I love how Google stopped using different names for what are essentially minor platform changes as far as developers are concerned.
It is slightly more confusing for consumers, though, because it does make a difference for them.
DEVELOPERS:
Developer: "What are you running?"
User: "Jelly Bean."
Developer: "OK, you can see all the features of my app, then! Good!"
CONSUMERS:
Consumer: "So what's on these two phones again?"
Store Employee: "Jelly Bean, but one is 4.1 Jelly Bean and the other is 4.3 Jelly Bean."
Consumer: "Um, what?"
Store Employee: "Well, see with this one, you can... errr... wait.. I mean, wait, which one has the unlock widgets? I think that was 4.2.... or did 4.1 have it already too?"
Consumer: "??????????"
People got spoiled. Could be iOS

I just think 4.1 jellybean, 4.2 jellybean, 4.3 jellybean seems a bit ridiculous and confusing
I guess it just gets hard to push out more innovative game changing features so these releases usually have small features that make using android easier , like joe said , iOS does just that. Small updates at a time and lots of them .

I actually like that in a sense, it is the naming convention that annoys me.
It seems like a lame attempt to try to get past the fragmentation argument "Look this many phones are on jellybean (yet we neglect to mention there are three different versions)"
Yeah that's kind of what I meant. Like on iphones when an update came out you simply referred to it as like " hey are you on iOS 5? " " nah iOS 4 " or something like that. I guess they could always name the 4.2 update m&ms and 4.3 skittles haha. They definitely could've done something better for the string of updates if 4.3 really does come called jelly bean .

I think all the little updates that android has done over the last while is what made it so much smoother . They are paying attention to the details. Cleaning up lag and changinng minor features that make it much better to use. I had the original droid but switched to the iphone because the android os wasnt as stable. But they have done a lot of work and now its just as smooth. But a much more personable and customizable os. A lot funner to use. I was debating with the iphone 5 and the galaxy s3. Im very glad I came back to android.

Yeah but how many people will actually end up getting the newest jelly bean?
Aside from being confusing and sharing the same name this doesn't really fix anything

Touch-pea... I mean touchwiz From Samsung? Very few. I'm not worried. Looking forward to cm 10.2.
Each jelly bean update has brought some nice and time saving features. Using AOKP 4.2.2 that task650 has done a great job on makes it hard to go back to 4.1.1.

There weren't very many changes from 4.1 to 4.2 and provably to 4.3, so Google is probably saving their key lime pie for android 5.0, which I guess might have lots of changes like how 2.3 was to 4.0.

I think we are blind to think VZW doesn't have an impact on when HTC release source for the latest google OS's.

You guys will like Jelly Bean. Ive been using it for the past 24 hours now. It's really smooth. Some of the new stuff is really cool. Google Now will make Siri look old hat
I don't think it will be to unreasonable to see JB make it to the Inc2. I did a few edits today, and used the same apktools that I use to decompile and recompile Ics with, and most of the edits that I made are in the same spot as they are in Ics.
Hang in there, it will be soon

I imagine alot of ppl will be underwhelmed when we do get JB. There's not going to be much visually different, and project butter pushing things to 60fps throughout the ui will help, but this is already a pretty smooth phone. I was seeing some lag issues, but I reflashed my current rom & everything is back to silky smooth. Don't get me wrong, JB is a welcome addition to an already amazing device, but it's not going to be like the jump from gingerbread to ics, so I can be patient. Also, as a couple others have stated, I'm loving TW over AOSP now. I never thought I'd say it, but TW is full of incredible additions to Android that I don't want to lose. I love the beauty of stock Android, but it's a fair trade for all of the functionality.

I still doubt we'll see official 4.2.2, even if i9100 gets it. There are WAY more people with those phones, so Samsung may throw them a bone. Doubt we'll be as lucky, or any other s2 model.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
I went to Vegas this weekend and flashed a Stock based ROM on my GS2. I carried 2 phones around, my main Nexus 4 and GS2.
I must say, with all honesty, in low light settings and just in general, the GS2 camera is still awesome. Hands down. Kinda makes me sad. The one annoying part is I had to keep killing tasks and clearing memory when I could. Battery just dies if I don't kill tasks constantly.
As a phone, its still great. I love my Nexus 4, but GS2 was my go to phone when it came to Camera shots. I never would have gotten the Nexus 4, if GS2's resolution was higher given the screen size.
Anyhow still a champ, even 2 plus years this phone still has my uses. I am keeping it stock mainly for Camera performance.
My two cents.
Oh yeah forgot I was running the stock 4.1.2
It'd be nice for 4.2.2 but I'm thinking this device has reached it's limit. At 768 MB of memory, it does drag and slow down on stock. Anything above Jellybean, I'd be surprised to see an official ROM for it. Regardless this device kicks booty in CM10.1

Honestly I was super shocked with the jb update, but this phone is more popular than you give credit, and I think we may see 4.2. I mean it already runs quite smooth just with CyanogenMod and jb 4.1 and 4.2 aren't too much different. Now I don't think we're gonna see a big touchwiz update, but I think they may update the android version.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Folks,
I tend to agree, we likely will never see stock 4.2.2. The odds of this happening are low. Samsung has too much hardware in the wild to really consider Hercules for another update. I know getting hardware support hinges on staying on vendor supported releases. The gear is already +/- 2 years of age. Phone companies consider retirement at that point to simplify their supply chains. Especially considering all the new gear coming out, SG4, Note 2, etc adnasium.
There comes a time you fish or cut bait. I cut bait a while back. I am even moving my wife to a used sg2s Hercules from a nexus s. Here nexus s is a dog compared to my herc.
Hercules just got cm 10.1 in the last couple days. 4.2.2. Via clock work mod.
I am running aokp. It is 4.2.2. Latest rc 1.
It is smooth and has all the bells. I am considering a different kernel at this time. What I am running though is very stable. No crash no lock up no pause. Plus keep number of apps to as low a minimum as possible.
There are ways to get better battery performance. Especially when you happen to carry two phones and use Hercules as a camera. Cut it back to 2G and kill all syncing. You will see a massive improvement in battery performance.
Also get an app from play store that is free that came from xda that helps track which apps are using Cpu and engaging the screen. It is called wake lock detector.
You will not get days and days of battery but you will see marked measurable improvement and still be running jb 4.2.2

Honestly, I don't think this version of the Galaxy SII is gonna receive Jelly Bean 4.2.2 officially. I'm surprised that we even got a Jelly Bean update considering how buggy ICS was. Also, 4.2.2 custom ROMs seem slower than their 4.1.2 cousins on this device, with the exception of those compiled with Linaro.
In short, there's a slight possibility we'll get 4.2.2 TouchWiz but I doubt it.

I'm guessing the new camera can be used, it has an improved UI so its easier to use than the one on 4.2. But really there isn't anything else that's worth it, it's either an unfinished release, or that's pretty much what Google decided to change. There are however some under the hood improvements they talked would be pushed soon at Google I/O.

Just subscribe to my thread that is stickied in the top of this forum, the link is also in my sig. I have all the latest ports from all the devices and updated pretty much immediately after there released.
So far, the camera, boot screen and live wallpaper has been ported from the Google edition phones. These (at least the camera) are rumored to be the same as the 4.3 update. To my understanding, nothing else has really been ported because there really isnt anything. The 4.3 that leaked is essentially the same as 4.2 with very minor changes most of it is under the hood.
Personally, im hoping that that isnt the final update of 4.3 that will get pushed because it is a little disappointing.

I couldn't agree more. Hence the lack of the talk at Google io just because it is so weak. Fluidity is good but they need to keep innovating.. Unless they just wanted to tie up some loose ends before klp comes but idk its sorta strange so their must be other things in the pipeline
Edit although picture quality does seem much improved in comparison to the 4.2.2 cams we currently have. IMO they seem much less grainy and just overall better.

Not just android... Running apps looks like webOS and WP8 combined. The rest looks like android only a tad more colourful. I honestly think all that translucency they're touting masks an otherwise bland and overly simplistic UI. I mean, look at those icons! They look like a 10 year old made them.

Wouldn't know it was any different.
Those eager flashaholic beavers drooling for 4.3 roms to drop on the t989 are gonna be very underwhelmed.
My N7 isn't lagging as much as 4.2.2.....and that's about all I can say.
My t989 doesn't lag....so......4.3 for t989.....I'll pass....prolly just be a big crop of new issues to sort out....for nothing really.
For serious guys!

Yeah it's not much different, I also did notice an improvement on my Nexus 7 as well.

Did you guys have 16gb versions? Because I had the 32gb N7. I read that the memory in the 32gb was faster. I had cm10.1 with m-kernel and everything was fast, smooth and snappy. Scored a little over 15k in antutu.

Yeah I have the 16Gb version and I was primarily running Franco.kernel

That's probably why. If you go on the N7 forums anyone with a 32gb is doing swell. Only people with 16gb versions are having performance quirks.

Just me personally ....for us I'd leave 4.3 alone. The glitches in 4.2.2 are finally getting smoothed out now.....and to start developing 4.3 and the new issues that will arise seems kinda pointless.

I think people should just let this phone die and move on. Developers can't keep supporting an aging device forever, and the t989 has had an amazing run support wise. What more do people want? I can't see this phone running better than it already does.

Some developers, just like I am, are stuck with thus phone awhile. So I'll appreciate further development. Just don't think working on 4.3 will be of any benefit. Just keep tweaking 4.2.2. It still isn't glitch free. We have 4.1.2 also for touchwiz fans. I see no point in worrying about 4.3....it brings nothing really to the table....except probably more glitches.
So I can't move on....but I agree our range of roms are working well enough.....just keep optimizing 4.1.2 and 4.2.2. 4.3 and key lime won't improve anything....just add more headaches. The t989 will probably lag out on key lime I'd guess.

The Hercules still has a another 18mts to 2yr expected shelf life in terms of being supported by tmobile, there not going to drop it anytime soon so I'm sure we can expect development to continue, like others have said some ppl aren't fortunate enough to be able to opt into a newer device so as for me, in going to continue to build roms kernels and mods for this device, Sammy is expected to bring it to official 4.2.2 , don't expect it soon but this device won't die until 4.2.2 is released, just like the s3 and note will all so updates at 4.2.2

People had that same negative attitude about G1 and HD2 as well and look how far and long they have come from there releases. My G1 had android 1.5 when I bought it and 2.3.7 when I sold it. My HD2 had windows phone 6.5 when I bought it when I sold it it was quad booting with CM10, Pacman, AOKP, and PA. But by all means feel free to move on to a newer "better" device. I am very happy with my GS2 I am running Hellybean, and seems faster than my buddys toro.
Yeah 4.3 doesn't look very exciting to me..yes it brings a few new features but overall there isn't much to get excited about.
But I may be proved wrong.. Well just have to see how this phone performs

I on other hand would love to see all future upgrades on this phone, Phone is still sold my tmobile so I don't see a reason why development should stop.. Also phone is well capable of handling 4.3 easily so why not? If you're like me who uses phone for emails, browsing, movies and minor gaming, This is a perfect phone.. Only thing I don't like about phone is battery drain during sleep and poor batter performance overall. everything else is just fine.. So yea I can't wait for someone to port future upgrades on this phone.

No one will disagree with you. But, if we aren't getting official 4.2.2 or 4.3 and up....development will halt or slow down at some point. Its inevitable. Personally I'll stick with 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 for now. Unless 4.3 is developed with no more glitches than 4.2.2 presently has. 4.3 adds nothing to the s2 really, so I won't run a rom that has too many problems when its no different than a previous version that's stable pretty much. 4.3 helped the Nexus 7 with its lag issues for sure, but that's it. But I think our phone doesn't have those lag issues like the N7, so 4.3 adds nothing that we don't already have.
Now key lime pie may add/change a lot.. if our phones can run it smoothly. So that may be worth all the issues porting it will bring.

KLP is said to run on a device with as little as 512mb ram, so if that's the case the Hercules should run it easily, maybe not allll the bells and whistles, I mean its old hardware and that has to count for something but I don't see why not ...I'll keep developing this phone as long as I have it, an if I can get klp to boot, I will share lol
