[Q] Help Please - Unable to complete encryption - Error after PIT update - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Been a while since I toyed with Android and things have moved on. Just received a Samsung Galaxy Note II 'Demo Unit' from eBay. Was surprised to see it had Android Revolution HD 14.0 installed on it, anyway I upgraded it to 15.0 and it was all working fine.
Next I wanted to 'fix' the issue where the demo unit only shows 5.52gb of internal memory as there was only about 500mb left after installing the ROM (CWM taking up about 2gb for a backup). I learned this was due to the portioning and hence I needed to update the PIT file, so I found a PIT file on the forum for a 16GB 7100 and tried to use ODIN to copy this over. All I did was connect the Note via USB (showed up as Port 0), selected the downloaded PIT file and clicked Start. All seemed to work as far as I could tell:
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/004> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/004> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/004> RQT_CLOSE !!
<ID:0/004> RES OK !!
However now when I turn the unit on, it goes through the Samsung splash screen then goes to a screen saying Encryption Failed - unable to complete encryption due to interruption. Perform factory data reset (erasing all your data) before use. After resetting, try encrypting device again.
So I click on Reset Device, it goes off an you see the Android icon with the spinny blue thing, restarts but the same issue. It is stuck in a loop.
Have tried booting to the CWM menu and I can't do a restore, says it can't mount /sdcard
Have re-installed the ROM from the external SD Card, that seemed to work fine...until it came time to reboot, when it went back to the error above.
Can also reboot to the download function.
Can anyone help?
Am assuming the PIT file was either wrong or corrupt or didn't write correctly which has screwed up the internal SD card. Am trying to find a new copy of the PIT file to copy. Any advice welcomed, including how best to copy the PIT file to the device, is ODIN the best option, did I do something wrong?

PIT File contained the below, have a made a rookie error - do you have to update the PIT file and copy a ROM at the same time?

Can you post the output of this command?
Code:
ls -lR /dev/block
Ok found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34302258&postcount=21
so this shell cmds gave me a 501 MB file which is probably the NAND dump :
adb shell
su
stop
dd if=/dev/block/bml0!c of=/sdcard/bml0c.outfile
## wait 2 minutes to finish
start

does seem to know oneNAND partns either
parted just can handle the sd card on SGY
Wow its not noob stuff
I wanna know how if we change partition size maybe we can got extra size for /data maybe
ya itz poss with PIT FILE MAGIC see above
look up the tags.
but which parted (editor) is working on on our SGY'S "oneNAND" and which partition manager ?

Run both parted (linux version and ARM version with GPT support) on that raw file, if it doesn't contain a partition table the filesystem may be obtained somehow.

some individual partns filesystems can be obtained via magicISO, because RFS is FAT compatible.
still a nice oneNAND dump reader would be a nice thing.

ok but using parted on a single partition should always work if the filesystem is recognized

with that stuff one can implement "mobile ODIN" flasher for SGY-phone.
How about we hack gparted to accept PIT files as partition tables?

Just modify a kernel you like to boot off how ever much space you want for /data
hey, do you still have this file?

VZW Galaxy Nexus toro pit.img xloader.img and sbl.img

Guess this is just going to be a reference thread. I was trying to get OMAPFlash to work for the VZW Nexus - toro. What I found was sbl.img is the same on all devices but xloader is not.
Been trying to find an sbl.img for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus (plenty of links to the OMAPFlash and the GSM one.) Trying to unbrick a friend's phone for them. Would be relatively simple if I could get the img file.
Anyone have this, point me in the right direction or be willing to dd mmcblk0p2 to copy this to the sdcard?
Thanks,
Kevin
Disregard.
Opened bootloader.img from the Nexus factory image in HxD and blocks 0x081000 - 0x240FFF are the same as the sbl.img in OMAPFlasher.zip. Also, anyone looking for a toro .pit file to flash in Odin, this is found on blocks 00000000 - 00000FFF for xloader.img or 0023F000 - 0023FFFF for sbl.img (the pit is the same for both.)
Apparently there is something more going on with this thing that OMAPFlasher is not going to fix.
Have you taken a look here man? It has odin packages for various phones. Try your luck, hope it works out for you brother.

Re: VZW Galaxy Nexus sbl.img
Thanks, saw that one. Sorted out that the xloader.img and sbl.img are packaged IN bootloader.img last night. So is the .pit file which is identical to the gsm. It does not actually give you which block each partition starts so guessing gpt is different.
Where I am at now is that I can send the images to his gnex with OMAPFlash, just can't get it to reboot into download mode. Still black screen bricked so no idea if OMAPFlash even has the right xloader for toro or if this is just a bad emmc. Think my next step will be splitting out four different xloader.img files and try flashing.
Have you taken a look at Pit Magic, it can help you analyze .pit as well as maybe make changes to block size and maybe block count. I wish I could help/assist you further brother but I don't have access to a VZW GNex at the moment, the GF is at work with her VZW GNex till around 5pm and I just got off work at 5:30am, been up since yersterday at 4:30pm haha.
My brain is cooked! Still though, what are you able to accomplish with omapflash, if anything?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916936
Not much to this point.
The toro x-loader/MLO is DIFFERENT than the GSM one included in OMAPFlash. I extracted (four) x-loader/MLO from bootloader.img [Edit: working from bootloader-toro-primelc03.img] (128kb, see next post for blocks) and replaced MLO_4460_HS_PRO in the tuna project folder.
Both sbl.img (1792kb, blocks 00081000 - 00240FFF) and pit information (00000000 - 00000FFF) are the same as GSM so nothing required there to make OMAPFlash work for the VZW Gnex. This was a bad flash that bricked in the first place so wondering if maybe the IPL/mbr is screwed up? If it the mbr was still intact then it should go x-loader > sbl which would get me into download mode.
So far I have tried all combinations of MLO and sbl.
Semper Fi btw, was 6469. Working on this for another jarhead.
Looks like there are actually four x-loaders in the bootloader.img so guess I can try them separately.
Here is the block layout for bootloader-toro-primelc03.img
Code:
PIT = 00000000 - 00000FFF (Samsung .pit - toro/toroplus/maguro are all the same)
xloader.img = 00001000 - 00020FFF (?)
xloader.img = 00021000 - 00040FFF (?)
xloader.img = 00041000 - 00060FFF (GSM/32gb)
xloader.img = 00061000 - 00080FFF (CDMA/toro - confirmed)
sbl.img = 00081000 - 00240FFF (matches "tuna" board sbl.img in OMAPFlasher - toro/toroplus/maguro are all the same)
Tried all four (attached) and no go. Possible to compare what's on your gf's nexus to the attached and find out which one is ours? I believe one of the first two is the one we are looking for.

N7100 flash (stock) rom fails at modem, sboot,

Hi:
My Chinese N7100 won't boot into recovery mode, it stucks either on the Sumsung or the " Galaxy N7100 " logo . It was rooted and flashed with a HK stock rom, fews days ago in the morning, it seemed did an autoupdate, when I woke up, the phone is in a recovery mode. I reboot the phone, and it stucks on the Sumsung logo ever since. It can boot into odin download mode. I have tried to flash HK rom, chinese stock rom, but have no luck.
Here is what I have tried:
Odin rooted with CF-Auto root successfully and smoothly, and phone reboots, but stuck on the Sumsung screen
Odin flashed with CMW recovery successfully and smoothly, and phone reboots, but stuck on the Sumsung screen,
heimdall flashed with CMW recovery successfully and smoothly, and phone reboots, but stuck on the Sumsung screen.
Odin flash with Chinese/HK stock rom (always fail at modem.bin, sboot.bin)
heimdall flashed with Chinese/HK stock rom (always fail at modem.bin)

Why flashing stock rom(any other rom) fails?
Any help would be great appreciated.
And you're 100% sure you have a real n7100? A friend had similar problems with his SGS3 and it turned out it was a chinese fake.
Ensure you've killed ANY Kies process. Don't use USB frontpanel ports. Use the USB ports on the back of your pc.

Hi, I used the note2 n7100 for about a year now, there is no evidence showing it is not a N7100. I uninstalled Kies, and flashing using laptops, I guess all the USB ports should be the same(I have tried different ports/cables anyway).
But you need Kies for the drivers. Install kies again. Then, before you start odin, open Taskmanager and kill every process that has "kies" in its name. Now open odin, connect the device and wait for the drivers to install. Now choose the FW package and it should work.

I extracted prop.default from boot.img and thought I could share it if someone want some info from it.

I also did an analysis of the pit-file (diskmap.pit) Yes, it does have a pit-file just like samsung phones, cause of the exynos chipset I guess.

Flashing Stock Firmware without Odin or Heimdall

I am having some issues with flashing stock firmware to my Galaxy S9 the Model is a SM-G960F and I have been able to pull a version of the stock formware from the sammobile site. I can flash TWRP and then a custom OS however I need to update the current device to Android 10 Q for the OS I want. I use a Linux system and I have ADB and Fastboot installed and I have no issue sideloading or flashing firmware onto the device. However, the stock firmware comes with a number of .tar.md5 files that I am unsure how to use in order to flash the device back to stock in using Fastboot and ADB. If anyone can provide some assistance. I am running into a wall when it comes to completing this install from Linux
Any assistance is appriciated.
EDIT: Alternativley, If anyone can tell me how to install the Vendors on the S9 SM-G960F without stock update that should work as well.
TIA!
Hi, just went through the process of flashing stock on my S9 too. It was rather a pain in the a**.
First of all, you will not be able to flash full stock to a Samsung device (in download mode) using fastboot/adb, those don't work with Samsung devices.
In general fastboot is useless for Samsung.
You can just go ahead and extract all those .tar.md5 files with tar -xvf filename.tar.md5.
(Use CSC if you want to wipe data, otherwise HOME_CSC. Although I'm not totally sure in which cases you would have to wipe data manually anyway.)
There should be a vendor.img file somewhere, I think you can just flash this via TWRP by selecting Install > Install image > (choose vendor.img) > (select vendor as target partition).
That would be by far the easiest way.
But I have never tried this way! (At least, all that could possibly happen is a soft brick that can be fixed by going full stock.)
I don't get why you do not want to use heimdall in the first place, as the only way I'm aware of to flash via bootloader/download onto a Samsung device is heimdall or odin and heimdall is natively supported on Linux.
When you would use heimdall, after extracting the .tar.md5 files, you would find a .pit file somewhere, which shows a mapping of the extracted files to the partitions. You can view this mapping with heimdall --print-pit --file filename.pit.
After this, build your heimdall command like heimdall --BOOT boot.img --SYSTEM system.img ... for each of the extracted files. DO IT ALL IN ONE COMMAND!
Although the version of heimdall I tried to use had a problem. Aparently some versions of heimdall are unable to flash a system.img larger than 4GB.
So I had to overcome my pride and use Windows with Odin for the flashing. (Normally I use Arch btw )
Hope I could help you a bit on your quest with this little booklet.
Best Regards!
Hello,
Thank you very much for this exchange, because I am in a case very near from the Arcticstagmedia's description.
I'm on the same device SM-G960F, looking to flash a stock ROM on Android 10 (Q) before to install /e/ OS (Q) on it.
I did the :
Code:
heimdall print-pit --file STARLTE_EUR_OPEN.pit
It returned me :
Code:
Heimdall v1.4.2

And it failed.
I'm a very newbie on Heimdall and Android. I'm not at all a developer, I'm just wishing to learn a bit, to become step by step a more advanced user, and to be more aware of the stuff I'm using everyday.
I'm using NixOS, so I would like to avoid the Odin option. Only if the Heimdall variant fail despite your help, I'll have to do it with Odin through a VM.
Thanks again for this topic, and maybe it could help other people if I can then confirm I did it.
