Audio problem with the MHL adapter

I can not believe what's happening with my new cable MHL! I have a TV with DVI input, but I've never had any problem because with a simple HDMI-DVI adapter I could always play HD video on my TV and, from the headphone, I have the audio connected to a "AUX input" of a stereo. It always worked with my laptop and my hard drive media!!
The problem is that the galaxy s2 headset turns off the sound when you plug the MHL cable. I can not hear anything on my TV!
I do not know what to do, I think has no solution. I even connected the mobile audio to my notebook's bluetooth, but when I connect the mhl cable no sound is heard again!!
Does anyone have any solution? Is there any menu to force the sound through headphones?

I think I have a solution. I Expose it to help someone having the same problem:
1 .- Buy a HDMI male to 5 RCA RGB audio video av component cable
2.- Buy a DVI-I 24+5 Male to 3 RCA RGB Female Converter Adapter
Now you have the video and audio separately using an HDMI cable
3.- Connect the RGB cable to the DVI and audio cables to your stereo
*I can not put pictures of the cables because I am a new user and the system will not let me, sorry.

Sorry, HDMI doesn't carry analog audio signals. So you are out of luck with this RCA solution.
You need to a) change your TV model, or b) use a cheap AV receiver in between the GS2 and the TV set.

Think it's impossible to work? What bad news!! I don't understand why someone sells a cable that doesn't work!
What a fool I was to believe the technical characteristics of amazon:
Gold plated HDMI to 5 RCA component video audio AV cable.
Provides high resolution up to 1080p.
High definition sound and clear image transfers.

Anyway I don't understand why we talk about converting the image and sound in analog. There are manuals about how to open an HDMI cable and also has the red, green and blue wires inside. Just for separate cables lost the concept of "digital? Not understand...
My TV has DVI input, which is also digital. As I said before, I have an HDMI female to DVI male that works perfectly on my TV when connect my laptop and my multimedia hard drive. If I could break the adapter, it would have too a derivation of wires a pin to another, right? And it works in high definition
All I wanted to do with this cable was to extract the sound from an HDMI cable because the Galaxy S2 lost the sound of the headphone and I can not connect to the AUX input of my amp.

The HDMI digital audio signal is transmitted as a single aggregated digital stream that contains a variable number of digital channels (from 2 to 7.1 and even more).
Also in the pre-HDMI days the DVD's SD multichannel digital audio stream was transferred using a single coaxial cable (electrical) or a single optical cable, hence no separated cables for every channel.
Therefore digital channels have to be previously decoded and separated, and then converted by DACs to discrete analog signals.
No hope then to directly get from HDMI a couple of stereo analog signals to feed your stereo amplifier, you should have read all the negative user reviews of that cable on Amazon UK.
My suggestion: buy a cheap (or used) AV receiver with HDMI inputs/outputs and then connect its analog stereo monitor output to the TV auxiliary audio input (red/white RCAs or 3.5mm connector), or just use a couple of speakers connected to the AV receiver.

I was really hoping to use this phone with any normal DVI monitor and use headphones connected to the phones headphone jack. I guess this destroys that idea.
Why is it that everytime something like MHL comes along they implement it with absolutely no foresight as to how it might be used?

I think that MHL is just similar to HDMI in that respect.
So you wouldn't get analog audio output from the GS2 even if it had an HDMI instead of an MHL.
Today the manufacturers of latest cell phones expect connections only with TV sets equipped with complete digital ports (generally HDMI), not considering their products to be used with computer monitors.
BTW, DVI video-only port today is considered not suitable for full-HD audio-video material, and probably couldn't even fully support 1080p/24fps video signals.

DVI monitors support 60hz 1080p okay. Whether or not they cans support 1080p/30 or 1080p/24 purely depends on the monitor's firmware. Most monitors woudn't support 24hz but some probably support 30hz, which I think the GSII uses.
Also I didn't know HDMI out on phones did the same thing. Thanks for telling me that.

I guess it's the matter of audio routing!
Maybe someday someone could mod the kernel to handle these types of situations ;-)

Thank you Coincoin0017. But the problem resolved itself when I installed android 4.0.4. Now the headphone output works when I plug the MHL adapter

now days they only cater for the mainstream market.
the assumption was probably everyone will only use it on a hdtv that has its own speakers.
I agree its a sad state of affairs but thats how it is I guess, I am currently trying to get sound as I am using a hdmi monitor which has no speakers.

Excellent. ... (hopefully still works on 4.3) I have the same problem with my PWD8 which is a panel so doesn't have speakers.
Is it possible to take a cable from the phones (Note 2) 3.5mm jack and put it into an AV receiver so that it uses the speakers attached to it?
Or even bluetooth sound to a separate speaker from the phone?

[Q] Audio line-out for Galaxy Nexus

Hello all ,
Is there a way to get an audio line-out from the Galaxy Nexus, either using an adapter or a docking station? I'm not looking for a solution like the one offered by the Samsung Galaxy S2's car dock (which streams bluetooth audio from the phone to the dock, then the dock turns the bluetooth streaming to analog audio through a 3.5mm port) but rather something like an adapter for the MHL port or from the docking station.
Appreciate all the help!

The obvious solution (at least to me) is to plug into the headphone jack. You could also use either the media dock or MHL adapter in conjunction with an HDMI-to-analog adapter such as the one linked below:

He's asking for a line out solution because it will bypass the internal headphone amp that is utilized when the 3.5mm port is used. If you're plugging the phone into speakers or a sound system that way you'll get much better sound.

If the mhl -> HDMI cable adapter carries both audio and video, you could use an hdmi breakout adapter to split the digital audio. It depends on the HDMI output capabilities of the phone and the acceptability of digital audio for your needs.
Edit: would no doubt be a cumbersome solution. It all comes down to your usage scenario for the output.

What OJ in Compton said, I'm looking to bypass the internal headphone amp, not sure if there are any details on the car dock or desk dock, I hope 3rd party manufacturers come up with something, any solutions are welcome.

Never thought about this, but a contactless dock with HDMI out directly to the AMP = audio bliss. Thanks to the forum for letting me see the obvious

Bumping this thread...has anyone successfully done this? I want line out audio for my car's 3.5mm AUX input - had it with my ipod and it sounded much better than through the headphone jack, as well the convenience of not having to maintain two volumes.
Hoping the official car dock that uses the 3 pin connector and has a 3.5 out would do this, but I'm worried it will just use BT to transmit the audio to the dock like I read the Nexus One dock did.

I wish too that the NG had line level out.
I think it's a limitation of the hardware. I think Apple is the online one that really uses line level out via it's dock connector.
I hope someday Google will use some sort of line level out on their reference hardware or built support directly into a newer OS.
I remember my old Dell DJ had line level out. Soooooo much better.

There is nothing wrong with the 3.5mm output sound quality wise.
Trying to drive headphone-like impedance (lower) with a line out isn't the best idea, but driving higher impedance inputs like your car deck isn't that bad as long as you let the amps do the "work" of boosting the volume and not your phone. While not optimal, the decrease in sound quality shouldn't be very noticeable.
The main advantage of the digital audio though USB (what apple does) IMO is that it eliminates the need to have both the USB plugged in to charge and the 3.5 mm cord for audio. It also allows song data to be shared and device control from the speaker/head unit. Good setups will recognize most android devices as mass USB storage and provide the same functionality, but I'm not sure how the MTS on the GN will affect this.

I would wait and see how the audio quality is from the dock. Even if it is bluetooth, the audio quality may not be that bad.

The problem is, that if the head unit supports MTP then yes it can read the device like mass-storage, thats fine, but it doesn't allow you to stream media from radio apps, youtube and turn-by-turn directions from gps, this is what we are looking for...
technically it's not sending analog audio output through the USB, its just reading the stored media on the phone.
I have read that samsung phones are able to accomplish sending analog audio through the USB while charging, with the correct resistance values (adapter) or possibly with software pointing the audio in that direction (for example code build into the framework/API)
this is one major thing that Android lacks over iPhone, this problem should be addressed ASAP. I'm hoping CM9 might be able to find a solution for this.

I agree, i hope they fix this soon toi. It would make the development of accessories much easier for all android phones. Seems like a no brainer but I guess Google has other priorities...

Just starred this, if the hardware is able to do that I find it completely stupid that they do not allow it.
Smartphones audio amps are not exactly famous for being top-quality so having this possibility would be great.

Well, if you were waiting for the card dock to solve your problems... it doesn't. Plugging into the dock's "line out" gets you amp driven sound. I really do not understand why this is such an issue for Android. When I plug somoething into my 3 year old Nokia smartphone a window pops up for me to choose headphones, headset or line out. Why can't ICS offer the option and if in the car dock, default to line out? A USB solution is not going to help if you are using the car dock.

Which if I understand correctly uses Bluetooth to transmit compressed audio from the phone to the dock, then delivers it through the 3.5mm jack. Why not just have a digital signal go through the USB port!?

actually the pogo pin transfers the digitial audio and the dock decodes it into analog to the 3.5mm output

Output to RCA cables.. Is it possible?

I want to output my video to my dvd screen in my car. My input for the aux of the dvd player are RCA. Previously I was using a 3.5mm jack to output to RCA and this worked with my old phone (t mobile vibrant). Is there anyway to output the HDMI on this phone to rca inputs? Any help is appreciated. I posted in this thread because I'm assuming the fix would be an accessory. Thanks.

I doubt you'll find a cable to do it. hdmi is digital and the composite signal needed by the vehicle is analog. You'll need something like this:

I finally came up with a solution that works for me. My goal was to output the video of my phone to my dvd screen in my car. The dvd player has RCA inputs. Well rather than buying an hdmi adapter and trying to find a dc power source compatible with my car, I found an alternative solution. My old phone is a t-mobile vibrant which outputs video through a 3.5mm adapter which splits into RCA inputs. It worked fine for playing video on the screen but was outdated and I had to upgrade. The GS3 only outputs hdmi and Bluetooth is not an option for video so I had a great idea. Why not use my GS3 to wifi tether to my old Vibrant and stream audio / video through the wireless connection. So I rooted the phone, downloaded wifi tether from the play store (free) and set up my vibrant to connect to my GS3 through tether. In order to share files, I downloaded bubbleupnp (free with limitations) from the play store and now I can play files from my GS3, which wirelessly plays on my vibrant, which outputs to my RCA inputs. Its kind of a roundabout way of doing what I wanted but it works well. I can keep my vibrant in my car hooked up to a car charger, while my GS3 can be docked and charging as well. The only thing I have to do is remember to turn on my wifi tether when I get in my car and my vibrant connects automatically. And the best part is that if I play video or music from my GS3 library, I'm not downloading anything so no data usage from the wifi tether. Pretty awesome. I imagine this will work with any two DLNA devices so long as one of them has video out through rca or and older adapter. Hope this helps someone out.

And do you have two cellphones batteries to drain... have you connected 2 car chargers or anything like that? Your car panel will be with too many cables, no?

Well I do have two car chargers, One in front and one in the back. I do need to get a good mount that has power attached. I've seen the ones that plug into the lighter and they have the power built right in so that will eliminate one cable and give me a nice dock for my GS3. Not sure what I'll do with the vibrant but I won't need to access it very much so might mount it to the inside of my armrest or something. I don't think the cables will really be a problem though. I'm just happy I got it working again.

Vehicle integration Tips & Tricks

The S3 is the first phone that I had serious plans to integrate into my car to use for more convenient navigation, stereo audio (via A2DP), etc. I've connected it with some success but it doesn't quite work as well as I had hoped. I didn't see another thread on the topic so I thought I'd start a thread where everyone could share their tips/tricks/best practices. Here is my setup and issues:
I have a 2009 Murano LE that has bluetooth but the BT system does not support A2DP. The purchase of the Galaxy S3 coincided with the expiration of my warranty so I installed the Neo Audio GV1 setup to add A2DP (and other features). I use the Infuse 4G car mount.
The car mount works well but one complaint I have is that there's no easy way to get back into "car mode" (the S Voice thing) if I leave the S Voice app for any reason. My current solution is to quickly pop the sliding charger but of the mount out and back in.
What apps/configurations do others out there use?

I went with a Pioneer AppRadio2. It's what I view as the current leader for an integrated solution.
It uses Bluetooth for phone calls and touch screen control. The display uses HDMI to connect to the phone.
It has downsides. Number one is that it's buggy as ****. It also only allows you to control approved apps directly through the radio.
There are some really high quality apps though.
I have an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter for my OBD2 connector on the car. On my phone I run DashCommand which the AppRadio controls directly. I have real time fuel economy as well as many other readings available to me directly on the AppRadio as well as the ability to run diagnostics and pull and clear trouble codes. All of this can be done through the radio/phone combo.

omg, i've been looking for someone who has this phone with appradio 2. i absolutely hate the appradio 2. The bluetooth OBD2 seems interesting with dash command. There seems to be 2 kinds on ebay, the 1.5v and 2v?
I'm trying the infuse 4G car dock but the audio doesn't come out of the micro usb port for audio. it will only connect if I use the MHL connector directly. i'm also worried if I use CM10 it wont' be compatible with the appradio 2 anymore?

The reason the Infuse dock won't work for you is that Samsung changed the pinout on the S3 for MHL. It's now an 11-pin connector instead of 5.
For the OBD2 I got the v1.4b Elm adapter as Elm says that there is no newer version that they've created. It works really well.
I haven't tried CM10 because I'm certain that it doesn't support MHL. CM9 didn't support it on my Skyrocket either. It's a shame really, because CM9 fixed all of the Bluetooth bugs that the Touchwiz version of ICS seems to have.

I have the Infuse dock and audio works perfect... there is an option in dock settings to route the audio through the USB...

Interesting - I need to find this. I thought this wouldn't work until Jelly Bean. Does your car have steering wheel volume/track control and does this work in conjunction with the USB connection?

Make sure it is checked for audio through the Infuse dock.

I had the same experience when I tested last night, but I wasn't sure if the issue was with the Neo system where the USB is connected or not. I'm guessing based on your feedback that the dock is the issue.

sublimejosh - just to be clear, when you mentioned the Infuse dock's USB audio out functionality you didn't specifically mention that you were using this. Are you? If so, what system/device do you have the other end of the USB cable connected to?

Are you able to put the Note 8.0 into landscape when using the Smart Dock? Also, is the device stable enough to be written upon with S-pen while docked?
BTW, is there any other way to get USB- OTG and HDMI functionality simultaneously? (sans the Smart Dock)

I have the Smart Dock for my Note II and it works well. I haven't received my Int'l 3G Note 8.0 yet to test it, but it's good to hear that others have it working.
Since the Smart Dock holds both devices in Portrait orientation, it will not automatically put the display in Landscape mode unless you are playing a video. You would have to use a 3rd party app such as "Orientation Control".
I doubt you could write on the Note 8.0's screen successfully while in the dock. The dock is roughly 3" square and is not heavy enough to stabilize the tab for anything but very light screen taps or swipes. The device is not secured in the dock other than the by microUSB connector. The device just rests in the dock under its own weight, vertically.
The Smart Dock is not made to hold the device physically in a Landscape orientation. I'm not sure if a microUSB-to-microUSB extension cable would work to retain the functions and allow a separate landscape "holder" or case/cover to be used without the actual Smart Dock attached? Hmmm...
Oh, AFAIK, and I've researched fairly thoroughly, I couldn't find any other way to achieve HDMI, Audio, and USB OTG simultaneously. You might be able to use the Allcast Media Hub for wireless HDMI & Audio, and then connect a USB OTG adapter to the Note 8.0's microUSB/MHL port, but I haven't tested that.

I have the Smart Dock for my Note II and it works well. I haven't received my Int'l 3G Note 8.0 yet to test it, but it's good to hear that others have it working.
Since the Smart Dock holds both devices in Portrait orientation, it will not automatically put the display in Landscape mode unless you are playing a video. You would have to use a 3rd party app such as "Orientation Control".
I doubt you could write on the Note 8.0's screen successfully while in the dock. The dock is roughly 3" square and is not heavy enough to stabilize the tab for anything but very light screen taps or swipes. The device is not secured in the dock other than the by microUSB connector. The device just rests in the dock under its own weight, vertically.
The Smart Dock is not made to hold the device physically in a Landscape orientation. I'm not sure if a microUSB-to-microUSB extension cable would work to retain the functions and allow a separate landscape "holder" or case/cover to be used without the actual Smart Dock attached? Hmmm...
Oh, AFAIK, and I've researched fairly thoroughly, I couldn't find any other way to achieve HDMI, Audio, and USB OTG simultaneously. You might be able to use the Allcast Media Hub for wireless HDMI & Audio, and then connect a USB OTG adapter to the Note 8.0's microUSB/MHL port, but I haven't tested that.

Thanks, it was very helpful. I was thinking of getting the Smart Dock in lieu of the HDMI adapter. USB-OTG + HDMI at same time isn't much of a necessity for me. HDMI is still primary for me. Audio, when required could be used from the 3.5 mm jack.
Guess, it would be better to go for the HDMI adapter.
BTW, do you have any experience on HDMI to VGA converters?Do they work well? Actually I need to hook up the Note 8.0 to a VGA projector?

VGA doesn't carry Audio signals, so you would most likely need a unit that would extract the audio from the HDMI as well as the Video signal, and then route the Audio to a separate connector/cable. I have seen some VGA cables that also have a 3.5mm Stereo audio plug at each end, so you can hook up the audio output from your PC's sound card and plug it into the 3.5mm audio Jack on most video projectors. Yes, I have seen some which can extract audio from the HDMI feed.
There are a number of listings on eBay in my country. I would love to get it from a reliable website, but most of them are overseas and the customs department in India makes it a lot of hassle.
I ordered a display adapter from dx.com once. No problems with website or the product, but it was held up for a month at the customs office and finally I had to pay a 50% duty as well.

I picked up a smart dock today and I am playing with it right now.
Some issues, having to repower up the dock for usb to work after tablet is inserted.
And I am not having any sound come out of the 3.5 jack on the back of the dock.
Also it I am using a HDMI to DVI adaptor for my moniter and I am using an orentation control app with it.
Wish it worked with my Galaxy s3.

Is your Note 8.0 battery level above 80% when you put it in the dock? If not, the tablet will draw too much power from the power adapter just to CHARGE the tablet, and the USB ports do not have sufficient power. If your tablet or phone battery is over 80%, this isn't a problem and you shouldn't have to "re-Dock" it to get the USB ports to work. Samsung should have made the power adapter more powerful (3 or 4 amps).
To get audio output from the 3.5mm rear Jack, you need to go into SETTINGS > ACCESSORY > AUDIO OUTPUT MODE, and Check the box for "Use External Speakers when device is Docked".

Just to be clear, are you able to Use the S-Pen when docked, any way to keep the tablet physically in a landscape position?

I thought I had answered your Portrait/Landscape question in paragraphs 3 & 4 of Post #4? Read through it again. The smart dock does not hold the tablet in a Landscape (horizontal) orientation at all. You could possibly use a case or cover on the Note 8.0 that would hold it in landscape, or use Samsung's Note 8.0 Car Mount and then connect the tablet to the Smart Dock with a 11-pin Male-to-Female micro-USB extension cable.

Yes, I had already read your post.
But the other member claimed to have already used it with the Note8, whereas you told me that you were still expecting your note 8, so I was keen to know more about the actual experience of a user.
BTW, Do you know if 11 pin USB extension cables are available?

Take a look at a picture of the smart dock, or look at nztechfreak's YouTube review of it. Just from its physical size and design there is no way that the Smart Dock can support or hold a tablet in a Landscape or horizontal position when on a desk/flat surface...or any surface.
For reference, I just tried my Note II in the Smart Dock with the phone and dock laying on its side. The dock will hold the Note II in landscape position, but the phone is at a perfect 90° angle to the table's surface, which makes it hard to use the touchscreen, and it will easily become undocked, as there is no pressure or weight to secure the device. And there is nothing directly behind the phone to keep it from moving or sliding back when you press the screen. Also, at least one USB port will be inaccessible because it or they will be against the table's surface when the dock is laying on its side. This dock was simply made to only hold a PHONE (either the Note II, SGS3, or SGS4) in a vertical Portrait position. It's obvious from the design that it was not made for landscape use whatsoever. It just happens to hold the Note II on its side because the dock is the same width as the phone.
I don't believe that Samsung will ever make a LANDSCAPE Desk dock for the Note 8.0. It is clear from its general design that Samsung intended this tablet to be used as a "Notepad" in a Portrait (vertical) orientation. The only odd exception is the position of the IR Blaster on the side (the SGS4 IR Blaster is on the top). I would definitely like a landscape desk dock as well, but I'm not convinced that it would be practical for this particular tablet. However, there is a car/windshield mount listed on Samsung's web site that looks like it will hold the tablet in landscape mode.
I'm searching for the extension cables now and will post here if & when I find them.

I never tried the S-Pen while in the dock. Also I tried the settings mentioned above to get the 3.5 sound to work, but no luck.
I took it back, I'll wait for a proper one to come out, or try with the wifi all share hub and build somthing that way.

If I hook up USB+charger and THEN the HDMI, it works. For some reason (lack of power???) it won't accept a flash drive if I plug a hub in and the flash drive into that. (I use a Bluetooth keyboard and a USB mouse.)
Haven't bit the bullet on the official smart dock yet though :'(.
