[Q] How To Wipe for Return? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I ended up dropping my phone when I fell down the stairs late last month, cracking the digitzer/screen in the process. I just put in a claim with Asurion - payed $100, should be getting the phone tomorrow or the next day.
My question is, is there any way for me to wipe my phone before sending it back? The phone still turns on - I can hear my tone going off for new emails and messages, and I can even receive calls - I just can't answer them or see anything because the screen won't turn on. I tried using a remote software to access the phone on my laptop via USB, but I can't put my phone into USB mode because I can't tap the button on the screen. Is there any other way for me to erase my phone? I don't want to risk anyone seeing anything I have on the phone, or accessing any of my accounts and the like.

If you don't have to send it to them, then just use the motherboard on your new device. Will save a ton of time setting everything back up.

Unfortunately, I do have to send the old device back, and I don't have the means of opening the device. I don't necessarily need anything from the device - I just want to wipe it so that all of my text messages, all of my linked accounts (such as dropbox and my email), and all of my business related messages are erased.
Do you think a Sprint tech would be able to transfer and wipe the phone? I mean, I don't know how they transfer contacts or anything. I just really need my information to not be available to anyone.

Odin a one click. It will wipe all personal information but won't wipe your internal storage AFAIK
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

You can odin a jellybean stock rom. It wiuld wipe the internal as well. Although its not securely wiped. Someone really eager can still retrieve the deleted files if they wanted to. Its likely if the motherboard is still good that when its refurbished it will be in someone elses hands. I would shock the hell out of the board. You already have to pay the deductible.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2

I can't actually see the display or anything. Would I be able to Odin without looking at the screen?

Yep hold volume down and power button. Id say give or take about 7 seconds. Maybe someone can time it for you. Then push volume up. Then connect to odin and flash away.

Try using Kies to backup all of your data such as contacts, pictures, music, videos, text messages, call logs, apps, etc. Then use the restore option with the new one. Voila! Like nothing ever happened.
Then use Odin to flash the stock leaked GB27 tar.md5 file.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

Thanks for all of the help everyone.
The kies method didn't work, unfortunately; before or after flashing, unfortunately. However, I didn't really need it to - I wanted to see what was on the phone, but I flashed GB27 stock, so nothing should be left on it, right?
I did get my new phone in though - it's already activated and ready.

Contact crash?

Hello all,
Suddenly I'm having this problem where one of my contacts will start dialing, then quickly beep, and then crash back out to the Home Screen. No matter how I call, via the shortcut or dialing the number digit by digit, it crashes. Every other number works. When I dial the number via Google Voice it's fine. Texting that contact is fine. But calling is impossible. Anyone ever hear about this? Any ideas on what to do? I kinda need this contact.. it's my wife!
Thanks!
Wait, so even if you delete the contact and dial the number directly, it crashes? I suspect it is a contact that had something in it. For example, on the stock ROM, the way the stock contacts apps saves Pauses and Waits is different than some of the custom ROMs contact/dialer apps. So when I went to a new ROM, some of those contacts had data simply not supported by the ROM. I bet if you open the contact in Google from a PC, there is some sort of item stored in the contact that is throwing the dialer app out of whack.

I think we all know what really happened here...
You forgot to call your wife, so you told her that it was because your phone won't let you. She wouldn't believe you so to convince her, you started this thread.
jk man. Seriously, its probably what fermunky said. Are you rooted, and if so, on a custom rom?

Hey guys,
Yeah, I'm rooted on Cyanogen's ROM. My wife is as well, she's had no such issues and I didn't do anything that could have prompted this. I deleted the contact, texts, emails so there was no trace of it and I still can't dial her number at all. This is ridiculous. Will I have to re-root??? I'm not synced to Google so I can't do that PC edit.
Thoughts???

Hey again... just tried exporting and re-importing my contacts and it still refuses to let me dial the one contact. I'm afraid I'm facing a hard reset because I can't go to work tomorrow without fixing this.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Normally I would ask for the number to try and test it, but I am sure giving the number is out of the question... Have you tried swapping SIM cards, and then use her phone, with your SIM, and tried dialing the number again? If it follows your SIM card then I could only think of two things:
1: The SIM card has the contact on it, and is buggin the phone out
2: By some WEIRD fluke, your provider is somehow screwing up the handling on this one particular call.
I'm also getting this weird, blank, nameless System Group when I choose which contacts to display in Display Options. Never seen that before. Every time I make a new app it automatically decides to make it a Google contact. WHY?? I don't use Google for contacts. I don't get the option not to do that. And the contact goes to this blank group. I also see "System Group: My Contacts" and "All Other contacts" in addition to this blank one.
I don't even know how to see the SIM card contacts. But I don't use the SIM card as a rule. Not saying it couldn't have ended up copied or backed up there, just saying I don't use it for the obvious fields limitations.
So, since I'm on CM6, can I use Titanium to back everything up, then hard reset or is that not doable on a custom ROM?
You said this phone is not tied to a Google account?
It's tied to a Google account for Maps, etc but I don't have the contacts synced up. so I can't go to the PC as suggested and clean out the contact.
Well, as a troubleshooting measure, why not sync it to a PC and then view that contact in GMail to see if something is there.
However, you said you've completed deleted the contact, and direct-dialed the number with the same result? If so, do what I said and swap your SIM card into the other phone and dial the number again please.
Yes, that's right. However, if there were remnants on the SIM card, I wouldn't know. I certainly didn't put them there.
Soon as I meet my wife in about an hour I will do that test to see what happens and I'll reply back.
But meantime, any thoughts on my hard reset questions? I'm just thinking that if I use Titanium to back up the phone, and export the contacts, maybe I should just start from scratch? Any idea on the blank group I mentioned?
It may be doing that since you're not syncing contacts, not really sure.
As for swapping the SIM card, I am not suggesting it is a contact on the SIM card, just want to eliminate it as being a provider issue.
Do you notice if this only happens when calling the number from the same geographical location? Like, will it do it when you're at home versus when you're at work, grocery store, etc?
As for the backing up, cant help ya there. Never used titanium.
Happens everywhere. Not geo-specific.
Any other ideas for backing up and hard resetting? I'm actually more concerned about whether hard resetting on CM6 is a problem or complicated or anything.
Ok, I swapped cards with my wife...
- Called her number with HER phone using MY Sim, call went through fine.
- Called her number with MY phone using HER Sim, got to voicemail no problem.
Put MY Sim back in MY phone, beep and crash again.
Grrrrrrr......

Just hard reset my phone. Did nothing. Still can't dial the number.
Dang... how did you do the reset? I usually suggest doing the wipe from recovery.
If that still doesn't work, I'd try maybe un-rooting, make sure it works on stock rom, and if it works, then try rooting again and try again. That is pretty bizarre though.
I just did the standard power off, reboot holding down volume down, then "clear storage". Also, since doing this and then restoring everything with Titanium, I've noticed I'm not getting email updates even though it's on.
Oh man.... I've never had to even think about unrooting and rerooting. No idea where to start. Any tips on how to do that or a good guide I can follow?
This is so annoying.
Try wiping from recovery. The Clear Storage option you're using is in hboot, I believe.
Trying to wipe from recovery now. I'll see what happens. Before and after restoring from Titanium.
No dice... still happening. I'm officially stumped. I called T-Mo. They were shocked. They're sending me a warranty replacement.
Now, though, I've gotta unroot. Never done that before.

[Q] Text Messaging Problems, native Email, etc. (HTC Incredible)

Hello there,
I'm relatively new to XDA but I've heard that pretty much any problem can be solved through you guys. So here we go. I have an original HTC Incredible (hence the title) which is rooted and has the Android Business Gingersense 2.3.5 ROM installed. My problem is hard to explain, yet may be very simple. I simply cannot send or receive text messages to my knowledge.
So here are the details. Whenever I compose a text message in the native "Messages" app, I click send and the "Loading..." little window with the spinny circle pops up for a split second, disappears and nothing happens. It doesn't show me that the message was sent, nor does it give me an error message saying that it didn't send. Nothing. I have heard, however, from the people I sent the messages to that some of them did in fact go through, but I just didn't know they did cause it didn't show up on my screen. They also said they texted me back multiple times trying to get a hold of me to no avail, which is the other problem. I also cannot receive any messages. It may be that these issues are connected in some way but I am not sure.
Another problem. My native email app has the same sort of issue, only when I compose a message and hit send, it force closes the app saying, "an unexpected problem has occurred." Therefore I cannot send or receive emails as well. Quite inconvenient as many of you probably know.
One last issue involving the texting problem. May not have anything to do with the native sms app, but I believe there is still a possibility. I mainly text with Pinger's TextFree application, which not surprisingly has the same problem as the native app. Every time I try to send a message, NOTHING happens, yet I get reports from the people I "sent" the message to that they actually got the message and tried to get back up with me multiple times. Still, I didn't receive anything. But I did go on the web based version of the app and saw both of our messages between each other and the web app worked fine.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated and I hope I can get this resolved.
Thanks alot!
Almost sounds like a data/mms config problem. Are you able to receive any messages or emails at all?

Open the stock messaging app then hit menu - settings - connection settings, there will be 5 settings greyed out in there. What are the current settings for those 5?
Edit: Nevermind i forgot were talking about cm9, might not the same settings as sense. Better yet go to the market and download "apn backup and restore", do a backup and then go to the sdcard then the apn backup folder and then open the xml backup with a text editor and copy and paste its contents to here. You are on verizon correct?

Okay, I think I have figured it out. Before I reflashed, I deleted my Google account. Then, reflashed C9 and when prompted on reboot to sign into Google, I clicked "later".
So, now I received several test text messages I had sent the past 2 days.
So far, so good.
Also, when I restore from Titanium, I am only going to restore Apps, but not the System Data.
I think Google is somehow interfering with things. Maybe something funky with how my Google Voice is interacting with my phone. Who knows. Anyway, I will be sure to report back here to help others that may have similar problems.
Well, so far so good. When I re-installed Apps I de-selected Data.
Texting is fine now.
Perhaps it was the System Data from prior ROMs interfering with the current ROM?

One more follow-up. I now Restored all data for the apps separately through Titanium.
Texting still works.
I think when I flashed the new C9 ROM, when I restored Apps+Data in Titanium, something got screwed up and thus the texting function got screwed up.
Now able to send SMS texts but NOT receive them
I'm reviving this thread.
I have checked out a few other threads, and this comes the closest to describing my issues with my rooted unlocked (SEC OFF) HTC Droid Incredible (version 1).
I did NOT change ROMs -- right after getting the DINC, I installed a rooted stock deodexed GB 2.3.4 ROM from DINC.DOES-IT.NET, and I have not touched the ROM since.
BTW, the ROM build is 4.06.605.3 CL 140944 release-keys
Ditto baseband radios, no change. Version: 2.15.10.07.07
I did recently update the kernel to a version of gingertiny that allows apps to record phone conversations without the speakerphone being turned on.
Old version: 2.6.35.14-gingertiny-v2+ Feb 2012
New Version: 2.6.35.14-gingertiny-v2 Nov 6 2012
It is POSSIBLE that the problems started with the change of kernel, because I don't use texting very much at all, but that was still a few weeks ago.
Based on what I have read on XDA, I went into Clockwork Mod 5.x Recovery, deleted and reformatted the data cache, and rebooted.
After that, I could SEND but NOT RECEIVE text SMS.
I had some doubts about whether all my calls were ringing through properly. I am still not entirely sure, but test calls from a landline and mobile phone did ring the phone, so maybe that is no longer (or maybe was not ever?) a problem.
I have seen suggestions to do everything from reinstalling ROM (being sure to restore only apps+data, NOT system data) to flashing a new radio to running *228 over-the-air update to manually upgrading the PRL list.
And then there is the question I have about the kernel change somehow being the culprit...
EDIT: One other thing I did right before changing the kernel was run Convert2Ext4 v2.0 using the "no data limit normal dalvik" version. My reason for running this was to get rid of the low memory/no memory warnings, lockups and crashes I was expriencing despite having over 300MB left out of 775MB on internal memory.
How should I go about trying to restore the ability to receive SMS without totally bricking or otherwise disrupting my DINC and causing more harm than good?
The SMS issue is not a kernel-related issue. I'm reading and re-reading the thread and I'm not 100% positive on what caused the issue for you. Also the convert mod would have no impact on phone related features (data/SMS/calls). Also on the convert mod, the 750MB internal memory (/data) partition is not what was causing the low storage, it's the 150MB /data/data partition that HTC uses for app data/libs/cache.
Process of elimination says go back to the previous kernel from February and see if you have the texting issue. Go back to the same exact build and see if that fixes it. I'd be surprised if the kernel change caused it as a lot of people are using gingertiny without issue.
Also a couple of other thoughts. Are you using the stock SMS app or a third party? Try uninstalling any third party SMS apps temporarily if you have them. Last suggestion is to call Verizon and see if they have a block on receiving SMS. I don't think they would since you can send them and it has to be customer initiated.
Also, no where in your post did it say you tested SMS, just that you couldn't receive them so I'm guessing your conclusion is from the fact that someone said they sent it and you didn't receive them.

Thanks for having a look in, Tiny.
I use PagePlus running off VZW towers. PagePlus service rep sent me an SMS while I was in contact with her by phone, she said it got deducted from by cash balance. The only thing is, it did not actually reach my phone!
I have only used the stock SMS app until just yesterday, when I installed Handcent SMS. That did not help. Will uninstall, but I doubt that will make a difference.
Will go back to the old gingertiny kernel and see what that does, and report back here.
If that doesn't do it, maybe it's time for a Touch of Blue ROM, with which many seem to be doing so wiell...

Defected Samsung s3?

Hello All,
I been having problems with messaging on the S3 i got last month from T Mobile. It lags and a lot of time it says that the messages failed to send. When I send and receive a lot of texts, sometimes the contact list crashes and almost all the names revert back to numbers. ( some still retained their names for some reasons while others lost it) I have to restart the phone to get it back. Once the contact has stopped, I cannot access it until I restart my phone! Any comments or help would be greatly appreciate. Thank all, you guys are the best!!
Go back to the store you got it from and ask for a new one, and explain to them all the problems you are having with the phone. That is what i would do. The worst thing they can say is no.

No because on the i9300 the JB ROMs have a sloe memory leak in them compounded with the extra texts I had saved and more being stored I would run out of memory every few hours. I know before I deleted a couple threads on my T999 I would sometimes see a loading screen for messages or numbers for a split second instead of contact names.

I think you can take it to a T Mobile store and they'll just do everything for you.
I'm a do it yourselfer too whenever possible, but if someone will just plug it in and take care of it for you in 5 minutes that might be the simplest option here.
Unfortunately you're out of luck. Your phone won't display the contents of the internal SD card unless you unlock the phone which requires a working screen. If recovered info off someone's phone with a broken screen by connecting a working screen to it temporarily to unlock it.
This requires taking your phone apart but is very easy if you're comfortable.

I need help trying to restore my phone after a factory reset, where it did not auto-restore.

So, my A5 2017 was giving my problems so I backed it up to Samsung backup, or at least I tried. I thought I read somewhere that Samsung stoppped their backup service for that phone, and said to back up using Google. So., I also backed up there.
The thing is, the problem happend while I was away and couldn't get it looked at right away. I thought I was SOL, but I looked at my Google backup and the date is still from before the reset! I just don't know how to tell it to restore the phone using what's in my Google cloud storage.
If that ends up not being possible I did manually save as many files as I could. Even going into directories that the phone said were empty but still would show files if you went down the rabbit hole deep enough. All I really want are my contacts, whcih I THINK I exported to a file anyways, and just as important, my text message history. If I could get back what I had in my Notes app that would be great too, but that's way down the list.
Does anyways know how I would do this? I do see in the Google settings that I can restore the contacts, or so it says, but I looked in the cloud folders and there are 2 zip files that start with "takeout" and then I think a dash and numbers. I looked in them and it definitely has way more then just my contacts in it.
I'm a small business owner and I use this phone for work, so losing all the texts is actually kind of a problem. I actually didn't realize how much so until it happend.
Thank you very much for any help you can offer!
