Verizon CDMA Play for $50? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Found one on Craigslist for that. Just wondering what you guys thought of buying the phone solely as a mobile gaming and music device. I like it because of the buttons, but does it run today's games OK with the Play's hardware? My N4 runs them just fine. Looking for something to replace my PSP with. How about emulators? Like I said, just looking to replace my PSP. TIA.

There's an neogeo emu out there? Wow that's cool. Thanks man for the info. I may wait till I see a GSM available just to be able to use it more. But seeing you use all those on there is a nice decision swayer.

There is Neo.emu on the market its xperia play optimized, the same author makes many emus that are xperia play optimized.

Sweet man. I never really considered the play before. Was just checking on CL for a phone for my girl. She wants a keyboard. Thinking of a G2. Then that popped up.

DO not buy the R800x model. Lack of development in customs roms and lack developer support. The best roms for the xperia play is gingerbread but they only work with the international model. Get a R800i or R800a to get the BEST of the xperia play. Sold my r800x for $50 verizon screwed up that device.

I would completely agree as I had a VZ R800x before snagging my current GSM model. But I think OP is looking for it for gaming only. But if he wants to dabble in custom roms then this model is a "Do Not Touch" as development is pretty much nonexistant. Not that I don't appreciate the devs who worked on it its just no where near as many choices as what's availed to GSM users.

Yea I know GSM dev support vs CDMA support. But I do have ORD. Well better yet, I like a stable with lots of options for customization. I don't like slim ROMs. Load that sucker up. I do want some dev support, but if it has a stable custom, that will do just fine.

So far r800x has no custom gb roms. There is cm9.1 which is stable and emulators play well on it but ginger bread is the best for gaming. If youre not going to use phone service then you can always use a gsm rom on the cdma version. Everything will work fine but youll have no service.

Huh. Thanks didn't know that. That's pretty cool. Good to know. I'd probably end up uninstalling the phone apk so as not to call 911 on accident.
Last time I dealt with GSM and CDMA in the same dev sub section was back with my Touch Pro. Just had to be sure not to flash a CDMA version. And Sprint and Verizon ROMs were interchangeable, just had different radios to flash iirc.

Its an old rom but True Ancestor works there is also the xdarmarios patch that allows any GSM rom to work on the cdma model. Some GSM roms will not show the home screen this patch will fix that.
Edit - Here you go, remember though it will fix the homescreen issues but you will still not be able to use the device for phone function, ihowever if you just want to use it as a gaming device then have a field day. I would recommend, from my tastes, NXT L.E its a 2.3.7 based ROM.

I would say you definitely get the xperia play !!

Well I emailed him. No answer. But he reposted the ad. So I texted him. Sent two messages today, no response. Guess he doesn't want to sell it.

The PSP can't play with the Xperia Play or the Galaxy SII, but if you got the play you can play Modern Combat with the S II in Multiplayer using Local Wifi mode
That's cool I didn't know that. I'll have to try that out.
Would that be possible with any other phone other than the Galaxy S2 ?

how big is sony's pie wrt the xperia play? shame that the psp (from sony) and the x.play (also from sony) cannot play together. which games can be played between the x.play and the sgs2?
You must remember that when the xperia play was designed, half of the company was still Ericsson. It would be very unlikely to have that sort of connectivity, when only half of the company was Sony at the time.

The Original Final Fantasy Game is OUT NOW!!

I know that alot of FF fans enjoyed FFIII so much and now we can get more!!
Its looks like its just a quick port of the iOS version but still it works perfectly.

+1. Just got FPse and its pretty sick. Playing FF7 right now and it plays perfectly. I'll look into FF1 for Android. Playing FF3 for Android as well which totally kicks ass. Thanks for the heads up OP.
Its not worth the money, its a direct ios port. When it becomes the ANDROID VERSION, I will buy it.

It is not a port is the Android Japanese relesae but in english, it does not contains the extra dungeons on IOS version.
However is better than nothing...I dont want to install FPSE and the PS Rom on my PLAY... I own all FF's on the PS platform.
I was so confused when I saw "Original Final Fantasy", "FPSe", and "PS ROM" all in the same thread. I never realized the original was updated and re-released, as I fell out of the Final Fantasy scene after FF7. I might just have to pick this one up.

Game pad and dual booting?

I am planning to buy this phone for $50(awesome) and I want to know your thoughts on the game pad. What controller is is most similar to? I have almost all game consoles besides PSP go. (Even Retro ones) and how is the experience with dual booting?

The controls of the xperia play remind of the gameboy advance and ps controller combined. The gamepad is awesome and the touchpad is enjoyable if it is functional in certain games. The touchpad on the gamepad is causing quite a stir in developing custom roms for this device. Be warned though not all xperia play customs roms have functional touchpads. Touchpads are not supported in fxp or cm because they are not allowed to hack sony firmware and it is patented. I can't answer your question about dual booting sorry. Xperia play is a unique device on its own and I know for sure if my xperia play breaks im buying another one regardless how old the device is. The community is pretty much small so you much know or seen everyone talking in the forums.
For dual-booting, you will only be able to do this with similar versions of Android, because the kernels won't be compatible (you can't dual-boot Gingerbread and ICS for example).
kieran was working on dual boot but it seems he gave up

HOV with Android 2.3.7?

Does anyone have heard about downgrading HOV to Android 2.3.7? Is that possible?
Sent from USG Ishimura using Connection Module
It's possible. But NO ONE will do it. It would mean reverse engineering almost all of the code. That's too much work. Why would you want to go back to gingerbread anyways? That's a major downgrade in software from 4.0. I see no point in it.

I know, but I'm a real player And with many of new games there are problems to play smoothly or even running them on our phones... and theres few older games I really want to play and they will runs smoothly, but they won't work on ICS and JB

Very possible to do. There are some phones closely resembling hardware to ours, but some stuff would be tricky. Will someone actually work on it though is the question at hand. Everyone wants ICS+ these days.

GB is nowhere near as smooth as ics/jb. Even my old hero have a smoother scroll in ICS than in GB. That being said, it will be so hard to make wifi, bluetooth and camera working, not to mention that we will need a kernel done from scratch and i am 1000% sure that maxwen doesn't want to do another one for us! Just be happy that you at least have 4.1.2 and in the future we will have 4.2!

everyone could do it, you just need guidance, that's all. no one was raised knowing everything - you know what they say.
Porting GB, I was thinking this the other day. Gingerbread on this would most likely be a fun Rom, as in nothing really working. It would be an accomplishment though.

1) What is "KLP"?
2) I want GB because new games pisses me off, especially those from Gameloft... but there're some games form GL great times, e.g. Dungeon Hunter 2 or N.O.V.A. 2... last days I wanted to play Gangstar West Coast Hustle and Miami Vindication, but with no luck :/... I was thinking about Moder Combat 2 Black Pegasus, too, but I've found version working on ICS few months ago
But if no one likes to get back to old times sometimes, then we have no reasons to talk about that...

LOL, the ppsspp emulator is available in the playstore. You can dump your psp games, and it just emulates the games to be compatible
As for your question manish, i dont think it shall be compatible with our ace, it cant even run the android games properly. You would need a hi-end mobile for that. However, i haven't said no. If you have a PSP, then its worth trying. But remember the games shall be extremely light (in psp speak).
