For some reason my ext4 formatted 32GB MicroSD card is not being recognized from my file manager. However, when I boot up in TWRP recovery, I can see the SD card and its contents.
This morning was the last time I was able to browse my files in the external SD partition. I downloaded Spotify, downloaded some songs for offline listening and that is when I received an error message that I was out of disk space. When I checked my internal storage, I still have 4GB left but the external SDcard is nowhere to be found.
Is there an android utility I can use to restore my access to the SDcard paritition?
You need to format it to fat32, I had to do the same once rooted. You will need a utility on a pc to format it. Eric

Confirm your kernel is supporting Ext4 , some custom kernel doesn't.
Hi,
I'm using ROM CM 10.1 nightly 2013-05-01. I have downgraded to CM 10.1 2013-04-01 nightly and even formatted the internal storage then flashed back to stock ROM.
Same thing. The stock Samsung ROM says I have a blank external SD card. CM 10.1 ROM says there is no external SD card.
However, when I boot to TWRP (2.5 version) recovery, I can see the external SDCard just fine.
I would love to go back to FAT32, but need the ex4 because I have a Linux installation that requires at least 6GB partition to work.
My setup with ext4 has been working for about a month, up until yesterday. I have no idea why this happened all of a sudden.
The external ext4 formatted SD card did pop back briefly right after reinstallation of CM 10.1. I was even able to browse the files with no lag or errors. Few minutes however, it disappeared again. Frustrating.
Is there an android utility I can use? I know CM 10.1 doesn't recognize exfat.

By the way, I just inserted in another ext4 formatted SD Card. This one is recognized immediately and I can access my files.
So I am thinking that the other SDcard not being recognized by the android OS may have developed a read issue. Is there a way to recover without having to reformat the card?
The non working sdcard is displaying this message when accessed by a file manager: "directory read banned".
Is there a way to unban it?
The phone can read other ext4 formatted cards.
Okay. I inserted the sdcard in my linux laptop. Apparently for some reason, it is now being mounted FAT32 formatted drive. I guess that explains the read banned message in android because of the presence of a file larger than 4GB.
Is there a way to repair this painlessly?

I’ve recently upgraded the SD card in my desire to a 16GB class 4 and its giving me some major issues! I’m running OpenDesire 4.0.1 and the sequence of events was as follows:
1. Inserted new SD card and formatted with gParted: 512MB Ext3 and the rest FAT32 (Ext3 partition was at the end – hope that’s correct!)
2. Rebooted fine and all the apps stored on the internal memory were present and correct. Those that I had moved to the old SD card were missing so I uninstalled them.
3. Tried to install Estrongs file manager from appbrain using the fast web installer function. This downloaded OK but the phone rebooted during installation. Tried again but same thing occurred again.
4. Tried plugging phone into PC. USB debugging mode started up fine but I wasn’t offered the option of mounting the SD card
5. Unplugged USB and inspected phone storage menu to find that no SD card was mounted
6. Rebooted a few times, removed and reinstalled SD card etc – still no SD card detected by the phone
7. Booted into recovery, connect phone to PC and used the “mount USB” option in Clockwork mod. This was successful and allowed me to inspect my SD card on the PC. Noticed that Dalvik cache and some apps (those not included as part of the ROM) were present on the SD card (FAT32 partition) – OpenDesire must have moved them there automatically (but why to the FAT32 partition and not Ext3?).
8. Rebooted phone out of recovery to check that those apps that appeared on the SD card were accessible in Android. Found that they were, which is strange given that the SD card was still not being detected by the system.
9. Decided to mount SD card again via clockwork recovery method and formatted the FAT32 partition with gParted.
10. Rebooted phone and found SD card still not detected and all those apps that had magically been moved to the SD card by OpenDesire were (unsurprisingly) gone.
11. Tried a few adb commands that I found in another thread but didn’t seem to have any effect.
Out of ideas – can anyone help?! Will try old SD card tonight and see what happens, but I don’t think there is a problem with the new card since I managed to successfully mount it through clockwork. I’m also wondering why the apps were moved to the FAT32 partition instead of Ext3? I thought that’s what the Ext3 partition was for?
Cheers
The FAT32 partition must be the first partition on your SD card, and it seems from what you've said that you created the EXT partition first.
Regards,
Dave
no the the FAT32 was first then the Ext3
OK fixed. Managed to mount the SD card on the PC via clockworkmod, deleted all partitions and rebooted phone. Phone detected SD card and asked me to format it. Did that and then added a ext partition using gParted.
SD Card Cant be Detected on Desire(Solved)

Hey guys total noob here to android and flashing ROMs. I rooted my phone and flashed to TuchMi S3X 5.0. First installed 3.0, then went to 5.0. In both builds, my SD card wouldn't mount, i'd get a message saying "Preparing SD card" in the notification bar, then "SD card is safe to remove." When attemping to mount through Settings, nothing happens, and I can't mount in recovery either.
I've tried reformatting every which way I can think of, but still no luck. The same card worked fine in stock.
Any tips? I've searched all over the place but couldn't find anything pertaining to TuchMi S3X and external SD cards not mounting.
So i've determined that the issue is with the exFAT file system. If I format the card in FAT32 it works fine, but this is a 64GB card, and I want to use exFAT.
If i let the phone format the SD card when it is unformatted, it uses exFAT but the card STILL isn't able to be mounted...do I need a custom kernel or something?

So bottom line the card still showed 64GB and worked as long as it was FAT32?
Ive installed pacman rom on my note 2 but the sd status appeared as damaged and required a format .
I didn't format and went to recovery and restored the stock rooted rom 4.1.2 that I have backed up and it backed up successfully.
But the sd card appeard as damaged also in the stick rom .
I have backed up the backup files that were in the card , I can add photos and videos later .
Is there a way to fix the card without formating it?

Try a card reader.

I believe your sd card is 64gb and formatted in exFAT.
Pacman ROM is based on AOSP/CM (CMIIMW) therefore exFAT is not supported. Try to reformat you sdcard in FAT32 format (you will loss capability to store >4gb file in your sdcard) but it works.
same problem
I had just the same situation with Paranoid Android and 64Gb exFAT formatted card several days ago. I knew that PA (like any AOSP ROM) can't see exFAT filesystem. But I only wanted to test PA for a few days so I decided not to format card or remove it from the phone. I did nothing with the card in the PA ROM. Nevertheless I found my card damaged after returning to stock 4.1.2 ROM (just like ahmedss79 did). Neither Android nor windows could read my card.
But AROMA Filemanager saw the card and could read and write it. I used PhilZ Touch CWM with Aroma Filemanager and copied all important files from sd card to internal storage.
And when I opened my "damaged" sd card in partition manager (in Windows, using a card reader) I noticed that it has two partitions: small 12Mb FAT before big 59 Gb unknown partition. I guess this FAT partition was automatically created by PA after its fist boot and exactly this FAT partition made the card damaged as it wiped all file tables, located in the first couple of Mb of the original exFAT partition.
Is there any way to format to FAT32 using any application on an Android device?
I'm running PACMan at the moment, which seems to have the most features.
I have no hardware that can read my SD card on a PC at the moment.
I'm currently at work and don't feel like waiting 8 hours to do it at home, plus, there some compatibility issues formatting FAT32 on Windows 8
Hey guys, first post on xda!
Today I rooted my phone for the first time ever (got my note II for 3 weeks now) and I though it'd be cool to install a custom rom. I went for Slimbean 4.2.2 .
I installed slimbean and slim gapps and everything is working fine, except that it doesnt recognize my external sd card. In the system settings the option to mount it is grey, and the file manager doesnt detect it either. However when I boot into clockwork mod recovery then I can see the ext sd and install stuff from it (I installed slimbeans and slim gapps from here). There was one time where for an unknown reason it did give me the option to mount my ext. sd card but when I clicked it it said that it was damaged and had to be formatted. Ofcourse I sad no because the ext sd card has all my titaniumbackups on it... Also when I plug my gn2 in my pc I don't get to see the ext sd card either, only the phone's storage.
How can I fix slimbeans not seeing my ext sd card and make it auto mount on startup?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Try reformatting it using gparted.
-Back all the files up onto your PC
-Download and burn gparted live CD
-Boot into gparted, right click on sd, click delete, then right click and choose new, and format it as fat32

I found out the problem was the sd card being formatted as exFAT. Formatted it to FAT32 with a tool and it works now!
I have an LG H815 and a SD Kingston SDCA3 64GB UHS-I U3 formatted ExFat and used as external sd card (the normal way). Everything worked perfectly until I updated some month ago the kernel (Imperium Kernel for stock rom). After the update the phone shows me a message "SD card damaged, Tap to repair" and the only thing that I can do is to tap on the message and reinitialize the card. But doing it doesn't fix the problem. Also formatting the card with computer doesn't fix it.
The only thing I could do was to revert back to previous kernel.
Then I updated the ROM (from Genisys rom to the new Imperium 2.0 Rom) that comes already with the new version of the Imperium kernel that was giveing SD problem to me. But All worked great and I haven't any SD error!!!
Now that a new Imperium Kernel (version 3.1) was released I have installed it, wiped dalvick/cache and the SD error is come back.
So I tried another kernel like SimpleGX but I get the same error.
Reverting back to previous 3.0 version fix the issue.
Any ideas?
What I tried so far:
1- tap on the error message and format the card. The error appears again. No way.
2- format the card in ExFAT with a computer. No way.
3- delete with a computer any partition and let the phone format the card: it formats the card, but as soon as it finishes, the error message appears. So, no way.
4- delete every partition with a pc and create a little 4GB partition in FAT. The card works in the phone!!! But it has only 4gb... No way.
5- delete every partition with a pc and create a Ext4 partition, but the phone and my pc then can read it only with some tweak. No way.
6- format the card in FAT32, the phone can read the card, but I can't create file larger than 4GB due to FAT32 limit.
Please try fsck.exfat on the sdcard when this failure happens.
If you're familiar with adb use it or otherwise install a terminal app instead.
If you need instructions on how-to use fsck.exfat let me know.
Hi, I use sd card as external storage and it is formatted ExFat
Please see my updated answer above
Hello,
I got the same issue with H815...
Please let me know how to use fsck.exfat on the sd card (prefereably with adb)
I use my Sd card as external storage, and got the issue when flashing Simple gx kernel...
Thanks !
