Data tethering on s4 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

We used to have unlimited data tethering on s3.
This is Jovy's mods to get unrestricted tethering on s3.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057344
Today I was free so tried to follow the instruction on our phone to get it work. I am complete unknown to this stuff but from 10's of youtube video and web instruction I did decompile framework-res.apk. and funny thing is that I couldnt find arrays.xml inside res/values. I looked almost everything but no luck.
May be som1 can try it.

A lot of work for an an easy optional alternative.
. Try the APN backup and install App + tethering Widget. it worked on my S3 and Note 4 and I am hotspotted with it as I am sending this. Not sure where the threads are buried in these forums - but should not be hard to find. Real easy and only takes few minutes.
The modified APN so far may not support LTE, so make a backup of OEM APNs and revert to them when you do not need to tether - also real easy.

The APN change didn't work on the Note 2, I know because in my ROM "KillaJoule" I used the array method and it worked flawlessly.

does anyone have APN settings for the tmo gs4 that will get us past the tmobile's tether blocking?

Wireless tethering app that bypass carrier detection.

Hi, I've been looking for something like this for a while and tried pretty much all the options on google. And my last hope, PdaNet with FoxFi addon has failed me too, so I've pretty much run out of options.
So, what I'm looking for is to turn my GN into a wireless router without my network detecting that I'm doing so. A lot of the tethering apps out there can achieve this by enable Bluetooth or USB tethering, but that's not how I want it, I want to turn it into a wireless router. Sadly FoxFi fails everytime I try to enable it.
So any of you genius out there knows of an app that can do this, please share. Thank you so much in advance.

If you root and flash any custom rom, it has native built in tethering. As for unrooted apps u named them all
I actually have the AndroidME custom rom installed and have root. It does have the native tethering option, but I always thought that feature is detectable by the wireless carriers. Or have I been torturing myself this whole time? lol.
The native tethering app goes undetected for me when I use my laptop, but if I connect my ps3 to it, I get the redirect when trying to use the browser. None of the third party apps work on my Rom at all. Frustrating, but I've just gotten used to not using my ps3 online.

If your on tmobile Try this..
Create new APN
Settings, wireless and networks, more, access point names.
Name it some thing like "data" and under APN put "epc. T-Mobile.com" (no quotes)
Leave everything else blank and save, then set as default.
Profit
Hope this helps.. used to work on my amaze.
This always solved
the T-Mobile nag screen problem
If foxfi didn't work then there is a setting you need to ad to your APN settings.
I use the default tethering app in android and haven't had any problems.
What I did was make sure my APN type in my APN settings read the following with no spaces.
"default,supl,mms,dun"
You should be able to use the default tethering and hotspot with no problems after that.
Works on both stock and rooted devices across the board.
If your running jellybean, then you don't have to add "dun" but I add it anyway for good measure.
Happy tethering.
Thanks for the tips, gonna be moving to simple mobile next month and hopefully these tricks will work.

I could be wrong here, if you set the user agent of your desktop to a mobile browser signature, the carrier will only see mobile data and not tethered desktop data

I don't know which one of your fixes work but I did both and I now have wifi tethering using Fox-fi unrooted with my unlimited T-mobile 4g data plan! Thanks! Been searching for days on how to get it to work since I got my Nexus 7.
And it seems to work fine with the native hotspot app. I just downloaded an additional widget called Hotspot Toggle to make it easy to turn on and off.
Thanks again folks!
The easiest way is to use a User Agent Switcher.
You can read more details about it on here - http://gezby.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=69
Download "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Widget" and put that on a homescreen. A simple push of that icon will activate native tethering and bypass carrier check ups. Been using it for the last year with zero issues.
FWIW I've been using Native tethering since I first bought my VZW Nexus in December without a hitch. Since switching to T-Mobile I have also been using the Native tethering to my Nexus 7 without issue. I haven't used a tethering app since the gingerbread days

How To Tether on Jelly Bean?

Anyone know which program, since the JB 4.1.1 updated (AT&T SGH-I747) will allow tethering preferably both wifi and usb. I tried this one and can't get it to work with the Samsung S3 profile selected or the Galaxy Nexus GSM profile selected.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...roid.wifi.tether&feature=search_result#?t=W10
Don't think you can unless u root your phone. At&t doesn't allow it.

I'm rooted. That app I referenced specifically says you need a rooted phone. I just don't see the SSID come up on my notebook. I want something that can also tether USB too, as then I don't have to worry about locking down security on the Wifi or draining the phone battery.
What are the options if you root it?

Been searching for an hour now. Tried two other apps. Neither worked. (Neither said root was necessary). Not willing to pay for Foxfi just to see it not work. Elixir 2 people have used but I think this is all pre Jelly Bean, at least for the GSM (AT&T) version of this phone.
Seems maybe we have to wait. All the apps, videos, posts out there seem to be for ICS. Guess this is the downfall when you update within 24 hours of the update being released. Need to let the developers catch up.
I can confirm pdanet works....havent tried foxfi but im sure it does as well considering how similar they work...
Galaxy S III I747
Prior to update I was using FoxFi and it looks like it still works with Jelly Bean but I'm unable to get the Proxy Add-On to work since Jelly Bean.
Do you think I'll get caught tethering if I run FoxFi without the Add-On or does the Add-On only provide a false sense of security and is really not making a difference?
If it makes a difference, I'm on one of the old 2GB plans, not the new shared plans, but not unlimited either. Also, I'm stock, not rooted.
Finally, if you don't think this works, any suggestions that would work in this situation?
Thanks!

I was on the old 5GB plan (the one that allowed tethering) and switched to the new shared plan (since I don't do that much data but do call a lot and wanted the unlimited calling (saves me over a hundred bucks a month)) and on these plans they do allow tethering. From what I understand, you will need to have a rooted phone if you want to tether under any other (older) plan..

I guess we should be specific that we are looking for apps that not only work on JB 4.1.1 but also don't require a tethering or shared data plan. So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

No...you should have said "I have no clue what im doing so can you please explain every single detail to me?". WTF does a tethering plan have to do with you being able to tether or not if youre rooted? You need to disable to tethering provision via TB!

Not everyone on here has been on an Android phone and screwing with it all their lives. For example, what the heck is "TB" ? Don't assume everyone has as much experience as you, just because they are a participant on XDA. And I should also add on that requirement, NO CUSTOM ROM.
So an appropriate answer might be the following:
If you are on JB 4.1.1 and want to tether without a tethering plan from your carrier, and you are on the STOCK ROM. You need to do this, this, this and this. Or just post a frickin link to someone who DID take the time to explain it for the rest of us. Does your solution require rooting, or doesn't it. STATE IT. So future people when they search the forums, they don't find a bunch of misleading, dead-end solutions and/or bickering.
I just came from iPhone and I was a jailbreaker. I'm loving the S3 and Jelly Bean. But on the iPhone, I'd jailbreak (equivalent of rooting on Android), install MyWiFi, and DONE and DONE. It seems this was how it was on ICS with this phone. Now on JB, not so simple. There's dozens of posts on several threads on several forums around the Internet of people no longer getting their tethering app to work since JB upgrade. These are both rooted and non-rooted, but they are all STOCK JB ROMs.
So please, tell us the trick to get a stock JB 4.1.1 ROM SGH-I747 AT&T to tether without the plan. We are all ears!

Not sure as I've been to busy with my real life outside of XDA to spend hours reading and reading posts.
Bottom line, if there was an app you can just download and install for ICS before that worked, isn't it just a matter of time until someone publishes an app on Google Play (may require rooting, big deal) that does the same without a bunch of workarounds and crap.
Look one post above yours
Install that zip file via CWM(clockworkmodrecovery)....then download TITANIUM BACKUP (TB...you need the pro version...you can download lucky patcher for that) and go in and freeze the tethering provision app. This will allow you to tether without your carrier knowing...kindof...
P.S. ICS was the same protocol. You have to freeze the tethering provision...
Galaxy S III I747
Thank you. I've got Titanium Backup installed now. So should I just use the built-in AT&T tethering app now or is it 'safer' to use something else?
Found it.
Still no love. CW Recovery and Team Epic Root Installed. TB Pro installed. Tethering Provisioning Uninstalled.
Tried to Tethering Apps on Google Play, neither work. "Free USB Tethering App" and "Wifi Tethering for Root" (tried Auto and Samsung S3 profiles). No Dice. Thought there was an native AT&T app but may have uninstalled it with TB when cleaning out bloatware.
SGH-I747 AT&T
Okay, duh, I found the Tether toggle in Advanced Settings. I also found a couple tether apps that don't require root that actually came up on the network, but I get 'Limited' connectivity indication in Windows with no Internet access.
Now get this, whenever I go into Settings > Advanced > Tether if I toggle it on or off or toggle USB sharing on, I get the message "Settings application has stopped working" Some of the tethering apps also "stop working" when I try to run them even though I see the blue tether notification icon in the status bar and I can see the SSID on the network and connect, but it is as if the phones ability to bridge the wifi hotspot it is providing to the 4G Internet connection is broke.
****. Do I need to load Kies and to a stock firmware restore, or is that not even possible not that I have CW recovery installed. I really really didn't want to get into this Android tweaking Hell and now I'm there. Another wasted frickin weekend! Maybe I'll just go back to iPhone. Hopefully the iOS 6 jailbreak is out now (untethered).
Kind of ticked up about being lead down the road that indicated just freezing the tethering provisioning was the solution to all my woes. Maybe it worked for some (are you on JB 4.1.1 with AT&T SGH-I747???) but not me. After a couple more hours of searching and searching, including all sorts of YouTube videos showing using FoxFi, Wifi Tether for Root, etc, and then a lot of recent comments about it nor working. Anyways.....
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

YouTube Video on it here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.

Thank you so much! To make things even more confusing when I was using cyanogenmod 10 rom mms was working perfectly, however I found the rom to be buggy, VERY SLOW and all around confusing. So I figured if I used the apn-conf.xml from that and put it in jellybreads apn-conf.xml (despite cgm's being sprit) ot should work! No dice. Ill give yours a shot n let you know how it goes. well that apn work specifically for jellybread. Ive been searching for as i said 3 days for a simple custom rom that was stable and fast and fully functional (Minus 4g :,-() . all of them seemed to have major flaws, slow and bloated, threw my phone in a loop, far too many options confusing me.
but for wimax I'm convinced that since I have 4g included in my plan for cricket if i could figure out the right settings in qpst I could get on 4g too. Id probably get a heart attack though from excitement. Ive seen youtube videos for it but i could only hope. ill try posting a new thread for that though.

The other cricket users of JellyBread and Kendallc123 herself may be as ecstatic as you if you can get 4g working with cricket, but you should link to this in the JellyBread thread so that the cricket users there see it. Also I'd thank user/dev Wambo_Bomb, since he is the one who left me that APN when he gave me his old Evo.
i spoke too soon. my phone said the message was sent, which before it wasn't even doing that but they aren't getting the pictures on the receiving phone. back to trying out different roms :,-(
though i despise having 2 different numbers for messaging and despise having a app for text and another for mms i suppose i can just use my text free account from pinger for images and my phone for text. obnoxious but it is a work around i suppose.

Cricket 4g will never work on the og. The reason is simple cricket 4g is lte while the og is wimax. Now as far as mms that will work but you have to make changes to the apn. I have attached one that I know works but you will have to edit the username in the apn. Unlike most carriers each cricket user has a unique user name. It is your phone number here is an example ( [email protected]). Easiest way way to do this is get apn backup and restore from playstore. Backup your current apn and then copy this one into the apnbackup folder that was created and edit the username. Turn on airplane mode delete apn then restore the cricket_sprint.XML file. Reboot phone and turn off airplane mode.
As long as your settings are correct in qpst then this will get your mms working. If you need further help feel free to pm me.

thank you for the link ill give it a shot. as i said before I've tried MANY apn settings so i do know how to do it. every apn ive tried for cricket or metropcs though has had different numbers in the other lines. (NOT the MDN line, i know you have to put your number in the mdn line) My settings in qpst have to be correct or internet wouldn't be working as well, because as I said the cryogenmod 10 rom was the only rom that mms, (and everything eles worked) for even though the apn was set to sprit. (makes no sense to me but it worked) But the rom was pretty much unusable on my phone with how much battery it drained, (2 and a half hours and the batter was gone) how slow it was, (cpu usage was constantly at 998mhz) and the rom was all around confusing for someone SOMEWHAT new to this stuff with too many options i didn't understand.
I think its something other than apn settings because the cryogenmod rom worked for mms and internet though the apn was set to sprint. all other roms ive tried has had either sms not working and/or mms not working and/or phone not working and/or contact lists not working something for the basic phone functions causes force close errors with all other mods.
once again it didn't work. the pictures say sent but are not being recived by the person im sending them too. SMS that are too long and converted to MMS come arcoss as code to the person they are sent too. I dont understand why one rom with sprint apn settings would work but this one wont. is it possible for roms to change qpst settings? i cant tell anymore though as i cant enter diagnostic mode.

- Go to backup/restore tab
- Find APN Backup & Restore on the list
- Long press on the app when you find it
- Select Convert to system app
Now ..
- Open APN Backup & Restore
- Click menu and disable ICS check
- Close program and re-open it. - ( No More Warring! )
- Choose: Backup APN's! - ( This Will make a backup! )
- Close APN Backup & Restore
- On a computer locate your APN backup you created and open it in a text editor and find the pcweb.tmobile.com and replace it with fast.t-mobile.com
- Now Open APN Backup & Restore
- And pick Delete APN's - ( Not Delete Backup Files! LOL )
- Now Pick Restore APS's
- A List Comes Up .. Pick the backup you created and edited previously
- Let it restore .. Close APN Backup.
Step 3 go to the native hotspot and try to tether, it will try to upsell you that is expected decline as usual
Now go to your APN list in settings you should see a new APN called tethering that can be edited
Step 4 edit the pcweb.tmobile.com portion of the apn to fast.t-mobile.com
Step 5 open titanium backup and freeze the tethering provision (this will break the native hotspot enabling in settings, this is expected)
Step 6 download Chainfires hotspot control https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.hotspotcontrol&hl=en launch it and press enable access point
At this point the hotspot should enable, the control app itself may crash that is fine, you can now access the settings to change the access point name and security via the menu bar and the settings will stick.
This worked for me hopefully it works for others please let me know and feel free to ask questions, if someone wants to clean this up a bit feel free
EDIT: I do want to mention I did the XML edits from that the post linked on Step 2 to unhide the tmobile tethering APN so please let me know if the instructions fail I may need to incorporate that as well essentially somehow I made the native tethering ignore the hidden apn and start creating its own which is what allows this to be successful

My testing says at first boot these are hard coded to the system. I'm not able to get settings to stick post boot. Change these before flashing your rom and it should be permanent.
This changes routing overall, its permanent and even though you get an error in settings works fine if you toggle from the taskbar.

the only difference is any references to epc.tmobile.com I instead used fast.t-mobile.com
Thanks so much just what I was looking for, works great.
Thanks, I'll try it tonight or so.
Please let me know. It works for me but may need some fine tuning.

Thanks for the confirmation!
It isn't the cleanest method but hey if it works it works right?
Glad I could help!
Yeah, my only reason for rooting this time was for free tethering.

Watch out, the tether APN was readded. You can check by backing up apns and notice a hiddent addition.
I froze tetherprovision and it now stays away.

Anyone get VPN working? Mine stops routing when I connect.

I just use Chrome and a ui changer. Step 5 in my instructions above does indicate to freeze tethering provision for the reason of stopping the user agents getting re-added.

Would this method allow full tethering to lets say a PS3 or XBox?

Yes but it can also get you flagged and they will block it. It's hit and miss but my buddy tethers with his xbox all the time.

Sorry for the noob question: Does this have any benefit for those on the 500mb or 2.5gb plan? Based on what's being changed, I'm assuming this only benefits those on Unlimited data plans who want to use more than 2.5gb while tethering.

You are correct. This is for when you need to go past 500mb or past 2.5GB on tethering.

It might benefit if tethering is stopped vs throttled.
Thanks so much op. My note 3 has been collecting dust since Monday because I couldn't find a way to tether using my $20 unlimited plan. This works perfectly and now I can retire my note 2 to craigslist.
Thanks so much. This worked perfectly
Any of you ever tried the easytether app? Been using that for a long time now. Never once used the native one

TMobile or the Note 3 software itserlf, is doing some serious throttling.
When im not tethering, I get a serious throttle of slow data when using any Torrent app on the phone it self.
As for tethering, I tried multiple methods from the method in this thread, to PDANet using USB, and after about 5 minutes of constant tethering, my data is slowed down to almost dial up speed.
I get good LTE coverage in my area. Speed tests range from 5Megs to 15Megs down.
From the looks of it, there probably wont be any full proof torrenting or tethering until some good roms start to develop.
Especially if we get a pure AOSP rom. That will help on whatever firewall is currently installed on the phone.

Strange I haven't had any throttling issues. I've only downloaded a gig so far but it was a gig without issue.

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this. hypersonicx, are you rooted, and XmentalX, are you not rooted? My phone is rooted and i'm getting horrible torrenting speeds, my brother is not rooted and he gets great speeds.

[Q] How to Get Around T-Mobile Hotspot

Ok, I know I have seen a few threads about this but nothing conclusive or, dare I say, noob friendly as to how to resolve it. So I am asking here. My roommate has moved out leaving me with a few weeks of having to rely on my phone for internet. I am currently running Infamous v.8 and by using Hotspot Shield Free and Wifi Tether TrevE I can hotspot tether for a limited about of data before I have to wait about 6 hours or so. I am looking to find a way to just hotspot tether natively without using apps and without getting the T-mobile screen. I have used many roms including the Carbon KitKat rom using dalvik but still get the T-mobile screen, if the computer connects at all.
I have heard about some libs you can push to get tethering to work, but having never done that, I would need some detailed instructions.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Do this it works on the att s4 using the built in native hotspot feature
First go to settings applications /manager /all
Your tmobile s4 may not have the native hotspot feature but if does this step is critical for it to work...
Find the hotspot app disable it .
Next go to any root browser tool and go to prefer rom toolbox lite.
Go to System/app find tetheringprovsion.apk rename it to tetheringprovision.bak
Rename the tetherprovision.odex
To tetherprovision.bak2
Download the modified tether provision apk from the att s4 general forum. and copy it into sytem/app folder same folder you renamed the others.
reboot phone and then after reboot.
Go back to settings apllication manager/all
and re enable hotspot
Then you can tether .

I know some ROM's that have tethering and portable hotspot built in. On my old Samsung Relay had a Clockwork mod, and when I went to settings, more - there was an area for tethering and portable hotspot and it ran just like it was a normal function included with the phone. Loved it.
So check the different rom's out there some should have the same thing.
