Hi,
I've rooted my Note 2 using ODIN on latest stock.
I tried flashing a zip file with Mobile ODIN Pro (checked Clear Dalvik Cache and Cache) but
it did something sort of Factory Reset. My root was preserved but apart from that, all gone.
I used the "Select file" option to select Xperia XZ player zip file.
Can anybody tell me why did it did a factory reset rather than just adding up the player ?
Now I'm thinking of adding a custom bootloader (please suggest which is the best one) so that I can flash with the zip files that appear everyday in xda.
Can anybody help me with that ? (I'm on rooted stock already).
Also, after I get a custom bootloader and flash any zip file, how can I undo the flashing if some problem occurs ?
And last, how can I revert to stock bootloader if required ?
Thanks in advance.

Isn't odin for flashing tar files?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
I don't think you can flash .zip files using Odin it's only for .tar you well have to use Odin to install and custom recovery. Then MAKE A BACK UP... Then you can flash what ever you want as long as it's made for your phone
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app
Odin does let you flash zip files, I've flashes a lot of, if files including kernels roms and mods
Doing a factory reset from Odin it will erase all the user apps and data from phone memory but will keep root intact
I suggest you to go ahead and install the custom recovery twrp or cwm for flashing zip files because it will let you make an n nanandroid backup
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
@apurva.giri Don't messup custom recovery with custom bootloader, there is no custom bootloader.
Another thing, you did wrong to flash zip with mobile odin
What you have selected 'Open file' option is meant to flash full ROM, If you want to flash flashable zip with mobile odin, you have to select OTA/Update zip option.
So u mean, all those flash files that appear everyday for customization, those can be installed via that OTA/Update zip option ?
And how would I remove them in case somethin goes wrong ?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Yes flashable zip files you can flash with ota/zip file option.
To revert back, If you have restore file ready with mode, you can simply flash that, but all developer doesn't provide it, in that case you have to backup all the files manually which zip file replaces.

I've been browsing the forums for a couple of months. Read lots of how-to guides but they all give different ways of doing the same thing.
Thought I knew a lot about computers, but feeling like a noob
GT-N7100 (international) running 4.1.1. Rooted using N7100. Backed up all my apks and data using Carbon, the backup app. I assume that if I wipe the device I can restore... so I'm good to go.
Wanted to put on a custom 4.2 rom so I picked Carbon (1.4-2FEB2003). Reviews looked favourable.
Downloaded Rom Manager v5.5.2.3. Clicked "Recovery Setup", rebooted, my Current Recovery is now Clockworkod 6.0.1.9.
Downloaded the rom using goomanager. Rom is sitting in a zip in a directory on my sd card.
Installed Mobile ODIN Lite v3.65 since I wanted to keep the flash count at 0.
Mobile ODIN doesn't see any of the files (they're zip). If I unzip them using an external zipper then I can manual select "Kernel" boot.img, but no idea what files to select for the rest of the options. Ok, so abandoned ODIN.
Back to ROM Manager. Install ROM from SD Card, however that app appears to be bugged since it's not able to show the external sd card, (extSdCard) and just shows internal memory.
Installed ROM Toolbox Lite. Install ROM from SD card. Browsed onto the SD card. Hurrah... picked the rom. ROM Pre-Installation appears, picked Backup Existing ROM, Wipe Data and Cache (shudder), Wipe Dalvik Cache. Ok. Reboot and install. OK. Phone reboots.
Into ClockworkMod.
Screen appears with a falled down droid. Options are: reboot system now, apply update from ADB, apply update from external storage, wipe data/factory reset/ wipe cache partition, apply update from cache.
No idea what to pick. I'd have expected to get a "install rom from sd card" or some other such option, since "update" sounds like just changing clockworkmod.
Choosing "reboot system now" and the system comes back up as if I hadn't told it to install rom. Apply from external allows me to browse the rom but then I get ann E:signature veritifcation failed.
Hard-reboot. Back into 4.1.1.
I can plug into my computer (mac - so no Odin). While I'd like to keep my trianges away etc for warranty, it's not 100% critical.
How to progress further? Which of the several flashing tools should I use? What noob mistakes am I making?
1st Of all Every time You Flash a Custom Rom or boot into recovery mode ur binary will be increased so its pointless to use Triangle away while you are rooted , But when you decide to make ur device completely stock then use Triangle away and flash a Stock Rom which will unroot ur device and get ota updates back.
Now for flashing custom Roms its simple By Using any custom recovery Clockworkod or TWR.. etc:
1- Turn Off ur device then boot into recovery ( Vol up + Home + Power)
2- Make sure you have downloaded the Rom to your external SD Card
3- Wipe data Factory Reset ( Your External will remain untouched)
4- Wipe Cach
5- Wipe Dalvik cach
6- Finally Install Zip From SD Card an choose install Zip from External Card , Aroma Installer will popup then you can take it from here

Would you expect the Install Zip from SD Card option to appear if I'd skipped steps 2-5. I.e. if I haven't factory wiped yet, would the option not appear? Or should it always be there and there is something else wrong?
Thanks for your help BTW.

if u skip steps 2-5 you will face problems in the new rom. even worse the new rom may not boot normally due to leftover system data files n settings of the previous rom.
best way to flash is to reboot to recovery rather than using some softwares.

Maybe this is where my confusion is coming from. I'm not seeing a backup option in the clockwork menu. Nor am I seeing a flash rom option, or anything other than the few options.
Those options are: reboot system now, apply update from ADB, apply update from external storage, wipe data/factory reset/ wipe cache partition, apply update from cache.
That means you haven't flashed cwm recovery.

According to ROM Manager on the phone I'm getting told
"Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 6.0.1.9
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 6.0.1.9"
I've tried reflashing the recovery a couple of times but it makes no difference.
I've checked clockworkmod.com/rommanager and indeed 6.0.1.9 appears correct.
Is there a different tool I should be using to put the cwm recovery into place?
Again, thanks to everyone so far for your help. This noob wants to not be a noob

When you say "in recovery" did you mean in the ROM Manager app, or somewhere else? I'll assume you meant when booting in recovery mode.
If I boot into recovery mode (from ROM Manager, click the reboot into recovery, or by power off/on with keys) I get the fallen down droid, and the following:
"Android system recovery <3e>
Volume up/down to move highlight:
power button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache

Hmm... screenshot definitely doesn't look like that. So what do I need to do to get that recovery installed? ROM Manager doesn't seem to want to do it. I wonder if the way I got root is the problem?

I've downloaded the file (6.0.1.9) and it comes as a .img file. However, by default, mobile odin wouldn't handle it. Searched and found another post that said to rename it to "recovery.img" and... MO found it. Hurrah. Flashed. Hurrah.
It rebooted into it once. All looked good. But on reboot it's gone. I'm a lot further along than this morning so thank you. I'll go play some more!

You have to use Odin for it, and also ancora.ops which is provided in arco's CWM thread. You first need to download Odin. Check on www.sammobile.com what the latest stock for your region is. Search the stock somewhere around here and in the dev-forum. Reboot your phone to download mode when connected to PC. Open Odin, insert ancora.ops and check one package. Choose your stock, most probably a .tar.md5 and flash it. Your phone will reboot and then you'll be on stock. When I did this with my softbrick I also lost root and CWM.

Not sure that's gonna work since the recovery will also be replaced by the stock one.
If that's the case, I would do the following things:
1. Download CWM for Samsung Galaxy Wonder from here. (It's also available in the development section here.)
2. Flash it via ODIN, by following exactly the same steps as for the ROM flashing.
3. Enter CWM and:
clear data (factory reset)
clear dalvik cache (under "advanced" menu)
go back one step and under "mounts & storage menu -> select "format /system" option. This step is crucial for a clean install!! Especially when changing Android versions.
under the same menu, go ahead and format /sdcard. (Be careful NOT to format /external_sd !)
4. exit from there and put your phone into Download Mode again (Home button + Volume DOWN + Power Button).
5. flash the stock ROM via ODIN
6. That's all. Good luck!
Hope you got the correct stock ROM. Also, I hope this little tutorial helps you fix your phone.

One question... Odin for Ubuntu... I know that Heimdall works the same for linux but how do you use it?
Ehndroix JB with S3 Style Pack
I installed cwm using ROM manager. Right now, there is no problem with phone's working, and I was also able to backup my stock ROM. The problem is, when I flash a new ROM (using rom manager), it ends up in the same stock ROM with factory reset. I can't also boot into the clockworkmode recovery. What shall I do to replace the current cwm version with a working version?
Go into download mode and reflash ur stock rom with odin. You will also have stock recovery back.
Re-root and flash cwm with your stock recovery.
Thats it.
Youre a lucky guy if your phone still wants to boot after rommanager cwm...
Just to make sure, you can flash roms WITH rommanager, but not FROM rommanager.
The ones in their list arent compatible with our gio.

Hi everyone,
I had just rooted my stock i747 (Telus) now, and it was all going well until I couldn't boot into CWM. I read this thread (scroll down to bottom where it talks about "What to do if Phone Boots into Stock Recovery (Android Recovery) instead of CWM"): androidtelegraph.com/guide-install-clockworkmod-cwm-recovery-on-samsung-galaxy-s3-gt-i9300/
In short, I had deleted the two files: "recovery-from-boot.p.", and "install-recovery.sh" in attempt to solve my issue to boot into CWM. Once in CWM, I followed this guide to install a stable CyanogenMod ROM: galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-roms/how-to-install-custom-rom-on-rooted-galaxy-s3/
This is where the trouble begins. First, when I attempted to wipe data/factory reset, there was an error. If I recall, it was an error dealing with the mounting of something (probably the stock ROM). Nevertheless, it continued to wipe the data. Next, when I browsed to find the ROM inside the directory and pressed Yes to start installing the ROM, this is where I could not continue. It gave me an error and I do not know how to fix it. I was wondering if it would have to do with the fact that I deleted "recovery-from-boot.p." and "install-recovery.sh" previously.
What went wrong? What do I do? Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
If you can boot into your phone then just use ROM manager to flash CWM again. You also use ADB.
Your other option is to go into Download Mode and use ODIN to install TWRP.

Do the 2 files I deleted affect the flashing of any ROM? If so, how do I get those 2 files back? What is the point of flashing CWM again?? Sorry as I am totally new to all of this!

Basically I would do what the guy told you above. I would also download the ROM you want to flash again and try again without modifying anything. You shouldn't have to modify anything unless the Dev told you otherwise.
