You should try a couple different kernels. The right kernel can make all the difference.
System monitor. Turn of wifi data GPS sync Bluetooth etc when not in use

So I unplugged the phone at 7am in the morning, its almost 12 hours since.
My Usage was browsing 20 mins, facebook 10 mins, 5-10 texts, few apps installation,5-10 emails,5 min instagram,10 minutes of calls, 5-10 minutes reading pulse,GPS on for 5-10 minutes
And general other things using the screen to look up contacts etc.
These are the screenshots below.
Im running everything stock jellybean 4.1.1,stock rom, stock kernel. Its rooted and installed flash apk.
Now i would like to know is this really light Usage?
For this usage,is the battery life good or can it be made better?
Thank you for your time!
Check your location settings in Maps. It seems Google Now is using up the battery by using the "Update Location" feature on my phone.
Yep the location settings are all enabled.

I think the "Location" features in Google Now need some fine tuning. I believe Google Now requires that you have location updating turned on to work so I have opted to turn off Google Now to see if Google will make it more efficient in the future.
But does this constitute average battery life?

Maybe I've always had below average battery life, but if I'm on any rom and I get 12+ hours of it + around 3 hours of screen on time. I usually consider it average. But that's basically what I've got on any rom/kernel, even stock.
At least your Nexus has better battery life than mine!
I'm using stock JB JRO03C ROM with stock kernel + XXLF1 radio baseband and with 3 hours screen using will drain my Nexus's battery too quick...
I gonna buy extended battery for my GSM Nexus but it will not help really much, maybe I gonna test Jame Bond kernel for Jelly Bean if that gives better battery life to my Nexus..

I'd just checked mine and I'd gotten about 15 hours with at least 100 texts, 4 5 minute calls, 2 hours of music playing through headphones, constant facebook checking, and wifi on for 50% of battery time all with google now turned on and when put on charge still had about 30% batt. left.
I am using the jelly belly v3 rom though so can't speak for stock.

Wow thats amazing battery life.
I never could manage so much and listening to music drains a lot of battery for me. I'm on stock 4.1.1, I consider mine as light usage too, wish I could get more out of it.

The music doesn't seem to drain my battery much, its only if I keep messing with the player.
Are you just listening to music or streaming it?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
about 3/4 just listening the other was streaming, mind you this was into my headphones not through phone speaker
Try reducing the display brightness, it's the biggest factor in battery-drainage for me.
The display is at quite a low level. Maybe I need to flash other Roms to get better battery life.
For example right now.
My phone has been unplugged for roughly 2 1/2 hours. And I'm down to 86% and the screen usage time is only 33 minutes.

try getting CPU spy and seeing if the phone is going into deep sleep, maybe you have an app that keeps it awake?

That roughly translates to 17 1/2 hours with 3 1/2 hours screen on time. Which is pretty average depending on what apps you use.
Could you provide more details like what apps/widgets you have with what sync settings you're using, email accounts, weather, etc?
Also, what variant of the Nexus are you using? GSM? Verizon? And are you using the stock battery or an extended?
Am getting 11hours 30 minutes now with 10% left.Thats worse than yesterday with pretty much the same usage. Infact i defaulted to 2G networks and didnt even use 3G.
Sure,Im using the stock weather widget and what's this song widget.
The apps that i use daily are pulse, facebook, twitter, gmail, messages, people, speedtest(maybe once or twice a day),xda, gallery, google talk, dropbox and Gtasks.
2 Gmail accounts and 1 other email account are in push sync.
and maybe few pictures with the stock camera app
Im using the GSM international version
Im on stock battery.
The accounts in sync are shown in the screenshot(except for dropbox, everything else is on)
Its even worse now.
6 hours from unplugging and am down to 50%

Facebook is notorious for battery drain. Check the settings in Facebook and make sure to "uncheck" the location setting. Also, try to switch a couple email accounts to do "hourly" checks instead of push (unless you absolutely need them to be push). Also, try reducing the sync intervals on apps like Pulse and Twitter.
Considering you're using the stock battery the battery life seems on par with the usage your phone is getting even when not using the screen. Push, sync, and apps that use a lot of data transfer (like Dropbox) use significant battery.
I noticed the "Maps" application is using up a good amount of battery in your screenshots which means it's probably updating your location quite a bit and/or you use Navigation. Either way, that eats battery life as well. A lot of apps use location so it would be best to check those settings as well.
Also, depending on when you're using "2G", it could mean it is taking longer to pull data which might lead to battery drain.
Hi,
New to the note 2, not new to being a flashaholic. Being very tame atm and only using stock rom (rooted) with no Cwm.
Strangely I get about 10% drain overnight. Got better batt app but doesn't really show much except wifi is/was on.. And this audio_out_2.
Is that normal on stock rom? On the dhd it was more like 1-2% on experimental roms

Disable stuff manually or use Juice Defender Ultimate (3.9.6). I use JD and never turn anything of manually.
I do have sync on. I guess what people are trying to say it's pretty standard on stock rom and I'm in need of an awesome custom rom to flash?
I used jd ages ago but configuring is a bit of a pain.. I may try it again till awesome roms comes out.

Check you applications, I have 90 apps installed and only have 0.5-0.6% per hour while sleeping with sync on.
Tonight, for example, I left wild blood downloading the last 200 mb it needed.
It took like 5 minutes, then I woke up and I noticed that it kept the device awake for 6 hours even after finishing the download, Battery went for 50 to 43% in 6 hours..
Custom roms won't make a great difference.. Maybe removing some bloatware will do, but you can stay on stock imho.

Just a question, do you, by any chance, have SIM plugged in? I observed quite higher power drain (overnight) when I did not have SIM inside.
Yeah, I have sim in at all times.. Erm apps wise, I've not added any new ones before my upgrade so I guess if there is an issue it would be some bloat apps? I tried to freeze as many as I dare using tb. (well, I followed the script of apps to delete on the other thread).
What app did you used to find what apps drained x amount per hr? That seems like a clever one
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, I have similar experiences. My phone drains around 10% overnight with no apps in the background and wifi off.
So what I'm doing and it seems that it has marginally helped is:
1. Turn off Sync
2. Turn off Notifications from Email accounts as these come in all the time even overnight and the notification process and the Blue LED will drain the battery
3. Decrease screen brightness to around 40%
4. Turn on wifi only when needed
5. Disable some of the apps I don't use (Chaton, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo news, S Suggest and Samsung Store, etc)
Now I get about of 1 1/2 day of regular use.
Think I found the culprit..
Has anyone got motion feature turned on? There's that sneak wake function ticked on mine as default, I switched that off and I only got 4% drain overnight.
Perhaps others may want to give this a go and see if it helps?

4-5% per night is what I see on my GT-N7100 (intl), with Wifi on, BT off, GPS off, NFC off, Sync on.
I got Motion on though, with following features: "Tilt to zoom", "Palm swipe to capture", "Palm touch to mute/pause". I am not sure which one is supposed to be "sneak wake" one .
But now, when thinking about it, I realize I do not need any of those, so I am going to turn Motion off completely to see if it has any impact.

The OS isn't always the reason for battery drain, many factors take into play.
How often you use the device.
Applications like widgets, email push.
Wi-Fi. If your not on it shut it down it else is always going to try to find a signal and drain battery.
Bluetooth. same with this.
Using the net.
Things like Google now, it's always running and trying to update info, shut it off of make intervals longer.
These are just some things to take into account, but at all use the phone different, and im not saying the OS doesn't drain but it solely isn't the only reason.
Hope this help.

I seem to be having the same problem. ..
Same here. With sync turned off, google now turned off, and most everything else that eats battery...
In the battery setting is shows that media is eating at least 25% battery.

I'm having the same issue. I read that the media drain could be caused by bad media files, but I didn't have any issues before this weird.
In my experience when you first update to a new samsung rom, the media using the battery is your phone updating the picasa albums...which stinks because it also eats your data like crazy if you are not on wifi and forget to turn off sync until wifi is available.
I've noticed faster than normal battery drain as well on my device. Normally by 4:30pm I'd be at 40-50%. Now I'm in the 20-30% range.
I'm going to try factory defaulting it soon and run it for a day or two. OR I might not even do that and just go directly to Task's AOKP or CM10.

Before everyone jumps ship, may want to try a new kernel. KT and a few others should work on the new release. Just make sure you choose one that works on JB TW and not ASOP.

Maybe I should try KT kernel I don't know. I wiped all after updated, nothing saved from ICS.

Same here,
It's seem the culprit is the android.process.media.
Each time i bootup,android.process.media is running for about 30 min, non-stop.
I already do a factory reset+sd formatting, but no succes.
With startup manager, i can block that process, but you need to be rooted .
I use the same settings as before i did'nt upgrade yet..i got it fully charge with no texting and calls the next 1hr its already 80%..i think i would try to cycle first my battery for 2 more days..then i'll see if it still have heavy drains..thanks for the response guyss.
Check out my overnight drian! from 1:30 to 10 the average drain is around 4% an hour, Losing about 20% overnight doing nothing.

I just got this phone the other day and immediately updated to jelly bean.Though I have nothing to compare it to my battery drain seems normal. I'm losing about 5% an hour but that is with some use (it's new so I'm playing with it a lot).
I did notice more drain the first day of use (may have been because I was using it a lot) and noticed maps was taking up quite a bit of the battery and I wasn't using it. So I uninstalled the updates for Maps and then re installed it. Battery drain seemed much better after that and now the maps app doesn't even show up in the battery report(before it was about 3rd and it seems kinda high on yours as well though you may be using it).
i'm noticing about the same battery consumption as the stock ICS rom. about 1~2% per hour when idle and sitting, 2~5% per hour listening to music over bluetooth with the screen off, and 5~10% per hour surfing the net and watching videos and stuff.
Well after doing probably 5 resets on my phone , it seems like everything is working fine . I was having issues with the battery drain ,internet not connecting, and phone calls taking 2 minutes to connect.
I was having issues with high battery usage as well after updating to JB.
I froze most every app and widget associated with AT&T and Samsung (with the exception of AllShare) and flashed KT747 kernel and set governor to ktoonservative (default settings).
I am really never a heavy user during the day, but with the same usage I had on ICS, I average 15.5 hours (with the phone at approx 15% when I shut it off to charge) - screen on time between 2.5 and 3 hours; call time between 45 min and 1.5 hrs; media (which seems to be a big battery hog) only about 6 minutes. I use bluetooth exclusively, so that radio is on all the time the phone is on. I keep sync and background data on, but only turn mobile data on as needed.
Hi all I just got my galaxy note 2 yesterday but the battery life is bugging me.... I feel that it is not normal.. every 5 minutes or less the battery percentage drops by % 1 even if I am not opening any apps and I have GPS, mobile data and other unnecessary things turned off and just using Wi-Fi with power saving turned ON.. I even didn't used it that much yet, no videos or apps that consume a lot of CPU and I always make sure that I kill apps after using them, currently I am just surfing the web with chrome and it is still inconsistent sometimes it drops after 10 minutes and sometimes after 3 minutes, I also turn everything off except for power saving when I go to sleep but after waking up I noticed that it dropped by % 4 .. sorry for the long post guys but I am very worried and I just want to check if this is normal and if it's not I can get the battery or the whole device replaced since I have a 2 year warranty. I also attached some screenshots if you need to judge from them.

Have you updated your Note to 4.1.2?
I recently updated to 4.1.2 and my battery life has suffered.
Hopefully a new update will fix this.
Judging by what others have written, you should get between 6 to 7,5 hours with the screen on. I plugged mine in yesterday efter 1 day and 12 hours. This includes 8 hours om sleep and 6 hours at work -no time to use the phone at work. I did not make note of the screen on time.
As i write the phone has been on battery for 8,5 hours and the screen on for 1,5 hours. The battery is at 54%
Hope this helps.
Thanks for replying
But my device is still on 4.1.1 and haven't touched the software update option and still .. I am not getting that spectacular battery life everybody is reporting which bugs me since I love my note 2.. even while I am typing now the battery percentage has dropped by % 3

It's that a task killer icon in the top left corner? If so, you might first want to try if your batterylife improves after uninstalling that!
Also find the app called better battery stats on play store. I recommend you buy it and install it. EDIT: there is a free version of it on xda too... Then charge your phone to full and use it normally. When the battery starts to get low again, open the battery stats app and look for "partial wakelocks since unplugged"
There you might find the cause of your problems. Post the screenshot of the partial wakelocks screen here if you need help interpreting it!
There is a free XDA-edition of BetterBatteryStats as well.
I got similar battery life as Dmwitz reported, no idea how some people get 3 or 4 days or 7,8 h of screen-on time out of their device.
I have the same problem as you

That icon in your notification bar... Is that a task killer? If so, then that's your likely problem.
When you use task killers, apps that restart themselves or their services will constantly be starting up again, leading to more battery drain. Let android handle your running apps and only manually kill apps that are frozen or highly problematic (uninstall those problematic apps if you can).
Thanks for your suggestions guys I uninstalled the task killer and will try the battery app now, I will let you know once I try it
