Didn't see this anywhere. And when I tried to find out how it was too much to do to get just one thing working so I figured a little trick out that I have done with many at&t phones and it works!
First you need root.
Next download your favorite file viewer or just use system tuner.
Search for tether entitlement check or something like that in system apps and freeze it
Reboot.
That's it
Ha if your device messes up or something its not my fault yada yada yada you take full responaibiltity etc
One last thing , I got a little scared because my phone rebooted I think twice after the initial reboot so don't be alarmed if this happens. Phone will still boot up.
Enjoy!
Only tested on Xperia ion for at&t with latest ics
I just flashed lt28i version..and tether is working fine..
All bloatware of att is also removed...bcz ii could not find how to enable tether at that time...but it is nice if any 1 wanna use with att rom.
Sent from my LT28i using xda app-developers app
Good job, people were trying to figure this out when the Ion first came out.
Sent from my LT28at using xda app-developers app
Ya it was pretty simple haha and yes that version has tethering working already but for the at&t build it is locked and this is how to unlock it
Great Job!!
I'm not at&t ROM fan, but it might be the only cure for someone who got scratchy voice while using either "h" or "i" ROMs
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2115074)
With this is possible to keep the at&t ROM with tethering working!
Thanks for sharing

Try updating profile/prl in system updates and reboot. If that doesn't fix it contact sprint and have them attempt to push it through reactivation.
But no, simply rooting the device will not solve the problem you're explaining. If the above steps don't work, just swap it out?? Clearly its not a widespread issue and likely has something to do with its activation.

Assuming you or he already updated the profile and PRL correctly and talked with Sprint (while on the phone to assure it is registered correctly!) I'd recommend using sfhub's stock root [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101] This provides a clean start with el29 modem, kernal and stock ROM, and provides root access. Since he's having problems I'd do a FULL restore (reset user data). I'd then use Auto Root with CWM - option C [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728]. That will give you a stock rooted phone with CWM for recovery and additions. Make sure all works. That may be enough. It could be just horrible reception at his place. Might want to check out an Airave device. There are also posts on how to tweak 3g/4g speeds [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990] Then if all is working maybe think about another ROM. I'm loving Blazer. Calkulin's and Strong Steve's are also super. Good luck.

Hey guys,
I just received my upgrade to ICS via my provider (Bell Canada) and there was more bloatware than I could ever want. Therefore, I read the forums and did all the right steps to successfully root the device... thus, removing all the bloatware (!!!!!).
But, when pairing my bluetooth headset device everything is fine until I go to dial from the device. All it does is give me a force close and my dialer apk dies. As I commute in lovely traffic daily, I do need the use of my headset.
If anyone has a solution that would be great. I'm thinking I'll have to unroot tonight. And since this is my daily-use device, I'm not interested in CMW and putting CM9 on. I have a LG Optimus 3d as well and have wasted way too much time on custom ROMs and CM7 lol.
Thanks for the help

A new version of ICS is available on samfirmware.com
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=8&view=6468
Enjoy
Is it rooted ?
Been out since about last Thursday, actually.
Hi, has anyone tested this on a Rogers phone? Someone confirmed that the 'LH2 version works with rogers (in another thread) but I just wanted to double check if this is the same ROM. Also do I need to do anything else to get it working on the Rogers network besides add the APN settings (modem files, etc)?
I'm doing this update for my dad's phone primarily to fix the data usage bug in the official GB rom and it would be nice to get him updated to ICS.

It will work on a Rogers device, but do keep in mind that the official LH2 build has many of the same problems as the leak, as well as one or two extras since it apparently doesn't do a full wipe first. Two major ones present in both ICS builds are a broken keyboard backlight and broken tethering, though there are fairly easy fixes here on the forums for both. The official build has problems with the phone app crashing if you have contacts on the phone other than google contacts, I believe.
Your best bet is to back up anything he has on the phone, convert all the contacts over to google contacts if he uses anything else, and do a factory wipe before updating. If he cares about tethering or the keyboard lights, you'll need to flash clockwork mod recovery after the update, and flash those two updates as well.

Awesome! Thanks for all the info. Yeah, I was reading about those issues and I was shocked that AT&T and/or Samsung would allow such major bugs through (especially the keyboard light bug). I wonder if people are complaining about these issues on the official AT&T forums. I'm just glad the XDA community is here to help
Is it safe to assume that AT&T didn't mess with the built-in ICS data usage tool?
Is a flashable zip coming out soon ?

Since no-one's outright said it: this update DOES NOT wipe /data. You will keep your apps and settings.
At least, if you're coming from UCLG9. Don't know about GB builds. Honestly, I don't think Odin is smart enough for something like that, but I'm no expert.

any word of a flashable, rooted version coming? or is dmans the only option?
Im just using the stock gs3 from tmo.
If you all would be so kind as to give me a few pros/cons to root for this phone.
Im am not concerned about voiding warranty.
Im wondering if there are any immediate perks to being rooted:
like bypassing tmo's restriction on wifi hotspot; to my knowledge, tmo now only lets their customers use wifi hotspot with the 5gb plan and not the 2gb plan.
Sent from SCH-T999
I'm short on time right now but if you root your phone you can download an app called wifi tether, which requires root permission, then you use your phone data on your laptop all you want.
With a rooted phone you can also download new roms that people develope and try out a lot of new functions before the official update.
You are more exposed to security risks once you root your phone I believe, but just don't install apps from random sites
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I really see no cons to rooting except warranty which isn't really true. If you study the warranty and know your stuff you can verbally defend your right to root and not lose warranty.
Pros: everything.
I do not see the point of having a non rooted android phone with some sort of recovery.. Custom ROMs, themes and titanium backup for all your apps
here ya go http://bit.ly/UUaCxg
Don't do it and please leave.
All you need to do is read over all the great threads around here to form a decision.
To root.

Ive rooted before and I have explored almost all the developers' work on other phones.
Just to clarify im asking about this phone specifically. The first guy already answered my biggest concern about the wifi hotspot.
If you guys can think of any other immediate perks like: unwarranted tmo restrictions that are resolved via rooting this phone.
I will never go back to bone stock gs3 because I would miss out on _________.
Im already aware of the capability to "pirate" most paid apps.
Also there's the possibility of finding a more buttery smooth rom than the stock rom of course.
Extra battery life via underclocking with an aftermarket kernel is obviously another big one, but things im looking for are things on the same level as how rooting allows me to bypass the wifi hotspot limitations that tmo put on the 2gb plan
Sent from SCH-T999
I'd say that if you just want a phone to work and don't get about any extra stuff, don't bother rooting it. If you're interested in modifying your phone and basically being capable of doing A LOT more than you can with stock, root it.
Just make sure you do a lot of research before you do anything. I read hundreds of pages on this forum before I did anything just in case.
Adfree app, which requires root, changes everything for the better.
I mainly use my root for ad block, titanium backup, and maybe delete gsiff_daemon (didn't delete it yet because it hasn't tried to kill my battery yet). Something else that could be useful maybe GMD gesture control
There are a lot of nice apps that require root. Even if you don't have any apps in mind now, at some point you'll probably come across one you want and you'll kick yourself for not having gotten around to rooting yet. Besides tripping the flash counter and warranties the only con is the possibility of failing miserably and bricking your phone, but as long as you follow instructions you'll be fine.
ability to flash different radios for better/worse signal.
ability to flash different roms for better/worse battery life.
I have rooted every Android I have had in the Nexus One/Mytouch4G/HTC Amaze....and have had my s3 for a good 4 months now and have yet to root it.

Im considering rooting it though to bypass tmo's restriction on wifi hotspot, and to be able to use google voice as my voicemail.
When I finally do root ill be looking forward to checking out the endless development for this popular device

I have a question or two. I'm coming from the HTC Evo 4g and 3D. My 3D is set up with the pacmann 4.2.2 Jelly Bean rom and I love it, but no hot spot using sprint's hot spot or wifi tether. This doesn't work for me as I use the hot spot a lot so I use other roms when I need the hot spot, no big deal. I've been researching and rooting doesn't seem too bad on the LGOG and the roms sound pretty good. My concern is a working hot spot. I have to have it and I don't want to loose it when my Evo 3d is all set up for it when I need it. I've read a little bit on foxfi and wifi tether. One with and one without root? Foxfi doesn't work at all on my Evo pacmann rom. I just need confirmation that I'll be able to get one of these to work on the LG and that it has been done successfully. If not I'll hold off a little longer on the switch till the talented developers solve the issue. I can get my LGOG free basically so I'd love to jump on the deal since it looks like a really cool phone. I like the note2 as well but this would save me hundreds. While I'm at it, are the roms overclocking the LG at all or adding other goodies or are they mostly stock rooted roms minus bloat at this point? Oh and if I do get it should I update it or leave it alone if I want to root the phone. I'd hate for Best Buy to update it and block it.
Thanks, from a future LGOG guy......maybe.
Wifi tether works perfectly fine on the lgog after changing a setting. As far as none rooted tether I'm not sure what works. Updated or not you can root both old and new software now. I would recommend updating the software before root so that way you already have the jb modem.

I actually have the S3 and Nexus 7 so I am not familiar with LG stuff. But on the S3 if you have stock recovery and are just rooted you can update still. You lose root but you can just reroot. We have a lot of developer support for the S3 so we can just use Odin and flash stock whenever or a one click stock rooted etc. I notice it is very scarce over here with developer support. I was contemplating getting this device if I could do a swap with my S3 so I was just checking out the scene.
