Is there any way to get this through root or custom ROM?
AFAIK no. You need the special SIMs just so you can use ISIS. Google doesn't show much love outside of Nexus I don't think. I say give it a few months and we may get official ISIS. Until then Dollar Generals and Home Depots accept Pay Pal (card less and phone less). And Square Wallet is accepted at a few places (card less).
IMO NFC payments are like 3D movies and motionflow TVs. Novel but not widely accepted.

You are correct, Google wallet and Tmobile's isis requires a secure element to which is not installed on the gs2. Tmobile has it is live in Dallas of i am not mistaken but requires a special SIM card.

NFC payment systems are currently much more cumbersome than a basic credit card. I don't see them taking off.

I dunno about all that, recently I was at a 7-11 and I had my nexus 7 with me which has goggle wallet installed. I made the transaction with no issue, in fact it was really easy and I wish that their has pumps where like that so that way all I would need is my tablet which I have with me all the time anyways. The biggest headache is finding places that would accept that form of payment and not looking like a douche... For the most part unless the NFC payment does not support one of the major credit card vendors then it would pose an issue but I would assume that they do so it shouldn't be an issue

Spend that $10 you got from Google Wallet now before it goes away on October 17. Apparently you can ask for a refund after that date, but you're charged $2 every 30 days you don't buy anything.

Didn't launch owners get 25$? Or was it just the 10$

Is there anyway to use this to purchase something from Google Play? I've tried adding it in as a prepaid card with the number, but no go. It would be nice to use this to buy a few apps or something.
How do I get my $10? Do I need to add one of my cards first?
Edit- never mind
Anyway to spend it on something fun? The only place I've used it is at 7-11 so I guess I could use the remaining balance on it for a few drops of gas
what? they recently introduced this prepaid feature and already axing it? why not keep it there as an option for those that don't have credit/debit cards..
this is typical of how google works.. if they don't make millions on something, kill it.

They are getting rid of it because you can use your own credit/debit card now with Google Wallet, so no need for them to keep the prepaid option.
I think the point was to have an option where people can just pay onto the 'cash account' at a retail POS like 7-Eleven as some people don't have a CC or debt card.

It wouldn't make any sense, the point of the per paid cards was a bit of an incentive to the quote unquote beta testers. And now that we can use any credit card, there's no point to it.

Well if you don't have a credit/debit card, can't you just get a prepaid one from a store (walmart) and add it to the wallet?

I really don't see the harm in leaving it up. If my aunt wanted to send me money, I had a prepaid card to charge her credit card to...then she won't ask why there's $5.09 used every few days (cigarettes) ha. But I guess I'll just get a real prepaid card and put it in my phone. But that kills the purpose of me using Google wallet. Not every place has a nfc reader thingie

You just go onto Google Wallet and activate a Google Prepaid Card iirc. The $10 can only be used in real life, so no play store credit.

So, as you all probably know by now, the Google Wallet Prepaid Cards will expire come October. I need to know what to spend 10 bucks on lol. Not too many places arround me have NFC terminals except like Circle K or something. So anything useful from the market or accessories online?

From what I understand and this has been previously mentioned assuming you can get Google wallet installed and the app running you are still missing a critical part. Google wallet requires something called the "secure element" which our phones do not have built in. Further more T-Mobile is coming out with their own version called Isis and it requires a new sim card which has the secure element built in. It is all ready being beta tested in 2 states currently. T-Mobile has declared that this year will be the year of NFC so I can only assume that they will expand the usage of Isis. In conclusion until that happens or you get on the sprint network using either a gs3 or a nexus device you will not be able to use Google wallet. My suggestion acquire a nexus 7 and use that until it happens with Isis....good luck

No worries, I have personally started carrying around my n7 so I can so that plus its nice to have around and don't forget that T-Mobile had stated that "this year they will make NFC happen......" Hopefully that means that they will bring on Isis.

No, you will need the keys to the embedded secure element. Or ask google wallet to implement it, what they will not do
Ask your public trasportation company to offer that. The French contractor of an overground tube here in my city offers nfc cards while the bus company offers the pay per sms way. Putting them together I'd have a rechargeble nfc app for all public means.

For all of you that don't know yet. Today's Google wallet update is now available for vzw users.
I did read comments that vzw users will need a "smart sim"
Can anyone educate me on what a smart sim is?

Has anyone tried NFC payments with this version? I'm rooted and running a hacked older version of the Wallet app on my VZW GNex that still works with NFC, and I don't think the new features are enough for me to want to lose NFC.
Anyone?
Brad
You need a secure sim. Go to my Verizon and you'll be able to order one for free. It should ask you if you want one somewhere underneath your phone picture.
Unfortunately, vz still blocked tap to pay payments. So, right now, it doesn't matter what you have. I got a secure sim a while ago just to be ready when everything is ready to go.
If you have recently upgraded your phone at a vz store, you m may already have an NFC enabled secure sim.

Do you have some more info on this for me? I've used NFC in the past without issues using official releases from the store. Also heard of people with secure element errors. I've had my nexus and sim since launch.

Mine let me setup tap to pay haven't tried it yet though but is set up and supposedly ready.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus (rooted/custom ROM) and it sets up fine for me. It doesnt say that my device isnt supported like the last version. The Tap and Pay sets up with no issues and under settings>about>Tap and Pay, it says "device is ready for tap and pay purchases." I havent tried making a purchase yet but everything seems to work fine so far.
OK, here's an update base on my experiments yesterday (9/18):
Non-rooted VZW GNex with new Google Wallet: NFC payment successful
Rooted VZW GNex with old (modified) Wallet: NFC payment successful
After these tests, I updated my rooted phone with the new app, but I have not yet tried it. All indications are that it should work (e.g. it says it's "ready"). Both SIMs are at least a year old and almost certainly not "secure SIMs" (is there any way to verify with the device?)
So, get the app and start making some NFC payments! It's great entertainment for the night crew at Whataburger and Jack in the Box.

I dont think you need a special SIM. People have confirmed it working already without it
So, ive had GW installed for a long time with an apk i got off here. Can anyone confirm that accepting the update google play is offering will not break being able to use nfc to pay?
Might try it tonight. I would probably disable before taking update being you probably have an unsupported version now technically.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I am running liquidsmooth and I can confirm that tap to pay is functioning properly. Just bought myself some grub at mcdonalds. I still have the same sim that I got 2 years ago with launch of the gnex.
Doesn't matter whether you have a secure sim or not, the API for the secure sim wasn't on the gnex or implemented properly.
Beamed from my Maguro
I remember when the gnex first came out and Google Wallet worked right out of the box!
I've been using the GW app from the APK I got here. I didn't need anything special because my VZW Gnex came with the secure SIM already in it. I installed the update and will try it later today.
I don't have a special sim and the version right from the play store works absolutely fine on my Verizon galaxy nexus including tap to pay. I've used it at the store several times already since the update. The secure sims are for Isis, not Google wallet.
