Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've made this thread to help people who have some problem and make new threads instead of searching the common questions. In my next post I will start posting the FAQ's and since it's not possible for me to be online 24/7 so it may take sometime but i will keep updating it. And if anyone have some doubts feel free to ask. BTW Ifeel free to PM me if you have some ideas or nice questions to improve this thread

Q1: I get bootloop after installing a custom rom. What is the problem?
A: Have you done everything correctly?
-Firstly post your problem in the ROM thread as the devs there may help you better.
-Check your mobile compatibility with the ROM
-Check if you have installed the correct kernel for your ROM.
-Check whether you have done the correct wipes as mentioned in the ROM thread.
-Some ROMs require formatting system. So if it is mentioned in main ROM thread then you must do it.
-Some releases may require stock rom first before flashing the custom rom. So flash the stock rom and then the custom rom over it.
If nothing works just download the stock ROM for your mobile and flash it using flashtool. This may solve your problem.
Q2: Can you suggest me the best ROM or kernel or something like that for my smartphone cause i'm really lazy to do a bit of searching...?
A: First go here and beware before asking these type of questions again otherwise you will end up with a bunch of people like me mocking you and nothing else.
Q3: I have rooted my phone successfully, now how can I install CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recovery?
A: If you have locked bootloader you can simply install CWM using an app called x-parts from Google Play and install recovery from it. And if your bootloader is unlocked you can simply flash a custom kernel with CWM or some other recovery present in it.
Q4: I have a problem with this ROM and what should I....
A: It's a ROM specific question, better post it in the ROM thread. They will help you better.
Q5: My phone can't boot in fastboot mode. Please help me!
A: Firstly check that fastboot is enabled on your mobile and the correct procedure to go to fastboot mode is by holding back button and connecting to computer via USB.
Q6: WIFI is not working. What should I do?
A: See if it is listed as a bug in the specific ROM thread. If not try custom kernels and if you can get correct WIFI modules flash them. If you're lucky WIFI will work.
Q7: How do I install custom rom/kernel on my mobile?
A: Mihahn has worked really hard on making his guide not because he wants some people asking again and again the same questions instead of using a bit of the "SEARCH" feature.
Q8: What is the safest way to root my phone or unlock its bootloader?
A: There no such thing as safest way. If you do everything correctly you will be successful in rooting you phone and unlocking the bootloader and also [URL="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568792"]Follow this [/URL].
Q9: How to activate MSC(mass storage mode) on CM10?
A: Though this question is of a particular rom but still I've listed it here since many people asked this question. Just go here, thanks the person and perform the steps correctly.
Q10: I did an OTA(Over the Air) update after unlocking bootloader. Now my phone is dead, what should I do?
A: Just go to this thread, thanks the person. Refer to section 6 and download the unbricking package from no.16 of XX.Downloads section, perform the correct steps and most probably your phone will be back to life!
Q11: How do I unlock my bootloader if it says Bootloader Unlock Allowed:No?
A: No one has actually got a 100% working solution since it is because of your simlock, thus you may have to pay for it. You can try WotanServer or Omnius and if you're lucky it will be unlocked and fastboot might be enabled.
Q12: How do I OC(OverClock) or UC(UnderClock) my phone?
A: If your kernel supports the function and if your ROM has inbuilt option for the fuction then you can do it directly from ROM or else you can buy/download apps like SetCPU for your phone and can use it easily to OC, UC or change governer of your CPU. *Playing with your CPU is at your own risk and if you go anywhere wrong your phone might not be able to recover(permanent brick). So if you are a newbie(noob) just stay away from these things*
Q13: How much OverClocking is advised for my phone?
A: Though there are some kernels which provide Over Clocking from 1.6-2 GHz(GigaHertz), but still you should not overclock above 1.2-1.4 GHz for daily use or else your CPU might burn, turning your phone into permanent brick. *I personally do not advise overclocking at all so do everything at your own risk.
Q14: How do I partition my sd-card?
A: Follow this very nice guide given by sayhellotwoheaven. Don't forget to THANK him.
Q15: How does Thanks Meter affect my profile?
A: Thanks Meter actually is not useful in becoming Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer. It is actually the appreciation you get on you works. Thanks Meter has been made so that members of XDA stop posting just THANKS on threads and thread could be clean and helpful.
Q16: How to be a Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer?
A: Recognized Contributor is a role intended for members who produce some of the best original and helpful guides for users, as well as helping other users who have problems, in a friendly manner. Recognized Contributors will get a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Contributors, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Themers are those users who work (often tirelessly) on designing new theme graphics and user interface overhauls for ROMs. Users who aspire to be Recognized Themers should be creating original graphics work for their themes being released, demonstrate a commitment to crediting other users’ work when applicable, and seek the relevant permission in advance from the original creator. Recognized Themers will receive a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Themers, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Developer, as the name suggest are those who develop really good ROMs, kernels, etc. Anyone who is skillful and publishes his own creation other that just copying and pasting can be termed as recognized developer.
For more details and how to apply for these posts. See this.
Q17: How to add framework mods like skipping track via volume button, small apps, CRT-off animation, etc.?
A: See this very beautiful guide
Q18: How to Decompile/Recompile ICS apk files?
A: Here is a great guide by stalin salu. Just follow that and you can very easily do it. Just don't forget to give him THANKS.
Q19: What are Governors and I/O Schedulers, etc.?
A: See this very good guide by zhanjia and anyone can know everything about them.
Q20: My ROM doesn't have x-loud and BE(Bravia Engine). How do I install them?
A: Simply download a very nice app know as Pimp My Rom from Google Play and install it and you can get many tweaks and options in that. It also has an option to download BE and x-loud for your ROM if it's compatible.
Q21: Does ChainFire support my phone?
A: The simple answer is download and use it. But if you are on ICS/JB I would recommend you not to use it as it may most probably result in bootloop. ChainFire is compatible only upto GB.
Q22: Why does my phone say Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No?
A: It's most probably a simlock. The mobile you bought has a simlock of the particular company whose SIM is being used. Normally the companies used to provide the unlocking code after sometime but now I think it won't be provided from now since simlock unlocking has become illegal. But you can break your simlock through WotanServer, Omnius or some local shops.
Q23: Can you tell me how does thanks meter increases with regard to number of thanks?
A:No. of Thanks and meter:

Q24: What are BB Codes and what BB Codes can I use in my thread?
A: Mainly every kind of text formatting that we do in XDA thread is governed by BB codes. Here is the list of all the BB Codes we can use in XDA and explanation of each code.
Q25: Is there anyway to mount my sd-card using CWM recovery?
A: Yes! Many versions of CWM support mounting sd-card through it. For that go to Mounts and Storage->Mount sd-card and you're done! But remember if you press back button then your sd-card will unmount instantly.

if u guys have Q/A let me know here ill add in the list

CM11 - KitKat
Hi!
I'm currently using the latest nightly version from CM10 on my Xperia Arc, and I was thinking about trying this new build of CM 11.
Can I install it using the CM updater? If not, every time I install a new update I'll lose all the data from my device?
Thanks.

Bluetooth connectivity and xperia home problem
Hello
I'm currently using arc s and have recently installed z1 honami custom rom
Whenever I reboot my mobile first thing that flashes on the screen after the entire reboot is unfortunately,Xperia home has stopped
and a new thing that I noticed is when i turn the bluetooth on it gets paired with the device but when they try to send a file to my phone it says connection failed
I have tried with other devices to checkout if it's my problem or the other device's!!
The same thing happens even with all other devices.
I've tried all the possible ways but can't find a solution
Bluetooth worked fine with other custom rom such as ultimate hd 5.0

its always better to start fresh if you move from one version to another, other wise some leftover data might conflict with the new version and you'll get lag and other issues with your device. but if they mention in their forum that you can just flash the new Cm11 on cm10 then it should not be a problem but i will got for the first one.

i had the same problem but my mobile was charging fine,
find any way to charge your battery, insert in another arc or some thing,
computer does not recognize it what did you do before that with your mobile ? ( Ex installed a new rom or something ) you messed up big time
if you do get to charge your mobile you can use another computer to flash official firmware again thats what i did used my another laptop and it worked over there for some reason.
Or
you can place an rom on your sd card and flash it via cwm but in any case you need that battery charge first.

I have a question, I have installed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545354 and can i flash back official firmware (tft file) ?

HELP AND SUPPORT

DESCRIPTION OF THIS THREAD
Back in 2011 I sat down and wondered what I could do to help a community that helped me so much and continues to help people everyday from bricked phones to shiny new things on their respective devices and this is what I created, with the guidance of certain moderators of course.
[*]I wanted to create a thread in which any question can be asked, be it porting related or anything and we all help each other out, this has been going for a few years now and has been a huge success so I have updated the quick start guide and I will be a more ever-present force in the thread to answer any help and such that you may need, because if we all help each other this place can be a more user-friendly and more interactive place to visit.
Please also note you may PM me if you wish to ask anything in private, or if you feel the need to just say hello.
Please also note that this thread was indeed a sticky at one time however I had other commitments in 2011 (College and such) and it was removed by November 2011.
[*]For donations, I would kindly ask you to donate to the Macmillan cancer care and support, however if you wish to donate to me I will donate it to the charity anyway, myself and Macmillan thank you for your support, no one should have to face cancer alone.
HERE IS A GUIDE TO GET STARTED
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE v1.0
Rooting - Gives you complete root system access allowing things to be done that usually would be denied.
[*]S-OFF - (HTC Devices) Basically means you can flash ROM's to the SYSTEM partitions and such.
[*]Write Protection - This can mean a variety of things, from a locked boot-loader to SD card access, consult your device forum for information.
[*]Bricked(Soft) - Soft brick means that it can be recovered using appropriate methods found in your device forum.
[*]Bricked(Hard) - Very hard to fix usually means it's beyond repair but can be fixed in certain circumstances and at a local repair dealer for your phone.
[*]Kernels - The backbone of the phone, they are responsible for making everything run, the CPU, Schedulers and such are configurable using the kernel.
[*]CPU0 - Different for each phone however CPU0 is usually the 1st logical processor followed by 1,2,3 for quad core phones.
[*]Dual Core/Quad Core - Dual core means you get CPU0 and CPU1, Quad core means CPU0, CPU1, CPU2 and CPU3 are all available.
[*]Chip-set - This is your main-board, it means what your phone is built upon.
[*]Lib files - Found in /system/lib usually however this can be different, they control the software to firmware gaps on your phone, so they enable sound, camera, video; the major things live here, don't touch it unless you know what you're doing.
[*]Battery Stats - These control how long your battery lasts, they are reset when you delete the file from the system however it's strongly recommended you don't delete them.
[*]AOSP - Basically means the original Google Android software as a bare-bone OS.
[*]Partitions - These are different for each phone and should be treated with great care for example flashing a puppy to the radio partition would be a foolish action.
[*]Launchers - They change the UI of the phone, there are many out there so try them all until you find one that suits you just right.
[*]Logcat - This is only useful if you have an error with your phone, it's a simple adb logcat command however I prefer to use QTADB which is a nice GUI style logct application.
[*]ROM's - You flash these on phones that are able to flash Custom software, you can get many varieties however the main ones are 'Stock' the original phone OS, 'CM' which is AOSP, 'MIUI' An AOSP/AOKP style crossover mimics the iOS UI.
[*]Recovery - When flashed; custom recovery allows you to make changes to the different partitions inside the phone for example flashing a custom ROM.
[*]Flashing - Basically writing information to a partition or making a fool of yourself in public (the latter is not recommended due to laws)
[*]Over-clocking - This means pushing your hardware beyond its manufacturers original settings, this can be useful to create a faster phone but treat it with care as you can damage phone hardware.
[*]Under-clocking - This means lowering the stress on the system by making the hardware run slower than it's intended to do, great for saving battery.
[*]Under-volting - This means under-volting your CPU or GPU, this can cause stability issues but on the plus side can save battery, it's all about striking a balance.
[*]Benchmarking - This means to test your phone to its max and find out how it stacks up against other devices.
[*]IO Schedulers- They control how the system reacts in different situations, there are different types of Schedulers available so use each until you find one suitable for you (protip: Use fiops or noop)
[*]CPU Governors - They control the CPU frequencies and such for example "Performance governor" will give you constant speed, whereas "Conservative governor" will give you low speed.
[*]GPU Governors - They do the same as their CPU counterparts except they control the graphical section of the hardware.
[*]Radios - They control the baseband aspects of a phone (your network and such) they have different names for each device, they are very dangerous to mess around with.

This should work
i know you said you had tried it but try again, DO everything as it says, even if it's as simple as case sensitive names..
Do you know any methods of rooting 2.3.4? The device I'm looking to root is a Kyocera Echo running GB 2.3.4. Gingerbreak, SuperOneClick, and z4root (lol), have all failed in rooting the device.
As far as I know, there's no locked bootloaders or anything that should be in the way except for no recovery. The Echo has fastboot if there's actually a method of rooting through there.
Thanks.
just tried it not working after some time it says device connected do u think coredroid is worth all the trouble?

How can I sign a ROM or a bootloader for Samsung Recovery 3E?
Where was this thread 4 months ago when I was not getting any sleep. Thanks.
I'd like to try and become a developer, mainly because my Samsung Droid Charge hasn't received any AOSP love yet and I want to try and help the dev(s) that are working on it, also I would like to make my own rom. But I have no idea where to start, and I have questions like do I need Linux, do I need to/where do I learn terminal commands, how does smali/baksmali work, how to compile/decompile, how does github work, what is a toolchain, do I need to know how to code, do I need to know any languages, what is Eclipse...stuff like that. I'm a complete noob at this kind of stuff and I feel it's a bit far out of my reach but I'm willing to give it a shot if I can get a decent start. I realize it won't just happen overnight, I have the patience to keep learning and doing research to figure it out, but I would like help getting started.
@samuel2706: I have a Droid x2 and as you it has a locked bootloader. I also have a Galaxy Tab 7" which does NOT have a locked bootloader. I've been in Android for a very very long time, I am an experience flasher and rooter, but I want to get into the development side.
Could you direct me to what I need to read up on and learn about and do for me to become a developer? I would like to develop from my devices, I know that a locked bootloader steeply limits what I can do, that's why I am more interested in developing for my tablet. I mean a lot of things interest me. I look at my logcat on my devices, I see errors, and I just want to go in and fix them, I want to make my device smooth as butter, lol.
I'm also interested in finding an exploit of some sort for my Droid x2 so that I can crack it. There has gotta be a way to crack it open.
Thanks!!!
Stock rooted Gingerbread for HTC Inspire
Hey Samuel. Thanks for doing this. I got my Inspire about a weeks ago, rooted it the day I got it, and have been lurking these forums since. Saw this opportunity to ask a n00b question, and registered. So, I'm looking for a stock, rooted Gingerbread ROM. It was suggested I don't return my phone to stock, update, and then re-root. Not sure why, but I'll listen. Thanks in advance, and thanks for doing this.

[FAQ] Xperia Play Frequently Asked Questions [WIP] [Updated 21st Feb]

[SIZE=+3]Frequently Asked Questions[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+2]Sony Ericsson Xperia Play[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please feel free to PM me with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]Q1: Why isn't Flashtool working?[/SIZE]Make sure you have installed the drivers that are included in Flashtool. Make sure you are flashing the correct FTF for your device and make sure your phone is in the correct mode, fastboot or flashmode. You can refer to this guide for more help "How To Flash A FTF Using Flashtool" or "Little Flashtool tutorial".
[SIZE=+1]Q2: How do I root my device?[/SIZE]This depends on what firmware you phone is currently on. If the phone is below "xxx.xxx.62" then you can use the ZergRush exploit via superoneclick or flashtool. If the device is on "xxx.xxx.62" or above then you will need to downgrade or unlock your Boot Loader and use a auto-root kernel. Here are 2 useful tutorials "Root Firmwares Below '.62'" and "Root Any Firmware (Unlocked Bootloader)".
[SIZE=+1]Q3: How do I unlock my Boot Loader?[/SIZE]This also depends on your device, If it is a unbranded (has no carrier applications or branding) device then you can unlock it using sony's website. Unlock Bootloader Sony. Here is a useful guide that will help your determine if your device is unlock-able via the previously mentioned method "Unlock Xperia Play Bootloader (Un-Branded Devices)". If your device is branded or not unlockable via official methods then you can pay to have your boot loader unlocked by XDA Senior Member "Alejandrissimo" via PM or at his site "Paid Xperia Play Boot Loader Unlock".
[SIZE=+1]Q5: Why should I unlock my Boot Loader?[/SIZE]The main reason you would want to unlock your Boot Loader is to be able to install custom ROM's such as CyanogenMod, AOKP, Slimbean and even more. You can also flash custom kernels with a unlocked boot loader allowing you to get additional features, "Turbo Kernel" is a brilliant kernel as it allows you to multiboot 4 ROM's and they can even be GingerBread, ICS and JellyBean.
[SIZE=+1]Q6: What is ADB?[/SIZE]ADB is short for Android Debug Bridge it is useful for many things including getting logs, debugging and more. Here is a more detailed guide "ADB Guide"
[SIZE=+1]Q7: What is the best ROM or kernel?[/SIZE]This is probably NOT a good question to be asking. Asking this question will most likely get you made fun of, and since it is against the rules, your thread or post will most likely be deleted. The best ROM or kernel will depend on how you use your device and what you are hoping to get out of it. So, only you can answer this question, have a little bit of fun testing different ROMs and kernels and then pick the set up that works the best for you.
[SIZE=+1]Q8: How can I "Multi-Boot" my device?[/SIZE]The Xperia Play is now able to multiboot up to 4 ROM's and they don't even need to be the same android version, Jellybean, Ice Cream Sandwich and even Gingerbread is supported, For detailed information on how to multiboot your device visit this link "Multiboot Kernel (CosmicDan)" you can also get more information about multibooting here "Multiboot Guide and Help".
[SIZE=+1]Q9: How do i install a custom Kernel?[/SIZE]To install a custom kernel you will need to have already unlocked your Boot Loader. You can refer to the "Flashing a Custom Kernel" Section of "Flashing a Custom Kernel and ROM" for more information.
[SIZE=+1]Q10: What is a custom Recovery?[/SIZE]A custom recovery is required for installing most custom ROM's, Xperia 2011 devices do not have a recovery installed by default. You have the choice of 2 recoveries currently, TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and CWMR (Clock Work Mod Recovery). Most kernels include CWM by default but some do have TWRP aswell.
[SIZE=+1]Q11: How do i install a custom Recovery (CWM or TWRP)?[/SIZE]To install a recovery your can either flash a custom kernel with the recovery already installed (Refer to above question) or use this "x-Parts CWM Installer" although it is in the ARC section it will work find on the Xperia Play.
[SIZE=+1]Q12: How do i install a custom ROM?[/SIZE]The first thing you should know is that all Xperia 2011 devices including the Xperia Play are unable to flash the kernel via recovery and therefore the ROM And Kernel are installed separately. To install a ROM you will need a recovery installed on your device. You can refer to the "Installing a custom ROM" Section of "Flashing a Custom Kernel and ROM" for more information.
[SIZE=+1]Q13: How do return my device to Stock?[/SIZE]The first thing to do would be to follow the "Flashing a FTF File" Tutorial. If you unlocked your boot loader you will also need to flash the FTF from "Relock Bootloader". This will put you phone back to stock ROM and Re-lock your boot loader.
[SIZE=+1]Q14: What Rom/Kernel Should I use? (Question not to ask)[/SIZE]Please don't ask questions like this. This is down to you to decide. Try some ROM's and Kernels out and stick to the one you prefer. Don't forget you can install 4 ROM's at the same time using Turbo Kernel.
However You can find "everything you need to know about the Xperia Play here, It includes a list of most recent ROM's, Kernel's and more."
[SIZE=+1]Q15: Whats the Best ROM/Kernel for Battery Life/Gaming/Performance etc.? (Question not to ask)[/SIZE]Again these are not the sort of questions you want to be asking. Try some out and see what you like and how each performs for your needs.*

If you do not have or have forgot your password, you can only factory reset your phone to remove encryption.
[SIZE=+1]Q4: Will rooting affect my battery life?[/SIZE]
No simply rooting the phone should not hamper battery life.
[SIZE=+1]Q5: What is the best ROM?[/SIZE]
There is no best ROM for all users, depends on personal needs and preferences. best to pick a few which look like they meet your needs, and try them out..
[SIZE=+1]Q6: How do I return to stock?[/SIZE]
You can download the stock rom and return to stock using updated ODIN / http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2465764

At this time you can request a sim unlock from T-Mobile and use on networks with a sim that have same network towers.
[SIZE=+1]Q8: Can I flash a new recovery without rebooting my GNOTE 3?[/SIZE]
Yes. Place the recovery.img on your sdcard root. Open a terminal emulator and type "su flash_image recovery /sdcard/xxx.img". (Note: The x's are the name of the recovery as some may hold a different name. If not on the sdcard root folder, specify the folder /sdcard/xxx/xxx.img!)

[SIZE=+1]Q13: What is a "logcat" and how do I create one? [/SIZE]
For setting up ADB see What is ADB (above) logcat allows us to log what the OS is doing, and possibly offer information if things are not working. its quite simple to create but may be difficult for most to understand. This is a tool a Developer may ask for in detecting issues your device may be encountering.
To use logcat
Code:
adb shell
logcat
To logcat to a certain file do
Code:
adb shell
logcat -d > /sdcard/whatevertexfileyoulike.txt
For a full explanation follow the link in What is ADB

Some roms have "time" issues with getting a gps lock. This is a known issue with all custom Roms.
[SIZE=+1]Q16: How do I get the best out of my Rom?[/SIZE]
Depending on what Rom you choose. Once you go to the "THEME" sections there are many more mods for your selected rom. Always try different Roms to fit your liking.
[SIZE=+1]Q17: Titanium Backup ask if I would like to restore my original ID Code after I flash roms, what should I do.?[/SIZE]
Do to the mass amount of custom roms, some internel phone setting get changed by default. You should always restore ID codes and native handset information when possible.
[SIZE=+1]Q18: How loud is too loud?[/SIZE]
That realistically is up to you. Rule of thumb, if your sounds is distorted, even the least bit, then lower the settings. Distortion is a warning sign, and prolonged use can damage your hardware.
[SIZE=+1]Q19: I have about 4gb of data missing from internal storage I cannot find. Where is it?[/SIZE]
Recovery uses a large amount of data for backups. TWRP saves by default, backups to the /sdcard/twrp or /sdcard/0/twrp directory. Make sure you delete old or unused backups.
[SIZE=+1]Q20: I need to return my rooted phone for a replacement. Does returning to stock work?[/SIZE]
Yes. Follow the instructions on the forum for unrooting and flash the Odin stock file. If you flash an earlier version, make sure to accept updates to get your phone back to factory. Knox 0x1 will affect rather your warranty will be honored

Nice FAQ.
I knew the answer to every question but one, so hey, I learned something. Namely, I had no idea that the "flash_image" util was so prevalent. I assumed it was a touchwiz-only thing, but I just checked and it's also present on my CyanogenMod 10.2 ROM as well. Doing a "flash_image recovery /sdcard/twrp_foo.img" is certainly easier than having to remember the correct partition to manually 'dd' to (though still not as easy as just using GooManager).
One other Q for the FAQ:
Q: Is it too big?
A: No.
Does it perfectly work with AT&T's network? (including LTE)
Yes!

It's the annoying space-wasting notification that TouchWhiz shows when you have NFC enabled. Stock Android doesn't do that.

guys!
something we are all familiar with on galaxy grand forum is spamming!
indeed there are still many users/new users who post WRONG POSTS in WRONG SECTIONS..
still u can find questions which are off-topic/not related to forum/which have been answered several times/which have been asked several times by making new threads etc.
it not only takes up unnecessary space on server, but also lowers the value of GALAXY GRAND DUOS community..
developers getting pissed by day to day ETA's and helpers pissed by posting same and same answer, to several people !
i do know that xda's search option on top right might be not that accurate for some here,
SO
here i am here making an illustrative thread,(after discussing and opinions from many on xda)
WHICH will not only help you to solve ur problems regarding roms, but also day to day frequently asked multiple times answered questions....
its possible that it does not contain everything that u need , but seriously guys, it will at least decrease number of SPAMS on our threads...
all problems will be mostly illustrated below.........
just read it once please before posting in all other forums....
Few Information better read before any Posting!! (most Important..)1. AOSP based Rom/ Non touchwiz Rom (cm11/carbon,resurection remix, paranoid android,Pac-man ,Omni, and others)DO NOT support DUAL SIM Functionality..(it Requires Broadcomm Specific Codes which are not released as Open Source)...
you want Dual Sim , be On any touchWiz based Rom(Stock, Gennxt , etc)..
2. Difference between Touchwiz based Roms and AOSP Based Roms of our Device
1. AOSP Roms DON'T HAVE Dual sim functionality.
2. these are small in size as have only basic android Framework and Do not include bloatwares.
(Roms size~198mbs+)
3. AOSP Roms don’t have TW features, (but have their own**)!
4. they are Highly Customizable and meant for performance.
5. Lower RAM Consumption compared to TouchWiz.
1. Touchwiz Roms HAVE dual sim functionality
2. TouchWiz Roms are Larger in size
because of heavy Framework and Bloatwares*
(ROM Size~844mb+)
3. Touchwiz Got its own specific Features and its own apps for Music/camera etc.
4.they got polish and looks (in own way).
5. High RAM consumption Compared to AOSP. * Custom Roms based on Touchwiz are mostly Bloats free.
**Features varies from Rom to Rom.....get a quicky info in Roms Section!
Recovery Mode and Download Mode
recovery mode- it is a mode used for multipurpose uses.......described below..
switch off the device..hold (vol. up +powe+menu) combination...and let device start..once device start...remove hands atleast from power button else it will switch it on again!!!
How to operate it???
use volume buttons to navigate up and down...
use power button to select!
stock recivery(by default samsung recovery has limited options below....
-reboot system now
(Reboots the system).
-apply sdcard:update.zip
(Install diverse updates like themes, custom roms etc.)
-wipe data/factory reset
(Deletes all the apps, data and system settings(Files on the external SD-card will stay untouched)
-wipe cache partition
(Only wipes (formats) /cache partition (sometimes used as temp storage for updates, market downloads, etc) it hasn't anything common with Dalvik-cache which is in /data by default and it implies that the following boot after wiping cache partition will not be any longer than usually.)
beacuse stock recovery is limited.....custom recoveries are important which have got special features like backup/restore...and many more..
I use CWM...and it is easy to use..i will tell in later section
Download mode- it is used to flash firmware by Odin...
Combination - (vol. down+menu+power button)
once it boots ..there will be a screen ..
volume up to confirm that u want to go ahead and flash by Odin.
volume down to backoff and restart if u did it by mistake.... using ODIN
(lifeline of Samsung firmware installers )
it is really simple app fpr windows PC to flash firmwares/kernels/recoveries etc.
when you brick your device, dont panic and post anywhere...just re-install the firmware by Odin for developer's sake
it will remove everything and simply will install the Samsung's firmware and will make your device like a fresh new one!
an app for saving asses of guys like me who unwillingly/unknowingly brick there device!!
Odin download
link~ http://bartztech.com/wp-content/uploads/YP-G1/Restore/Odin3v1.7.zip
Odin Prerequisites:-
When you need to flash using Odin, you need the Samsung drivers, so that Odin can detect your device while attached to PC via. USB cable....
- Samsung USB Drivers
linky~ http://www.mediafire.com/download/hzlnda0l5t8qyes/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones(3).exe
download drivers
remove old ones installed by control panel(if any)
reboot
install the drivers given
reboot
ready to be used
A stock Samsung USB cable (it seems to give better result than other USB cable bought on third party sellers.)
Flashing by Odin
Note- An Odin flashable file is supposed to be in .tar or .tar.md5 format only.
1.Run Odin.
2. Put your device in download mode(switch off then press vol down+power+menu button altogether.....once it starts..leave buttons else will switch off again coz u are holding power button remember !!)
3.You should see a yellow/blue rectangle with COM:xx and saying ready. that is your device ID actually.. It means that your device is ready to be flashed! (It is important because it means that device connected is recognized by Odin )
4.Go into the PDA section and take your .tar file.(if single file is given.)
if multiple .tar files are given then put CSC in CSC...phone/modem in PHONE section respectively
5. if there is also a pit file then make sure that re-partition box at left is UNCHECKED>!!
6. meditate for a while and ensure once again hat files u have selected are for galaxy grand duos only !!
obvious if you flash s3 files by Odin..you will end up in boot loop..
7. hit start and pray to god that all goes well *kidding*..it will
8.When it's finished, it should say that it's done with a green box saying PASS..if it says fail.....i.e. your USB is not accurately detected...or is detected but disconnects in between.... it happens sometimes if it is not THAT GOOD usb cable...dont panic..remove battery and repeat all steps again!! .just dont let it touched even by air if that happens..keep trying and it will work...once work is done..the first thing u do is get a good USB cable (its i am talking about extreme cases , there will be no problem else )
once it is done , device will be rebooted ( if reboot is checked in left box(u will get what i am talking about once you open app and see by yourself)
Note:- if you have flashed a firmware..first boot might take time from 3-10 minutes...just keep patience and wait....
if still it doesnt start after 10 minutes ....remove battery...re-insert...go in recovery mode..clear data/format and clear cache..now reboot..wait again.... and you are good to go
 ROOTING and CWM
basic reason why most of people come on XDA is how to root!
thanks to @chotu222 who already have made a thread so that people can follow and acquire what they wished!!
i will be short and still descriptive!!!
(as it is already mentioned in forums and its pain to type so much :/)
PROCEDURE:
simply for quick pickers.. install CWM and then flash superUser through it!!
is it really that difficult to do??
there is a cwm given with SeLinux support(which is must for installing kitkat roms ), so why not just install that CWM and be carefree (whatever u flash, it wont give any problem)
simple two steps.....
Step 1: installing CWM...
here is SeLinux supported CWM file..(thanks to @pawitp \m/ )
linky~ http://goo.im/devs/pawitp/i9082_cm11.0/recovery_20131210.tar
download it and flash via odin
NOTE- while flashing by Odin , untick auto reboot Option(because rebooting device makes stock recovery to over-write over CWM recovery....)
once the flashing process is done....simply remove and re-insert battery, and go to Recovery Mode, flash the Fix-Recovery.zip given below...
that will fix your problem
Fix-Recovery link- http://www.mediafire.com/download/74mmd1x4af6hlo4/Fix-Recovery.zip.
Step 2: installing superSU: SuperSU allows for advanced management of Superuser access rights for all the apps on your device that need root.
linky~ http://download.chainfire.eu/376/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.89.zip
just flash the superSU by CWM.....
reboot the device...
and your device is now rooted(check it if there is a superSU app in ur app drawer or not).
that is it!!
that's all it takes to root your device...
just 5 minutes :/
NO..You wont loose any data..its just that you simply installed an app in system root directory

Custom roms
Custom Roms are customized Roms for devices..providing us with various different options/advantages over stock Rom what we have Pre-installed by company!..it could be a de-bloated same stock rom w or w/o extra features,/ a whole new version of android/ a ROM based with UI built for different mobile...
simply..there are many Roms and the list is actually long..i cant simply explain but still tried to....
They are mostly based on Aosp/Aokp format(in simple words, with look of nexus UI), or OEM's based(in simple words like Samsung's touch wiz, htc's sense)..
every rom has its unique specialty..unique UI and Unique features.
OEM's are heavily programmed and sized, bloated with factory apps pre-included..
that is the reason that nexus based Roms (~250Mbs+) are twice smaller than the official firmwares(~800Mbs+)!
thanks to all respected Developers who did put such their efforts, and have provided us with so many ROMs !
i am enlisting all ROMs down here with short descriptions, so that you can find everything under one thread here!
AOSP BASED ROMs-
Kitkat (android 4.4.2)
CyanogenMod 11-
thanks to @pawitp for developing this Rom. i dont think i need any explaination for CyanogenMod
its basic AOSP Rom based on Kitkat(4.4.2)...used as base rom for many Custom Roms, It is considered as standard Rom by many Users...Good battery backup, performance and less RAM consumption is speciality of this Rom..it don't implement much extra features except basics, as try to be as near to Nexus stock rom!
developer is always trying to update it as soon as CyanogenMod releases any update...
pawitp has also given delta update Option if you are using limited mbs and internet..its like update and patches which are directly supposed to be flashed (and are <20mbs)..just the modifications made are given , so that you dont download the whole rom...
NOTE- just read FAQ section in cm11 thread for more information on Delta updates.

One of the most appreciated Rom Built for galaxy Grand i9082 @xenon92 did put some serious green lantern efforts here (the reason why it has got amazing battery backup and performance)
personally, have used many Roms built for the device, but carbon Rom was the one with least problem when Run by ART compiler..
not only its RAM usage decreased from avg. 300 to 210, but also it supports Gapps in ART (while many Roms conflicts with gapps and give FCs in ART)
it has got many add-on features then just plain kitkat Roms...With the possibility of Halo getting Implemented it Near future(Depends on Carbon Team), lockscreen blur, notifications on lockscreen and Active display comprised as its one of good add on features, there is a Good battery backup (actually good,), with performance..
just give it a shot and u will love it

SlimKat
One of best thing about @xenon92 is that once he starts rolling new roms, he just cant stop ....
so again, introduced slimRom with kitkat power..
slimRoms are most light weight code based Roms , for performance!..they don't add any extra features(Halo and all) because performance is MUST
good when it comes to battery backup
just install and u will never regret it

Posting in the wrong section
@raghavsharmaxda you are posting in the wrong section!!!!
Post this in the general section.
The main reason I postes this here is coz many do come here for FAQ thread..
So its better that they read it here near FAQ thread (so that ppl think twice before posting noon kinda qsns in FAQ too and helpers do save sometime !!).
Still if its a trouble I will surely move it..
Thanks for advice...

it's great someone has decided to write down all the important things we need to know of our phones in one place... Thanks a lot @raghavsharmaxda :d

I also suggest adding site-specific Google search, it's a lot better than XDA search. It should help a lot of newbs.
Add "site:xda-developers.com" after the keywords i.e. "battery drain problem site:xda-developers.com" and type it into Google search. It also works on other sites, not just XDA.

Red lines for incorrect spelling
Hello,
Thanks for the rom, I've been a long time user. I have just noticed something strange. When I type something in Google Hangouts all of the words show red lines underneath as though they were not spelled correctly. How can I fix this? Is there something wrong with the dictionary?

Resolved: I switched the spell checker from HTC Spell Checker to Google Spell Checker and now things are working fine.

Nice find for a fix.
Another method would be to do into the keyboard settings and download the English US lang pack, for whatever reason it is missing and causing this problem, hope to has it resolved for next release.
P.S. nice job with the auto Q&A thread XDA. I'll try to keep it up to date, but hopefully others can help as well.

Can't get past lock screen after installing Bonestock ROM
I'm hoping for some help. I'm not a beginner with computers and Android, but I'm far from being an expert. My phone is S-Off and unlocked. I can't connect to it through adb, but can through fastboot. That may be the least of my problems for now, though.
Here's what happened: Using an SD card through USB OTB, I loaded Bonestock v5.1 to my phone, and it appeared to install correctly and boot to the lock screen. Whenever I swipe up to unlock it, though, the phone reboots itself. I did check the md5 after downloading the ROM, and it was fine. I'm on baseband 1.13.41.0702, HBoot 1.57 and firmware 5.28.605.2.
I'd really, really appreciate any help!
Never mind

Thanks for your quick response! I soft-bricked the thing again, and I think I know what caused it this time. Everything appeared to be working fine, right up until I signed on to my work e-mail account. It's on a Microsoft Exchange server. The catch is I have to agree to some fairly strict security policies -- including encrypting the phone -- to use it. The phone successfully went through all the sign-on steps until I entered my PIN to start the encryption process, and I started getting error messages -- HTC Sense Input has stopped, Settings has stopped, some other things stopped. Now, it won't boot past the splash screen, and when I boot into recovery (CWM 6.0.4.8) I can't get it to mount, wipe or do anything to any of the partitions, let alone do a factory reset.
Any ideas?
(sigh) another update

You're going to think I keep doing this just to boost my number of posts, but I have an update. While I couldn't do a reset through CWM, I was able to flash TWRP, which did allow me to reset and then reload BoneStock. I got the impression that doing the encryption necessary to get onto the Exchange server corrupted something. I'll try to figure out a workaround to get my work e-mail from some other device until I get this solved. From the short amount of time I've spent using BoneStock on my phone, I was very impressed and hope to be able to stick with it.
Thanks again -- and if anybody has any ideas about the encryption, I'd love to hear them.

I don't use the mail app but I *think* there is a MOD to bypass this encryption and I will look into that for you.
edit: can you flash the attached in recovery and see if it fixes or helps

Thanks - I'll give it a shot and post my results. Fingers crossed.
works - I think.
The mail-test file seems to have done the trick. I'm now getting work email pushed to my phone and it seems to be working well. That part of it, at least. The Exchange account isn't showing up in either the native calendar app nor in acalendar+, which is a great app, by the way.
Thank you so much for your help, andybones - I'll definitely thank you in this thread and your main rom thread, and I'll see what I can do about a donation.
If you have any ideas on the calendar issue, I'd appreciate hearing them.
Update: I'm sorry, but I just had to give up. It looked like mail-test was going to work, at least for syncing mail, but the system just became really unstable somehow. I'd get numerous messages about different apps or services closing, and the interface really slowed down quite a bit, sometimes for 20 seconds at a time before it would acknowledge any input. Once again, thank you for all your help - I wish I could have made this work. I found what looks to be like a good, recent stock ROM and the encryption for my work Exchange server is progressing well as I type.
Cheers!
ROM Question
Hi Andy,
Have a question.
I am try out your 5.2. Trying to solve a bluetooth issue with a 2014 Nissan Van.
I have installed 5.2 and Elite Kernel - stock with wake features only.
I am using trickster to set the L2W. Works perfect.
If I install either of the elite kernels on L2S works. Wake does not. Don't know if it a kernel or ROM issue.
The other question is how do eliminate the second set of captive buttons above the main set? (EDIT: Only shows up in certain apps, Realcalc
Thanks for work on this. I like it.

Sorry for such a late response!
The kernel question need to be asked in the Elite kernel thread, as you will get the needed help their.
(let me know if you need assistance finding their thread or anything)
I am useless when it comes to anything kernel related.
Bluetooth for your Nissan however should work just fine with the stock kernel.
as for the second set of capacitive buttons, this is only in some apps?
This could be a number of things
1) kernel related, the custom kernel could have a setting that turns it on, so maybe in trickster it might have an option? can't say as I've never seen the buttons. (I'll download the aforementioned app though with my current stock set-up and see the results.
2) it could be something that I could fix by adding a string to the build.prop. I know that in framework-res.apk there is an option to turn the soft keys on like the M8 has, but if those aren't on in the main screen then that isn't it, but the build.prop string might be of use.
3) it could be out of my control and baked into that certain application.
EDIT: well, I downloaded realcalc and I have no buttons..
so I'm going to have to say that you did something to cause this.
User Error, I call it.
Nothing you can really do about it because how were you to know?
Here lies the issue - how do we fix this.
here is what I see:

I am running clean flash of 5.2 with the greyyy inversion theme flashed over it. stock kernel.
Nothing else except a whole hell of a lot of apps removed and barely any downloaded, I am a minimalist to an extreme, it's how I get such great battery life.
I have only 49 apps left in my app drawer. LOL
Bonestock 4.3 Mail.apk
Been running your ROM for over a year and love it. New job and have a need for mail.apk. what's the least destructive way of adding this to the ROM? I planned on flashing the latest release but noticed it doesn't have Aroma built in, which I'm assuming means no Chinese menu of options? Thanks, Andy!
PS: belatedly saw this second thread, so technically this is a double-post.
Hey Andy, wondering if you would be willing to make a modification to the EPS page for me or could provide a link to instructions on doing so. Just want to replace the stock HTC SMS link with the google messenger SMS app. Thanks in advance!
