[Info] Cheaper, better Galaxy Nexus for AT&T and T-Mobile

For those people on US GSM carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile) who can't or don't want to switch to Verizon and are waiting for or interested in a Galaxy Nexus cheaper, better than an imported GN, read on.
This purpose of this thread is to compile some data for turning a Verizon Galaxy Nexus into a working phone for GSM carriers. This thread will be updated often. The Verizon GN might turn out to be cheaper and better than importing a $700 phone if we turn a Verizon GN (dual CDMA/LTE) into a phone for GSM with some hacking and tinkering.
Think about it. So far, the main differences between the international and Verizon GN are:
International Galaxy Nexus
GSM/HSPA+
16GB storage
1750 mHz battery
slightly thinner than Verizon GN
$700 (imported, unlocked)
Verizon Galaxy Nexus
CDMA/LTE
32GB storage
1850 mHz battery
slightly bulkier than GSM GN
$199 (2-year contract, data, rumored)
Overall, the Verizon GN appeals more because of the bigger storage (which is better because of the lack of SD card or USB mass storage support), 1850 mHz battery (more juice), and LTE (which you can always turn off by rooting if you don't like the battery drain).
Ultimately, if we can early terminate the Verizon contract and fully unlock the Verizon GN with some hacking and tinkering, we may be able to get a cheaper, better, fully functional 32GB, LTE supporting Galaxy Nexus for the people on GSM carriers.
All we need to confirm is if the Verizon Galaxy Nexus has the hardware that can support the GSM bands. Google and Samsung have said that all Galaxy Nexus variants are penta-band (which might mean support for GSM in the Verizon GN).

Thanks to these guys above for enlightening the issue, so my conclusion is that
you can't do ***t with a Verizon Galaxy Nexus on GSM carriers. TOO BAD FOR THE PEOPLE ON AT&T and T-MOBILE. JUST BUY THE $700 PHONE with 16 GB, 1750 mHz, and BLAH BLAH.

Solution for people on AT&T:
Wait for release of AT&T version (possibly in Dec., but then again, AT&T just got on the train, so most likely before end of Jan.)
It just cleared FCC

I'm not sure that the Verizon variant of the Galaxy Nexus even has a sim-card slot. It's my understanding that CDMA phones usually do not. It wouldn't make any sense for Verizon to put one in their phones.

My thoughts on this is that both the GSM GN and CDMA GN are dual GSM/CDMA. Only difference is the HSPA+ for the GSM GN and LTE for the CDMA GN. But ultimately, this is just rumor and we need confirmation that Verizon GN (dual CDMA/LTE) can support GSM bands.
2. Can you terminate the $199 verizon GN as soon as you get it? What is Verizon's early termination policy?

It has a SIM card for the LTE radio. It has NO GSM radio, it has a CDMA radio (it's not a "worldphone" containing a GSM AND a CDMA radio). It won't operate on a GSM network without a GSM radio.
At best you'll be able to get AT&T's LTE service in the 5 cities that it's live in. I don't know off hand if AT&T does voice over LTE. If they don't you won't get any voice service even in LTE areas.

Dude spent all that time writing this post and the Verizon Nexus doesn't even have GSM radios.

Well this is nothing new for Verizon users. Most people don't travel internationally often, so no big deal. Just pick up a cheap $30 prepaid cell if you go.
Why can't phones made to just work on all carriers? CDMA + GSM Penta-Band. I know some phones have CDMA and GSM (for international on Verizon)... why not just do it right and make it available globally at the same time. Then carriers can subsidy it or not... but it would reduce people from buying on a carrier's subsidy, paying an ETF, and leaving.

the verizon version that passed the FCC has NO GSM bands in it. so this is never happening.
an AT&T ONLY version of the GNex just passed the FCC, so if your on AT&T you can wait and get your own.
if your on t-mobile, go buy the international one or wait god knows how long.

Odd they would have make an ATT version in addition to the penta band international version. On second thought, I bet ATT version will have LTE as well. That makes the most sense

We don't know that it's AT&T only. FCC doesn't seem to test GSM900 and 1800, so it could have those. It's definitely missing AWS though.

Looks like the US still won't be getting a GSM version officially for a little bit longer.

It is only going to work on a CDMA network and what the chart means that it is global on any international network that supports CDMA (which there are many that I cannot think of off the top of my head).

Galaxy Nexus GSM vs. CDMA

What's the differences between the two, if any?
I've been contemplating whether or not I should get the GSM version or CDMA. Are there any major differences between the two?

If you're on sprint, you kind of need to change to Verizon if you want the CDMA version. CDMA also has LTE aka true 4G, so speed will probably be better. VZW also has further reaching 3G coverage than AT&T, generally. On top of this, in my experience VZW's customer service is great, but everyone's mileage varies there.
The GSM version is not "official" for the US - you will have to pay full retail price on one ($600-ish) and sign up with tmobile or att to use it. No carrier subsidy.
Without further information about you, it's hard to say anything more.

I think the op was asking about the hardware spec. CDMA version has bigger battery and twice the storage space.

Verizon comes with 4.0.1 with a small update leading it to 4.0.2

Yes, verizon version will not work on ATT.
In the US is very simple. Two types of radios: CDMA and GSM.
Verizon and Sprint use CDMA.
ATT and TMO use GSM.
The smaller carriers generally use either CDMA or GSM and piggy back off the larger carrier towers.
Hopefully android devices which have hardware and software capable of using both radios will arrive and it'll become less of an issue, but as of now, the galaxy nexus is either GSM or CDMA, but not both.

There is no True 4G in the US.

Your CDMA version has a CDMA radio, a LTE radio, and antennas tuned to the correct LTE and CDMA frequencies used by Verizon.
The GSM version has a GSM radio with antenna turned to all common GSM frequencies.
The radios and antenna hardware are completely different in these versions and so by this fact the firmware (the software or flash able 'radio') is 100% different. Flashing the wrong one can cause all kinds of issues from not working until reflashing the correct ones yo bricking your radio (depending on how the firmware is flashed, size differences, etc.)
CDMA and GSM and LTE are all very different. LTE is based off GSM which is why you have a SIM card in LTE (though CDMA can have SIM cards if that is how the company set it up, which also is why without the SIM card you can't use your CDMA parts either).

Sure it is. Just like EDGE is "officially" 3G whenever carriers think it's in their marketing interest to say so. No one owns the term "3G" or "4G" so there's no such thing as "true" or "official". It is certainly marked performance advance over HSPA+, with real world LTE uplink speeds higher than HSPA downlink. It's at least as big of a jump from EDGE to UMTS (200kbps to 600kbps) was.
If you're referring to LTE Advanced, expect that technology to be labelled 5G when it hits the carriers. Why? Why the hell not? It's just a stupid marketing gimmick. Most consumers don't even know what the hell it means, with something like 70% of the population thinking that the iPhone 4/4S has 4G. Mo G's mo money.

Just to go along with what you are saying, the ITU changed it so that the current "4G" techs such as LTE, WIMAX, and HSPA+ are considered 4G.

Unlock Verizon Nexus for T-Mobile?

So I'm thinking of buying a Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
I know it has a sim tray so i'm wondering if it can be unlocked for T-Mobile.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sim tray maybe but the vzw one is cdma and the GSM one is...well..GSM.
Different technologies! Not compatible.

I have the Verizon phone and yes it does have a SIM card but it uses different radios. Verizon uses CDMA/LTE and T-Mobile uses GSM so you can put whatever SIM card you want in there but since it uses different radios it won't physically be able to talk to T-Mobile (or any GSM carrier's towers)

btw, what happen if you travel away USA in a country without CDMA?.
At least, the CDMA iPhone have a simcard tray but it's locked until your operator wants.

Starting with Verizon's 4G LTE phones they all require SIM cards. They were also used in 3G global phones (my old blackberry and droid pro had them) but the CDMA Galaxy Nexus isn't global so you'd just SOL.

@[email protected] can't believe people are asking this question. The phone has been out for over 3 months now.

Besides, the SIM card slot is specifically for LTE... as in, the SIM card is an LTE SIM card. LTE, not HSPA+.
I can only think, because the AT&T (HSPA+) model would be more prolific among sellers, that you'll have a better time finding a better price than a Verizon (LTE) one.

Then you have no service. Grab a cheap GSM phone and pre-paid SIM.

Try the yellow or the sky blue Galaxy Nexus. Those ones will work on both Verizon and T-Mobile.

Back when verizon did both GSM and CDMA I had a verizon phone that I got to work on tmobile. I think it might have been a windows phone, honestly it was a while ago. I had to pay for a network unlock code and patch a radio or something....anyway, just wanted to say that it is in fact possible. My phone did brick in about two months, but that might have been from getting it wet...anyway...Good luck!

Total non sequitur. The phone in question must have been an old "world phone". The Verizon Galaxy Nexus never had any GSM radio whatsoever.

For the CDMA GNex you would need either a CDMA or neutral carrier/MVNO (such as StraightTalk, Tracfone, etc.). I have a CDMA ex-VZW GNex (now running Unlegacy-Android 7.1) that I am taking to Tracfone (replacing a Tracfone feature phone) because Tracfone uses a mix of carrier towers (depending on location, either T-Mobile or VZW). My current feature phone uses T-Mobile towers - because I am bringing a CDMA phone under BYOP, I have to ask the carrier (Tracfone, in this case) to create a custom SIM Kit for the brought phone, and thus have to communicate the IMEI and MEID of the incoming phone (this information is in the phone under Settings). Yes - this also applies to lifeline feature phones supplied by Tracfone/Safelink (if Safelink supplied the phone, Tracfone is your MVNO). If you want a GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus, you would want the maguro (the Galaxy Nexus in AT&T Mobility or T-Mobile guise); because GSM is more popular overseas, they tend to get exported compared to CDMA or W-CDMA (Verizon or Sprint, respectively).

[Q] Unlocking SPH-L710 4.1.2 for use outside of the US

hey I'm new to the forums and rooting and I'm trying to unlock my Sprint SPH-L710 so that I can use it on a carrier outside of the states. If this thread has already been started sorry for the redundant post, if not can someone post how to unlock a SPH-L710 4.1.2 from Sprint so that I can use it in Canada please.

The Sprint S3 is a CDMA device, and not GSM. There is nothing to unlock for use in Canada. It doesn't accept a SIM card (though there is one embedded for LTE purposes in the U.S).

ok interesting, I was told that I could use it on a network here in Canada that also uses CDMA as long as it was unlocked but maybe they thought that I had the GSM version.

[Q] Help with Verizon Nexus converted to Prepaid Please?!?

Hey guys I am going to try and make this quick and please forgive me I am new to the Nexus. I have been all over this forum and others e.g. XDA, Android Central etc. I have gotten a lot of different info. about how to switch my Verizon Nexus to Prepaid. However I just bought this phone at my bosses pawn shop w/out the SIM card and the guy who sold the phone said it did have service @ one time. In device info the network is unknown, Mobile Network is unknown:0, no phone number, service stat. out of service, MIN: unknown, but does have the MEID & IMEI numbers. I know no SIM card has a lot to do with this info. Verizon will not unlock it for me so I was wondering what I needed to do to be able to unlock this bad boy. I have root and JBSourcery flashed and loving it I might add. Do I just need to get the SIM card so when I use the # and number keys to unlock it the phone will not tell me "mobile network not available" Or is there another way that someone would be willing to help me with please. I will keep reading to see what I can find but any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys and I look forward to hearing some ideas.

Are u trying to go to a gsm network? Is so u can't. Technically u can't go to no other network. CDMA device are ment to stay on the original network. And if u are trying to go t a gsm network you are waisting your time. Only reason the Verizon nexus has a sim card is for 4g lte. Cell service only works with CDMA.

Right I know that from what I have been reading. I talked to TMobile and they said the phone is compatible with them and they offer the SIM card as well. I was going to go go Verizon today and get the SIM card and try to get the phones info In their system. That way I can USD the dial pad and try to unlock it and use it on their prepaid plan if I have to. I am not picky as far as what company's prepaid I want to use really I just don't want a contract.

you cannot use the verizon galaxy nexus on a tmobile network
CDMA is not GSM.
there is a sim slot on the vzw nexus, but it is for LTE only. voice still uses CDMA.

I know that after reading a little more into it. I got the SIM card and now it is picking up verizon network. So really I am SOL with this phone unless I get a contract is that correct? Forgive my lack of knowledge of CDMA etc. I am working on trying to get there by reading more and more about it.
