[APP] AdAway - Ad-Blocker Application - Sprint LG Optimus G

Based on the news that Google has removed ad-blocking apps from the Google Play Store, I figured I'd throw this up so people still can get this awesome application!
Download: AdAway v2.3
I did not make this or take ownership for it. This is the APK so just download it and install it like usual.

The app is also available on F-Droid, which will allow you to update it whenever the dev updates it.

Do you guys know if it blocks more than my hosts list (@200k)?

Ad Blocking the easy way

This is a hosts file with a massive list of ad servers included. It should block almost every ad possible.
Just unzip and put the extracted file in /system/etc/ using either root explorer or adb push.
update: Just doubled the size of the list, angry birds ads now blocked as well.

Unfortunalty, it doesn't seem to work on angry birds. If someone can find out what the ad server is, I can add it to the list.
This is great! I was just wondering what I could use to block ads.

adfree and root tools.
This is just a much larger list then they use in adfree I think, but yes it works in the same way.
Updated.
10char.
Glad the new host file worked!

LOL - I would have killed for this a few days ago when adfree first went out - took hours hunting down the temp fix in Modaco.
I have adfree installed again - will there be any conflicts with this if I don't uninstall (or freeze) it?
Great work bro, and thanks alot.
Thanks for the work I just got an update to my adfree app from the market, and it worked on my cm7 nightly.

Reminds me the good ol days of blocking things via hosts file in the *nix world its located in /etc/hosts/ or /etc/inet/hosts/ while in AOS /system/etc/hosts/. This is another reason I am atm downloading massive 8.1gb apk.lib archive lol can't stand so called "freeware" apps we all know its adware.
BTW where did you get this list? Anyways related to BISS(BT/BLP)? Whats the data format for it? Plain ASCII ([localhost] [ipv4/domain] [#/comment])? Reminds me of the good ol days when I use to compile IPFilter.dat for P2P world lol a simple google search of HyperNode IPFilter yields result as I had the up to date largest filter to date then.
Just want to say thank you again... lol. This is simple and work perfectly without installing any other third party apps like Ad Blocking etc... waisting resources

Yeah. Adfree will replace this file with their own. This is a more complete list then theirs. Thats the only difference.
Did you compile the list? If so what ranges did you use? Which tracker's verified it? I still have feeling this maybe affiliated with BISS.
its everything in adfree, and a big list i found online. No idea what BISS is.

Has anyone gotten pushed the new market?

Has anyone actually gotten pushed the new market on an Ics build. I an not talking about the playstore update, I am talking about the update after that added tabs. I know the APK is out there, but I don't feel comfortable downloading random apks from media fire that have access to my credit card.

I have not but my wife did on her stock phone.
Easiest way:
Just delete the data from your Market app in Settings, and the next time you open your Market app normally, it'll update itself, straight from Google's servers.

It updates to the play market but not the tabbed play market. I suspect it is because I am on ics.

TB just issued an update to support it but they also left a note:
What's in this version:
• Supports Google Play Store 3.5.15. Please note: Play Store is capricious with Market links because it relies more on Google's servers. If you want more control we encourage you to ask Google. It's their app. Let them know the goal you want to achieve. Once they provide a way, we'll give you full control of it!
• Improved app backup code: supports APK files with non-standard names.
• [PRO] Added "Disable Market app Auto Updater".
• Speed optimization & minor GUI tweaks.
• Updated translations.

Why the ad's

Good Morning..
Hey I have rooted and installed Darkside Rom .3 v4 with Venom. I have been noticing on my home screen a few ad icon's pop up every day....does anybody know how I can find out where theses ad's are coming from....
Thanks in advance.
You can try this app. Ad Network Detector and delete what may be causing the ads.
Its most likely an app you downloaded from market.
I noticed that mp3 download apps come with ads

That is from an app you downloaded. No rom has ads in it.

You could also try downloading rom toolbox and enable the ad blocking. It installs host files so would block ads in every app (just about. Angry birds it doesnt).

Adfree Android works in Angry Birds for me.
AdAway hands down is the best (and only) ad removal app I've got. I've tried lots, and none compare. It allows you to white-list sites if you wish to keep them and removes all the rest. As far as I know, you need to be rooted, but I will stand by this app 100%.

AdFree - now removed from Play Store

We all know that some days ago all "Ad Blocking" apps were removed from Play Store so I have backed up the best ad blocking app for me

This sucks, but the good thing is that there are alternative app repos... For example, I am ising a different ad blocker (AdAway), and it moved to F-Droid, as noted on the dev page: https://code.google.com/p/ad-away/. So, hopefully, all such apps will still be available elsewhere.
Thanks man, great app.

Great information, I used blackmart but havent tried F-Droid. Good information :good:
thannks man :good:
There are many good alternatives to Google playstore... Anyway, you do not really need an adfree app.. If you are on DorimanX kernel you can use stweaks to automatically download and update the hosts file that will block 90% of ads... Adfree apps are useles.. just update the hosts file manually... Also, you can mod any app to remove it's built in ads.. I do it all the time.. edit smali files to block hosts and set banner sized to zero... Just name any free app you want to be adfree and I can provide you a modded apk that is adfree (over PM so i won't violate XDA rules)
Why to take time to modify every app that I want to have in my phone if I can use a single program to do that.
Also not everybody has the same kernel and that is why this app is very usefull
Thanks for this !
Thanks a ton

It doesn't look like app is supported or updated anymore. Time to switch to this: http://adblockplus.org/en/android

Ad Blocker

Here is a good ad blocker for ROOTED phones that works on most GS4 roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1803573&d=1363234532
Hit the Thanks button if this is of help to you.
GS4 running Liquid Smooth at the moment
For reference, this was the adblocker that was on the ROM Toolbox.
Google has already removed 99% of ad blockers on the Google Play Store and we got lucky they didn’t notice ROM Toolbox. We have since then removed Ad blocker from the main screen on ROM Toolbox.

their official reason was that if affected other app developers revenue from their ad supported apps, which is true. But the bigger more then likely real reason is because it messed with googles ad revenue. either way its not that hard to install a ad blocker anyway. just install a third party market (i use f-droid) and install adaway.
the reason jrummy removed the adblocking feature of rom toolbox is because if he didnt, the whole app would of been removed from the playstore. In turn, the posted app in the op is useless, its no longer maintained which means it wont block ads anymore (or will just block old ads, which is pretty much pointless)
you can download the ad block zip from goldeneye roms and pull out the hosts file and put it in system > etc
