[Q] Factory Reset Rooted Phone? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello everyone...Noob Here
I have Epic Touch 4g that im going to sell. I wanted to factory reset it. But i know if i do that, i'll get stuck in an endless loop because of the root.
I've been on the Note 2 since it came out and i dont know what build Epic Touch is?
I currently have 4.1.2 Jellybean on the it and the build number is FK23
What build should i upgrade/downgrade to? Can i do it safely without bricking my phone?
What should i do?
Any help would be great
Thank You,
Major <3

Factory reset will not cause a boot loop, it also will not remove root. You need to use a One-Click restore.

Just did this to return to Sammy for repair. Btw, in the future, questions go in the q&a, not general. Kennyglass is awesome, and will move this promptly I'm sure . But in the meantime, first, while rooted, run triangle away. Then use Mobile Odin to flash the gb27(sprint), gb28(vm), or gc01(boost) unrooted restore. When that is done, after reboot, format your internal hard drive (and external if you are selling that) and you will be good to go. Good luck.

[Q] It probably been asked before but...

I am thinking about rooting my phone (since my upgrade isn't until November and I want ics) but I have a few questions.
1. How difficult is rootng the Epic?
2. They say it's difficultto brick this phone but if I do how difficult is it to recover?
3. Will rooting require wiping of all phone data?
4. In Novemeber when I go get my LTE phone how difficult is it to unroot?
5. Lastly, what is the best rom with for beginners (I know a little about tech and programming but impatient so I want the easy one)
That is all, thanks in advanced for any help.
Excuse any spelling errors... you on an epic you know why they there.

1. Real easy on EC05 but if you already upgraded to Gingerbread, a little more difficult. Qbking77 has made some amazing easy to follow videos. Google qbking77 how to root EI22 OTA. If you can't find it I can get you a link tonight.
2. A true brick means a dead phone, no lights, no power, no nothing. That is difficult to recover from. If it just goes into a boot loop or something like that it is pretty easy to recover usually requiring a computer and Odin. Also videos available. A lot of videos are in the stickies in the top of General subforum.
3. No, rooting does not wipe your data. Once you are rooted there are backup programs available that I recommend you use before flashing ROMs.
4. If you want to unroot to sell the phone it is as simple as using Odin to put full stock back on. That will also wipe your data for easier sale.
5. Hmmm...I think Legendary is very beginner friendly. I put it on my GF's phone and she LOVES it.
Feel free to ask questions here as you go or PM me. But watch those videos.

Ever-helpful kenny is spot-on again. This pretty much sums it up. The only thing I would add is another ROM to try out would be the CleanGB one. I put that on wifey's phone and she likes that one. I'm a Legendary guy and I would say it's pretty easy to use. I don't have any issues with it at all. The CleanGB ROM is more stock-ish than Legendary, so it's really up to you.
qbking makes really good videos, as mentioned. He even shows you exactly what threads to go into and get what you need out of them. The only thing easier/better would be to have someone physically show up at your house and do it for you.
Spot on info... but rooting gingerbread is also super easy... download the rom you want to use (kernel will be included in the rom) odin cwm 5.0.2.7 with nothing checked (not even auto reboot). Pull battery when odin finishes. Boot into cwm using 3 finger method directly after odin and flash rom... now you are rooted on the custom gb rom... if you want to stay stock you will have to download the su.zip and a custom kernel (believe there is a stock one with keyboard fix) odin the kernel and then cwm and then flash su.zip. rooted on stock.. see pretty easy!

Also rooting will help with your spelling (assuming you meant the keyboard skipping).

Touch recovery on Caulkin 4.0 ROM?

I recently flashed Caulkin's 4.0 Rom for the e4gt and was wondering if its possible to flash touch recovery with the Rom? I would normally play around to figure it out, but figured I'd ask first so I can maybe avoid a brick.
Thanks in advance!

Did you mean Calk's 1.4?
You shouldn't be using touch recovery with anything for risk of bricking your phone.
And if you're using ANY version of ICS, you also risk bricking your phone if you try to use any form of recovery.

I agree with the first part, stay away from CWM9 touch. Youre asking to get bricked. CWM5-7 recover rogue is fine to use between ICS roms. Always run Calkins format all. And never use cwm.recovery to do a nand back to GB. Flash SFHUBS stock EL29 first via Odin..along with calk's format all prior to.that then nandroid back to your previous set up.

Someone tell me why the F this hasn't been "fixed" yet? My last phone was an OG Droid and we didn't have to deal with the amount of 'you must wipe with this recovery, flash with this recovery, use ODIN to do this...' crap when we went from Eclair to FroYo and nothing ever got bricked... this is just ridiculous.

You my friend sounds like a man who wants to fix it.... Can't complain(if your are complaining) about stuff that you yourself can not help on or fix.. If you don't like the procedure its not like you are being forced to do it... My bad I know I know I will shut up now
Edit: sorry OP I should of at least chimed in on your question.... If you want to use Touch recovery it tells me you have not read much in these forums so I would suggest you take a lil time and read the brick threads and stickys... Quite helpful
Thanks guys, you just saved me a huge headache lol. I only asked because i hate to lose a paid app, but better that than brick my phone.
Thanks again!

Build a solid ics kernel for us then. Or wait until we get the official release. There is no fix because nothing is broken. All ics roms for this phone are built on leaked kernels.
But I'm sure your post was just sarcasm and you knew that since it's been spoken about in just about every ics rom thread.

Help please with OTA AT and T update on rooted phone

Hello,
My phone is rooted but ROM is stock. I don't generally flash anything and just stick to removing bloatware.
I installed TWRP and now I cannot get the latest official OTA AT&T update since the update load fails due to not having stock recovery. I have been searching online and cannot figure out how to get stock recovery.
I have been able to locate a supposed stock zip ROM for this phone. Can I just somehow flash this ZIP to return my phone to stock.
On previous phones I have been able to do a factory reset, which I have done several times on this phone today, in order to get it back to stock and accept OTA updates. This TWRP seems extremely invasive and I cannot get rid of it.
Thanks for any help
dave

I gave up and ended up just flashing cleanrom 3.5. Didn't wipe, kept all of my apps and data. I recommend this route if, like me, you want to keep stock kernel and tw.

I am the original poster. My phone would not flash the stock ATT rom that I downloaded somewhere. It could have been a bad ROM.
I could only end up getting into recovery and download mode. I did something to erase the entire operating system.
The guys over at TWRP or at least the guys on the message board got me through it. I ended up flashing the 3.5 clean rom. I never flashed a rom before only rooted. i also flashed the new modem zip as well. So far so good I guess.
Im going to have to figure out how to do an entire backup of my phone so that next time I can just restore it.
Thanks for the replies

Boot in to recovery (it's now an option from the power button) and follow the very easy buttons for backup. Select everything for an entire system backup (7 checks, I believe). Future backups can be just your data and apps if you want.

Flashing help/soft brick

Had a s3 a year ago. No probs rooting and flashing. Sold it. Got another one yesterday. Rooted and put on TWRP which I never used before. Wiped and flashed Eclipse and gor a soft brick with continuous Samsung logo.
Used the back to stock rom zip avaible on xda. Kept twrp and root. Phone works as it should. Wiped and flashed again and got same soft brick.
Questions is....am I doing something wrong? Can some explain in detail how to wipe and what to wipe with twrp for someone new to it? And any thoughts why I would get the soft brick? Thanks in advance...
Have u checked over in the general forum for the modded recoveries? Seems that sprint or Samsung had locked the new s3s up. Not a ure if what you have explained are the symptoms or not, but @kennyglass123 and @CNexus worked on some issues with new bootloaders. Check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391616

Check to see if it was a bad download.
Ok. Ill give it a go with a different rom and see if that helps. Again I'm new to twrp. Which wipe should I be doing. I don't care about losing music or photos. Just want a clean slate.

Also...read about the custom recovery in the link you posted. I can access both external and internal storage so I don't think that would help. If I'm correct that's what the custom recovery seems to be for right?

[Q] Help on reverting my I747 back from a T999 convert?

So, a while back, i decided to convert my ATT galaxy s3 to a tmobile build so i could run LTE from tmobile on it. Now, my problem is, i want to revert back to full att again, in which i have tried, but im getting something wrong (Status 7 errors and what not, i feel related to the changeover) and i don't want to brick my phone trying over and over. I could use some help with what ill need to FULLY get back to at least stock so i can root and install a fresh kitkat rom. Any help is appreciated!
I attached a screen of my build as well.
How exactly did you go about this? What were the zips you used to do this? What zips are you trying to flash? These are all things that can help us out in figuring out what went wrong.
Well i had read around of a test rom created especially for tmobiles GS3 variant that ran on att in order to run their LTE. So i flashed that rom and i believe custom kernels and a modem. Only thing is i cant backtrack what i did and the original files i used are lost.
Anybody? Hehe I really need to get to a computer soon ..
That's an easy fix.
Odin back to a stock 4.1.x, rooted or unrooted.
Then on first boot hold volume up + home button and to a factory reset. Done.
PS: make sure you're not running 4.3 OTA latest bootloader or you will get a semi reversible brick.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Ok awesome! Ill look up the odin stock guide on here....but you daid it jad tp be 4.1.x right? And what about updating it later on?
Also, as another option, what would I be able to flash it to to keep it in its current tmobile state but updated to a shiny new rom.
Your cwm is out of date.
Update your recovery at that error will go away when flashing
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
So ive succesfully fladhed back to stock att 4.1.1 and rooted it. Flashed in CWM Touch too. Now Im trying to update to a custom rom and its telling me that my device is a d2vzw in the recovery log then status 7. Any takes on that? Heres a screen.
Alright! All is well as I've finally gotten it flashed to gummy 4.4. Its running so smooth...thank you guys for the help!
