[Q] Batter draining too fast.. - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got a replacement Epic from Sprint about a day ago. Looks new, probably refurbished. They replaced my old one because it started having some problems along with fast battery drain and inconsistent battery level readings on the device.
So I have my new device along with a new battery from sprint, and I thought all would be well but my new epic and new batter is still draining about 10% every 20 minutes with light use (internet browsing over wifi w/ lowest screen brightness setting). Also, when the phone gets to about 30 or so percent battery life it starts lagging and when I pull the battery or reboot it, the batter meter will read real low (like under 10%) once it powers back up.
I am rooted, I installed The Peoples Rom all according to the instructions from qbking77 on youtube just as I had with my last phone without problem.
I have calibrated the battery twice, and wiped the battery stats in recovery.
I was having these same problems with my last epic which is why I had it replaced. Now I have a new one and new battery and the same problems. How can I fix it?

Also not using GPS, Bluetooth, etc
Just wifi and web

Sounds like an application you are installing is the culprit. Search XDA for "better battery stats" and download/install that application. It will tell you what wakelock is your problem.
Wiping battery stats has been stated to do nothing to benefit the phone/battery/user. It's a placebo. (http://www.androidcentral.com/wiping-battery-stats-doesnt-improve-battery-life-says-google-engineer)

GPS and Bluetooth being enabled is fine. They remain inactive until a process calls that action; such as opening Facebook or Maps.

I don't have many applications installed. I installed the battery app just now, so now what do I do with it? How do I use this information?

Play with the settings in the middle and last drop down menus to pick a duration of time and then toggle the top menu to see what's keeping your phone awake. usually "partial wakelocks".
Also, if you have a virgin install, then you can very well have a battery on its' last leg. We have an old phone, so it is very possible you have an old battery. Yes, even from Sprint.
If you don't see any outliers in BetterBatteryStats, then I'd suggest just spending the $12 or $20 on an Epic 4G Touch battery. That one is a 1800mAh battery, compared to our phone's 1500mAh and fits in our phone.

The only thing that seems to stand out is No or unknown connection (something like that) screen (which is always on lowest setting) and wifi (which I'm mostly connected to indoors) the battery that sprint sent me for the replacement is from the GS2 (that 1800mah that u were talking about)

Here's a screenshot of the battery stats I just took. Its been about 20 minutes since I unplugged that phone, when I unplugged it, it was at 98%... I believe it was at 87% in that pic.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app

Toggle the "other" drop down menu and select "partial wakelock".
Also, check your time without signal in: settings > battery > cell standby menu on your phone. Anything greater than 3% will be a battery drain.

Ok here's screenshots of the things u asked for... all I've done since last post was browse a couple of webpages, and took a long shower lol
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app

Things seems normal from the screenshots. Could just be an old or bad battery. You could complain to Sprint about it, 50/50 chance on getting a free replacement.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

Ok I'll try that and hope for the best, are u sure there's nothing else i can check? Just to make sure?
Also, even if I get another replacement from Sprint, I may still go to Amazon or ebay... can you recommend any sellers or specific batteries... after market or OEM?

The cell standby percentage is, in fact, greater than 3%
hence battery drain.

The screenshot you posted showed a cell standby percentage of 7%. I'm not sure what to do to fix it because it hasn't happened to me before.

So I pulled out my old battery last night and put it in the phone, and allowed it to charge overnight. This morning I put my phone through its normal use. I've been on my old battery for a little over 30 minutes and have on dropped about 8% in this time. I still feel like that's a lot, but its better than 10% every 20 minutes on the "new" battery they sent. So I'm guessing this would mean it is the battery that sprint sent that's causing the problem?

Battery issues

My phone has TERRIBLE battery life. It lasts about 2 hours usually and sometimes 2 and a half. I'm running the stock GB from that came with the phone, but I am rooted. I have tried every single from out there..none of them give me sufficient battery life. By the time i get home from school by battery is down to 30%. What could be causing this? I'm also on my third warranty replacement phone and my second battery.

Normally I would suggest going to stock for people but in your case, maybe custom is the answer.
Do you have loads of apps and accounts setup by the way?

This really has no useful information to be helped. 2 hours? On stand by, screen on time, any cpu tuners, etc?
Maybe take screenshots of what the battery chart looks like and what apps have the highest percentage.
It is about 2 and a half hours of screen on time. And I can't get a screenshot of it because I just flashed a new rom, and my battery hasn't had a chance to settle in with the new rom yet. If it doesn't improve I will post a pic of my battery stats. Thanks.

Well, I'm guessing there is an app that keeps running constantly. You should try an ICS ROM, that might help.

Same problem
I've been experiencing identical issues with my T989. I've had terrible battery life without many apps running in the background (as I use the stock task manager to execute all running apps). I've finally decided to root my device and install a 'set cpu speed' app. Even though I've set my minimum cpu speed to 200 MHz and max to 800 MHz it's still lasts for a maximum of 4 hours until I get the "Battery is critically low" message.
Does samsung provide warranty for their batteries? Because I've called to complain about battery life and they asked me to remove the battery and send the device itself so they could repair it. And under no circumstances would they offer me an exchange for the battery, maybe I just caught a bad rep?
I love this phone and all it's features and prefer this over the iPhone but I feel like i'm being forced to just purchase the iPhone 4s.

Cell Standby Issue!

Why is my cell standby always so high up? Right now the phone has been on for 3 hours and the cell standby is at 41 percent.
Here as well.
What ROM are you using?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I'm not sure but could it possibly be from the device constantly trying to get or maintain signal? Or perhaps it's just the most used thing on your phone? My battery has only dropped 15% in the last ten hours because I was working and barely used my phone, yet the cell standby was 51%.

Yeah that's what it means. But why is it so high. My old HTC Aria only used about 15-20 percent battery for cell standby.

Now i'm even having trouble staying connected to my 5ghz network. I'm literally standing right next to my router and the phone just drops the connection like every hour.
As you use other stuff those percentages go up.
IF you have had your phone on for 3 hours and done nothing with it then cell standby will be high as the stuff below it was used a lot less.
I ve had mine on the battery for 20 hours and cell stand by is 34%
If you were to say play a game for a long time then your game and screen would go up in time.
Cell standby should not be that high no matter if you're using your phone or not. This sounds like the bug the the og sgs1 epic had that always caused the phone to have a high time without signal that drained battery. It was eventually fixed with the gingerbread update. Can one of you click on cell standby so we can see if the time without signal bug is back? I would like to know b4 I upgrade.
Edit: my cell standby never goes above 7% on my SGSII. And once the og epic got the fix the cell standby would remain below the 10%. Cell standby should be at the bottom of list unless you have crappy reception and the phone is constantly searching for service.

Cell Standby is a bug, easily fixed. Use the Flashable zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732722
Some ROMS may not have this fix included, but most does. If you see that you have really high Cell Standby try this out. Worked for me, I was on FreeGS3 and the version I was running didn't have it, now the lastest release has it included.
Now new problem. the phone turns on for 2 seconds and then turns off again. this is random though. Usually happens every 2 hours or so.

This is probably due to a well known bug on the Galaxy S III series, originally reported in the international version. The actual power consumption of Cell Standby is being overstated in the stats by a factor of about 10. This is a reporting issue, not an issue with actual power consumption. See this XDA thread.
It needs a fix from Samsung.

T-Mo Note II Battery Life Thread: Post Screenies!

Figured I start a thread specifically for the T-Mobile variant. I will say that I'm pretty pleased with the battery life thus far. I hated having to give up the ease of some functionality just so my Samsung OG Epic 4G could make it through the day. Meaning, turning off bluetooth, live wallpaper, wifi, etc.
I feel like I haven't had to do that even though there is a battery saver mode already. I'm currently sitting at 54% and it's been a day since taking it off the charger.
I currently have all the bells and whistles going. Live wallpaper and facial recognition to unlock. S-Pen detection and the whole 9. Anyhow, just wanted to see what everyone else is getting.
I'd be happy with 6 hours screen on time
i had the galaxy s3 before the note 2 and i have noticed huge battery improvements
I was briefly reading through the manual and saw this:
Do not wait until your battery is completely depleted before
charging your device. Repeating this process of a complete
discharge and recharge can over time reduce the storage
capacity of any battery.
Pg 15
just thought I'd pass it along. I usually run my battery all the way down and let it die before recharging:

Battery Life

I recently bought a GSM galaxy nexus (NTT DoCoMo version) and I use it on T-Mobile's prepaid network. The original battery that it came with was terrible.. Literally only lasted 7 hours regardless of screen on time. So I bought a stock Samsung battery off eBay thinking maybe it was a bad battery. No help whatsoever. I've flashed different ROMs, radios, and different kernels. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on? I had a Sprint Galaxy Nexus and I could get up to a day on the battery with 2.5 hours of screen on time so I know the Galaxy Nexus can last a long time. What's the deal?

Could you post some info on battery drain statistics from battery settings tab or preferably gsam monitor over a full drain? I could probably help you out, just need some more info. Also try flashing fancy kernel if you haven't already. This is a newer kernel that gives the best battery life you'll find freshly flashed.
Before discharging toget battery stats I would try charging to 100% and using "battery calibration" by NeMa to clean your phone's batterystats file and then drain to zero with a screen flashlight or running gallery slideshow. This can always be a problem no matter how healthy your battery is.

The stock kernel performs way better then what you are experiencing. A custom kernel may help a bit, but it's not magic. I'd recommend using the app BetterBatteryStats in order to find out what's going on.
Do any of you think that me restoring apps would have anything to do with the battery drain? I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary in the GSAM battery stats but the battery drains way too quickly. 10% per hour even when I'm not using it..

Glad to hear that fancy kernel is helping. It's probably the closest thing to magic you'll find. I agree that 1 hour of screen time and under 12 hours is under par, but I was having these same issues 2 months ago and could not believe how crappy battery life was. It really got better though trying a bunch of different radios to find the right ones, using minimal gapps/resource hogging apps as possible, finding the right build.prop tweaks to use, and most helpful flashing some good reliable kernels like fancy and AK/anarkia that have incredibly useful customizations that stock just doesn't have, I.e., contrast and color settings, battery friendly governors and frequency profiles, optimized smart-reflex, and custom regulator voltages for display.
Well, didn't feel like it lasted too long. Fell asleep with my battery at 33%, woke up 3 hours later and it's dead. I'm ready to throw this phone out the window.

I see you got the app. Good. Now a few minutes isn't enough time to gather reliable stats. Review the results after a full drain cycle of the battery. Check partial wakelocks and alarms for suspicious activity.

Here's what was listed on BBS after a full drain. Do you see anything unusual? I turned my data on and kept it on 2G to prevent the no or unknown signal from eating more battery but that was the only change. Battery life still looks terrible.

Before discharging toget battery stats I would try charging to 100% and using "battery calibration" by NeMa to clean your phone's batterystats file and then drain to zero with a screen flashlight or running gallery slideshow. This can always be a problem no matter how healthy your battery is.

No need for the snake oil app, as simply unplugging the phone after a full charge wipes battery stats. Wiping battery stats and draining to zero aren't going to have any bearing whatsoever on this issue and would needlessly shorten the battery's serviceable lifespan.

I'm missing screenshots of partial wakelocks and alarms.

Whoops.. I forgot to screenshot those. I'll get those later today. So I put my phone in airplane mode to see if maybe it was the reception... Phone kept draining. I will try to wipe everything off the phone later and not install any apps and see if that helps.

According to these stats, it looks like Google talk and the calendar are my biggest wake locks? I disabled Google talk, turned off location history for Google maps last night, what should I do about the calendar? I feel like my phone is becoming useless because I have disabled so many things.

Forgot to add these, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What's up with battery life?

How is everyone's battery life? So far mine is worse on day 2 than I ever had in my s2.

MIne had bad battery at first but i guess it settled in and im getting great battery life now. Maybe rooting and removing all that bloat had something to do with it not sure.
This sucks. I can literally just watch the battery go down. Is my battery bad?

Umm aren't your screen shots from a custom rom that's not even out on the tmo s4?

My battery is bad too but not as bad as yours even after I delete a whole bunch of apps I don't use ,turn off LTE (my area don't have it yet),
turn off Location scan in google map (betterbatterystats showing it checking my location every 2-5 minutes). Lets see how today goes.
Battery life has been amazing for me! I'm averaging about 13 hours of of juice from 4.5 hours of screen, in other words very heavy usage. I've been showing off to all the iPhone users at work, They now want a GS4.
I knew it. I freaking knew it was going to happen. Some arse buys a quad core "super" smartphone and then starts a thread crying about battery life. really? REALLY?!
well that's okay, i suppose. you can always post on XDA and beg for a dev to cook a kernel just for you that will miraculously give amazing battery life to your quad core super phone.
okay.... rant over. now time for a more tactful response.
IT'S A QUAD CORE SNAPDRAGON. i wouldn't get too bent out of shape on battery life. And I most certainly would not compare it to another device short of the HTC One.
Battery life is great for me. I only disabled some apps, kept most of the Samsung apps, but also disable all those Air/Smart gestures. I can go 2 days without charging with moderate use.
My battery has been alright, but I don't know why "google services" is showing such a high battery usage. I had the screen off for the last hour and google services is showing a 43 percent battery usage. That seems unusually high, no?
I did some investigating with "gsam battery monitor" and it showed that "networklocationlocator" has been causing wakelocks.
