So i got my Optimus G about 2 weeks ago and i love it. Upgraded from my old Evo 4g.
I decided i would go a bit and see how stock was, and it's pretty good honestly. I like some of the things LG added in, but the battery life is kinda....meh. I feel like i could definently get better battery with a different rom, but here is the problem : I am not too careful with phones. I would love to be but i always end up dropping them or something stupid to break it.
Now my question is, if i root it would it void my insurance at Best Buy? Could i just go back to stock or would they check?
It's pretty easy to revert back to full stock before you take it back if you need to.

Nope. It will revert the phone to the stock ROM, lock boot loader and unroot. Nothing to really worry about.

Just make sure you read before you flash anything, I also came from an Evo 4g. I just got my LGOG on 4/1 and I rooted and unlocked mine the next day. I scared myself a bit because I soft bricked the phone, but it is so easy to restore. Honestly rooting and unlocking this phone is a lot easier than doing it on the evo once you have an understanding of what you need to do
Alright that gives me some confidence haha. I'll sit down this weekend and read up and root it. Thanks everyone.

As a former best buy employee i can tell you that best buy does not care if your phone is rooted. No where in your insurance does it say that they won't cover rooted phones. Employees won't even look at it. Box it up and send it out is the policy. I traded in my rooted evo lte running cm10 to get my optimus g and no one batted an eye.

I can vouch for this and say that I soft bricked my evo 4g lte and it just so happened that my g/f had purchased the geek squad warranty (even though I told her not to), geek squad will send your phone to be repaired and if you want a loaner phone you have to pay a 50$ deposit. I got lucky and read the receipt to find out that if you are a reward zone member you have 60 days from initial purchase to make an exchange so I was able to swap two evo 4g lte's for two lg optimus g's
Word of advice, when rooting/flashing whatever the OG, make sure you dont make the same mistake I did and type in "Sprint LG Optimus G" into the forum search cuz there are two separate boards for sprint and non sprint OG's

If you have to send it to repair just flash a ROM which have Stock Recovery and use Triangle Away to reset the counter. Check on Dev Section for more info.

I got told my best buy doesn't care about root... But it's fairly simple and quick to unroot and flash stock rom and recovery, which I would do to be safe anyways.

I had black tie insurance and best buy doesn't care if the phone is modded (only iphones)
Just Google foxfi, sprint blocks it in the market, but I believe it can be found on their website....no need to root for free tethering
Confirmed. I returned 3 Epics rooted. They never even confirmed the complaints. They just got me another one within 2 days.
Yeah I tried foxfi and it's not supported for s3 yet.

I got my phone about a week ago. I purchased the best buy protection because sprint is getting outrageous for their total protection and with the ded going up to $150 its really not worth it. When I got it the Woman at best buy Mobile told me that it didnt matter if the phone was rooted or not, it would still be covered.
I work at best buy and we do not care if the phone is rooted and tryIng to use the protectIon plan. If your rooted and trying to exchange within 30 days because u messed the phone up, we can say no. That rarely happens though because if u did F up, u probably bricked and phone doesn't turn on lol. Did have a guy delete his modem or chnaged some settIngs In ##data# or something he could not get service no matter what I tried. Couldn't exchange his phone for him lol because he was rooted and my manager saw that.

Again...a misconception of the deductible...
If your phone is lost or stolen...damaged beyond repair, water damage etc it's $150 done through asurion
Minor mishaps as discussed here you walk in they confirm, you come back two days later and pick up replacement phone...no fee
And sprint policy currently covers rooted phones
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
If you bring it in for software issues they might decline sending it out for rapid exchange(depending on the mobile associate's or Geek Squad Agent's knowledge of rooted phones), but if it's hardware damage from accidental they likely won't care. Just remember you'll have to re-root when you get a phone back since they don't give you the same phone.

yeah, i know exactly how the TEP works. take it to a service center and they will fix if they can, replace if they cant as long as no signs of physical damage, lost stolen or water, then like you said, have to go through Assurion. I just dont think its worth it now that they raised both the cost of TEP AND the deductible.
I didnt know, however, that Sprint would also cover rooted devices. I have heard stories of people being turned away for repair on rooted phones.
They don't seem to care about anything. I've sent phones with stock root and also custom roms for repair and they've never said a word. Say what you will about geek squad but the black tie on cell phones is more than worth it. Especially if you have teenagers

So, my phone fell out of my pocket the other day, and the screen cracked and spidered and the touch is no longer working. I was going to have it replaced through the insurance. The phone is rooted, unlocked, and I was wondering do I need to return it to stock before sending it back, and was wondering how to do this? I've been looking through threads and haven't seen anything about relocking and returning to stock. With the screen not working I'm not sure it is an issue, but I want to be sure. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help.
Sorry to hear about it.
Look under Android Development. There is a thread that will help you get lgog back to stock.
Hint: it's the very first one.
Or just return it as is. If the touch screen doesn't function due too crack, i doubt they'll make a fuss about rooted or not.

i went through the EXACT same situation last week, my phones screen broke and no longer registered touches. Asurion is out of stock for the LGOG, they are going to try and offer you a GSIII, tell them no, explain to them the specs are nowhere near comparable and demand at least a Galaxy Note 2, or make them find you a LGOG, they said it wasnt in stock but once i made a complaint with the BBB they just happened to "find" one. They can make it happen but you have to be firm with them.
I gave a copy of Sprint's service policy to xda and the other sites some time ago. I'm surprised that rumor of Sprint not servicing rooted phones keeps coming up.
You will be fine sending it in as is. If it is severely damaged, Asurion will just salvage it for parts to rebuild another LG.

Lets hope that we can take other carriers versions and flash them to T-Mobile since they're all the same... Why? Because I'm not paying 640 bucks for a phone. Sprint phones almost always end up on eBay much cheaper than retail.
If you have a GS3 there isn't really much of a point of upgrading to the GS4... I'd wait for the 3Q and 4Q devices to drop. This beast still has plenty of oomph in it...

I thought the S3 and Nexus 4 were pretty much the same spec wise?
I had an LG phone before and had a terrible experience... And LG doesn't give a crap about customers with problems. In fact they (lg) went out of the way to erase Facebook complaints comments, etc... I seriously doubt I'd buy another LG device.

I'll be waiting to see what the Motorola X and what nexus devices launch. Also rumor or the Sony xperia line coming to Tmobile so I'm gonna check that out as well. No point in upgrading from s3 to s4.
I've seen the s4 in person since I work in a store and the Samsung rep brought it to us and it is a beautiful phone. The screen on it rivals that of my 42" Samsung TV as far as quality of picture. For anyone not already on an s3, it is a wonderful upgrade but I Dont see the point in going from s3 to s4 especially with s3 rooted on 4.2.2
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I, too, have heard rumors about the Xperia line coming to T-Mobile and I am quite interested.
As for the Nexus 4, don't do it... The build quality is terrible... Just go play with one at a store... And as was said, LG makes terrible devices. The G2x was the biggest fail of a device I've seen in a long time - which really sucked given its potential. A lot of people really hate the Nexus 4. If you DO get one, make sure you get a super case for it.
I had an LG Optimus 3D. Suffered from Ghost calls and Ghost text. People would call, the line would ring on their side but the phone wouldn't make a peep. Same for text, they would send, but they would never get delivered to the phone. LG swept it under the rug. Erased the Facebook comments complaints. And to my knowledge never acknowledged the flaw or offered a solution. It's well documented in the lg forums right here on XDA.
After that I said I wouldn't buy another LG if I could avoid it. (never say Never... LOL)

not sure how that is going to work since you just got the S3. i know they are doing new pricing plans, but i just got my daughter the iphone5 but since i was not up for a full upgrade i paid $200 down, but only pay $12 a month for it instead of $99 and $20 like advertised. you may have to lay out a lot of money to get the S4 now. it shows $149 down and $20 a month, but that is usually for new customers or those of us who have a full upgrade available
i could be wrong though
I dont see a point in upgrading from s3 to s4. but from s3 to note 3 that should be worth it. Well who knows the wife just got the new HT C ONE and its a good phone in my opinion but I had bad experience with the Amaze before. I think that if you are interested in roms Samsung is the way to go with. with its unlock bootloader out of the box and easy to dev with. When HTC you have to wait for S-OFF etc
Release for online just got pushed back to April 29th.
Smh!
Might as well wait till May 1st and get it at a store instead of dealing with shipping.

Yes, it's not illegal. But it does void your claim on the warranty, and if the rep was having a bad day, he could have easily turned you away for rooting.
What I have found is that although it is not " illegal " . It does not necessarily mean that you will not get a hard time about it. I have had very different experiences even in the same store. Both negative, and positive. So I've learned it's better to remove as many reasons for people to give you a hard time as possible.

Well I don't think being rooted would have any affect on a cracked screen. However I would restore and unroot to be safe. Never know if some pissed of employee wants to take is anger out on you and flag something on your account. Or put notes that could hurt future insurance issues.

Well, as a few of you may or may not know, I bricked my LGOG (running dirty unicorns 4.3) and couldnt get into LGNPST or recovery. Anyways, I took it to best buy and at first, they werent going to replace it because they said if its after the first two weeks of purchase, it has to be shipped out and exchanged. We (my mom and I) called the Geek squad corporate line to get some more info because one person told us it would have to be replaced with a refurbished phone. That makes no sense, why have insurance if youre just going to give me something used, right? Well, after we read them the paperwork that was given to us with the purchase of our insurance, they confirmed that it would be a brand new LGOG.
Turns out, the LGOG is on back order so they said if it's not here in a MAX of 10 days, I can come into the bestbuy and pick out a phone of my choice that day and keep it. I'm probably gonna go with the G2 or that gorgeous blue HTC One (Although, id be happy with another LGOG, anything is better than this Nexus S 4G i have to use)
At any rate, I just wanted to tell you all what happened, in case you have geeksquad insurance and didnt know what they would do if you bricked your phone and couldnt fix it yourself. I only posted because i know when i went looking for answers i couldnt find any clear ones.
Seems like the geek squad insurance is really worth getting. When I do get to upgrade I will definitely be checking out bestbuy.

Ah, bummer. Makes sense, though.
I haven't bought anything from Best Buy in... probably 10+ years.
I dropped my phone, cracked screen, non-responsive to touch. I am getting a refurb in the next day or 2. No mention of a backorder to me. Best part is that it wont cost me a penny.
Of like kind. Is what it says and i've become rather familiar with the reasons for that. New or refurbished. If it is backordered for 14 of it being checked in then it is a new phone of like kind. And im rather familiar with the rules.

Regarding Geek Squad Protection
Before some point mid Oct. they used to cover screens for minimal cost @40 now it is $150. Other than that still worthwhile.

Yeah I got the old insurance. I just sent out the LGOG I JUST got back due to a Security error lol. I was trying to restore an old EFS but ended up relocking my boot loader. So now I'm stuck on a Nexus S until November 13th. If my LGOG isn't back then I'll be getting a Nexus 5 or G2.
