If you use a launcher other than stock, the best is to use it in combination with an AOSP GB rom, if it's compatible. For example, download a MildWild rom, install it, install your launcher, and uninstall the stock launcher. That's what I did with MildWild Redux. I replaced the stock launcher with ADW launcher, and it was blazing fast.

different launchers are used mainly to customise the interface rather than save battery. some will naturally use more battery than others, but you'll have to test them to see if there are any major differences.
go for a lightweight launcher (without fancy animations or many customisation options etc) if you really want to save battery by doing this. how you use the launcher is also critical, lots of heavy widgets will likely slow the system down and use more resources for instance. if you set it up for how you use the phone you can access everything quickly with minimal effort like app shortcuts and folders, then it requires less touches and guess you can save some battery...
the launchers only control the immediate home screen interface, so they shouldn't really affect background processes and apps as far as i know.

Hi all.
I've tried a few ROMS, each having a different launcher thrown in the mix for me to try: Stock has Blur Launcher, CM7 uses ADW, MIUI uses some weird IOS crazy, and WajkIUI uses Launcher Pro.
Personally, when I used the stock ROM, I had Go Launcher installed, but use the others on the custom ROMS.
Is there any benefit, speed/performance etc in using the launcher built in to the ROM, compared to installing one from the market and using that?
You should use the launcher that suits your needs and you like the most. For example I'm on MIUI, but I prefer ADW Launcher EX over the MIUI one.

true, but my question isn't should I use the one in the ROM because it's better than others - but simply from a performance aspect of the phone, would a launcher built in to the ROM run better/faster than one installed separately.
I think it doesn't really matter. A good launcher will run smoothly on your phone, plus you should like it. If you are looking for performance you should look for a light launcher. In CM7 they've decided to put ADW because it's pretty similar to AOSP and it's quite light. On the other hand you can look at the MIUI default launcher which is laggy IMO and that's why I've installed ADW, besides the lack of the app drawer.
If a launcher came as stock in one ROM it doesn't necessarily mean that it's the fastest/best. Moreover the vast majority of the "built in" launchers is represented by similar apps, if not identical, to those that can be installed from market, so it's a matter of taste.
Hi all,
For those OneX owner, you are using HTC Sense or other launcher?
I tried to install Go Launcher, but there is a ... menu at the bottom, so it is out.
Then I try Apex launcher, it is nice but not very user friendly yet, I try to configure it today and see if it can replace Sense.
Both alternative launchers consume lesser memory at startup (6xx vs 7xx in Sense), HTH.
Have you tried nova?

One of the things that concern me with third party launchers is that it may bring additional ram resources into play since sense cannot be disabled?
It would be worse if we have sense eating all that memory in the background AND another launcher eating its needed ram as well?
Or am i wrong in thinking this?

I think so. When I installed Nova Launcher and used that as my launcher, it would still show that the phone was using 800mb or so of ram, which is exactly what Sense uses.
I use ssLauncher (paid version) and really love it.
Don't know much about memory consumption, sadly!
I'm using Apex launcher. Gives me much more options do modify than the Sense launcher. And it doesn't have the 3-dot black bar.
Using it for a few days now, and it looks good.

The problem is that you can't use the HTC widgets and I really want that combined email inbox!
I'm using Apex. After being on stock ICS on my old Nexus S I didn't like Sense at all and can't understand why, given our screens are getting bigger and bigger, why manufacturers keep on making skins that stick to the 4x4 homescreen grid and waste so much space! Apex, plus APW for widgets is doing me proud
I was using ADW EX on my old desire, when I got the One X i put on Go Launcher and like it a lot (especially the excellent widgets and apps it comes with as optional elements)
I'm contacting the dev to ask to remove the ..., aside from that, it's an excellent launcher with loads of settings, themes and extras
I'm in the same boat as you- those "..." are killing me.

Try Apex, no ...
I tried Apex, but without root (for now) to let me add widgets to the home screen it's not much use to me at the moment.
hello, just wondering if having multiple launchers with apps / widgets etc will drain battery or slow phone down? if i am in one launcher and using wifi, then go to another launcher without switching wifi off will it still be running in background somewhere??
Multiple launchers can cause phone slowdown and in turn, use more battery. Why do you need multiple launchers? If you don't like sense flash a new ROM and be done with sense crap

not too sure, i am on a cyanogen nightly, and facied having different home screens, without having to change the theme or rom and then set my settings up. i think cyanogen has adw or something, then go launcher is supposed to be great and holo launcher offered something else (this is going from the descriptions... i have downlaoded them, but not configured yet as thought would ask the above question first...
I've used Holo launcher beforw and I think its pretty good, decent customization options & not resource heavy. Never used Go Launcher before, so can't really comment. CM uses ADW which, personally, I believe is one of the best launchers out there (although I prefer Zeam; uses less battery power and is slightly quicker).

If you mean will wifi still be running, then yes, it should be. It should only switch off if you tell it to.
You can see some launchers on my site if you'd like to get some ideas of how they look.
I use MIUI roms which come with the MiHome Launcher, which is beautifully smooth. (I prefer the 3D Cube animation style.)
I also run Wave Launcher which is designed to run over the top of all other launchers or apps. I totally recommend it for any-screen-you-are-on, quick shortcut convenience.
I don't experience any slow down or battery drain.
Of course the more animations, and other moving eye candy you have, the more work the CPU has to do (CPU cycles). The more work the CPU has to do - the more it uses the battery.
The same applies to live wallpaper, GPS, watching video, keeping the screen on, etc.
The reason I'm asking is that I've tried this phone in the store as well as watched the video reviews and yes, the UI is really, really fast and smooth.
I'm curious if anyone has installed a 3rd party Launcher, like Nova or something without being rooted and noticed how the speed is after they did that?
Just try any, non of them require root l. I think your phone will handle them perfectly
Sent from my HTC One X
It depends on the settings you use, but I am using nova and it is very fast and very smooth. The only reason I am using it instead of stock is so I can double press the home key and have the notification bar drop down. Saves me having to try to reach for it all the time
I use Go Launcher Ex with most of the bells and whistles enabled, and it's buttery smooth on stock 4.0.4, stock 4.1.2, and CM 10.1 (4.2.1).
Switched to Go to get more than 4 columns of icons, nicer icons, nicer themes, nicer animations.
I use holo launcher and its just as smooth as the stock ics launcher.

I'm using Nova on the AOSP Rom and it is extremely fast.
Nova Launcher on stock 4.1.2 ROM, smooth, fast, and responsive.
i sry to maybe hijack ur thread omnius1, but i also got some questions about launchers.
i got my E975 some days ago and i am thinking about trying another launcher than LG's own, but how to u set it them up and how to disable the stock one and which have the best options for modding the hell out of the homescreen?

Most launchers will allow you a degree pf modding the homescreen but it depends what you wish to do..
If youre looking to change stuff like fonts then the launcher wont allow this at least I havent seen it, however you can change animations, the dock, folders, icons and general theme..
I currently use a combo of apex launcher (which works with some of the existing stock widgets, unlike adw launcher for instance) and rom toolbox pro which allows for a whole bunch of customization such as boot screens, font, et
Oh and I should also mention that the speed amd performance overall using apex launcher is every bit as fast as stock if not a bit faster.
I am rooted too fyi.
I am really liking Sense 6 a lot. Typically I always use Nova Prime launcher, but something about this One M8 and Sense 6 seems nearly perfect just as is.
But I am on a custom ROM, that allows some tweaks, as well as Sense 6 Toolbox + xposed framework for more customization, while all keeping the default Sense launcher.
Anyways, I have a few different apps installed like Textra, but I don't like that icon, would like to keep the Sense 6 messaging icon. How do I change the icon back to default without using Nova launcher ?

Thanks, I installed icon changer, and that did the job.
But one thing I hate about installing so many different apps, I don't want any wake locks or issues, due to an app running secretly in the background. Is this a safe app ? I put it in Greenify to sleep just in case.
