I am having an issue where, when I start voice recognition (Google Search, Voice Typing, Utter!, AutoVoice, doesn't matter), the little startup "start speaking" chime plays incorrectly (it sounds like it gets cut in the middle) or doesn't play at all, as well as the end voice recognition sound playing incorrectly. The only time it plays correctly is the first time after the phone rebooted, then very rarely after that. When it first started happening, I was running a ROM that was a combination of PA and CM. However I switched to the RootBox ROM a few days ago in hopes that it would be corrected, but sadly not. This has lead me to believe that maybe either PA or CM have a bug with regards to this issue, but I'm not sure. I haven't been able to find anyone else with this issue either here or on Google, hopefully someone has heard of this before, though. Any help is greatly appreciated!
EDIT: Did a quick record of my phone, attached it to this post (XDA doesn't support uploading audio files so I had to zip it).
As you can see, the first start up chime was perfect, but the end voice recognition sound sounds cut off in the middle. You can also hear multiple times when all you hear is the end recognition sound - this is where the start up chime didn't play at all.
Ok I hate bumping threads but it's been a week and no-one has even said if they're experiencing anything similar on an AOSP ROM. I do have new information, though - I did a clean flash to a fresh CleanRom, and the voice search chime played as it is supposed to. Did a clean install back to RootBox, and the sound glitch returned. So, it's definitely not a problem with the phone itself.

First everybody complained that the voice clip from the MSN was way too low. Even in the highest volume they couldn't understand me, everybody told me, and I was almost screaming.
Now I noticed that the video recording has the same problem: The volume is just too low.
Well, It was not like that a weeks ago and the voice notes seems OK, as I checked. I belive that it could be a software issue, after I installed an app, I guess.
Looked for and changed some "audiogain" registry entries but I fail.
So... help!
People, I flashed with the new ROM (the HTC_WWE_1.33.422.1_4.1.13.51_03.07.90_Ship.exe one) and the issue persists.
The ROM was clean and the problem described in the 1st post continued. So, I did a hard reset after that and nothing.
I don't think it is a hardware problem, 'cause people can hear me just fine during a call.
I'd like to ask for a solution again.
When listening to my voice mails on Google Voice I have to turn the phone volume all the way up and I still have a hard time hearing my messages. I was hoping the latest update would fix it, but to no avail...
Is anyone else having this issue?
BTW I'm running CM6 if that makes a difference.
i've always noticed that with gvoice, on any rom
So no fix for it out there that anyone is aware of?
This certainly is a strange issue indeed. Prior to the latest update, GV worked fine for me but now I can't hear anything just like you OP. Perhaps they broke something?
I had this happen a few times, so I spent some time trying to figure out how to repeatedly reproduce it. It wasn't too hard.
1) Turn on a youtube video (I think that anything that used the phone's loud speaker would work).
2) Turn your media volume up to max.
3) Hold down the search button to bring up Voice Search.
I suddenly hear static and garbled audio.
4) Cancel (because I only accidentally pressed that button in the first place)
and the static and garbled audio stays around.
After that, I can go to most any audio app (visual voicemail, music beta, pandora, etc) or just get a notification sound from my phone and it will be complete static and garbage.
The first time I fixed it by playing a voicemail via visual voicemail through the normal speaker and then changing it to the loud speaker. That doesn't work every time though. I'm guessing that a reboot would also fix this.
I tried to reproduce this on my other TMO SGS2 both with the Voice Search shipped with the phone and the update from the market. On the one phone it happens with both versions and on the other, it never happens. I'm not sure that this is a hardware issue but I don't have a good explanation either way.
I've tried this a few more times today with a number of different apps and Voice Search and it hasn't reproduced itself. Most apps, like Google Music and Pandora, stop audio output when Voice Search is activated. Only YouTube seems to just ignore the Voice Search and keep going.
Edit: I exchanged my phone and this doesn't happen on the new one. Seems like a bad hardware issue.
So I've been browsing the forums trying to look for anyone with a similar issue but to no avail. Now I'm not sure if this issue pertains to CM9 but I've noticed that ever since I've flashed RC1 or a later nightly, every app that uses the microphone reverts the phone speaker to call speaker. This is highly irritating as I have to put my ear to the phone every time I want to hear say, music, notifications etc. I usually reset this by plugging in a pair of headphones and then taking it back out, however the problem still persists every time I use the mic. This does not happen during calls so that's fine.
I am quite certain that this isn't hardware related because it only happens after using the microphone through some app and resets itself using the headphone workaround or a reboot. Again, I don't know if this is a singled out issue or if it pertains to the phone or the latest CM9 ROM.
Any help would be appreciated.
So after updating to RC2 and then again to the latest Nightly (20120802) I still have no luck with my loud speaker and my call speaker. To test this I usually use the Tune Me app and mess around with it and record some things but after using the app, instead of playing through the loud speaker like its supposed to, it plays audio through the call speaker.
Also, when I previewed CM10 and was playing around with Google Now with voice the same thing occurred. I don't know if there's a conflicting issue with some apps I've installed or something that installing the ROM did but any form of support would be appreciated.
Thanks.
I received my pixel a couple days after they became available. Most of the time it sounds decent, I have been using it daily for work WebEx stuff etc... At times if I play music or a game the speakers sound like they are blown, other times no issues. Today I made a video call on Google Hangouts with the default ringtone and it sounded like the left speaker was shot. I played a couple music tracks to see if I could hear any problems and it sounded fine? Anyone else having this problem?
Zip file included with a wav sample of what I am hearing.
Just a quick update, I called Google support and they asked me to hard reset it (typical). They could hear it over the phone, and had me reboot in safe mode still the same issue (also typical). It's weird it only seems to happen sometimes. They also offered to replace the device, but I don't believe it's a hardware issue. Hoping to hear if anyone else is experiencing this.
