To accept the ota update you have to be unrooted or have the stock recovery.

Looks like you will have to odin back to stock, and reroot then. Looks like you got the MIUI that had the nuked recovery... there is a newer one i thought that had fixed this issue. If you need a tutorial on how to go back to stock you can find that here : Unroot/Unbrick Epic 4g
You can also re-flash recovery via fastboot flasher.Or just try reinstalling recovery the usal way via adb.

Where will he get a copy of the MTD Recovery to flash?
OP, what ROM did you go back to? Did you do this by restoring a nandroid? It looks like to get back to MTD Recovery you will need to Odin back to stock with repartition checked then move forward from there since you can't get into CWM. You can try ROM Manager before you go that route, set it for manual flash override, Epic-MTD and clockwork 3.x.x.x and see if it will get you into cwm. If not Odin is the way to go.

No you cant, there isnt an MTD clockwork mod that you can flash... and you dont use ADB on this phone for recovery... its Odin. Otherwise if he reflashed the Recovery through odin he would brick his phone.
And the moderator beats me to it

Removing CWM Recovery off stock device

Hi. I was wondering how I would go about removing CWM Recovery off my stock s3.
My computer isn't that good and I want to remove it so I can do the jb update. It keeps saying the file signature failed and wont install and I thought if maybe I got rid of CWM it would let me update.
All help is appreciated.

Same issue here. I have CWM Recovery and the device is rooted. Doesn't seem to like the OTA for Jelly Bean.
My device isn't rooted tho. That's why I wanna get rid of it. If I was rooted I'd flash jb. I couldn't get rooted. My computer screen wasn't big enough to click ok in Odin. And when I finally did It rebooted but said it couldn't finish the root.

Update:
Flashed stock recovery. Went to do update and the update got to 24% and rebooted. Pop-up said it failed and to use kies.
Ill try again later and see if maybe a new update cache would fix it.

You may have selected the option to just flash the insecure boot image + root + install busybox. You can go back and flash just the recovery or flash it using Goomanager from the Play Store

I don't suppose you would care to elaborate?
Okay, i went through the toolkit and tried the all in one. It went through for the root and everything seemed good. Then it said to do the recovery through ODIN which I did but everytime i boot into recovery, it's the stock recovery.
Oh. Go into recovery before the phone has a chance to reboot.
I got it finally. I restored the phone then tried it again and it worked fine. Thank you all.

Yep. As long as you are rooted.
Twrp (like all those people said) never had any problems with it and it's the most convenient recovery out there.

Well, if you're feeling up to it, you could test it for the rest of us. No one seems to have reported back about anything yet. I'm sure that it will break root though.

i didnt go back and reread it but i think thats what garwynn tried and he lost root.
This is kinda required to get the OTA, isn't it?
If I understand correctly, the OTA will fail if rooted? Or is that it will fail if CWM/TW recovery is in place?

It will fail if you have cwm or twrp in place.....you need the stock recovery for it.....I think it will work even if you have root, but your root will be lost once you update

Thanks.. I thought it was one of those, just couldn't remember which. I may just hold off until I see what others are doing. I am going to look for a nice TouchWiz ROM that allows me to theme it.
Once the awesome Devs here at XDA get their hands on the code, it won't be long before we have a rootable Stock 4.3..
I've been wondering.
Do I need a stock recovery and a stock ROM to update or can I be running a custom ROM such as digiblur and update using stock recovery?

I'd just throw that under the "do not attempt" category. Odds are that while trying to apply the update, stock recovery would detect some assets that don't belong in your current build and abort the update. Also, if this update was successful and something messed up, you would now have no custom recovery. You would have to Odin back to whatever software version possible.
