I get its like Roku, but even.. what does it do? Can you stream local stuff or just things that are offered on the fire platform? Reason Im asking, is that my father is thinking about dumping FIOS. As he never watches "season style shows" He just turns it on to watch something when bored. So something like Fire Tv I think will be cool for him... He wont be playing games, just watching random broadcasts.. He said he liked the Roku and like the 99 cent movie channel.. Does the Fire TV have the same setup as the Roku?
Thanks guys!
Of course, Id be rooting it and downloading that XBMC that I seen. Again I dont know much about it, but it seems like most recommend to do that and root the unit. I seen an OTA blocker too... thanks agian.

The Fire TV is primarily a video streaming device. Meaning, it plays videos from the internet. The videos it streams can come from several different sources. Some are free, some cost money per video, and some require a paid monthly subscription which lets you play any videos in the library at no additional cost.
Here are some of the most popular video sources used on the FIre TV:
Amazon Prime Instant Video: This costs $99 a year and allows you to view any number of movies and TV shows in their library. This also comes with other perks from Amazon, like free 2 day shipping on most orders.
Amazon Instant Video: This is Amazon's movie and TV show purchase and rental service. You can buy movies or TV shows individually. Once purchased, you can play them as many times as you want. This it the digital equivalent to buying a DVD/Bluray and putting it on your shelf. This service also allows you to rent movies and TV shows. Renting gives you limited access to a movie or TV show; essentially enough access to watch the video once.
Netflix: For a monthly subscription, you get to watch any and all of the movies and TV shows in their library. The selection is better than Amazon Prime Instant Videos, but it's also more expensive considering there are no additional perks. It's strictly a video streaming service.
Hulu Plus: For a monthly subscription, you get access to their library of TV shows. Generally, TV shows will be available on Hulu Plus before they become available on other services.
Netflix and Hulu require that you install a free app on the Fire TV in order to access their videos. Where as, for Amazon Videos, you have direct access to them form the Fire TV's home screen.
You also have several free video options. These all require individual apps. These are services like YouTube, Pluto.tv, iFood.tv, Smithsonian Channel, Tubi, etc...
Lastly, you can play local videos stored on a PC in the house. This is what XBMC and Plex iare primarily used for.
Thanks. I already have Amazon Prime, so I can tag my dad on to that..
And thanks for the description.

You're welcome. If you already have Amazon Prime, then it seems like the Fire TV is a good option for your dad.
If your dad is not technologically savvy, or you're worried he may be confused with which videos are free (via Prime) and which ones have to be purchased, I would suggest installing rbox's mod which allows you to hide certain menu options. I have a guide here. This will allow you to hide the "Movies" and "TV" sections (where most of the content is not included free with Amazon Prime) and keep the "Prime Video" section (where all of the content is included free with Amazon Prime). You can also hide all the other sections (like, apps, games, photos, etc..) which it sounds like he will never use.
To install rbox's menu hidding mod, you have to be rooted, so be sure not to accidentaly block rooting during the inital setup process of the Fire TV.
Thanks again. If you dont mind, what all would you suggest to do to it when I receive it? Should I install Llama and that XBMC?
Also seems that Roku has more "misc" movie channels for free versus the Amazon Fire.. no?
Awesome summary from AFTVNews....
Want to add a few things:
-- Amazon prime videos (movies/tv shows) load way faster on FTV than on any other platform. I have PS3, Samsung Smart TV and Wii. It is a no contest when it comes to speed. So, if you are going to watch prime content, FTV is a much better option, just for this reason and even if you don't root it or load anything else like XBMC.
-- As mentioned before, you can buy/rent content from Amazon. Do keep in mind that even if you buy, you will only able to watch it as long as your Amazon account is in good standing, as in forever. If Amazon bars your account for any reason, all your buys will go poof.
-- FTV has a voice enabled search and works reasonably well.
-- If you have your cable subscription through a vendor that allows you to stream WatchESPN, you can download the app and watch all content on it through FTV (along with any other ESPN channels you subscribe to). This was the main and only reason I bought FTV (but now I know better to be happy with just ESPN, LOL)

You can get all the "free" movie content if you install and use XBMC. Roku might have way higher number of gross apps/feed, but if you are not going to use it, why buy it? And FTV has so much more superior hardware.

As a personal preference, the least modifications you do on FTV, the less the chances of wrecking your FTV. I have accepted the trade off of a few more clicks to run XBMC over changing the launching behavior of my FTV. Just an opinion.

@dbdoshi added some great points. If you, or a family member has a cable subscription, your content selection increases because of apps like WatchESPN that let you watch for free if you already have a cable subscription with one of their participating providers.
Llama is primarily only used to reduce the number of clicks needed to get to sideloaded apps. I agree with dbdoshi and feel it's not worth the extra complexity just to save a few clicks.
XBMC is primarily useful for local videos on a hard drive or PC. There are some extensions for XBMC which let you stream more content for free, but most people install it to play their own collection of videos.
Lastly, yes, I agree that Roku has a wider selection of content sources than the Fire TV. I don't have much experience with Roku's, so I can't comment about the quality of their selection but it does seem larger.
Let me add a couple points here. First, you can't share Amazon Prime videos, the family share thing only covers the free 2-day shipping. This doesn't mean you can't give out your Amazon login/password, but if that person starts buying movies and such.... Roku has a boatload more apps, something like 1,700, but unless you are looking for some odd niche there really isn't much on Roku that you can't get on FTV. HBOGo being the biggie if you subscribe to HBO. Side-loading XBMC works great, plus gives you access to all the legal and questionable plug-ins. Between the XBMC plugins and the native FTV apps, I doubt there is anything available online you can't get.
I didn't bother rooting my FTV, and for a casual user I wouldn't recommend it. Sure, you can do nice things like change the launcher, customize the menus, or enable USB storage (something I hope Amazon does in a future update), and other things, but you don't need root to side load apps such as XBMC. I'd rather stay current with Amazon's updates and improvements than worry about blocking them or getting caught up in a cat & mouse game of root exploits.
I've read that android doesn't support HLS streams and yet both the MLB & NBA apps on the firetv suggest that they support DVR type functions during live games. Can another confirm if this is the case? And, if it is the case does anyone know how MLB & NBA are making this work?
Thanks.
my guess RTMP + RTSP or even html 5

NBA game time (with league pass) does not allow seeking on the firetv for live games. Plus, it doesn't take up the whole screen, with black borders all around. Terrible. But there's no nba for chromecast

Just found out some apps that I didn't know about, so I will share because they work perfect on the Fire TV.
First it's LiveTV from various channels live Fox, Showtime etc. Go to Mobdro.com website and grab the apk. Play around with it most channels are 480p but it's free. Works inside and outside the US.
Second is CartoonHd which is like Showbox or PopcornTime but is limited. Most movies and cartoons here are 720p and 1080p. Download the apk at CartoonHdapk.com
Hope these apps help. If you have more movie or TV apps that you can share please let me know.
If links don't show up, check the url on the screenshots posted.
Both apps work with the stock remote.
Mobdro has been around for a while. Its basically just filmon, but the only good thing about it is that it has all the UK channels that are missing/geoblocked from all the other filmon apps. To get the UK channels on filmon you have to have a subscription to UK TV or satalite service, but mobdro has them for free. They can be found all over the internet too, but its always good to have an app.

Not really similar, but if you're a sports fan, "World Sport Streams" is a great app for streaming HD sports channels. The links are auto updated. I have actually had channels stop and 10 seconds later a new link would be posted, so its a great app. You have to install MX Player and XMTV Player, cause some streams work with MX and some work with XMTV. It says to install MX and OXY players, but I think they stopped using OXY Player for their streams and switched to XMTV Player, but haven't got around to changing what it says on the app. It has a few TV channels too that are not sports related, all the sky movie channels.

it works. however, currently need a mouse to fullscreen the video, the remote works everywhere else in the app. i have already requested that they fix in a future update, as well as show more titles on the selection screen., more should do the same, since it is new and in active development it will likely get fixed, the more of us that ask should also help.

are you asking for warez?
I set up Plex on my home PC as a Plex server and purchased a Plex pass.
I can then sign into it on any of my devices in my account or allow guest access on the network and have 0 issues.
I did think it was free at first but ultimately I had to purchase a pass to play more than a minute as indicated on their site.
Support them if you like it, buy a Plex pass lol.
---------- Post added at 10:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:01 PM ----------
to add right from Play store description:
• LIMITATION: Playing media from your Plex Media Server on the device running this app is limited (one minute for music and video, watermark on photos) until the app is unlocked.
adter further research, needing a Plex pass is something new that was recently implemented. I am not sure if it applies to every app for every device but it is now needed for the Android application.
Plex server is still free on PC but apps you are limited until purchasing the pass.
To the OP
Just to add that we support developers here, so don't ask for cracked versions of for-pay software.
I understand that for Plex there has been a change as said above which may make it work differently on different devices, but please no "crack" requests
Mike

Hi All.
the purpose of this thread is to combine all the information we have about watching Live TV on our devices.
I'm purposely avoiding Kodi addons, they seem to come and go due to their questionable legality, and it's a hassle to keep up, there are already multiple webpages discussing them.
here goes nothing.
Proper Live TV
1) Android TV Live channels
it's in my opinion the best way to watch TV on Android TV devices, the necessary framework, but does not seem to be popular at this stage
2) NHK World app.
NHK world is a fantastic app to watch NHK World TV, recently made Android TV compatible, it does not yet integrate to Live Channels, I have sent NHK an email requesting for this, but have not heard back.
If you support this, please send them an email, the more the merrier.
3) Cumulus TV.
This app allows you to manually enter HLS streams into Live channels, it's got great potential (if you have some HLS streams) but it does not work properly at this stage. developer is working on fixing it.
If you have any HLS streams or m3u8 links, please contribute.. if this takes off make we can share json files.
4) Mediahhh
App for UK Live TV channels, works great, not available in the play store, does not integrate with Live channels unfortunately. emailed them but no response.
Semi Live TV
1) Pluto TV.
Great app, makes channels from youtube sources, and integrates to Live channels. try it!
2) Haystack TV
Has a few Live USA channels, doesn't integrate with Live channels.
3) Class6ix news
Has news channels tailored to your location, I believe it works in US, UK and AUS
thats about it from me..
anyone?
Just wanted to point out that the current version of CumulusTV from the play store (1.4.10) as you mentioned doesn't work.
It has been fixed for a week now with the release of version 1.5.1
Two options to get the latest release is either sign up for beta's on the play store by just visiting this link:
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.felkertech.n.cumulustv
OR, get the latest compiled APK direct from github and sidelaod it

There are a bunch of apk's floating around here's a link to some http://justnewtech.com/android-apk/
The best way to watch live tv for me is through kodi. There are a bunch of free addons-Castaway,DNA TV etc. They are pretty stable. If you want something that's really stable try DEXTER TV in kodi. The pro version cost about 5 bucks a month and has 390 live channels in HD.

Hi there.
thanks, most of these are for on demand watching.
what I'm looking for is live TV.
some are "live TV" basically just point to an HLS stream from somewhere on the internet, but the selection of streams is very poor.
ccloud is one of these addons that is supposed to be the best atm, but it has gone downhill to the point of being unusable.

Mobdro ( has ads)and Husham ( no ads) live tv apk are live tv apps. Hushams app has 600 channels.
Most people know that kodi addons go up and down however Dexter is the most stable. 5 bucks a month for 390 channels ( most in HD) is cheap. The "donation" is for the equipment to keep the channels going. Other IPTV services charge alot more. I don't know of any other live TV apps that are free!!! apert from the first two apps I mentioned, but they only stream in SD. I'm not affiliated with Dexter but so far that's the most stable source I've found. BTW there are way better addons than cCloud.
Cheers.

Do they integrate with the Google Live Channels app? After testing some of the ones listed in the earlier directory I can say most of the ones I tried not only did not integrate, they did not work half of the time or required the use of a touchpad or airmouse simply to navigate around. Disappointing.

Yeah, I agree with you, very dissapointing.
Although, we can sort of expect this of some dodgy app, but for mainstream apps, this should not happen. It's not that difficult to change the app for proper Android TV controls, and Live channels. they probably can't be bothered due to the low user base.

You should bring that up in the FB group or email them. Are you using DEXTER PRO? The regular Dexter(non pro) will be down for a awhile. Like any other addon there is sometimes a server overload however the Dexter team is good at getting it( pro version) up an running quickly. Clean your cache in kodi that may help.
LWS, UK turks, Channel Pear, Ares streams, Khaoz live tv and Navi X have live TV channels. Not every channel works but you can save the ones that do to your favorites.

Anyway there is a custom kodi build called the Gears of War and Gears of War TV. It has live tv channels that are exclusive to the build. it's free this offers some good stuff. There's a few apps for the HDHomeRun devices. I forget the names since I quit using them when I sold my old HDHomeRun. The cool part with the HDHomeRun is that it would let you watch any cable channel (You could also use an antenna) you have including DRM ones playback in Live Channels. There's also PuppetMaster.TV which has news from around the world and some live streams from the International Space Station. The Weather Network which gives you nationwide weather reports but shows your local weather on screen overlaid on top of it. Bloomberg and Haystack TV both support Live Channels now as well.
