I can install any GB ROM and it works fine. I'm running Amon RA recovery. Whenever I flash any ROM that is ICS or above it won't boot. It just boot loops after the initial white "HTC EVO 4G" screen. I've let it sit for over 1/2 hour at times to see if it would finish booting and it just boot loops.
I've done all the proper wiping before and tried multiple combinations of wiping before and wiping caches after flashing. Here's my typical wipe process
4x wipe userdata
4x wipe cache
4x wipe system
4x wipe dalvik cache
flash cm10
4x wipe cache
4x wipe dalvik cache
install gapps
4x wipe cache
4x wipe dalvik cahce
reboot
I know thats a little excessive for wiping but I've had the most success with this process on many android devices. However, I've even tried wiping more and wiping less before and after flashing with no success on this phone. Here is my hboot info:

you should try this recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661543
did you make sure and partition your sdcard to either ext3 or ext4?? i believe that it is required...
Your sdcard needs to have an sd-ext partition formatted with either an ext3 or ext4 file system in order to install an Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean ROM. You can read an explanation of sdcard partitioning at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158993. Before you partition your sdcard, do not forget to copy the entire contents of the sdcard to an empty folder on your computer first since partitioning will destroy all data on the sdcard! I recommend either a 512 MB extended partition (sd-ext) for 8GB sdcard or 1024 MB extended partition for 32 GB sdcard and formatting the sd-ext partition with the ext3 file system as this configuration will work with Gingerbread as well as ICS and JellyBean ROMs. Once you have partitioned and formatted the sdcard, copy the original contents of the sdcard from your computer to the newly formatted sdcard.

Have you created an extended partition? Your sdcard should have two partitions for either Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean ROMs -- a primary partition formatted as FAT32 for file storage and an extended partition (sd-ext) formatted as EXT3 (or EXT4) to allow the operating system to utilize as additional internal memory. Although some Gingerbread ROMs are able to utliize an extended partition formatted as EXT3, Gingerbread ROMs do not require an sd-ext partition to function since they use less of the EVO's internal memory.
Also be sure that you wipe the sd-ext partition before flashing a new ROM.
After you flash the ROM don't wipe anything see if that works

I had trouble too until i figured out that the problem was my sd card. I didn't know squat about ext 2, 3, or 4 but I did my homework and downloaded a free program called Mini tool partition wizard. I just made 6GB the primary FAT32 amd 10GB primary ext4. Then the ICS and Jellybean loaded with no problems. I'm new at this but if I can help in any way let me know. Here is the link for the software. You shouldn't have any problems. You can also look on YouTube for videos for just about any of these problems.

on amon RA recovery you can partition the sdcard and upgrade it to ext3 then to ext 4 without need of external programs
I have Smelkus. It's awesome. Lots of extra tools to use in an emergency. I got it from goo. It's based on the RA with some custom graphics and a few very useful tools. However, I prefer to wipe my SD card with Mini Partition Wizard. I can do that while I'm organizing my downloads. I just learned a new trick though. Sometimes hidden script can be a beast to remove. I downloaded Gparted and burned it to a disk. The drawback is that it has to be ran from the bios on your computer. It's not real convenient. The awesome part is that it rips the script right off, unlike anything else I've tried. I had a third partition with some hidden script that was "stealing" my data connection and WiFi. It took me a minute to figure it out by testing the same ROM downloads on different SD cards. Anyways...Gparted is a valuable tool for SD card issues. It wiped everything; hidden script and hidden partitions. Good stuff. Google Gparted to find the download.

What version of AlphaRev are you running. Some of them have a partition size too small for some of the larger roms so when you try to install them only have gets installed and the phone won't boot.
Either use a partition table with a larger system partition or a smaller rom or open the rom and delete some of the apps you don't want.

They did not flash a different hboot, only the s-off procedure. And this does not change the partition sizes.
I went to alpharev.nl and did the standard burn to disc and boot from CD procedure, so 1.8 I think?
Would going to Clockwork Mod and creating a 1GB partition w/ 0 swap memory resolve this?

From reading the first post of the ROM you're trying to install your SDcard should be all FAT32 with no EXT partition.
I formatted the microsd card to FAT32 using Windows, didn't create any partitions (seeing as the rom author said it's not needed) flashed the ROM via CWM but it still hangs at the screen. Even after removing some system apps manually, I cut the size down by 10meg near enough.
I simply don't understand what could be wrong here...

Was in the same situation, will pass very fast.
I had the same problem.
This is what I did:
1) Boot in ubuntu (u can burn a CD, boot from the CD and try it out - not necessary to install) or you can burn GParted Live CD
2) partition your SD card whit GParted
3) mount your partitions
4) boot in windows and format again your SD card
5) copy the ROM that you want to install on the SD card
6) boot your device in recovery, install the ROM, reboot and your done
Hope this help you out.

Couple of things to add to the folks above:
1) It won't work on ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0 since it's an Amend script (update-script). Amon_RA 2.3 and below, and ClockworkMod 2.x both support amend and edify (updater-script and update-binary), so it will work for them.
2) Isn't needed on ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0 or Amon_RA Recovery 2.3 since each have the options to wipe all your partitions (albeit you have to wipe each partition separately. I personally nagged Amon_RA to put in the wipe /boot and wipe /system options).
3) It wipes everything on the phone's internal storage except the WiMAX partition (which would be incredibly stupid since it would wipe out everyone's WiMAX radio and keys!). What it really does is format /system (your ROM and system apps), /cache (the kernel and ROM's cache), /data (your apps, settings, app data, etc.), and dalvik-cache (which is usually on /data or /cache, and is the cache for the Dalvik VM; the thing that runs apps).
4) Your SD card, .android_secure (on the SD card, this is where apps that have been moved to the card via the Applications settings in Froyo or Gingerbread), and sd-ext (old style of moving apps and cache to the SD card WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE USED ANYMORE) partitions are left alone. THEY WILL NOT BE WIPED. So if you have any apps on your SD card (for example, all the Angry Birds games install to SD by default), you will have to wipe them manually.
thank you guys!
If you open up the zip and look at the update-script file, the following commands are listed in it
Code:
show_progress 0.1 0
format BOOT:
format CACHE:
format DATA:
format SYSTEM:
show_progress 0.1 10
To anyone with half a functioning brain cell, it should be obvious what each line does.
Post #5 says it well. The only thing I'd add is there really is little reason to do both wipe and this (esp with ra recovery 2.3). If you do the factory wipe option (first on the wipe menu), that will clear both the cache and data partitions. And since the data partition is already formatted, doing an addition wipe dalvik cache is really not necessary.
To the OP: Please use a more descriptive subject in the future. Almost passed this thread over because of it.
Hi
Playing around with my rooted htc deisire i tried to flash the new RcMic HBOOT
After doing god knows what
i cant start my phone and keep having this message

please help
Give us more information what you did before.
Did you full wipe/factory reset & wipe cache? What partitions do you have on SD Card, are you S-OFF?
yes
i am s-off
i did wipe cache/wipe factory reset
i tried to restore to my lee droid 2.4 but my phone keeps looping from the start
What partitions do you have on SD Card, which HBOOT you are using, which version of the ROM you flashed?
i flashed this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988570
i have no partition
hboot 6-93.1002
Did you read first post?
It clearly says you need 1GB+ EXT2/3/4 partition on SD card. Thats why you getting errors and end up with bootloop.
Also if you have Stock HBOOT be sure to flash A2SD+ version, and CM7 version if you flashed CM7 HBOOT partition table.
Before flashing again be sure to perform Full Wipe/Factory reset and Cache wipe!

I cannot find rcmixs hboot. Only recommend one for this rom, which is cm7. You flashed this one? If, you cannot restore leedroid rom, because the /system partition of cm7 hboot is to small. If not, wright partition sizes of your hboot here.

sorry guys cant really follow
what you are suggesting?
right now i cant flash anything
Reformat your SD Card, make FAT32 partition + 1GB EXT4 partition. (backup data if you have important files on SD)
Full wipe/Factory reset + Cache wipe.
Download RCMixS_v2.0_A2SD+_BravoHboot.zip if you have Stock HBOOT or RCMixS_v2.0_A2SD_CM7Hboot.zip if you flashed CM7 HBOOT earlier and put it on SD Card.
Flash it, and wait... it takes a bit longer on first boot!
Enjoy.
if i dont want to flash rcmix and want to go back to my old lee droid rom, i have to do all these things you describe?
Yes you need, but just flash LeeDroid ROM instead of RcMix.
You need to do the rest tho because LeeDroid require 512MB+ EXT2/3/4 partition too for A2SD.
Btw. you need to repartition your SD card only once, then you just wipe and flash other ROM if you want, but EXT partition is mandatory!

GParted. With windows you cannot create an ext partition, because ext is a linux file system. But i would always use gparted or recovery of phone to partition sd card and never windows.
If U dont wanna use Gparted, then
use "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition" in windows. (freeware-use google)
Can make all partitions, with no problems!

Will this work for partitioning htc desire in windows. Tried Gparted but for some reason it wasn't working for me on boot.
Hello
I've gone through Revolutionary to free my Desire from the shackles of Orange/T Mobile and HTC's software.
Everything worked fine at first. I got the Revolutionary recovery running, then flashed Cyanogenmod 7.
Cyanogenmod 7 was great, but it kept crashign when I tried opening the Cyanogenmod Settings.
I opened recovery, wiped everything clean and tried to re-flash it again.
It reflashed, but said it did not see an SD-Ext, but went through to the boot screen....
but the boot screen just kept looping over and over.....so I repeated the options listed above and flashed the MIUI Rom and again the boot screen keeps looping.
I went back into Revolutionary Recovery and now the options keep bringing me back to a black screen showing the word Revolutionary..... but wont let me flash again.
I'm stumped and could really use some advice on what to do next.
Any help would be massively appreciated.

I went back into Revolutionary recovery and restored the backup (nandroid) and rebooted - this time it went back to Cyanogenmod 7's boot screen and the animation seems to be stuck on a loop.

Someone please help!!

Did u flashed even the a2sd script? Did u have an ext partition?
Try a clean installation..Wipe data, cache, dalvik and under mounts and storage format also system and sd-ext(if u have the ext)...Then flash cm7, gapps and a2sd script (if u have the ext, following the instruction on cm7 thread)
I downloaded the Cyanogenmod 7 zip from the main site. As I just did as you suggested the following showed:
- wiping data -
formatting / data ...
formatting / cache ...
formatting / sd-ext ...
No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext.

- wiping cache -

Formatting /sd-ext...
No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of sd/ext.
Done.
Dalvik Cache wiped.
Where do I find the sd-ext or create an app2sd partition?
Thank you very much for your assistance.
VB
As far as I know, one cannot partition its sd card with ckockworkmod recovery. You have to do it with gparted.
After creating the ext partition, don't forget to flash the a2sd patch from cyanogenmod thread here on xda.
SwiftKeyed from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
The sd-ext partition is not striclty required..the rom work also with no ext..
Flash the cm zip again and the gapps, and it should boot..
later, if u need more space, u can create an sd-ext partition for app2sd...search some guide about it..even if u can simply partition ur sd card with the recovery (cwm 3.x only i think or amon ra), but u need to do a backup on ur pc of ur sdcard content, as the partitioning from the recovery will format ur sd card completely..after partioned and restored the content on ur sd card, u can flash the a2sd script on the cm 7 niglhtly thread and u are ok
Yep, it's more recommend to flash cm7 hboot instead of creating an ext partition.
SwiftKeyed from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
I think he has used Revolutionary. It is possible to partition the SD card with Clockworkmod recovery. Even I did the same. May be you need to change the stock hboot to CM7r2 hboot partition table
check http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=SD_card_partitioning
it will explain how to make an ext partition
Thank you all for replying. I've got everything running sweet with cyanogenmod 7 and ext partition due to your help.
Big up the xda community!!!
Hi All,
I've been on here trying to sort this out for hours (I should really be asleep now!) and I've looked through hundreds of posts, webpages etc. and I can't find my answer and I'm losing the will to live!
I've only just started rooting my Desire, because if I'm honest I had no real reason to swap from the stock and Android scares me! When I had my TouchPro, I had a different rom on that every day!
Anyway, I had the MIUI rom, and I didn't like it, so I was trying to look for something better and stumbled on a few (had Oxygen, Villian and RCMix), but the one I liked was InsertCoin. So I did the everything the tutorials and posts said but I can't get passed the the S-OFF screen.

I have formatted my SD to (16GB) so 1.16GB is EXT2 and the rest is FAT32. There's nothing else on there other than the .zip
I read somewhere else that CWM needed to be a newer version, so I just put on 3.0.0.5 and then tried to install again, but that didn't help. I've wiped the data, dalvik cache and cache partition so many times!
When it installs, it doesn't seem to take very long, but it comes up with the "fingers crossed" at the end which seems to suggest it worked, but nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can't think of anything else, nor can I find any other information on what else I could try.
Thank you in advance

2)how did you partition the memory card??
the right way is first fat32 partition and after that remaining for ext3 or 4..try formatting in ext3 or 4

I've started the phone again, just to leave it for 15-20 minutes to see if it'll work now. It's been 7 minutes and still on the WSS screen.
I wouldn't trust Windows partition tools that claim to format EXT partitions (such as minitool partition wizard). Either format the SD card from recovery or use GParted from a Linux boot disk. Also, you did partition both sectors as 'primary' partitions I hope? Sorry, just trying to think of ideas and the EXT partition is the most likely culprit I can think of provided you did a full wipe beforehand.
Convert your ext2 in ext3 or ext4. Might help.
SwiftKeyed from dGB using Transparent XDA App
Thanks for the reply

I wouldn't trust Windows partition tools that claim to format EXT partitions (such as minitool partition wizard). Either format the SD card from recovery or use GParted from a Linux boot disk. Also, you did partition both sectors as 'primary' partitions I hope?

I did read somewhere (on here I think) that partitioning from recovery on CWM (can't remember the version) bricks phones.

When you say "full wipe" - do you mean going through all the options in recovery? Like 'Wipe data/factory reset', 'wipe cache partition' and 'wipe dalvik cache' - because I did all that and still no luck.
When you say it's fine to partition in recovery, then I'll try that. I'm not smart enough to use Gparted!

Yes,your wiping procedure is correct..Afaik these sense 2.1 roms run better on EXT3 or 4o.. Easues does not support ext4..Even I use to partition using that..USe Gparted.....I guess it should work..verify checksum of the downloaded zip file..Incase it might be a corrupt download
I did the partitioning through GPart thanks to this tutorial http://android.modaco.com/topic/293461-how-to-partition-sdcard/
When I copy the .zip file across from my computer, I normally do it through a card reader, but this time I've mounted USB storage through recovery to see if that makes any difference. Just dragging it across is ok?
It's installing yet again, so fingers crossed (again!)
IT'S WORKING! I'm up to the Insert Coin screen anyway, so it's better than seeing the Joker's face over and over and over and over!
I guess it'll be 15-20 minutes from now?
Thanks for all your help - super happy
It's working! It took only about 5 minutes to start from the Insert Coin load screen.
But I haven't got the 'cube' style scrolling like this video shows http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FeZJ0ktSrw
How do I get that please?
Then, that'll be my last question, promise!

you can ask as many questions as you want dude!! afterall knowledge spreads through sharing...there may be four possibilities
1)That ROM in a video is a 3D ROM you need to install ROMs like [Cool3D Sense 3.0][19 Sep]Cool3D AceS v3 |Android 2.3.5|FAST|STABLE|STOCK|CM7/r2 or AceMod007 3D ROM
2)your animations may be off,if yes..go to Settings---Display---Animations---All animations..
3)Developer may have removed the 3D feature from the ROM
4)It may be another ROM by same developer
According to me the ROM you downloaded does not have 3D home-screen
IMHO don't go for ROM with 3D home-screen cause it has proved a little laggy for me..although ROMS with sense 2.1+3.0 work great..I am using AceMod007 v37 (sense 2.1+3.0)it has worked like a charm for me so far..InsertCoin is also nice ROm..Tried both...
Hope you enjoy the ROMS
Hey,
Thanks for the reply.
As I did a bit of searching - I think they were using Launch Pro, which I installed and then quickly removed!
I'm finally happy
