So i have read many post and i mean many and i am still working my brain on catching on to all these. If you all notice, there is a lot to rooting, what you can do, names to things, so so much my brain hurts lol.
But, finally after almost 2 years of being here, 3 phones i grabbed my cojones and rooted my SG2 while still stock. So here are some things. I was going nuts to get Nandroid backup, come to find out that is just a normal back up while in recovery mode.
Now i was trying to do some things with Titanium Backup but got a bit confused. I noticed that with the lite version, I can only uninstall apps not freeze. I want to clean my phone from all the clogs, especially when i notice my memory use shows most of the time 550m-769m, which i have to keep cleaning it. Hoping, removing some apps will help this. What is the difference between freezing and uninstalling. Also, i came across:

Which it suppose to tell me which i can which i cant. Does this still apply with ICS? And looking at the list, all greens are good, correct?
Also, using root explorer is kinda weird. I was trying to install S Voice which it seems to be a big pain. For one, i have the package in a folder. When searching for it with Root Explorer, and i find S Voice, try to change permission it wont let me. Telling me the following, "Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
Also, trying to copy something into my system/app wont let me either.
What am i doing wrong? or missing?

I know the difference from freezing and uninstalling is that freezing halts the app from running and removes it from your app list. If you are uninstalling something you think is bloat, back it up first, in case it screws things up you can restore it. Freeze is a good way to test whether or not you want to just simply uninstall it.
Titanium Backup Pro is totally worth the few bucks though if you can afford it.. a real good buy..
As far as the other stuff, I don't mess with system/app things so maybe someone else can help with that.
For the green-coloured apps, I would make sure I have an alternate app that can take care of that feature of the phone. For example you can remove the camera app, but without a replacement/alternate app your phone won't have a camera function.
TBP is the perfect app to test whether an app is good to remove. Just freeze it and see if your phone acts up. My understanding is that freezing=not letting an app run, uninstalling=getting rid of it.
In terms of not having the permission to copy files in the system directories, you may need to install a terminal emulator to change the permissions and do the copying manually.
Thank you guys and sorry for the very late reply. Using TBP i was able to FREEZE many apps, decided to go this route, i was and still am abit afraid of damaging something and not being able to go back and fix it.
However, i still have a few situations. Even freeze so many apps my battery still dies very fax with little use i give the phone. I also see the following apps under my memory usage and i do not know what they are and if they can be froze too to even get more memory back.

for s voice there is flashable zip in that thread. Its garbage compared to siri in my opinion.
Another question, i come to noticed that my phone after root, whenever i shutdown or restart it will just hang on the goodbye picture. Is there a fix to this?

now im on stock, this will not damage any of my stock roms or anything within it, correct?

Atmazzz i want to say thank you. Doing what you said helped my hang. I do not have that problem anymore. But i am wondering if fixing the permission could have be the cause i lost S Voice talkback feature. What i mean, is that after doing the wipe cache/dalvik and fixing permissiong, now my S Voice does not talk back to me. No matter how many time i restart the phone or whatever i do, it wont talk anymore.
On another note, thanks to you, i have come to understand more about all the rooting. All i have to do now is soon gets some strength and install a new rom than stock. But there are so many, i do not know which one to use. Especially with the official ICS i bet they are better now.
I just also hope that neither of the rom come with the bricking problem. As far as i read it only happens when using ICS kernel and my phone is 0X12 so i get worry.
Hey guys, I have been a regular reader of your forums now for a few months. I am still learning so forgive me if I come off as lazy and unwilling to learn, or flat out dumb.
I sometimes get bored and search the web for ways to improve my tablet. I started by rooting and getting custom recovery, xposed, and various root apps just trying to improve performance or learn a bit more. Recently I had come across a list of which system apps are safe to remove. I backed up system apk and odex files and started deleting. My SD card was taken by my sister and she wiped it so she could put music on it. I don't have any real issues with how my tablet is running, but I can no longer open the Memo app without it crashing immediately. From what I have read, I believe my Touchwiz was deleted (if that is possible?) I did also delete my Prepaid installer.apk
Basically, I want to know if what I said makes sense to why Memo keeps crashing; is there perhaps a way to just download any system apps and put their respective APK's back to the system/app folder (or perhaps all I need is the Prepaid installer.apk?);and a little off topic, but how do I make the device status to Official rather than custom and should I even bother with anything OTA for updates.

This is a theoretically long work around, since I was going to give it to you only to realise I no longer have it either xD.......I suppose if you can get a hold of a new sd card, look into Titanium Backup, its a pretty useful app but it requires root permissions. Then if you can find the stock rom for your tab, there should be one somewhere in the development forums for 7", you can flash the stock and root again and install titanium, then backup the memo app to the sd card. Then restore your previous ROM state and install titanium again, switch the folder options to the path where the backup is on the sd card and restore it to that ROM.
As for TouchWiz...I think that's the OS GUI so it's most likely still there if you're using the tab. Not too sure about the prepaid ap though, but if it came with the stock then the above process should work as well.
I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 with Wind Mobile. Recently Updated to 4.4.2 and rooted with Towel Root. Everything was good until TitaniumBu couldn't access the externalSD card.
I tried using a couple of xposed modules (Handle External Storage & then KitKat SD Card Full Access), but they didn't allow Titanium to access the SD card either.
So I tried the manual method of modifying platform.xml (also changed permissions on the modified file) but I have the same issue as some other people I've read about (bluetooth stopped working, whatsapp crashed, maps, youtube, play store, titanium backup, touchpal keyboard, web browsing all stopped working). Also when I connect my phone to my PC, the phone and the sd are shown as empty.
I tried copying back the original platform.xml that I had saved and still no luck.
I'm not worried about the titanium accessing the sd card right now. I'm just trying to get the apps and bluetooth working. Anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks for the info Doc, but I'm not too confident flashing kernels (never done it) so I ended up wiping everything and starting from scratch. I installed? kitkat 4.2.2 and then rooted again with towelroot.
I then installed SD fix and TWRP, but the funny thing is that when I restarted my phone, I no longer had wifi.I tried a few things that I found in XDA and on other websites, but I couldn't get wifi back.
So then I redid everything again. Kit Kit & towel root, but no TWRP, no external sd fixes, and I am able to use my phone. The problem for me is that my apps have no access to the extSD and I can't do a back up without that access. I'm thinking that the extsd fixes that i have tried over the last few days mess something up with my phone. Or maybe towel root & the fixes are not good together? Maybe I should have used Root 66 like I used before?
I don't want to risk messing anything up right now, so I'm just going to wait around, and see if anyone else runs into my problems.

Towelroot, or any other root method shouldn't have any effect on the actual operation of the device. What is happening is there are new seLinux security enhancements built in to kk. Apps can now only read/write to folders they create/own. If another app created the folder, or if it was created by the owning app before the new security was implemented, seLinux will not allow that app to use it. More and more people are having problems even after the platform.xml edit which makes me believe its got to be done before flashing, or a factory reset may be needed. Im not sure on that right now.
The platform.xml edit is only for the external sdcard btw. You have to disable seLinux to solve this on the internal one. (Looks like this may also be true for external now, but like I said, im not sure about that yet)
There's an app in the store, I think its called sdfix, or sdfixer or something similar (search seLinux mode changer) that people have had some success with, so try that first.
Alternatively, I can mod the stock kernel to disable seLinux there. (May do this today anyway).
It's perfectly fine if you're not comfortable flashing kernels, but its really nothing to be too worried over. A custom one like ktoonsez kt747, will flash and run normally, and you have the option to learn more if you like so you can configure it how you want.
If you have any specific concerns about it, feel free to ask us. But in the end its up to you if you still want to refrain from flashing one.

I tried sdfix and thats when my wifi got messed up.
I've spent 2 days getting my phone almost back to where it was before, so I think I'll wait a few days/weeks before I mess with it again.

FYI Doc. I tried the updated KitKat SD Card Full Access (version 1.2) Xposed module that came out today. It worked, and now Titanium can back up to my external SD card. Finally.

No worries. I browse XDA a lot, and I see your answers, and they're always helpful. I appreciate all your help.
So im new to all this. My last "smart" phone was pretty basic and couldnt do much. I went through the root process thinking I would like it, but so far it seems like I wasted my time. I thought I would be able to uninstall useless apps and install apps right to the SD card. So far neither have worked. I was wondering if anyone could help and explain in plain simple english what I may be doing wrong or is this phone basically useless to root and just have to live with it as is? I tried titanium backup - all that did was take up almost all my remaining phone space, change my keyboard and switch my wallpaper back to default. I tried System app remover to remove unwanted bloatware - no change. I tried ROM toolbox lite to install apps to SD, I checked that box in the app for it to do this- downloaded an app to see if it worked and nope. So any suggestions on anything useful root does for this phone? So far it seems like i wasted my time on this.

Heya Andy, welcome. you have a great phone there, and It just needs a little patience.
-you can remove any unwanted system app using whatever Root Explorer/manager you Wish, including ES file explorer!
-you can install/move apps to SD. the best way to do that would be Link2SD. you'll need to look around and read to get acquainted with it, but it's a great little app and it will let you install hundreds of apps, all on SD.
-to make the best use of your Root, you should install this or something similar.
-One of the best things you can do with root, is to install Xposed framework and use modules to customize your phone. some of my favorites are: Sense6 Toolbox, App Ops, Network speed indicator, Xsense, Bootmanager,,,. they give you great control on many aspects of the phone and add some very useful functionality.

I hope this is the right to post.
I am at the point of throwing my SM-T800 in the bin. This Samsung bloatware is getting beyond a joke.
I have been toying with the idea of putting a custom ROM on it just so that I can get rid of all this Samsung crap.
Do I need to go that far or can I just put a rootkit on the tablet or maybe there is some other way to achieve my goal.
At the moment I’m just looking for ideas. Anything that could help would be appreciated.

I haven't had much of problem with this. One way to get rid of Samsung bloatware, is to go into settings > applications. Go through the list of every app. If you have no use for it, then delete it. If there is no delete option, like with flipboard or "internet", then disable it. This will stop all of its apps services and also will uninstall all of this apps' updates from the storage. Of course, the tablet will not become exactly "fast" after this because Exynos 5 Octa 5420 was a modest SoC, specially when coupled with the QHD screen. However, freeing up some space will be appreciated on the 16GB storage models.
PS: if there is no delete or disable option, click on the storage and at least delete cache and data. At least this will free some storage.

Hi Akopps
I think I may have not made my goal clear.
My aim is to get rid of any unnecessary Samsung software for no other reason than not having them tell me what I can and cannot do with my device. I have owned it for more than 3 years now and it is well out of warranty. I am happy with the performance. It meet my needs. Disabling their software and removing latest updates just seems a bit futile. Samsungs' "Kids Mode" app just updates itself and then wants to take control of what you see. I'm in my early sixties, no young children or grandchildren and with no need for "Nanny" Samsung to tell me what to do.
I just want to get rid of there "preloaded" software. After all, I own the device, why shouldn't I be able to remove the software?

I'd prefer something like system app remover or BK package disabler in case something is inadvertently removed that causes an issue. It can easily be restored.

do you have a personal safe-to-remove apps list?
I've tryed following the ones already discussed in this forum section aswell as others but I've encountered some freezes/reboots. (For example by removing BBCAgent , BeaconManager and Context Service).

You need to flash superSU with twrp or odin I guess.

Tonyspo is mostly correct. Flash TWRP using odin, boot into TWRP, flash superSU. However, if you're only goal is to remove preloaded apps, I'd suggest taking ashyx's advice and just install BL package disabler from the app store. I use that on my Galaxy S7 and it works great.
I've tried odin, but in download Mode all of my PC's won't recognize the tablet. When booted everything is fine (but than I can't flash)
I've read its because Samsung removed the Option in the Rom to get root rights.
I've also tried Heimdall and I only get error msgs.

I guessing you're actually in recovery mode not download mode if the tablet is recognised when booted to the os.
It says it is the Download Mode

In that case what makes you think your device isn't detected in download mode?
