in mind that Substrate includes a safety feature: by holding down the volume-up button on your device you can disable Substrate while it is attempting to load these modifications (such as while it is turning on and starting); this will give you an opportunity to use Google Play to uninstall things that might be broken.

It installed, I clicked, 'install cydia' which it completed, then clicked 'Restart Zygote/Launcher', which didn't work, it just went to a black screen. I powered off by doing a hard reset and then it started this boot loop

Yes.. "restart zygote/launcer" broke something... not sure what though...
Try wiping cache/dalvic and then reboot... not sure it will help though.. just a guess... Did you read the FAQ? Try doing that... Vol button thing...
If you still can't boot into rom.. then wait for the experts to reply or simply flash the ROM again by full wipe... This will surely fix the problem lol.. but you will loose user app data :/

Yes... However, I always prefer to flash this script : http://d-h.st/kG0
It deep cleans the partitions...
If you flash a new ROM, you will surely loose all your user files (saved games and stuff).. so think before doing it...
Since you used Cydia.. I presume your already rooted with a custom recovery?

[Q] Stuck on HTC screen

Hi,
I'm pretty new to this so I'm just going to state my issue and hopefully I can get some help!
I recently rooted this phone and installed the Viper2 rom for the HTC one x.
I realized that mobile data doesn't work on this rom for me so I decided to "restore" using clockwork and hoping to restore my phone to the "Stock"
So I went through clock work -> restore -> restore back to previous date-> after that I rebooted.
After rebooting, the phone is stuck at the HTC screen. I cannot access anything else except the "power" + "down button volume screen".
Thanks again for the help!
flash boot.img located in clockwardmod/backups folder on sdcard, you can mount USB storage in recovery.

For some reason when I power off the phone and plug in the charger, it doesn't charge..
I tried to fastboot flash path/to/boot.img and it says "error: cannot load path/to/boot.img"
Yes I have a previous backup in my clockwork, I have tried restoring it and then starting my phone and it doesn't work.

ok, you should try charging your phone, sometimes the recovery gives these errors cause there's battery low... so you can't charge battery while it is powered off?

Yeah I can charge it now. It works.
So i rooted my phone through the onexroot website.
What i've been doing before is loading my rom and if something doesn't work/ I just restore and it restores back to the last time i restored it.
but this time I was on the ViperX rom for a day or so and I tried to restore it again like usual but it didn't work this time. Just to give you some background if it wasn't clear earlier.
Thanks again for putting the time in to help me. It's a new phone and I really want it to work again.

Keeps cycling through CWM

Just got a One X.
Unlocked the boot loader.
Installed CWM (v5.8.4.0 from fast boot)
Then when i navigate to the rom it says its completed update? seems to take only 30 seconds when I reboot it brings me back in CWM.
Basically I can mount the phone phone through clock work mod and see the rom/zip file but it installs as update and just keeps popping back into clockwork mod? am I able to just get this back to normal?
finding update package...
opening update package...
installing update...
finishes after 15 seconds? saying install from sdcard complete. have I missed a step?
Help me please guys I feel the information I followed as done away with a boot.img?
Cheers,
Gary

I extracted the boot image from the downloaded rom and placed that in to the fastboot folder? I followed these instructions mate, I think ive messed up the boot?
Copy the CM10 ZIP file to your phone’s internal SD card.
On the PC, extract the Fasboot.zip. You will get a folder named Fastboot.
Extract the boot.img file from the cm10_endeavoru-ota-eng.noeri-028.zip file and place it into the Fastboot folder.
Turn your phone off.
Boot to Fastboot Mode. Hold down the Volume Down and the Power buttons until the screen turns on to enter Bootloader Mode.
In Bootloader Mode, highlight Fastboot Mode using the Volume keys and select it by using the Power button.
Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable.
Open a command prompt on your PC and navigate it to the Fastboot folder.
In the command prompt, type fastboot devices to check if your device has successfully connected to your PC. Your phone’s serial number should appear on the screen.
Flash the boot.img by typing the following in the command prompt:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Go back to your phone and select Bootloader to go back to the main Bootloader menu.
In Bootloader Mode, highlight Recovery using the Volume keys and select it by using the Power button to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery.
Select Wipe data/factory reset > Yes.
Select Install ZIP from SD card > Choose ZIP from SD card > select the cm10_endeavoru-ota-eng.noeri-028.zip file > Yes.
Select Go back > Reboot system now.
Ive then updated to a newer cwm as per this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594819
I dont think i can enter fast boot no longer? I can still mount things, but dont know what else.

Your bootloader and recovery are independent of your rom. you will be able to access them even without a rom installed.
the erase cache fuction is not necessary.
Just flash your boot image again.. and try installing the rom again.

Also have you updated your hboot?? or is it the old one?
I dont think I updated the hboot? should I bother?
I am using the CM10 rom? I know its down to each tastes and requirement but is this a decent one? phone runs smoother than my LG 4X HD P880 despite that scoring more in benchmarks.
I still technically have not installed the rom through CWM? I just used cmd prompt to flash a boot image then it started up.

You can update the hboot if you want. All the sense based JB roms work only on the upgraded hboot. Though AOSP roms work on all hboots. So upto you.

Ok. Does it matter that I'm using a different computer than the one I used originally?
How exactly do I do this, does my phone need to be on or off or what's the story?
Thanks very much.

I had great trouble doing it the last time. It took me several hours and I came close to bricking it a few times. I'm pretty technologically incapable. It's my bootloader thing that won't load anyway, so that's no use to me.
Is there any chance you could be a saint and compile together detailed instructions for me? If not, no worries, but I'm a bit of an idiot.

extract the fastboot zip file and put it in your desktop.
put your downloaded custom recovery inside the fastboot folder. rename it to recovery.img
boot your phone into bootloader press power button+volume down. dont release until you see this.

If you hold shift and right click in side the fastboot folder, it will open a cmd window in that location.
To navigate in cmd you use the CD command
E.g
CD C:\\ will take you to the root of C drive.
CD C:\\fastboot will take you to the folder "fastboot" and so on.

Ok, I've figured out what I was doing wrong. I had my phone plugged into the USB while trying to load the bootloader, and of course that wouldn't work. All is well now, thanks very much.

My ZenFone 2 also got stuck at wiping case for 10 min or more I thought I should interrupt the process but luckily I left for some more minutes and got unstuck, it takes a lot of time for this phone to wipe case.
try holding power plus volume up for 15 sec to do a hard shut down and open it again.
if it doesn't work try volume down.
It wasn't stuck. The wiping process is just extremely slow compared to your experience with TWRP or CWM. If yours is bricked Asus will likely replace it for you.

no. it was stack because i wasnt patient and i stop it... but i fixed it with ADB Fastboot and the command "fastboot erase cache"
then i did a factory reset also very slow at wiping data, formatting data but i take my lesson and i was patient this time!
It's really slow, I bricked mine by updating while rooted accidentally and go stuck in fastboot with no ROM or recovery for a while however I managed to fix it. Patience is key in most cases

If you can enter fastboot, I think you can also enter recovery.
- If you don't care about your data enter recovery and do a wipe data (it may take very very long so please wait). When it reboots, if it's not working flash the original image from Asus site (the same version you have installed) via ADB Sideload in recovery.
- If you have to save your data run tethered TWRP, do a full backup on your microsd, use the TWRP file manager to copy all your internal memory on microsd. For recover apps data, use Titanium backup for recover apps from nandroid backup after you wiped everyting.

I don't care about data, I'll try first method. But before I bricked my phone, I have firmware version 2.18. Now I update boot and recovery images to version 2.19 by fastboot: I have to downgrade them before wipe data or it's not important?

ADB doesn't recognize my device, fastboot does. I enabled USB debugging mode and ADB always worked before I updated Zenfone this morning, but now don't. Is it possible enable 'Update zip from SDCard' instead ADB? Maybe I can fix it in this way
PS before Zenfone I had a Galaxy Nexus and I have a bit of confident with ADB, fastboot, ROM and other stuff, so I know what they are and how work
