Best mobile hotspot (to game with)? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm getting stationed on Keesler Airforce Base tomorrow and I'm getting this laptop http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1F3NJX to game with. But my only source of internet at the moment is my 4G (which gets me poor gameplay, no PvP at all).
Some people here on Lackland AFB use a Clear Spot, which usually gets about 1MB down/up and somehow get decent gameplay. But if I could get better internet I'd do it, and I have no idea if Keesler gets 4G. I've looked at Verizon hotspots but they're like $50 for 4gigs and I would easily use 50+GB a month, compared to the Clear Spot which is $50 for unlimited.
But I guess my question is the title. Is there any mobile hotspots I could use that are affordable that I could use for adequate gaming? (Such as league of legends)

Well, welcome to keesler.
Depends on where your staying. There is 4G here. But CableOne is about it if your on base.
You can PM me if you want for more details.

You can try getting a hotspot device from virgin mobile like the Overdrive Pro. It's $35/month with unlimited 4G (wimax) speeds and 2gigs of 3G (CDMA rev. A). You can get it all this on prepaid. Five wifi devices can connected simultaneously to the hotspot. Just make sure you check if there's service/coverage at the base. Clearwire uses wimax as well if I'm correct.
I'm using the Overdrive Pro and speeds are amazingly fast. It really depends on coverage.

I'm off base......prior service. All you'll get in the dorms is CableOne I believe. But its not that good. But you will have 4G and if you have the hotspot hack you can tether 4G. Ask around in the dorms but I'm pretty sure that's about it.

I have Clear for my internet provider and it works pretty good at home but I do not receive 4g on my phone at the same location. Why is that?
For lack of better words, Sprint hasn't tapped into the backhaul of Clearwires 4g network yet on the cell tower that is feeding you your 4g on the computer. If you are getting 4g on your phone in other places around town, than its just a matter of time before Sprint integrates their services with clearwires 4g at your house.

Sweet.. I'm running cm6 with snap turbo.. I check xda everyday hoping they integrate it in asop some how.. so I wont know when clear and sprint merge their 4g
I can't wait to move... I'm gonna base my next home on my 4g signal.. lol I'm cheap and wanna use wifi tether to play on xbox live..

Incredibly slow 3g with full bars!!!

I just recently purchased an epic 4g touch on sprint with their unlimited plan and every where I go I usually get full bars but still can't go faster than 9kb/s once I hit around 30 but over been hearing people get around 200-300 anyone know what I can do to increase my speeds. Also note I don't have 4g in my area so that's not an option
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
That is normal Sprint speed....
But seriously, try going to a Sprint store. Checking your phone side by side with their model Epic 4G Touch.
Thanks I might try that gotta revert to a stock rom tho. Also my parents had crappy Samsung intercepts and i saw about 100-150 KB/s so it might be my phone

I think the signal bars prioritize 1x (aka 2G) for phone signal, rather than actual data speeds. I also heard signal strength isn't as big of a concern with CDMA as it is with GSM. (Meaning CDMA can reach farther, I think.)
Well is there anything I can do cause phone calls and texting work great its the data connection that slows down it took 2 solid days downloading to get grand theft auto 3 lol I really want this to work better for tethering I don't have wifi

Has Sprint's signal always been...lacking there? Or has it suddenly gotten that bad? My guess if it you used to have good speeds, then there must be an outage somewhere. You can try all of the 3G and 4G modifications to see if they work better. Also flashing each modem 1 by 1 and testing each one can help some. But overall, you wont see much of an improvement because signal usually has to do with Sprint's end.
Haven't tried flashing each modem but ive done modifications to my 3g settings ive even tried going into data programming and changing the port it connects to. Sprints coverage might have degraded out here it wasn't too great to begin with I get stuck in roaming alot lately
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Yep that's sprint for ya. They will tell you its because they have so many customers and all of them are abusing the network.
So I wonder how att and Verizon manage to have better speeds.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I just remembered. Sprint offers airaves to people with bad signal at home. An airave hooks up to your riuter or modem and broadcasts sprint signal within a few hundred feet. I'd suggest asking Sprint for one. I also heard you can use them as an upgrade line when you want a new phone. Lol

I can tell you why your getting terrible speeds... Its the people who tether their phones to play call of duty and for their daily internet connection on the computer.
Nothing we can do about it until sprint terminates some contracts early for violating the terms of service and refusal to comply.

I think I'm gonna set my phone to 24/7 roam on verizon to get my $10 worth then.
Not important to me. Neither is 3g for that matter. I spend 90% of the day within reach of wifi. And when I'm out and about, I don't mind the slow 3g speeds (500k). I don't do anything on my phone that is bandwidth intensive.

Actually the first month after the Epic's release date, Sprint store sales reps were telling customers the additional $10 was specifically for either using 4G or to bring 4G to your area within the next 6 months. That's the only reason I want 4G, the company allowed a huge amount of reps to sell the phone with that sales pitch. To try and quell the angst, Sprint implemented the charge across all "smart devices".
Closest 4G area is ~400mi away from me.
4G area is pointless in my area. I've rarely ever gotten it, and all it does is drain battery anyway. I'm curious to see how good LTE will be, and if it'll actually be in my area for once.

Wink wink. . . . nudge nudge. We all know the 10 dollars is for 4g no matter what Sprint calls it now. It ABSOLUTELY was for 4g service in the beginning before everyone complained and Sprint decided to just make everyone pay the fee, as the only phones that had to pay were 4g phones.
Ummm...cause it's fast. Being able to stream youtube, internet radio and HBO at my work desk is kind of awesome. Hope LTE is even better, and just as unlimited.

what keeps you with sprint

hey everyone..what keeps you with sprint!? the unlimited data and any mobile is great, but the data speeds and lack of 4g or LTE are kind of annoying...so what keeps y'all with sprint?! I Love the aformentioned perks, but I think verizon 4g lte in my area may tempt me to switch
Well I created a new plan with sprint [was on parents' plan] and I could have went anywhere. I went with sprint cuz of the data prices, and the overall price wasn't bad. Not gona go to at&t and verizon and get raped with data. Also LTE coming to my area is supposed to be heavy, so we will see.
Its cheaper then the other carriers. I get full signal on sprint everywhere I go in my area. It actually has unlimited data

15 years of loyalty to a company Carries a lot of weight when you know how to get the right person on the phone. for me no other provider can offer services products or discounts that can compare to a company rewarding your loyalty. Almost left a few years Ago when if seemed I could never talk to an American ( no offense intended ). Sprint has really done a 135° turn since then. Not quite there yet but doing better.

Wow

I bought a gn2 unlocked off craigslist for $450.00 cash.
Purchased a solavei wireless sim card.
60 bucks a month no throttle after any amount of data used.
Great coverage averaged 14 mbps down. Hmm with speeds like these hard to see how sprint stays with these guys.
For the first time in years I have been thinking of bouncing. From sprint to another Carrier . The blazing data speeds have me mezmerized. Solavei rides on tmobiles network. But at that price it may be worth a switch.
Bought the 2nd gn2 for a work phone. Gonna wait and see if sprint builds out the lte network in my area. But it's sad when I go back to my sprint gn2 and speeds won't pay 512 kbps on average.

HSPA+ ? Trust me even still in the dfw areas it's good averages 6 to 15Mbps. They don't need to roll out lte but normal consumers don't understand differences between 4g technology. And t mobile is truly using 3g but when pushed to its ultimate limits it hits 4g like speeds. But they don't people that obviously.but that's why gsm is so much better than cdma and other stuff too lol

I have tmobile and one of their major slogans sort of is "the only truly unlimited data plan". Ive used like 30 gigs of data the month I have owned my note 2 and have never been throttled. Usually get around 27mb 19 down. I notice no change in speed.

If Sprint were to release EvDo RevB or even RevC, it'd pull speeds of up to 30mbps, too. Problem is, lte becoming the new standard, it'll evolve the fastest and its cost efficient for Sprint in the long run (also cost efficient for any carrier.) This is why everyone's going to lte.

GSM certainly has its advantages, that's why I was with T-mobile previously. The HSPA is getting pretty fast at it's peak, but there are so many times when you don't get those numbers if you are in a heavily used area.
Having said that, I switched to Sprint because they are implementing the next wave of GSM (READ: LTE-A) before T-mobile will be finished with their GSM network (Read: HSPA+42)
