Hello guys,
The reason I ask this question is because when I was trying to root my phone I was using a micro usb cable that I bought off of newegg and it only charged my phone.. I had to switch to the usb cable that came with the phone to actually let windows detect my phone.
The cable you bought was most likely a pin-shorted one that enables "fast charging". Any standard USB cable will work with the device. If you want a spare, get a BlackBerry OEM cable. For some reason, they're quite high-quality.
e: My old one's quite worn out. Just bought a new one.

But the weird thing is the cable works for my LG G2X. It doesn't work for my S4.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/6ft-Samsung.../140944620745?ssPageName=ADME:L:eek:C:US:3160
I ordered that cable and it came today... Plugged it in to my phone and it didn't detect it. It only charges.
Any of you other guys have that problem? I'm going to try the blackberry one that k0nane suggested.
I tried a blackberry cable at work and it didn't detect my phone. Went to my car and got my Nexus 7 cable and it worked fine for detecting phone + rooting. My HTC and 5 foot long generic cable has worked fine.
Connect directly to computer if you are currently connecting through a hub?
Yeah I've tried connecting through the back of the computer and it's a no go. Anyone else have any ideas? I just bought the blackberry cable and I hope it works.
I got my BB cable today, and while I can confirm that it works normally, it's a disappointment. Certainly nothing like the cables of old. If you need a cheap one, you're probably still better off with it, but the legend it ain't.

Sweet. Hopefully it'll work for me too. I'll keep you posted.

Fellas,
I didnt expect such poor quality from HTC. Just few months of standard use and my TP2 data cable is already fraying! To worsen the experience, T-mo is unwilling to replace it under warranty and recommends buying a new one from their website. HTC on the other end, is not answering their customer care no.
Such a disappointment! Any suggestions as to where cud i buy this cable for a more decent price than at t-mo website?
I have...like a billion of these cables.

It's just a standard mini-USB cable. You can get them pretty much anywhere. Look through what you have. If you have purchased any amount of electronics, there is a good chance you already have another.
Wow ok Mr. Ninja put down the nunchucks! Its just a normal cable.
Thanks for your responses!
I found a working mini USB cable from my external hard drive and its working fine with the TP2. I didnt realize it cud work, i guess because this cable and the TP2 mini USB have different looking pins (TP2 cable has that weird asymmetry at its end). Anyhow, its working...so cool!
This post reminds me of the Chris Farley Ninja movie.. All it needs is the theme song playing..

You are not alone, and I am a pro at this stuff. In fact, mostly everyone at first glance looking at it wouldn't think they are the same. I just tried it for the sake of trying, because of the Diamond-esque look to it, I expected it to not work. But, it did!
I dunno..I have two of the regular mini usb cables for some external hard drives, and from a tmobile shadow/dash and while they work to charge the phone, they wont work for activesync...as soon as I put in the supplied cable activesync pops up...

Really? I am using an old USB right now just fine with ASync...
I just bought a ReTrak MicroUSB retractable cable for power and sync. Power works fine, but my pc(s) will not detect it as a device, doesn't even think about it.
Anyone else used it with a Captivate? Their site says it should do sync, but maybe that's not directed directly at the Captivate.
I just heard back from ReTrak Support, according to them they had a bad batch get shipped that will charge but not sync. They are sending out a replacement for me today.
Just incase people are actually reading this. So I received the new cable from ReTrak, and, well, the same thing. Charge but no data. I informed my contact that maybe they don't work with the Rogers variant of the Captivate. Now they are over nighting me a new cable, different model to try/test. I was ready to let it go and just live with carrying an extra data cable (I really like the "retrak" feature of their cables), but will try this new model and see what happens.
Interestingly enough, I had this same problem, but not with ReTrak. It was one of the crappy retractable units, though. I noticed I actually had power problems with it too. When the phone said it was charged to 100%, and I unplugged the cable, it would drop 10-20% on the battery indicator immediatly. Thought I had all sorts of rom problems, did tons of time reflashing ....
... and then I replaced the cable. Everything worked peachy after that. If you're having charging problems, this is likely the culprit as well.
No charging problems for me, just no data.

So I received the ETCABLEMICRO5 and it works just fine with my Captivate. It is a different cable then what is in the ETCHG41MO2 4-in-1 package (12VDC/120VAC dual USB outlet with retrak cable). So, until/if they change packaging, buyer beware. The ETCHG41MO2 will not do data sync with the Captivate, it needs to be a ETCABLEMICRO5.
Does the ETCABLEMICRO5 charge in high-speed mode, or just at the standard 500mA USB rate?
Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Battery Status will tell you if the phone thinks it's connected to a charger or a standard USB port.

It says "Charging (USB)".
I don't have my wall charger here at work to compare what it says when plugged in, should have done that yesterday.
I have the ReTrak cable, and it works perfectly for me. I've got the AT&T Captivate, so maybe there's just enough variation where it doesn't work right?

Ok, if I remember correctly, that just means that it's charging at the 500mA rate.
Not quite what I'm looking for then.

This is not a problem with the Captivate, but a problem with the cable. I bought a ReTrak car charging unit for my HTC Droid Incredible, and initially, the data Xfer worked fine, but now it does not. My cable at home works without a hitch. Looks like this is just shoddy craftsmanship by the company.
Note: Charging feature works fine, which is why I purchased it in the first place.

Send in a ticket to their support, they are prompt and very nice. I'm sure they'll replace it for you (and let you keep the old one).
Hey guys, I have a question regarding your Samsun GNex charging cable. I woke up this morning after plugging my phone in last night to find that it was at 20% battery and the cable was not being recognized. After I jiggle the charger, the phone occasionally and fleetingly recognizes the cable but quickly loses the contact. When I tried to charge the phone with a different cable (my Kindle Fire charger), it worked without any issue.
Has anyone experienced similar failures of their cable in this manner? It worked the night before without any issue but now it is giving me problems. The cable is not visibly damaged, and I am careful with my devices/accessories so I do not believe that the problem is from my carelessness.
Finally, I got this phone from the Verizon store, would I take the cable to them or to Samsung to get it replaced? I hesitate to go to VZW because I don't want them to see that my phone is rooted (in case they ask to plug it in in front of them).
Thanks!
Yes I have the same problem I don't know if its just that they (Samsung) shipped out the wrong charger cables or what but I Use my Brothers cord for his Droid 3 and it works flawlessly snug and all..

Yeah, it worked fine until today, so I don't know if it was because they sent the wrong cord. Oh well, I will get in touch with Samsung about it.

My original cable has not suddenly started working again. it now charges and transfers files which is good because my Chinese knockoff cable had a loose fit on my phone.

Same problem here. I bought my phone around Dec 21st and just 2 weeks ago the original cable refuses to charge the phone. It also didn't allow me to transfer files to my phone. I currently have 2 new cables. One cable is from www.monoprice.com and one is from www.cellphoneshop.net (China). Both of the "backup" cables work fine as well as one of them being 8 feet long. (makes it that much easier to plug in at the library sometimes.)
FYI - my original Droid Eris cable crapped out after about 4 months so it does not surprise me. What I would like is a good backup wallwart to use at my office. The phone charges so much faster with the ac adapter.
Solid USB cables are cheap (also recommend monoprice.com) so its not a huge deal, but wish they'd last longer.
Mine's still going strong at this point.
I'm still using my Blackberry cable.
I love monoprice, why spend 150 on HDMI when you can get it for 5. I got in touch with Samsung and after some discussion they had me send my old one in (they paid for shipping) and they will send a new one. I was a bit annoyed that I had to send the old one since it was a hassle, but oh well.

and NEITHER one worked with my Gnex!! It wouldn't sync, charge or anything.
Is there ANY way to get a STOCK USB for the Gnex? (the one that came with the phone, http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SCH-I515MSAVZW-accessories last item on the 2nd page)
Also had problems with other micro USB chargers.....a lot seem to have some sork of short in theme.....lose power when I move the phone around....how hard is it to find a working cable? Anyone with similar issues?
I have various cheap eBay micro usb cables and OEM ones and they all work. Perhaps take a look at your gnex micro USB port? Maybe a piece of dust is in there. Or the contacts are screwed. Its probably more complicated than that, but it doesn't hurt to check. GL
I'm using USB cables I got for very cheap and they all worked so far...can you try the cables with another phone?
Hmm well I can try when I get home. My Droid 2 was the same way! only the stock USB would work and a few aftermarket micro USBs wouldnt work! And you guessed it, my Droid 2 USB worked fine with my GNex :S

They look like the one that comes with that charger, though. Very odd.
I have always had the best luck with the oem motorola micro usb cables. Well made and never a charging or pc connectivity issue and you can usually find them cheap on Amazon.
I have one cable that plugged into PC or into my AC jack gives me just AC, no data connection.
My other usb cable charges but no AC and gives data.
I bought this charger + cable combo.
They are the same models that come with the phone. They work flawlessly.
The kit was a little cheaper back then, but definitely beats having to order random cables till one of them works.

Ditto! works like a charm.
Most of my micro USB cables work, but this one that came with an LG Optimus One (and worked on my Nexus One, HTC Panache, Nook Color) does not register in my GNex. Not sure why - maybe something about the shape of the port or the depth.

Bought mine from seller Yellow deals using the same links posted in this thread. The charger itself works, but the U4 micro USB cable does not for both charging and data transfer. Bummer.
My dad has an Optimus V and I have a Galaxy Nexus. His cord won't charge my Nexus and my cord won't charge his phone.
I wasn't sure why it was this way.
I've tried all kinds of LG chargers and LG usb cables, and none of them work.

I'm almost sure that you manage to damage your USB port, just like I did. It won't do anything but charge AC only through pc and nothing more, no matter what cable I use.
I'm just waiting for my replacement part arive from Hong Kong. 1,5 month already and no word of it. I guess it take that much time anyway.

That'd be tragic. I dont think thats the case because GNex #1, GNex #2 and Droid 2 all had the same issue (certain cords short out, stock ones do not) So I am leaning towards manufactures quality....Just ordered 2 different cheap ones from ebay....waiting....
Definitively a damaged port. I bought a port from Hong-Kong as well, and it took 6 weeks to ship!!
After replacing it the phone charges with all my cables though.

They both work great
I was wondering if anyone has bought a longer USB cable, the one that came with the AT&T Ion is too short and the phone has to be on the floor while charging.
A cable might seem like something so basic that any cable with the right connectors should work, but apparently not. The Kindle has the same type of port and the Ion and yet the Kindle cable doesn't charge the ion (when used with the Ion power adapter, of course). So if you've found a long USB cable that works, please post it here.
I think I saw one in a Japanese store the other day that was circum $5 for a 6 ft cable, and I'm gonna go buy it tomorrow. I'll report back if it works or not.

I don't think any cable will work. Just to be sure, I tried the Kindle cable with the Ion adapter again, and it also didn't work. That cable connects to the computer fine, and the charge seemed stable, but when used with the wall plug it wasn't charging steadily although the LED light on the phone was on all the time.

The problem with some micro-usb cable like the one I bought from Wal-Mart is that they do not have an extra line that allows for data connections to computers and that extra power is what keeps the phone charging stable.

I got a mediabridge 6 ft cable from Amazon, it wasn't as cheap as some of the others posted here (I ordered before that post). Tried it during the weekend and it worked perfectly, so something must be missing from the Kindle cable.
I just recently went to Kyoto, and accidentally left my charger in the hotel (usual pretty careful, but eh). So I just went to the nearest tech shop and bought a nice 1.5 meter cable, and it's so much nicer. Kinda makes me glad I left the damn charger.

Any micro usb will work now the only difference is that the ones that say "file transfer" are for transfer and charging, the ones for "charging" are for charging only i made the mistake of trying to get the one from my truck to transfer data.. didnt happen lol had to wait till i got to my house and use the right cable. may be my luck, would like to see if there is a true difference

Also, anybody know if the ION will support an OTG cable?
from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Its been touched on, but just in case. The Ion uses a micro USB connection, that is the socket on the phone itself. There are lots of connections that look like micro USB, but aren't...obviously those won't work, as they don't fit. So when buying a longer cable, make sure its Micro USB (not Mini USB, by they way...that too is different)
Also, as mentioned, some older cables..especially those that came with some older cell phones, would be power only...no data transfer ability (AT&T loved including these with older Samsung phones, as they wanted you to buy a $30 data cable before leaving the store). They'll charge the phone from a wall or a computer, but with hit or miss results..some will confuse the phone, as it doesn't know what type of connection it has, others will charge very slow, etc. there is no reason anymore to buy a power only cable, especially considering all these cables are cheap. I lucked out, my logitech mouse came with a 6 foot micro USB data cable for adjusting its button configuration and charging...so i just use that with the wall mount, works great.
I ordered a bunch of USB extension cables from eBay, my cable is like 14 feet long now lol they are cheap
