Hello,
I have a Kindle 8.9 that has been rooted.
Everything works fine except that I have lost all location services. Google maps works, but it cannot locate my position. It always says that location is unavailable at this moment
The strange part is that I installed Opera browser as someone suggested and lo and behold, location is found when I access google maps via the Opera browser.
There was a thread related to this a while back, and to my knowledge, it was never solved.
Anyone got any ideas of how to fix this ?
thanks
OS Version may make a difference
I'm rooted 8.3.1; seems to play nicer with google services. When rooted 8.1.4 (what it arrived with at the time) location services did not play with google--it showed my position in Colorado when I'm in Arizona. Mapquest should track you though. Maps likely won't with that OS version.
Granted, I don't have TWRP installed, so I've not gone far down the rabbit trail. You've got a few options:
- Update to the latest OS (8.3.1)
Easy peasy. You're already comfy rooting. Download from Amazon, hook your KFHD to the PC, drop the update .bin file in, disconnect, update, reroot using b1nary sony method (ten minutes max), install busybox ... okay, bit of a wrinkle there. I have a busybox installer installed prior to the update. It'll be there after--just root and reinstall busy box. Then use kindle fire first aid to install google play store. All told maybe 20 minutes. Your GPS should track then. Do all the kfhd's have gps? I'm not sure, don't think so. If you've LTE, it does, and you should be tracking like a boss.
Fyi, after updating and rerooting, clear data on the Amazon apps (kindle, vod, silk) if you want to use them. You'll have to redownload your books/media ... if I don't do that, I can't see any of my books 'n stuff.
- you could give SteriROM 1.2 a shot, seems GREAT for a simple all-in-one kinda solution. That'll upgrade you OS to 8.3.0.
Either way, upgrading is a good thing.

yes indeed i am still running 8.1.3. Dont know if there are enough compelling reasons for me to upgrade. Any thoughts ?
I am a newbie, and rooting was a serious pain in the ass. It took me days to figure everything out and by now I have forgotten how I did it
I was interested if there was a patch I could apply to 8.1.3 instead of upgrading and re-rooting.
thanks

--I understand "set & forget", but there is no unrooting update. You're going to have to familiarize yourself with the process, get comfy with it. It really DOESN'T take much, but you do have to make that initial investment.

Yeah, no such patch.

I'm not aware of gps working with google maps on 8.1.4. Use a different nav app, mapquest, if you're sticking with it.
Otherwise you'll want to use Lizzard30's SteriROM 1.2. It'll upgrade you, it's more stable, and it's actually fairly easy.

Hi all. I was one of the people moaning about the woeful volume levels on my T-Mobile UK Desire. I solved the issue by flashing with a generic ROM (although it seems to be a Virgin Media ROM judging from the bookmarks)
Anyway, being in the UK I didn't have access to the free Google Navigation...I even gave the Brut hack a try but uninstalled it due to it's unstable nature and lack of features.
Well, I've just been prompted to update to Maps 4.1.1 and I now have navigation. Fully functional, with the arrow and the street name (both missing in the hacked version)
Is this a general roll out by Google? Is this now available to everyone, even on branded ROMs, or is this an added bonus of flashing a generic ROM?
Let me know
UPDATE:
Google officially verify Navigation: http://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/mobile/navigation/
I'm not using the desire (nexus user here) and navigation appears to be working ok for me as well!
Haven't recently updated maps (was on 4.1.1 before) so they must have allowed it to work in the UK now w00t!
glad to hear you got the volume sorted... no navigation or update to maps here.. i cant even seen google maps in the market even though it cam pre installed on my phone.. .bummer
I didn't even notice I had this. When I got my Desire, the update to maps was one of the first things it asked me to do.
I added the Brut hack because I just assumed it wasn't there.
It does state it is in beta still but yea, seems Navigation is included now.
Working for me here to on my Desire. Just going to remove the brut hack to test it works without that...
[Edit] Yeah, it works fine with the Nav Launcher and Brut hack, excellent!
Well spotted Aitese!!
I hadn't bothered downloading the update to maps as I was using Brut maps and it worked well enough for me. However downloaded the update today, selected that newer version of maps for navigation and it is working. Haven't compared it against the cracked version (sat in an office) but looks to have more information on the screen etc.
Have you got some screenshots? I've got Google Maps 4.1.1, but it all looks the same for me....what am I missing?

Can't do screen shots as I don't have all the development junk here but just search for a destination and when it finds it you should have several options, show route, navigate or street view. The navigate option wasn't there when I first got the phone last week.
Am I right in thinking the option "navigate" should be right under "show on map"? If so, I've not got this. I'm running the stock rom with Google Maps 4.1.1. Iv'e never applied any hacks to get navigation in the past.
If I'm doing something wrong, please let me know as I'd love to get this working.

Cool, working now. Had to reboot the phone to get it.... w00t!
Yea, that's where it appears on mine.
I select 'Directions' from the menu, enter my destination, then under 'Show on Map' I get the 'Navigate' option.
I've uninstalled the Brut hack now and it's still there.
working for me on T-Mobile UK
Happy days! I wonder how none of the tech blogs have spotted this.
Yep, definitely working for me on T-Mobile.
Shows up on my phone now after a reset, sweet. Shame I don't drive
Get the impression it might be a mistake though, looked at a google forum thread where someone mentioned on the 14th that they had navigation working on the 14th of April on his Nexus one, and a Google employee responded a couple of days later saying it was only enabled in the US.

I've had 4.1.1 on for a while so not sure this is version dependant (certainly haven't noticed it up until now anyway).
FWIW, Maps is on my T Mob handset as well, and has been since I got the phone wed /thurs last week.
I haven't tested the reliability of it though, but it's def there.
I'll try it out on the journey home...
Works fine for me on generic HTC ROM...bonus!! Does say it's beta but meh
Tmob, works fine. Announces it is a beta.
Hello all!
I purchased the Fire Phone (32GB) two months ago when there was the liquidation sale to get rid of the stock, and I jumped on one! For the value, even at the $120 or so I paid for it (not including the free Prime membership), there aren't any (if at all) phones with a Snapdragon 800, 2GB RAM and not gigantic (looking for a phone that's 4.5" to 4.7"). After unboxing it, and playing around for a few minutes, I put it back and haven't touched it since.
I was hoping there would be more ROM development. I've used Cyanogenmod in the past and loved it (previously had Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 all with Cyanogenmod), but I don't think the experience would be the same on the Fire Phone since Cyanogenmod is not officially supported. I read about the camera issues (somewhat important to me) and would hate to jump into flashing a ROM that has so many problems. I use Google Wallet/NFC from time-to-time as well. Finally, I want to use Tasker, and although I already purchased the app in the Google Play store, I want to be able to use it on my Fire Phone and would have to repurchase it, but I need features that require root access (do I have root access or can I easily root it?).
The apps I mostly use are: Viber, Whatsapp, Chrome, Snapchat, Instagram, Tasker, Instwogram, Google Maps (absolutely necessary as I drive quite a bit), Gmail, Google Drive/Sheets/Docs, Flashlight (wish it were a built-in widget like it was in Cyanogenmod), and Twitter. I don't mind keeping the Fire OS if all the above apps work flawlessly. I could care less about the Fire OS theme, because most of my usage is within other apps which I'd assume are identical between the Google Play store and Amazon Fire Store. With that being said, would I have any issues with any of the above apps? Do I even need Cyanogenmod or SlimKat? Would be experience be better with either of the latter ROMs instead?
Finally, does anyone know if hot spotting is allowed? I have Cricket and my Cricket-branded 1st gen Moto G LTE does not allow hotspotting. I know the Cyanogenmod allowed it. I don't expect to do it often, however, it is nice to have that feature. Does anyone know if the non-carrier branded model directly from the Amazon store allows hotspotting?
Thanks for reading!

Based on the apps you're using, you should stick with Fire OS. The custom ROMs can't reach their full potential, because some of the important sources are not available (Camera HAL, NFC).
Therefore, in-app camera usage is a bigger issue:
Snapchat users are basically forced to use Casper as a replacement, because this app is able to access the camera without freezing / stopping.
WhatsApp Web also doesn't work because you won't be able to scan the QR code and lastly: no Fire OS = no NFC.
Periscope and Twitch streaming does not work on the Fire Phone, for now...
You could start with using an alternative Launcher like Nova (+ Tesla UnRead) or Google Now.
The 4.6.3 version and the latest AT&T version (4.6.5) of Fire OS support Google Play services.
You can root the device with Kingroot and replace it with Super-Su afterwards.
Twitch only works if you use the Amazon store version; I don't think the Play store version works still.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I just updated my Fire Phone and waiting for the final update (GSM - 4.6.3). Let's say if I wanted to update it to the AT&T version of 4.6.5, would I just download the image from Amazon, and drag and drop it into Internal Storage as they're stating on the site? I have Cricket, and while it runs on AT&T's network, I don't want the typical AT&T bloatware. Would it be advantageous for me and my app uses to update to AT&T 4.6.5? I'm sure I'll probably lose hotspotting (that is if I even have it now). Do you think it might be a better idea to hold off, and wait for the 4.6.5 GSM update (if ever), or dare I say Fire OS 5 update?
Thanks again!

I went from 4.6.4 AT&T to 4.6.3 rooted. When I made the move I didn't do a factory reset. I noticed last weekend the phone was trying to connect to an attwifi network in the area. It was never able to connect. And, interestingly enough, I was not able to prevent it from trying to connect unless I disabled the wifi. I use StraightTalk (on AT&T's network).
I've recently started having issues with the GPS so I moved to 4.6.5 unrooted (using adb sideload) so that I could contact Amazon for help. I don't really see any differences between 4.6.3 and 4.6.5 except for the MyAT&T app, an AT&T Wifi app (which doesn't have a launcher icon), and the single APN setting for AT&T (IIRC 4.6.3 had APN settings for other networks).
Once I'm done dealing with Amazon's tech support and the GPS issue is resolved (or I get a new phone). I plan to go back to 4.6.3, factory reset, and root. 4.6.3 was working well for me, and I'm hoping the factory reset wipes the attwifi crap.
Thanks so much for your input! I just got some reassurance that 4.6.3 (GSM) is for me. I was second guessing myself as I was installing and reconfiguring all my Google Store apps last night if this was the right decision or if I'd have to do this all over again if I switched to 4.6.5 (AT&T).
I pay for additional data, but I don't have Hotspot in my Cricket Plan. I see that I have the option to create a WiFi Hotspot with my phone. If I use it occasionally (very occasionally, maybe when my home internet goes down or I'm travelling), will I be charged for it automatically? Or can they not tell the difference without major digging?
Thanks again!
From my experience with Cricket, they only control the Hotspot feature when you use a Cricket branded phone. So for instance, my Nexus 5 and my wife's Fire phone both can use Hotspot, but on my kid's Cricket Moto E, Hotspot does not work because we don;t pay extra for it.
I'm sure there are rules about not using it, but I do quite frequently, and I've not had any problems or warnings.
Using the amazon os and loading google play onto my 4.6.3, everything in the google play store has worked flawlessly. Any of the launcher works great ( i personally use smart launcher ), and google syncing stuff like games work perfectly. Once u have the play store you can grab google maps and it works great as well.
Using Tmobile my hotspot works without any need for modding settings nor any changing of any plans specifically for hotspot ( which is great i dont know how long i dont have to pay extra for wifi tethering for though ), and as im on the 10gb plan it comes int great when i want to do homework with the laptop where there isnt fast wifi.
My snapchat finally has the face filters too, something even pure google phones dont have yet! I am extremely happy with how this phone works out as the next closest thing in performance is a 250 dollar motoG 2015 or one plus X
I have cricket and I'm able to hot spot (4.6.3 rooted with sideloaded google services). There's a flashlight icon available as part of the notification panel (swipe down from the top), so I use that instead of a widget.

Hi. Sorry for a dumb question. My daughter has this phone and it's all messed up. Won't open apps, won't always send texts (hangs and says sending). Got a new SIM yesterday and same thing.
Where do I get 4.6.3 so I can reflash it and are there instructions anywhere?
Thanks!

See this post.
I'm running stock AT&T 4.0.4 ROM, rooted with CWM. Google Play Services just updated to version 9.2.56 (034-124593566), and it's sucking my battery dry and making the phone run hot. I have a spare phone and brought it online, and the same thing happened as soon as Google Play Services updated. It is running anywhere from 50% to 80% of my battery when the screen is below 10%. Yep, it's using more than 10x what the screen requires. Battery that used to last 18 hours now lasts 2 to 3. Others have posted similar comments in the Play Store (like that's going to do any good). Common theme is it's older OSes.
I have tried disabling everything and it doesn't do any good. Too many things break if Google Play Services is removed. Going back to an old version is futile -- it self-updates within minutes. I tried GServiceFix and it works for few minutes, then the usage creeps up again.
I sent Google an email, but I expect nothing less than the run-around. So, I turn to XDA Developers.
First, is anyone else here still running stock, and did the same thing happen to you? How about on other ROMs (please specify)? Did you find a fix?
Assuming Google will do little to help, I need to do something to make my phone work right. So if there is a ROM where this is not a problem, I guess it's time to jump in. Problem is, some of the links in this forum are broken. I've found (or already had) most of what I think I need except a version or EFS Professional that works on our phone. I can find no working links to an older version that will do the job. I do have a Nandroid backup (also stored on my NAS), which I believe can restore the EFS, but I'd like to get just the EFS in case I need to load it to the system after flashing. None of the tools available in the Play Store seem to work on the Glide -- I end up with an empty backup directory.
My plan, assuming there is a Jellybean ROM without this issue, is to flash twrp-2.8.4-flashable.zip, since I understand TWRP is required for JB, then do another Nandroid backup with it, then flash whichever ROM is suggested to get over this. I've looked at Bubor's CM10.2, and it looks like it will fill my needs unless it also suffers this problem. If there is a reason I should update the Kernel, please let me know. I have not seen anything that makes me believe I need to.
Man, I wish one of the manufacturers would come out with a similarly sized new phone with a slide-out keyboard and AT&T compatible. I'd gladly upgrade, but there is nothing out there that meets my needs. Samsung S5 mini with slider -- I'm in.
Hi,
its one year later...
I'm with the same problem. Do you still have a solution?
Other ROMs have issues with camera and BT...

A few months back, I had side-loaded Google apps onto my stock device.
(I'm on 4.6.6.1 now - not sure if this upgrade happened recently...)
I am using it with a Project Fi data-only sim and letting the kid use it for Pokemon Go.
All of a sudden, PoGo won't start (GPS signal not found), and I can't load the Play Store (it just says at a blank white screen). Anyone else have something like this happen, and is there a simple fix?
Me too, today Nov 11 my google maps and play store dont work
same for me since 4 days....
I'm not on stock atm but in the past that exact thing would happen to my Google play if Google sent an update for it's services that somehow broke it on the firephone. Google has made about 3 updates this month so try reinstalling an older version or something and see if it works.
I don't need this when the whole world is falling apart.

All my fire phones were working fine with side loaded framework, google services, play store etc. as explained in the xda forum. They would automatically update and nothing broke except for a brief period a year or so ago which got fixed automatically after a few days. I know Google broke it with an update at that time, but not sure who fixed it -- Amazon or Google.
But now, the same things has happened. With Google Services update a couple of days ago things have come off their moorings.
Youtube, Maps, and the Play store itself are on the blink. Other things which require Play services also are gone, of course.
I am afraid, this time around, Amazon seems to have really given up on the fire phone. So the chances are quite bleak that they would take any trouble to fix this. eg. They don't even support Amazon Music Unlimited, and Audible on their own Fire Phone! Both are Amazon's own products!!

Thanks. That got me going for 36 hours. Then it automatically started updating, and back to square one... Google Play Services has stopped working blah blah blah..
The deicsion to freeze and branch off from a version of Android was a very short-sighted selfish, customers-be-damned decision.
Amazon seems to be a really bad version of Apple without the technical wherewithal to sustain itself.
What a pity. The fire phone itself is a great one.
Is there any chance that a non-Google non-Amazon fix can work at all?

Since we're here, I'm assuming we have our phones rooted. That said, is there some way to just block the updater with a firewall or something similar?
The new google play services update broke all amazon google services in stock fire OS
We have to block the update process or wait for fix in next play services update
Anyone find a way to fix it

Sorry, the would is still fresh..
No.. none of my phones is rooted. The beauty of this Xda-forum solution of side loading the four files (Account framework, Account Manager, play services, & play store) was that they don't have to be rooted.
Just update framework and Login Component to Version 4.4.4 and delete the data from store and Services and everything should be fine.

Updating all manually to the newest kitkat version does seem to do it (though, I only just did it). Didn't even check the versions as I assumed they auto-updated as well. Should last a bit longer now till that version is too old.
Good catch. Thanks.

Not sure if people are still following this thread but I thought to share. I was able to sideload Amazon music unlimited. It disables native music app but doesn't launch using the same app link. I need to use ES Explorer's App library function to select and launch. Otherwise it works well. Not sure if the audible app would work the same.
I was messing around with xposed and Sony framework for ps4 remote play. I tried running Netflix and got an error, don't remember syntax. So deleted Netflix and tried to DL and now it won't show in play store . went to history to see it and says incompatible. So I did a dirty flash of same older ROM, same thing. So i did a full reset and installed lineage and same thing, incompatible. What am I missing?
Bad enough my nexus' rotation is broke, touch screen randomly doesn't take inputs, usb port broken, only charges and can't connect PC for files. Wireless charging randomly doesn't work and drains over night, etc. The one thing I had was some browsing and Netflix.
I had the same thing, the last update of Netflix it said it was incompatible and since then it doesn't show in the Play Store. Luckily I still have the previous version installed, but failing that you could try installing version 4.8.5 from https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862715472

****ers. This did it meanwhile I thought my **** was broken bad.
Now lineage looks OK but typing in browser has 2 second delay before showing on screen.
Incidentally having looked further into the Netflix problem, apparently this is deliberate on Netflix's part; they've just decided not to allow installation on unlocked/rooted devices. At least they haven't blocked it entirely, I suppose, but I see lots of people threatening to close their Netflix accounts over it - most of the recent Play Store reviews are 1 or 2 stars because of it.
Yeah people are getting their accounts locked and banned due to this. Such a silly move from Netflix, classic corporate decision and they think it'll help stop piracy with offline downloads then people using root to grab them and upload them. Seems the long way to do it haha. If anything this will drive people to piracy, however we who root are a big niche so I doubt they'll care.
Magisk will get around this but you gotta be careful as if stuff updates then SafetyNet breaks and you open Netflix you'll be screwed. Or use an old apk like someone mentioned further up. Though this may turn server side soon.
it's because ur rooted. the netflix company has started blocking ppl from installing netflix to a rooted device or a device with an unlocked bootloader. idk most of whts going on but i think it has something to do with androids version of widevine. u can still get the latest netflix by sideloading the app from downloading an apk from a trusted source like apk mirror. hope i helped!
