I'm trying to access the Download Mode for my Epic 4g but can't seem to do so. I've flashed my phone back to stock several times in the past so I know I'm following the correct procedure.
The problem started after flashing my phone to Eclair DI18 using Odin and using the one click root & recovery 2.55. I was constantly receiving 2.2 OTA update notices so I clicked install thinking that I could restore back to stock if something went wrong. I received an error message during the update but the phone was able to start into Eclair so I didn't think anything of it.
Well, I tried flashing my phone back to stock today for the purpose of updating the phone, but I couldn't get download mode to start. Thinking that I could restore the download mode using one of my old back up files from CW3, I tried the restore option but it was a no go.
Is there any way to restore my phone without using Odin? I'm still able to boot into recovery mode. If that's not possible, is there anyway to remove clockworkmod recovery so I can bring the phone into a Sprint store?
Thank you in advance!

Download mode is built into the phone. ROMs shouldn't kill it. Pull out the battery, plug the phone into the computer. Now hold the 1 key and then press and hold the power button. If it goes into download mode then you can put the battery back in.
Just tried it but I get stuck in a boot loop. It boots into samsung screen, reboots, samsung screen, reboots...
With the battery in and usb out, i'm able to boot into CW recovery...
If you are holding the 1 button first then holding power you shouldnt go to the Samsung boot screen.
If you are I dont know of any other way to get into download mode. Sorry.

I found this old thread, which looks promising, but the link to the stock DI18 file is dead...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861259
Trying to search for the file on google but no luck so far.
Maybe your 1 key is broken.
Do you BONSAI?
if the 1 and power= no download mode then maybe keeny is right and ur 1 key is broken, maybe use the samsung update tool with eb13 in it?
Does that make it go in download mode automatically?
Look in the dev section for the re-rfs rom and install that.

This is the first rom that actually flashed! Once the rom is flashed, I reboot the phone and it goes back into CWM recovery... Gawwwd, this is so frustrating!

Ya, I think so. From what I can tell, re-rfs should have worked on either green or orange recovery.

SOLVED! Thanks everyone for all of your replies
I am also having similar problem.
On pressing power on botton or Volume Down+Cam+ power button.. NOTHING HAPPENS.
However I can boot into Download Mode (on battery only).
1) Computer do not recognize USB Drive. (tried uninstalling drivers > rebooting > reinstalling > rebotting ) still USB device not recognized. Even tried with different USB cable. And different ports.
2) However I managed it on my other computer. Where only 1 out of 4 USB port recognize my device.
3) Tried Odin to flash EC05 Stock... It hangs at some place or the other, and screen goes off or some times green (very rare).
4) Phone do not restart in Download mode without battery.
I tried to boot download mode without battery (plugged into computer).. but it wont.
Battery+USB = phone wont boot in download mode.
Phone boots to download mode only on Battery.
After that If i plug in the phone and remove the battery.. screen still stays on.
evening fellow rooters and droid users
i never ran into root problem before with any of my past previous phones but there is first for anything these days. so it be greatly appreciated if i can get any input from anyone about my problem.
i have tmobile galaxy s3
droid version 4.0.4
i followed the step of downloading odin3, cwm superuser and clockworkmod.tar.
copy cwm superuser zip file to my sd card
boot into download mode. ran odin3, click on PDA and locating the clockworkmod.tar
i've been reading mix instructions of UNCHECK and/or UNCHECK F Reset Timer. which one is correct?
press start everything passed and the phone automatically reboot.
powered off the phone and hold VOLUME UP and HOME and POWER button to try to get into CWM recovery tool. but i end up getting into android's recovery system NOT CWM.
where do I go from there? i re-install and used odin over 5 times already and no changes.
what should i do?
Read this it should take care of it. let me know how it goes.
i appreciate your reply however it didn't resolve anything.
the installation of the cwm.tar file supposedly say success and not failed.
i just can't seem to get into CWM recovery.
i am assume the installation of that cwm recovery.tar file didn't go thru?
Ok the other thing you can try is after you flash via odin remove the battery before it reboots when done flashing thru odin. Wait about 5 to 10 seconds put battery back in and hold volume up + home button + power button and when you see the little blue letters on the top left of the screen let go of all the buttons and it should take you into CWM. Then install superuser.zip. reboot and then you can flash recovery from either rom manager(cwm) or goomanager (twrp) and it will stick. Let me know what happens. I'll be checking the thread for your results. We will get you rooted!!!!

u beat me to the punch sir.
i was just going to say i found solution by removing battery after the installation pass.
problem solved. hopefully someone makes a note/sticky that anyone with version 4.0.4 on tmobile galaxy s3 should remove battery as instruction and take off auto-reboot.
thank you sir
Glad you got it bro, and welcome to the madness.

Its probably because after any ota update stock recovery will rewrite at boot.
Delete these
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Reinstall cwm and youre good to go.
Ive got a fw thread stickied in development and will be adding this and more soon. Will try to start on it tonight.
Theres another way without battery pull btw. Check there later and ill explain it.

I didnt see that, but its the only reason Ive seen that recovery wont stick after a reboot. They only put those files in with otas as its how they patch/update the recovery. You shouldnt see them any any of the odin flashable firmware.

All of this to get the stupid Google Wallet working. So pissed off right now.
Anyway tried to reflash my phone I seem to have screwed up the partition I think because it hangs on the Samsung logo. Tried to reboot into stock recovery and it doesn't do it (instead it keeps rebooting).
Trying to reflash the partition info, but for that I think I need a PIT file. Anyone know where I can get that??? I have been Googling the hell out of it and can't find it.

Yes.... I have flashed the stock ROM 4 to 5 times. It flashes successfully, reboots, and sticks on the Samsung Logo screen. Tried to reboot into recovery, and as long as I am holding the 3 buttons for recovery, it goes into a boot loop (like it tries to go to recovery, it isn't there, and reboots).

For recovery
- Power Down + Home + Power
- Release Power at first sign of SAMSUNG Logo EXCEPT Power Down + Home
- Release Power Down + Down at first blink of Samsung
- Once in recovery, factory reset, format option
- Reboot, wait for 1-2 mins

I feel so stupid. I didn't release power while trying to get into recovery. Although I have another problem now, and the searches online don't look good.
My Baseband and IMEI is showing as "Unknown"... Also the phone is very laggy.
EDIT
On this thread I started out by saying that I think I clicked Re-partition, but I actually think I accidentally clicked Nand Erase All... I can get to download mode and recovery mode, but my phone shows Baseband and IMEI of unknown. Any help?
More information:
When going to stock recovery I see a few instances of:
Failed to mount /data (Invalid Argument).
EDIT -
When booting phone I have no internal memory (16Gig).
that happened to me once when clicking a random box in odin without knowing what it did on my epic touch...thank god i work for sprint and was able to just order my own replacement sounds like you wiped your IMEI, and thats a ***** to inject back in...youll need to the help of a true dev to restore, but your best bet is to hard brick and claim warranty, friend.

Of course this would happen today, where warranty replacement will take 2 days to get to me.
I already installed and ran (barely) Triangle Away, and got the counter reset so I am good there for warranty. I am begging the community for two things.
If someone knows a "true dev" that may be able to help me, I would sincerely ask that you point them to this thread and see what they can do. I will be monitoring this thread VERY CLOSELY until I say otherwise (in this thread).
Can someone point me in a direction to hard brick my phone???
here is the pit and when you go into recovery you have to factory reset or it stays bricked http://db.tt/gKSxQKWJ
go into odin and place the stock rom in pda then place the pit on the top where it says pit and make sure to click repartition.then when done take the battery out boot into recovery then factory reset and it should work.

Ok so here is whats going on. There is this guy that goes to church with me that wants me to root his phone and his wifes phone so they can both use the WiFi Tether app. I tried to root them both on another computer because i did not have my laptop with me and i used this guide -->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1726088
After i got done with Odin and the phone rebooted, i powered it down and went into CWM Recovery and the stock recovery showed up with the android man and the red triangle. No CWM whatsoever. i tried to root his wife's phone and the same thing happened and i did both of them on my laptop this time. But when i go into download mode on both of the phones it says their custom binary count is 2 and that the phone is rooted. Root Checker Basic says otherwise. They said they got these phones in December at the exact same time i got mine and i rooted mine fine with the instructions i followed in that link. does anyone know what could be the problem? i followed all the instruction carefully as well. Like i said, i got my phone at the same exact time as they did and i rooted mine no problem with the guide i used on here. Thank you for your help

After flashing the recovery in Odin are you pulling the battery while the phone is still in download mode, then booting into recovery? The S3 detests custom recoveries and you can't let it boot into its os after flashing the custom recovery or it won't stick. Also make sure both boxes in Odin are unchecked so the phone doesn't auto reboot after flashing.
Edit: I read that method you posted just now and it is very out dated, the newer s3 updates made it so the custom recoveries do not stick and the phone defaults to stock recovery, unless the battery is pulled while the phone is still in download mode, and then booted into recovery. Make sure auto reboot and f. reset time are UNCHECKED
Also, might I suggest this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011491. You don't need to use TWRP you can still flash your cwm recovery
Make sure your friends' phones are on Sprint as well

Ok thanks you. I have heard of the toolkit but I never used it because I don't want to soft/hard brick his phone especially since its not mine and I have read about people bricking their phones that way but that probably because they didn't follow any if the instructions or the did something stupid. I will give it a try but before I do that I will do what you told me to do and uncheck f. Reset and auto boot and see if that works. Thanks a lot man and I will get back to you and tell you if it worked or not

Yes. In step 12 on the post you linked, the "power down" needs to be done by pulling the battery. The thread you posted is good, but I prefer the method in this post, as it both explains what's going on and it the formatting is more clear.

You have to pull the battery excuse you need the phone to shut off so that you can boot into recovery.

If your new, ODIN is probably not for you, you can severly mess your phone up. If you cant get to download mode even after a battery pull, then it sounds bricked. USB jig may or may not work. All that left is JTAG service.

Ok, if you plug it to your computer and it recognizes it, then i suggest MSkips Toolbox. It automates the whole process for you, but you must read it very carefully.
EDIT: If you were on stock 4.3 with KNOX bootloader, then toolkit won't work without adding proper 4.3 TAR file(not sure if there is one yet), because if you downgrade bootloader to 4.2 or less, your phone will brick.
