[Q] [APP] News & Weather / Genie Widget - Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

Hi!
This application came with my stock phone.
I like it very much, it´s light, reliable and easy to use.
But I have a small problem...
I live in Portugal, and so to receive the local news, I need to have my phone in Portuguese (selectable at 1st configuration).
I would like to have my phone in English (by choosing i.e. UK country), but then I do not get the local news to me.
How can I change the news location / feed for this?
The application does not have that option.
Cheers in advance,
Miguel

Maybe something like editing a line somewhere...
Any ideas gentleman?
Cheers!

If this is still an issue to you, the app "morelocale 2" might help, you might be able to set the locale as Portugal and leave your language English and have it work.

My UK t-mobile one does not have arabic under locales (but it only has 6 choices)
I've bought mine 2 days ago. Looking at the locale i only have Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. So bear in mind that the phone may have different language and locations depending on where you bought it from. Clearly mine is an Eastern European version.
P.S: Amazing phone. I'm in love!

Got it from your local dealer? Does it have Baltic languages aswell? Not that i care, my phones are always on english.
I see they have added us(Baltics) in locale. On Hero sold here there were only the first five. I was hoping we get the Nordic one, but yeh... Eastern europe makes sense. But why not other countries then?
I really dislike the segmented markets and versions in technological devices...

desire test
i would like to test on Desire this:
Outlook contacts + calendar
-sync with Desire over the microUSB cable. does the Outlook Calendar + Condatcs sync without data being transferred to Google Gmail/Google Calendar and so on ?
- does the Sync happen automatically (like ActiveSync with Windows Mobile devices) on background in Windows XP/7 ... or do you have to start anything manually after you plug in the device ?
Browser with integrated flash video player:
- could you open www.youtube.com on the integrated google web browser and try to play videos in 360, 480, 720p ?
SD card:
- is the Desire shipped with SD card, or without ?
LCD Screen:
- does it glare a lot on sunlight ?
- is there any screen protector shipped with Desire ?
------
sorry it's not ROM cooking related, but i would be interested anyway, if you find the time to test and answer

Outlook contacts + calendar
-I know that the syncing is possible and you can set it to automatic, but not if its pushed through to G-Apps, i think not though
Browser with integrated flash video player:
- When you go to the regular youtube website, and the flashplayer is loaded, you see a big play button (no bar on the bottom). When you hit it, the youtube app pops up and plays your video. Good news though: theres an option for high quality video in there, which imo gives perfect quality (and i have high standards)
SD card:
- Mine came with a class 2 4GB microsd, already in the phone (so htc put it there, all desire's should have one)
LCD Screen:
- I did notice in the bus today that its very reflective, but if you up the brightness to 100%, theres no problem at all.
- No, but you can buy them off ebay, theres a supplier in the UK that has an unending supply of 6packs for about 2 euro
* Note: it's not an LCD screen, but an amoled one
Also for anybody who's interested:
Due to the nature of the screen and the fact htc & google ignore websafe colors, some shades of grey look a little pinkish. Its not at all anoying or ugly, and its barely noticable. Still, its there.
Hope this helped you,
Nick
thanks for the answers.

I went from the Diamond to the Magic (second android phone) and never looked back. Seriously, once you've tried android, you will wonder how you could ever live with WM.
Try borrowing a device from a friend or ask for a demo in a store?
Desire owns
Clovek1 I had a diamond too and yesterday I got the Desire...Man let me tell you, it's a huge step forward.
The only thing bellow "great" is the camera but I don't really care. The interface is fantastic and the speed of the thing is really amazing.
I have the same problem with the locales, as it displays only 6(the greek language isn't there), but I got MoreLocale 2.
Also I can't see the paid apps as they're not supported in Greece atm.
i am using Outlook Calendar synchronization in my office quite often (daily). The Google Calendar is blocked in my company, for security reasons.
Therefore i would like to be sure, that the synchronization really works.
btw. how do you transfer your contacts from Windows Mobile to Android ? Through Outlook ?

I tried HTC Hero recently (borrowed for a short time). It was quite fast compared with Diamond.

It depends on the version of Exchange being used by your company.
Exchange 2007 is syncing calendar just fine but Exchange 2010 has a problem in that it initially syncs but then generates an error that causes all mail/contact sync to fail (stop syncing calendar and mail/contacts sync fine again). I can't vouch for Exchange 2003 as I don't know anybody using it with Android.
Having just moved from WinMo to Android the contacts migration is seamless - you're talking to an Exchange Server, give it the right credentials and all your contacts and mail will flow sweetly. My old Kaiser hasn't been plugged in to a PC to Sync ever - and neither will the Desire. Why, when it can all be done over the air via Exchange.
Now if only Tasks would be supported as standard without having to buy something extra.

Aaron
Yes there appears to be a problem with Exchange 2010. When the Desire arrived here, I was still connecting successfully to Exchange 2003. Since then we have upgraded to Exchange 2010, and Calendar sync now fails. As you say, it fails badly enough to stall mail and contacts sync too.
By disabling Calendar sync on the phone, mail and contacts then sync nicely. Enable Calendar sync, and if your Exchange is 2010, it al goes wrong.
I note you are syncing fine to Exchange 2007, so this must be a weakness with Exchange 2010, but it is hard to blame the Exchange server, as my iPods/iPhones sync just fine with Exchange 2010.
So in summary, there appears to be a show-stopper sync error on HTC Sense Exchange 2010 support which thwarts Calendar sync. Here's hoping there is a fix for this shortly, as the Desire becomes a no-go for corporates until this is sorted.

HTC Desire language pack

Hi Guys, just got my Desire today, so far i,m impressed but for one problem.I live in Australia, I bought the fone from China, I either need to find out how to turn of predictive text in SMS/MMS messaging and Google search, or chnge the language pack. Although I have english language on the fone, I have (english Taiwan) (english malaysia) ect ect but no english Australia , USA or any other English speaking country.
How do I change this, I want to rid the fone of the extra un needed language packs or whatever HTC calls them. Its a real pain trying totype an address in Google search and having to tap the so called predictive text alternative.
Please help guys.
Other than that I,m statring to like this thing, I come from Iphone 3Gs so things are slightly different, and guess what, I now have reception in my home.
Morelacate2
Morelocate2
And exactly where would one find this file, I googled it, and guess what, Google directed me back to this post
It's actually called "More Locale 2" and you find it on the Market.

[Q] news location

Hi all,
Living in Spain and when i search for news feeds, i get spanish ones. Ok when i pop into gibraltar on A gib wifi, i get english . Is there anyway to change this, like spoofing wifi or something?
thanks tom

[Q] Language pack

Is it possible to request a language pack for rooted Desire?
I'm looking for English Malaysia (or Malay language) for my Desire. It is really pain in a butt trying to type a SMS because the apps kept auto suggest a word. I could turn off the auto suggest but then english sms will be harder without it.
So, maybe someone can tell me where I could get it from.

[Q] google navigation not using preferred text-to-voice language

My text-to-voice language is set to UK english and I have also enabled the 'force programs to use this choice' option yet the navigation app still uses the american english voice.
Anyone else seeing this on the desire?
Maybe the uk choice is not installed?
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
Both UK and US English packs seem to be installed and are available as language selections. The 'listen to an example option' indeed correctly uses the UK english voice, but google navigation refuses to honour that choice... Does anyone know where maps stores its language choice as it seems to ignore the 'voice input and output' settings?
(this is on close-to-stock gingerbread ROM with maps v5.8.0)
I had the same problem - it's annoying having a robot tell you what to do, even worse to have an American robot bossing you around.
After a lot of tinkering, the problem seems to be that Navigation gets confused if your global language and your text-to-speech language aren't the same. So you need to change your global language to English (UK) in Menu / Language and Keyboard / Select Language. The trouble is, the stripped down Gingerbread for HTC Desire doesn't have English (UK) as an option - only English (US). So you also need to run a little app called "Any Locale, a switching widget" (by leohoo) available free on the market, to let you select English (UK).
Once you have selected English (UK) as your global language, you can actually delete the "Any Locale" app to save storage space.
And ta-da! Annoying English robot is back.
Thanks, it does look like a Google Maps bug, but this works....
UK language
@ SolentUK
THANKS a bunch for that app info! Finally got rid of that American [email protected]%.
It's ok. I can say that. I'm American.
I love the British accent. It sounds just like Ferb from Phineas and Ferb.
Yeah, I like to watch cartoons.... still.
Speech in Navigation is stuck
OKay. Here's the scenario.
Got tired of U.S. female robot very quickly.
Selected English UK whch sounds like Ferb from Phineas and Ferb, if you watch Disney...
Had to use Any Locale to switch to the English UK
Work for a few days, then intermittently went back to U.S. Female robot.
Downloaded SVOX and the voice Oliver UK. He worked for weeks.
All of a sudden now, when I start Navigation(Google) the only things Oliver says is "50 feet". Tthen in about 20 seconds or so, he repeats "50 feet. 50 feet."
Reset all of the language inputs and even tried using different languages. Still Oliver comes on and says "50 feet."
Uninstalled SVOX and Oliver. rebooted phone, but still Oliver comes on saying, yep. you guessed it, "50 feet".
Tried resetting languages ifor the default and langauge inputs and text to speech...again and used Any Locale. Nope!
I know that Google Nav can be buggy a little, but c'mon!
Any help is welcome. I'm excellent at navigating and reading maps. Don't need a GPS, but damn it! It's supposed to be a feature that works, therefore I want to use it. It makes a fun toy.
