I can't help you, but I'm just letting you know you're not alone. Mine did that a couple of times when I was on some CM 10.1 nightlies. The phone would just shut off. I thought maybe it was just a SOD on black screen, but one time I caught it flash the Samsung logo, and then shut off. I had to press and hold the power button to turn it back on. Strange indeed. I don't know what caused it, but I would like to know. I use my phone as my alarm, and if it would shut off during the night that would not be good for the morning.
You'd get much more input if you were on a Rom on xda.
This is why I won't use a few roms....jellybam, carbon....at least until there is a dev thread on it....and a couple others.
Just my two cents!

Exact same thing with me...even the logo every once in a while...I just factory restore to stock rom with no root and no problem so its something with the software

It can be the software or the hardware. My phone keeps rebooting even though I reverted back to stock.
I'm getting the same issue with the random shutdowns. I'm on PAC-man rom. The few times I noticed that it happened was when the screen shutdown while an app was active.

I heard it could be something to do with the sd cards partitions...

My G-Nex has been shutting off or rebooting randomly.
It started happening the other day. I'm on liquid smooth 1.4.
the resetting only happens when the screen is off, and never happens when the phone is plugged in.
any thoughts? ideas? need more info?
any help is much appreciated.
My guess would be a rom and/or kernel issue. Flash a different rom or go back to stock and see if the problem persists.

It might just be the graphical shell crashing. Its happened to me before while listening to music and the music didn't stop.

hasn't happened to me when doing anything musical... any advice?
Just to clarify... phone is completely shutting off. When I hold the power button down it starts to boot up. No battery pull necessary

i wiped all data and reinstalled liquid, and it happened again.
incredibly frustrating.
will now just go back to stock.
Just to update in case anyone cares... I have not experienced the issue since swapping my extended battery for the stock battery... which I tried before going back to stock.
So, at least for now, the battery appears to have been the issue. Question is why?

So I noticed this a few days ago. I have the screen set to time out after 30 seconds. It will work for a while and then it will no longer time out. If i reboot the phone everything goes back to working order. Ive tried this with and without smart stay on and got the same results. I do not have any applications installed that would cause the screen not to time out, plus it works from time to time. Any ideas as to why it may be doing this?
This has been happening to me lately too... Don't really know what could it be.

Yes I'd also like to know as it is a bit annoying and killing my battery if I dont catch it!
This used to happen to me too. I even returned phone and it started happening again. This seems to be a bug. I flashed a new rom and it never happened again

I have a heck of a time getting the device to turn on using the power button. It's as if the button is recessed a bit...it's hard to press in an awkward place.
Also, I've left the device a few times for long stretches to find that I need to boot it up to turn it on. It powered completely down on its own.
I love it, though; definitely not disappointed.

I don't experience reboots waking up the device but i've had the tablet reboot on me once today while watching a netflix video. It also rebooted three times yesterday while chromecasting.
I've been getting random reboots but no problems waking the device.

This happened to me today, not sure if it's a symptom of a defective device or just a software bug
Picked mine up this morning. I've seen 3 random reboots with it in my hand today. It had also turned itself off once while in my bag and required a long press to boot back up. For now I'm chalking it up to 4.3 still being in its infancy.
Luckily it reboots really fast!

Yeah mine reboots here and there on it own. Also I don't like the way that if you're playing a game sometimes and have to listen or read a but of dialogue. The screen auto shutoff will still turn off.......

I had mine next to my bed last night and for some reason when I looked over at the Nexus 7, the screen was "on" but nothing was being displayed. It would not respond to anything. I held down the power button and went to bed.
Now it won't boot at all past the Nexus logo screen! I haven't tried rooting it or anything (I do have BusyBox and SuperSU installed from my previous Nexus 7, but without the bootloader being unlocked or root it shouldn't do anything, right?).
Been waiting for 20 minutes and it's stuck at the Nexus logo screen...
I have a similar issue where upon waking the device in the morning it will reboot. The odd thing it usually doesn't do it right away, but up to a minute afterwards.
Very odd.
No random rebots <knock on wood> but I do find it difficult to find and press the power button without sometimes turning the device to see what I am doing.
So Im unlocked and flashed the Super Nexus ROM about 3 days ago. Its the first ROM to be ever flashed into my phone. Today I was on my way to school and the phone out of no were just turned off by itself? It wouldnt turn on until I connected it to the charger. Has anyone else had this happens to them?

I've had similar issues. I also had an instance where the phone was on but unresponsive. I had Ana alarm going off and it wouldn't turn off, screen was off and buttons not illuminated. Next time try holding power + vol up. Usually after about 15 secs or so it'll reboot.

Is my phone showing its age and starting to break down on me?
I have an issue where my phone randomly reboots itself. Even just unlocking it reboots it. It also gets stuck in a loop where it'll shut off and try to turn itself on but screen remains black. I can only feel the initial boot vibration and it'll remain that way until I try to turn it on. Sometimes I spend about 30 mins just trying to boot the phone.
Is my phone already dying down or is it a Rom/App/Etc issue?

try reflashing it, sounds like its crashing to me.
Weird, I thought it was something else since it happens randomly. Been running my current rom for quite some time. But I guess it doesn't hurt to try and reflash.

Don't forget that this device has one fault and that's the power button sticking look it up it sounds like its ur problem if not a bad ROM/flash
It may be the button since my sister has the same phone/rom and also happens to have the same issue at times as well just less frequent compared to mines.
