Quality replacement glass, or quality replacement service suggestions? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I just replaced my glass with a glass kit from Amazon. It was quite easy. However, it seems this glass is quite inferior. The display is not nearly as vivid, and the glass seems to reflect a lot of light. The screen is almost completely washed out an unusable in sunlight. I'm assuming it's the kind of glass this cheap $25 thing used.
Is there a known good OEM quality glass I can use that doesn't suck?

I replaced my glass as well. However I went on eBay and ordered a complete OEM LCD+Digitizer. Only because I've read reports that the glass alone is a cheaper quality.
Sent from my Freeza MD4 Stock Rooted Galaxy S3

The original screen and digitizer is bonded (glued) to the OLED display. I don't know how the original bonding is done, but I would guess that the method and bonding material has a lot to do with how transparent and free of reflections the display is. Seems like something that would be really hard for a do-it-yourselfer.

Ya there was optical glue between the display and the glass. The DIY $25 replacement glass doesn't have that. Just the tape around the edges. It looks like other have had the same result as me. I'm going to be sending it in to Samsung for their $178 OEM repair/replacement. This cheap glass will get me through the week and I'll send it in on Sunday.

I had the same issue and I ended up just paying Samsung for a replacement because it was so bad.

You know what's funny about this. For the 13 years I've owned a cell phone (always with sprint), I had the $7/mo total protection thing. Never once in 13 years did I ever break a phone. When I bought the S3 in the fall, I said screw this waste of money and dumped the total protection plan. Of course, I then promptly drop my phone off a ladder and smash the screen. (@&#$.
At first I was annoyed. Then I realized that total protection plan has a $150 deductible. It's only $178 to send it in for repair. Now I'm not as mad at myself. Although if I totally destroyed it or lost it, that would probably be a different scenario.

So my sister just got her S3 and dropped it. Screen had multiple cracks in it. She thought it would be easier to order just the top layer since the screen still could be touched. But when she tried to repair it the other screen came off and now it's just a black screen. I'm wondering if the most we would have to pay is 150$?

It is $178, not $150. I'm not sure if that will cover the cost of the display too, or just the glass. I think it might cover the whole display and the glass.

Are there any places that sell the Gorilla glass version of the top glass and not the cheap glass? I've found several chinese sellers on ebay, but they all look like the knock-off version of the glass.

Same screen protector as Infuse???

Trying to get ahead of the game. Isn't the Infuse the same screen size and layout as the Epic Touch? If so Seidioonline.com has some great screen protectors.

Not sure on that but I do know Skinomi has the Epic 4G Touch one for sale, mine shipped this morning.

I'm not asking sarcastically, I'm generally curious: Why bother with screen protectors on these? They only cloud the view and the screens are so incredibly hard to scratch that I can't imagine what you'd have to do to them that a screen protector would manage to prevent. I know my Epic 4G didn't acquire a single sign of damage in its year, and that's pretty unsurprising given the Gorilla Glass that's used on it. Same should apply to the Touch.
I've got the same seidio protector on my epic. You can't even tell its there. Looks and feels exactly like the screen.
Sorry if I sound like a fanboy, but I've tried another companies invisishield?? and it totally sucked ass! Paid dearly for it too, like 30 bucks. It was nothing more than a piece of vinyl.

I've had my original epic without a screen protector since the first day it was released and it still doesn't have a scratch on it. The salesman at the sprint store even commented on how it looked brand new when he was trying to sell me a screen protector for my new Epic touch.
With gorilla glass it's really not needed, unless you just like spending money.
I ordered the Skinomi one too.. but you guys (and others) are making me doubt its necessity. I'm just paranoid that one day it will be scratched by some sand or keys that I forgot were in the pocket.
What if you drop it on sharp pavement/asphalt in such a way that it simply slides across it, would it still not scratch the gorilla glass?

Just search YouTube for Gorilla Glass and watch the absurd and painful things they do to it without effect. RAZOR BLADES across its screen, baggies full of screws, etc.
And in your scenario you'd be far more likely to shatter the screen than scratch it, and no protector will stop that.
I agree with the no need for a screen protector on Gorilla glass. I used to sell phones on craigslist all the time and did find that some people managed to scratch iPhone screens. I'm sorry, but if I pay that much money for electronics, then I am gonna take care of them. Then again I've seen people with ragged out Mercedes and Audi's also, so go figure.

iphones use "scratch resistant" glass also which is all gorilla glass claims to be. All it takes is one grain of sand in your pocket to get micro scratches or worse on gorilla glass.

Because they don't cloud the view at all if you use the clear ones and they actually do scratch quite easily by sand and other debris. Look no further then the plethora of scratched iPhone 4s with gorilla glass and you can see it's nowhere near scratch proof.
i made this for every1 asking about screen size of infuse v epic touch
The dimensions listed are sometimes misleading on those sites; I owned a Vibrant which was techincaly a different size than international SGS yet every single accessory fit like a glove. That is obviously not the case with this device, but the dimensions are pretty close.
I opened like 4 boxes of Infuse accessories at Best Buy this morning looking for something temporary to protect my device while better options appear and aside from a few minor things, all of the cases fit the ET4G well. The Infuse is more square than our device and the headphone jack and volume rockers are a tad off (though still usable). Only major incompatibility is that mic hole is in wrong place on all the Infuse cases. I ultimately did not end up buying anything, but I am almost positive that Infuse screen protectors would be the exact right size.
All it takes is one scratch to ruin your phone experience. That's my opinion.

this phone appears too fragile!

So I have a cracked back cover, and I now found a crack on the plastic bezel today. Not drop damage. It must be stress fracturing or something. I also have minor scratches on screen. The stuff I wouldn't see until a year of use with prior gorilla glass phones.
My buddy dropped from pocket onto his wood deck and the glass cracked.
I see multiple people reporting cracked screens from minor falls.
Starting to question the reliability of what appeared to be a great device. Phones shouldn't need babied.
Other thoughts or experiences?
Dropped mine the other day, minor dent to bezel next to screen and its barely noticeable. Kicker to the while thing is that I was on my way into T-Mobile to return the case that was on it and I dropped it coming out of my car. It bothers me but at least the screen didn't take any damage. I have the full coverage on it in case of any future damage. But the phone definitely needs to be babied.
No case? No screen protector? I've dropped mine 3-4 times...no damage to either casing or screen. For a $500 device...keep it reliable by buying **** for it.

I have a ****ty screen protector on it now, and yes I have a case. My buddy's screen cracked while in a case from a waist high fall.
I haven't needed a screen protector since gorilla glass. That's been like 4 phones ago. I never experienced scratching like I have now.
Seems like you may be a little to rough...Buy a case. Hell even a flip cover would provide "Some" protection. No one ever plans to drop their phone, it happens. Even the smallest dent would bother me lol.
solution = get a case + screen protector. Honestly this is a device you use all day and carry with you. You are bound to drop it, let it slip out of your hand or watch it fall out of your pocket, bag, etc. dropping phones happens! it not just some myth..

Smartass solution: Take better care of your stuff. I've had a cell phone for 8 years and not once have I dropped any of them on a hard surface.
Real solution: Get a protective case, not a cheap little plastic something. Otterbox Defender or Trident Kraken.

buy it at best buy and buy the black tie for 9.99
when i ordered mine from verizon i went on youtube to learn about it and saw a guy drop an iphone and the S3 from his pocket level. Both screens cracked.
verizon offered for 6.99 two repairs per year each at a cost of 100. And, no more than 2 per year!
Best buy i found out for 9.99 will repair or replace for nothing and as many times as you like!!!
I canceled verizon and waited till best buy had it and bought it there with the black tie plan.

Along the same lines, I've got the gray Speck Candyshell on mine and love it. I haven't dropped it (yet...but I will) and I'm confident it will protect it. FWIW, I've also got the ZAGG HD screen protector, so mine is well-protected.
I can't imagine people using a phone like this without some sort of case. Everyone knows how the shiny back of the Candyshell scratches, but I couldn't care less about that. I look at it like this...the scratches I see on the case would be on the back cover of the phone if it wasn't on there. Better for the case to take the damage than the phone.

A small speck of sand in your pocket is sufficient to cause a scratch, depending on how it rubs the screen.
The candy shell designs are very good tbh. I had the Speck single-piece, in black, on my Galaxy Note and it felt great. It had the lifted lip edge for the screen and a mixture between hard plastic and TPU/silicon. It cost me $45 for that case not $5 for a silicone case like those guys that cracked their phones.

Wow! That sucks! I have dropped my Galaxy S2 several times from 4+', landing face down on pavement, without cracking my glass! I've chipped the outer plastic casing mind you, but the glass itself has survived every drop!
I get the impression from this that the glass on the S3 isn't as strong as the glass on the S2! You would think that as the device grows in versions, that Samsung would be making it better, not worse!
The galaxy s3 has gorilla glass 2. Several times stronger than what is on the s2

I'm pretty sure their both gorilla glass. I could drop my s3 ten times and it might not break but a friend could drop his s3 once and it might just land poorly and crack. It's just the way things go sometimes. You can find a glass replacement kit on eBay for the s3, you just need to choose the white or blue bezel.

Same here. My S2 was dropped, pressed against keys etc and it never got any scratches.
After 2 days with my S3, the screen has visible scratches from my jeans pockets (why is there a freaking metal button near the pocket entrance o.0 )
anyway, even if its GG2, I feel like the screen is more prone to scratches somehow...
Well the s2 and s3 are shaped differently. The glass on the s2 is flat and the s3 curves out a bit so you're more likely to impact the glass on the s3 when dropped.
Do they not have a red replacement yet? Dang. Also I noticed these are for the international version. I assume that it would fit the ATT as well? I haven't tried taking it to them yet. Might tomorrow. But honestly not holding my breath.
With these increasing threads about S3 and the screen being cracked even by the minor drops, I had no choice but to buy an impact resistant case that best protects the screen.I just purchased the Ballistic Shell Gel (SG) Case for Galaxy S3 which seems to have pretty good reviews. Worth a $20 investment to save a $600 jewel. I'll post a review when I receive the case.
Look into the Zagg extreme.. There is a youtube video of people from best buy testing it with the sgs3.
I'd you didn't know by now. Our screen is one of the worst screens since the original iphone in terms of being fragile.. I wouldn't be surprised if it broke dropped onto thick carpet..

Repair costs
Sooo..All interesting comments.
Anybody have a replacement cost for this? I know I can buy replacement glass on Ebay for 25 bucks but I've been told the replacement is not easy and may likely break the digitizer below. The digitizer and glass is about 250 on Ebay.ca
A local repair place will fix it in one day for 350. Their cost includes a new digitizer and glass as one piece. Explains the comments about not replacing the glass by itself.
I've contacted Samsung and they'll take a look and if determined that it's not a defect, I'm liable for the costs plus the $30 diagnostic fee. Fair since I dropped it. Had a case but didn't cover the screen at the point it dropped. Stupid choice by me.
So I'm trying to determine what the cost to replace the glass will be by Samsung. Anybody gone through this yet to know?

I'm not sure what replacing by Samsung directly is, but I know of two shops that replace just the screen(yes, you read it right) for $125 & 150 respectively. So maybe using this as reference, is what I'm assuming you might pay if you send it to Samsung perhaps.
I think I am going to attempt to fix it by using the glass replacement in some of the other threads. My question, would a hair dryer work, or should I just invest for a heat gun?

For Those With Cracked or Scratched Screens

I have had my SGS3 since July and I have had a screen protector on it except for 1 week and in that time the phone got 3 nice scratches on it.
I am anal with my phone as I have a screen protector on it as well as one on the back and a rubber case over it also, so this is not a case of
being careless.
I put a post on Corning's Gorilla Glass 2 Facebook page and I got a reply saying basically Get in touch with Samsung as Corning can't do
anything, but if I want to discuss the problem further, contact them at [email protected]
Why doesn't everyone who has had problems with their screen contact them and maybe they will see this isn't an isolated incident.
This is what I wrote and what they replied...

I am very protective of my phone. It was scratched in the (1) week I didn't have a screen protector on it. My original SGS's

There's lots of ways to scratch glass, a bit of grit or sand in your pocket ETC .. i wouldn't risk using my phone without a protector for even one day.
Might have to eventually just accept you scratched your phones screen.
I too have been very careful to not scratch my screen. I am fanatical about clean hands. The smallest partical of dust seems to be able to scratch the screen. Note 2 front glass replacement

Hi guys,
So unfortunately I cracked my Note 2's front screen by accident, and now I'm trying to see if I can replace it.
It's just the front glass, not the actual inner screen.
I just have one question, I found many front glass replacements online on Amazon and ebay, but are those actually Gorilla Glass 2 like the original or that is simply not possible and they are all just "normal" glass?
This seller here:
eby.co.uk/itm/200899972266?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619
Replied to me and said that it is Gorilla Glass because "normal" glass cannot be used.
Other sellers on ebay said that it's normal glass.
I have already ordered this one from Amazon though (hasn't arrived yet):
amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00A2IAUWS/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Any opinions from people with more experience than me? is it true that there is no "normal" glass actually and it must be Gorilla Glass 2 anyway? or they are all just normal glass because you can't get the original one (unless you get it from another defective unit I guess)?
Cheers
yes it is..
hi mate.. i have thesame problem.. i was so drunk and my note 2 fell off from my hand while txting.. and that stupidity coasts me 30 bucks! i got a front glass replacement from UK (same link u have). i did it on my own and it's been a couple of months now since i've replaced it.. seems like it's gorilla glass since i'm not using any screen protectors and it didn't get any scratches.. but i doubt that it's an OEM.. and one thing by the way.. i've applied it by myself and i tried to use my S-pen.. for some reason it's not working.. so please send me a reply if ur S-pen works after the front glass replacement.. thanks!
Hi, I have just replaced glass on S3. On eBay there are two glasses, one with Samsung name on and one without. I made sure I got one with Samsung name on and the markings on the back are very similar to the one I took off. I suspect therefore it is Samsung original.
Also I stuffed the first time and had to take the new one off again and do it again. I gave it quite a beating doing this, so I think it would have to be gorilla glass ...ordinary glass would have broken for sure.
Some eBay sellers state 'original glass' so I think if the name is on it you are pretty safe.

amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00A2IAUWS/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Any opinions from people with more experience than me? is it true that there is no "normal" glass actually and it must be Gorilla Glass 2 anyway? or they are all just normal glass because you can't get the original one (unless you get it from another defective unit I guess)?
Cheers

Can i use glass from GT-N7100 on note2 GT-N7105 is that posable
My first choice to getting any parts is from etradesupply. I've bought a housing from there and it was just like the original. Also you won't find actual OEM parts, however what you will find is parts that are up to OEM quality standards. Just make sure you have a hair dryer or preferably a heat gun before trying to take out the front glass.

Hello,
I have also cracked glas. :crying::crying::crying:
Replacing was not the problem, by heating with support of some videos.
I tried new one on it, but there is no touchfunction, only SPen is working.
The double sided glue tape is only at the outdside area. Is that ok or should
there something between screen and glas ?
Do you have a set of glue tape and glas, where you know it is working good ?
Need your help very soon....many thanks in advance !!!!
best regards huggy2008
