***UPDATE****
I suspect the problem originates from a corrupted efs file. *#06# gives null/null for IMEI. I need to find a way to re-write the original IMEI (I know it).
Hi,
I've got a Galaxy Note II I need to get serviced. The issue is it cannot read a SIM card.
The device was rooted by somebody else (not me) so I have no idea what they've done. There is no nandroid backup.
When in Download Mode, it says custom, and under phone status, it displays 'modified'
I've attempted CFs method to re-root and reinstall stock recovery, using triangle-away, unrooting and restoring, but it still shows modified.
Everytime I use triangle away, it says it's unable to display flash counter, but when use triangle away to get to recovery, it displays a flash counter of 1. Every time I've tried this, it's still the case.
What can I do to fix this? I'm currently in the process of using the noteII toolkit to try and restore to factory, root, reset counter, unroot and restore, hopefully it can fix it.
is there something I'm missing? Help is appreciated.
I used traingle away but when ta reboots the phone and you have to push volume up to reset it after you press up wait for screen to go blank and pull battery before phone starts again. The put battery back in hold home volume down and power to get into download mode. Use odin to flash stock fimware and after phone restarts it will have no on counter but still say custom or modified but just do a factory reset from stock recovery then it will be good to go.

Agreed on the Odin of a stock build. .
Without knowing its history, we can't get you the steps back other than the odin method.
Odin will repair the issue as stated above. ..g

1.Flash root injected from link above choose Rogers one.
2. Install triangle away.
3. Run Triangle away ( dont worry if it shows 1 just ignore it.)
4. Run super user and unroot your phone.
5. Reboot to stock recovery and perform factory reset twice.
6. Boot phone to download mode and check if phone resets to official and Samsung status.

I've followed this exactly, but when I boot to DL mode, it still shows Custom for the software (Bootloader is Samsung official) (Yes, I've done factory reset after, still shows Custom/Modified)
Trying again with the older OS version, hopefully that will make a difference?

Older ROoted ROM did not boot... hmm....Same with the older root-injected ROM.
Any thoughts? All methods above didn't work.

Does your counter resets to 0 except for bottom shows modified? Just wondering if you use free unlock method before.

Everytime I load Triangle Away on the root-injected stock rom, it is unable to determine Flash counter. I have to use TA to boot into the recovery mode TA uses, then it always shows at LEAST 1 (only more than one if I have flashed a new recovery).
When I reset flash counter, it still shows Custom on DL mode, and modified under device status. If I re-install TA, it still shows 1 on the flash counter.
I don't know if it has been unlocked or not, as I mentioned, I'm not the one who originally rooted it, and have no way of finding out. I'm just trying to return to official so it can be serviced.
Another thought, are there any residual files or something that could be left on the device that trigger the device status?
I've now tried the factory rooted ROM/Recovery/TA/uninstall/unroot/restore/restore method many times, and always still shows custom/modified/flash counter of 1.
What about the TA workaround? How does this work?
I ran it, rebooted, it still shows modified. From there I assume I should uninstall TA/unroot then wipe?
Under DL mode, Customer Binary download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom

I wouldnt worry about TA showing flash counter 1 all you need to check is under download mode if evereything resets there. After running ta unroot using superuser. Reboot to stock recovery and do factory reset and flash regular stock rom with no root. Go back to to stock recovery and do another factory reset.

Other potentially relevent info:
IMEI/IMEI SV in status shows "Unknown"
After installing the Rogers stock OS, Build number is: JZ054K.1317MVLBMA3
Baseband version: Unknown.
Seems the Unknown IMEI is the culprit. Can't believe I didn't look there first. I'm guessing that opened up a whole new can of worms. Any way around that at all? I know the original IMEI? Possible to modify an efs file to have the existing IMEI?

Everything resets in DL mode except device status (Still shows custom, and modified under device status in About),
Now, The rooted rom I'm using has SuperSU instead of superuser, does that matter?

I've determined the issue is a damaged efs partition. Ikeep getting null/null when hitting *#06#, and under status it shows unknown for IMEI/IMEI SV.
Please close thread, I'll be looking for a solution to that.

Can you please post your findings on how to fix/repair/rebuild/regenerate... the efs partition. I too suspect the same problem with my device and would like to give that a shot to try and revive my phone. For me *#06# shows my IMEI and my baseband but it just won't connect to network or get out of the Airplane Mode. I've flashed the stock ROM and modem - still nothing.
I dont think anyone has got there imei back on note 2

If your phone is rooted ( I assume it is), using something like ES file manager, or ROot manager, check out your EFS folder (located at the root of the phone), Mine's empty, therefore I get null/null. If you're still showing IMEI, good chance just your nv_data file is corrupt, or it could be something as simple as a bad radio?

Hey thanks for replying - I forgot to update: I had a QCN which I backed up (too late in the process and I still suspect it might have issue) but I restored that and flashed 4.1.1 stock again - finally I was out of the Airplane Mode but still no signal. Left the phone overnight and woke up today to find it connected to Rogers with just 1 bar signal strenght. Been carrying the phone with it, especially through areas with good reception and its still at 1-2 bars max. So NOW the issue is poor reception...any suggestions on that?

I realize this may have been asked before and if so i want to apologize in advance. First off Im an android NOOB. Long time iphone user and jailbreaker. Anyhow, I rooted my ATT Samsung Galaxy note 2 with CWM6, I also made a backup after installing this from inside recovery. I believe that is what its called anyhow. I then tryed Jedi X and CleanRom 3.0.1. After giving these 2 a try I realized I prefer stock and set out to go back to that. I followed all the instruction that are listed on the pages within XDA. Ran triangle away and removed SU. After reboot Im still sitting in a modified status.
Now according to Triangle Away documentation this can happen. And I need to install a stock firmware. Im currently downloading that from a link on this site.
I re-rooted and installed triangle away.
My question is what order should everuthing be done? Im guessing, 1, flash stock recovery. 2, run triangle away, Uninstall SuperSU 4 flash factory firmware. Is this correct? Also, how do I flash factory firmware? Do I use factory recovery mode to do this?
Thanks so much for the help in advance.
By flashing factory firmware you are tripping the counter again. If you are already on stock firmware and just rooted look here.
1. Factory reset
2. Restore stock rooted backup

Flashing a stock rom through Odin does not trip the counter
Sent from my Bell Note II
If you do triangle away, then go into download mode, then flash stock rom you will trip the counter.... you should have stock rom on before triangle away. Then triangle away. Then unroot.

Ok I did this. Then went to odin mode here is what it says
Custom Binary Download : no
Current Binary: Samsung official
System Status: official.
Device status in settings still says modified. I have no root, no TA and stock recovery this stuff is driving me batty.
Edit. I just tried to go into stock recovery by volume up, home and power. It DOES not go to whatever menu is there. It just boots.

Stock recovery should work..... If not try cf root again. That restores stock
Anyways you need to factory reset to change modify to official.
I suggest you dont factory reset unless you need to return it, You may decide to root again as I did.

Yea, I tried to factory reset, but i was missing the stock recovery so it went into a boot loop. I battery pulled and booted odin and reinstalled factory recovery, using cf-auto root. Here is my question. Everytime I factory reset it auto installs SuperSU. WTH is going on here
What is the downside of staying rooted? Can I still get updates? Maybe not OTA but some how?
Did you go into supersu do full unroot then factory reset?
Being rooted only affects renting and buying from play store and ota updates.
Upside of rooting... having newest firmware before everone else

The very first time I rooted with cwm6 the tutoril said to make a backup of those settings. Is it possible that when I perform the reset with stock recovery that it is reflashing supersu? Because that is what im seeing on my end. Weird thing is that odin mode still shows 0 flashes but cant get rid of supersu it just comes back after reset.

if you're still stuck, consider the using the method i followed in post 51 in the cf root thread (steps 2-8). ignore step 1 if you don't have a custom recovery (e.g., CWM or TWRP). i've followed the steps listed in that post on 4 different devices and it's worked every time. good luck, hope you get this resolved.
Did you go into supersu and click full unroot thats the last step.
Then you can facrory reset in stock recovery.

Ive followed your direction. I have no custom recovery. Odin download mode still shows official with no counts of flashes.
After bootup I still have SuperSu.
I have done complete unroot with superSu so many times its not funny. Each time I do the unroot I go and do a factory reset. And after every reset it restores root. Under device status it says modified, but Odin says im good. Can I do OTA in this status?
I shouldnt say it restored root after factory reset but it does restore supersu.
After you do full unroot go to play store and unistall all supersu supersu pro super user etc. Then factory reset.
Also take a screenshot of your device app drawer after you factory reset.

Wanting to get rid of all things root on my phone I went througj and deleted everything resembling root apps. Then rebooted. Check device settings and it says NORMAL!!! I dont know which app or what was causing it and I dont care. It is back to normal. Thanks for all your help last night.
No problem please don't make this a reason you dont root in the future. I learned the hard way like you did with help from the good people here. Im sure you will be alot more successful on the next go around.

Hi everyone,
I just bought the Allshare Cast hub and it wont stay connected for more 20 secs then says end connection...
I rooted my Tmobile GN2 to TWRP with Odin. I know that I have to use Triangle Away to reset the binary counter to 0 in order for Allshare Cast Hub to work. I already ran the Triangle Away app and reset the binary counter; However, the binary counter still says 1. I did run TA 2 times, but the results were still the same. Some people did get their binary counter to 0 after reseting it with TA.
Is there any reason why mine CANT be reset to 0?
Can someone point me to the right direction please?
I'm very noob on rooting stuff, please help,
Thank you very much for your and for your time.

Honestly, I'm not even sure. I followed the youtube video and it has links to the odin files. it has a bunch of GN2 versions to select during the Odin rooting process. is there anyway I can find out if I have any of the above you mentioned? If mine has any of the above, is there a way to make my phone not on custom rom, kernel, or recovery?

twrp could be the problem.
it's just really random.
2 more things you could try:
use the note 2 toolkit(I'm sure it's somewhere in the development sections here) to flash the stock recovery.
or use sysscope blaster (xposed module) to set the flash counter to 0(use it together with triangle away)
Boot you phone in recovery mode can googel it how to Press Volume Up +menu+power button release the buttons as soon as you N7100
or you got plenty of you tube Videos let mw what does it say on this CWM, TWRP,Philz

recovery is used to make full system backups and installing updates/roms as zip files.
it's ok to use the stock recovery if you don't install too many odd mods.
it won't affect root, and you should just follow the instructions in the toolbox screen.

I ran the GN2 Toolkit and it has a bunch of options.
one of them says "Reflashing Stock Recovery Via Odin"
Is this the right option that I need?
Also, do i need to unroot 1st before doing it?
I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but I love GN2 and I cant afford another one because of my noob mistakes.

there is no need to unroot, and yes that is the right option.

Thats because when u root by cf autoroot or whatever, it uses a "custom recovery" for few secs to root your device and after that it changes back to stock but samsung detects those few secs and it raises your binary counter to 1.. and now u want to reset your binary counter so u have downloaded + installed the app...
Ta uses also a "custom recovery" to reset your counter. After resetting it (0), your recovery changes back to your current recovery may it be stock samsung or cmw doesnt mather but when u reboot samsung detects that also and raises back to 1
Thats why when people want to unroot their phone and t use Triangle away..
They follow the following steps
While resetting the counter it asks u to reboot.. dont let the phone directly boot up (so samsung doesnt detects anything custom and counter stays 1)
And go directly to download ODIN mode.. now open odin and flash stock rom. This way you would perfectly unroot your phone..
Ps: counter 0 and root is possible by prerooted roms.. but counter 0 + custom recovery is impossible imo (maybe im wrong xd)

Therefore, I decided to try your methods by running TA 1st to reset the binary counter and let it boot into Odin downloading mode. hmmm, that's interesting. No, I have not tried to run allshare cast yet after I reflashed stock recovery.
Alot of people said that it wont work when the binary counter is 1 or greater. Thats the reason I didnt try the allshare cast.
I will run Allshare Cast when I get home from work.
What does your phone status say? Modified or Normal?
as i said in my first reply, allshare cast is very random.
initially it worked only if i used a stock recovery, while my counter was at 1.
somehow it started working later on using CWM.
then it stopped working, but running triangle-away fixed it(even though it changed nothing)
my counter should still be at 1, but because i use sysscope blaster android thinks it's at 0.

Furthermore, I was able to reset the binary counter with TA, then instead of letting it reboot, I went into Odin Downloading Mode, used Odin software to reflashed the stock recovery. Sadly, the problem is still exist: my phone status still says modified and wont work with Allshare Cast.... I'm afraid I'll have to unroot it unless someone can help me out. this allshare Cast crap starts to piss me off!
I think I deleted a few bloatwares before.
are all my settings, apps etc going to be deleted/reset after I unroot my phone?

I have had a galaxy note 2 for about 6 months on Vodafone UK N7100.
Today while i was at work i felt something hot in my pocket, my phone was very hot (i was not doing anything with it) The phone was stuck on the Samsung boot screen.
After a few minutes of looking at this i realised it was stuck and removed the battery. SInce then i have been unable to get past the boot screen, i can't get into download mode or reboot mode. The only things to note. When i turn my phone on a red light flashes. When i plug my charger in the charge icon appears on screen but it does not charge.
Really hoping somebody can help.
I had rooted my phone if that helps (it did not cause this problem and has been functioning rooted for months)

this would be your last hope http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32273406&postcount=5 follow the guide properly marked in red and remember to tick re partition in odin, if this doesnt work then your phone has been affected by sds due to 4.1.1 rom so u need to take it to service for motherboard replacement which is borne by samsung so no worries, and remember never to use a 4.1.1 rom in note 2 get the 4.1.2 rom or rather they will install that only this time and in future just go through dr.ketan thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696 here it will guide you perfect instead following some untidy guides
for odin use 3.04 it works great though i havent tried new version as 3.04 works great you will get it in ketan thread

Thanks for the advice i am downloading the file now.
I did not manage to install the rom i suggested i was using so i don't think that could have been the issue. My phone just seemed to get hot then stop working, i hope as you suggested it is not my motherboard. Did you say that i should still be covered by the warrenty even though i had rooted my device?

well your reply is quite confusing
1.did you manage to flash the rom with pit in odin. was it successful or you get any errors
2.does your phone start now
3.if not then your phone has died and it needs to be taken to service guys ,but just check what the status of your phone in download mode is it official or custom . if its official then no worries just go ahead and take it to service guys and tell them abt your issue that the phone stopped working while in pocket dont info them that you rooted it ever just make them blv that it was a sds caused by 4.1.1 rom so they replace it free.
i mean your motherboard
Sorry if i am confusing matters.
I did not manage to flash anything it was just coming up with failed no PIT partition.
Current binary samsung official
My system status is custom
Are these ok to return my phone with?
I decided to take the advice offered and download the recovery but got confused.
Do i need all of the files from that link or just 1?
I downloaded the first one N7100XXDMB2_Factory
It contained
boot
cache
hidden
modem.bin
recovery
sboot.bin
system
tz
None of these are the md5 format
i am now thinking i should have downloaded XXDLJ2_OXA_Factory
Is that correct or was i right with the first file. If i was right downloading the first file then where do i get the md5 files required for odin to do my factory restore.
Know these are very noobish questions just doint want to do anything wrong
In answers to your questions....
1) Did i manage to flash the rom with it in odin
No
I got confused which files i should be using and did not want to do anything without being sure
2) My phone does not start
3) When i am in download mode my phone shows
Current binary Samsung official
My system status is custom

If your phone doesn't have a partition map, then no, you can't.
You can try, as a last resort, using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43760271&postcount=22
I had a similar problem not too long ago (although it started with all apps crashing and then stuck at bootscreen) and managed to fix my phone.

EFS is a part of the system that stores your serial number, IMEI and everything related to your phone specifically. You are generally able to back it up using a custom recovery or using software on your PC while the phone is rooted and booted on the android OS. Since you cannot boot into recovery and also can't boot into android itself, I don't think you would be able to back it up.
If you ever installed a custom rom with AROMA, there is a chance you have it backed up already. But if you don't explicitly remember...

I honestly don't know, but you mentioned your problems started when you flashed Philz Recovery... the logical course of action would be to revert to a different recovery and completely eliminate the recovery as being part of the problem.

ok i did that and i installed the stock rom everything back to stock and when the phone starts it doesn't give me the welcome screen it gives me as if i did a regular install and a square pops up with yellow letters telling me the phones info i cant get rid of it either unless i delete the phone test fb.apk, then i still have the power button doesn't show me restart, ect. and the lock screen wont work it will turn off but when i turn back on it goes back to the main screen the lock screen wont come up, not even if i put a pin for it to lock. What if i install the canada version stock and then re-install the usa version will that make it work or will that brick the phone ? thanks for atleast answering.

This is going a bit over my head, talking about the pit file and all... I will say that it probably wouldn't be advisable to flash the Canadian tar, but but any farther than that I'm not sure.
One thing I would say from my personal experience the other day, I used Odin to go back to stock while using a TouchWiz ROM... Odin said it was successful, I had stock recovery again, but when I booted the phone and went into stock TW, all my data was still there, I still had root, all my settings were the same, etc. I flashed custom recovery again, did a full wipe, and flashed a CM ROM. After doing all that, I again tried to revert to stock using Odin. That time, all data was removed and it was just like I had unboxed the phone for the 1st time (save a flash count or two) and it was all good to go. As odd as it may sound, I'd say flash something non-TW, then start the Odin process again.

ODIN
Using these files found here and following these directions:

I have tried to do it 2x like the 2nd method also. I have the following results
I have terrible signal with the NK1 and want to use the newest. Anyone have some advice? I am basically a born again n00b here,.
Thanks
Make a Nandroid backup. Before using Odin, turn off phone, remove battery for 10 seconds the reassemble and boot straight into download mode and flash the stock firmware. The modem and boot loader then sticks. Odin the latest TWRP and boot into it and restore your backup. Use Phone Info again to confirm.
Flash the full stock image. It is easier.
I used those files and worked for me on the 1st try.. i used odin v3.09,
Might have to Odin the full firmware. I also have it on my site if needed,
Thx guys....trying it now.

Ok, I made a backup, used odin to flash the stock firmware, but I didn't need to restore my backup because after the odin successfully flashed and the phone restarted, all my data was still there. No changes. Still on the same baseband as the picture above.

Did you turn the phone off after the backup, pull the battery for 10 seconds, then boot directly into download mode, and then ODIN?

I made the backup, then booted the phone back up to android because I then transferred the backup from my micro SD card to my pc to be safe. Turned phone off, took battery out, sat 15mins, then booted to Odin and flashed then5.0 firmware from sammobile.com. Is it mandatory to pull battery while still in twrp right after the backup?
Here's what I have after what I just did. Bootloader and baseband will not update. I am getting dropped calls one out of 3 calls recently and data connection drops and stops at time also. Wifi and cellular. Just horrible.

No, that should have worked. The other method is to install Triangle Away by Chainfire from the Play Store, then run it to reset the flash counter. It boots into a special recovery. After it is done, do not reboot. Pull the battery and then boot into Download mode for ODIN.

I did notice when booting my phone says "write protection" enabled. Not sure if that is a problem. I have flashed tons of roms. Is that why it's not taking? I will try the new method you mentioned here soon. Thank you for helping. I will reply when I do it.
I also had same problem when I was upgrading from KK 4.4.2 to LP 5.0. When I flashed the stock ROM, the bootloader and modem didn't change. I had put the phone in download mode and odin them separately couple times before it sticks. I read somewhere in a thread, sometimes you had to do it a few times.
Well after using triangle away it worked. Odd though, triangle away never booted into the "special recovery" and when the phone restarted, it had errors saying "system couldn't start" but after booting to recovery and re flashing stock firmware via odin. I have this now.
Thanks guys.
